11 Woe(A) to those who rise early in the morning
    to run after their drinks,
who stay up late at night
till they are inflamed with wine.(B)
12 They have harps and lyres at their banquets,
    pipes(C) and timbrels(D) and wine,
but they have no regard(E) for the deeds of the Lord,
no respect for the work of his hands.(F)
13 Therefore my people will go into exile(G)
    for lack of understanding;(H)
those of high rank(I) will die of hunger
and the common people will be parched with thirst.(J)
14 Therefore Death(K) expands its jaws,
    opening wide its mouth;(L)
into it will descend their nobles and masses
with all their brawlers and revelers.(M)
15 So people will be brought low(N)
    and everyone humbled,(O)
the eyes of the arrogant(P) humbled.
16 But the Lord Almighty will be exalted(Q) by his justice,(R)
and the holy God will be proved holy(S) by his righteous acts.

24 Therefore, as tongues of fire(A) lick up straw(B)
and as dry grass sinks down in the flames,
so their roots will decay(C)
and their flowers blow away like dust;(D)
for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty
and spurned the word(E) of the Holy One(F) of Israel.

13 The Lord says:

“These people(A) come near to me with their mouth
and honor me with their lips,(B)
but their hearts are far from me.(C)
Their worship of me
is based on merely human rules they have been taught.[a](D)
14 Therefore once more I will astound these people
    with wonder upon wonder;(E)
the wisdom of the wise(F) will perish,
the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish.(G)
15 Woe to those who go to great depths
to hide(H) their plans from the Lord,
who do their work in darkness and think,
“Who sees us?(I) Who will know?”(J)
16 You turn things upside down,
as if the potter were thought to be like the clay!(K)
Shall what is formed say to the one who formed(L) it,
    “You did not make me”?
Can the pot say to the potter,(M)
    “You know nothing”?(N)

your sins have hidden his face from you,

He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:

“‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.’[a](A)

You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”(B)

And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe[b] your own traditions!(C) 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’[c](D) and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[d](E) 11 But you say(F) that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)— 12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. 13 Thus you nullify the word of God(G) by your tradition(H) that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”
