¹⁶ and said, “I swear by myself,^(A) declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,^{(B) 17} I will surely bless you^(C) and make your descendants^(D) as numerous as the stars in the sky^(E) and as the sand on the seashore.^(F) Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,^{(G) 18} and through your offspring^[a] all nations on earth will be blessed,^[b](H) because you have obeyed me.”^(I)

² Isaac said, “I am now an old man and don’t know the day of my death.^{(A) 3} Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country^(B) to hunt some wild game for me.

¹³ There above it^[a] stood the Lord,^(A) and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac.^(B) I will give you and your descendants the land^(C) on which you are lying.^{(D) 14} Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you^(E) will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south.^(F) All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.^[b](G)

⁹ After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram,^[a](A) God appeared to him again and blessed him.^{(B) 10} God said to him, “Your name is Jacob,^[b] but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel.^[c]”^(C) So he named him Israel.

¹¹ And God said to him, “I am God Almighty^[d];^(D) be fruitful and increase in number.^(E) A nation^(F) and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will be among your descendants.^{(G) 12} The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you.^(H)”^{(I) 13} Then God went up from him^(J) at the place where he had talked with him.

¹⁴ Jacob set up a stone pillar^(K) at the place where God had talked with him, and he poured out a drink offering^(L) on it; he also poured oil on it.^{(M) 15} Jacob called the place where God had talked with him Bethel.^[e](N)

⁷ The hands of the witnesses must be the first in putting that person to death,^(A) and then the hands of all the people.^(B) You must purge the evil^(C) from among you.

Law Courts

⁸ If cases come before your courts that are too difficult for you to judge^(D)—whether bloodshed, lawsuits or assaults^(E)—take them to the place the Lord your God will choose.^(F)

⁴⁴ Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies,^(A) I will not reject them or abhor^(B) them so as to destroy them completely,^(C) breaking my covenant^(D) with them. I am the Lord their God. ⁴⁵ But for their sake I will remember^(E) the covenant with their ancestors whom I brought out of Egypt^(F) in the sight of the nations to be their God. I am the Lord.’”
