Saul Takes His Life^(A)

10 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa. ²The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua. ³The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him.

⁴Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and abuse me.”

But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it. ⁵When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died. ⁶So Saul and his three sons died, and all his house died together.

⁷When all the Israelites in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them.

⁸The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. ⁹They stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news among their idols and their people. ¹⁰They put his armor in the temple of their gods and hung up his head in the temple of Dagon.^(B)

¹¹When all the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead^(C) heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, ¹²all their valiant men went and took the bodies of Saul and his sons and brought them to Jabesh. Then they buried their bones under the great tree in Jabesh, and they fasted seven days.

¹³Saul died^(D) because he was unfaithful^(E) to the Lord; he did not keep^(F) the word of the Lord and even consulted a medium^(G) for guidance, ¹⁴and did not inquire of the Lord. So the Lord put him to death and turned^(H) the kingdom^(I) over to David son of Jesse.

A Message About Moab^(A)

48 Concerning Moab:^(B)

This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:

“Woe to Nebo,^(C) for it will be ruined.
    Kiriathaim^(D) will be disgraced and captured;
    the stronghold^[a] will be disgraced and shattered.
²Moab will be praised^(E) no more;
    in Heshbon^[b]^(F) people will plot her downfall:
    ‘Come, let us put an end to that nation.’^(G)
You, the people of Madmen,^[c] will also be silenced;
    the sword will pursue you.
³Cries of anguish arise from Horonaim,^(H)
    cries of great havoc and destruction.
⁴Moab will be broken;
    her little ones will cry out.^[d]
⁵They go up the hill to Luhith,^(I)
    weeping bitterly as they go;
on the road down to Horonaim^(J)
    anguished cries over the destruction are heard.
⁶Flee!^(K) Run for your lives;
    become like a bush^[e] in the desert.^(L)
⁷Since you trust in your deeds and riches,^(M)
    you too will be taken captive,
and Chemosh^(N) will go into exile,^(O)
    together with his priests and officials.^(P)
⁸The destroyer^(Q) will come against every town,
    and not a town will escape.
The valley will be ruined
    and the plateau^(R) destroyed,
    because the Lord has spoken.
⁹Put salt^(S) on Moab,
    for she will be laid waste^[f];^(T)
her towns will become desolate,
    with no one to live in them.

¹⁰“A curse on anyone who is lax in doing the Lord’s work!
A curse on anyone who keeps their sword^(U) from bloodshed!^(V)

¹¹“Moab has been at rest^(W) from youth,
    like wine left on its dregs,^(X)
not poured from one jar to another—
    she has not gone into exile.
So she tastes as she did,
    and her aroma is unchanged.
¹²But days are coming,”
    declares the Lord,
“when I will send men who pour from pitchers,
    and they will pour her out;
they will empty her pitchers
    and smash her jars.
¹³Then Moab will be ashamed^(Y) of Chemosh,^(Z)
    as Israel was ashamed
    when they trusted in Bethel.^(AA)

¹⁴“How can you say, ‘We are warriors,^(AB)
    men valiant in battle’?
¹⁵Moab will be destroyed and her towns invaded;
    her finest young men^(AC) will go down in the slaughter,^(AD)”
    declares the King,^(AE) whose name is the Lord Almighty.^(AF)
¹⁶“The fall of Moab is at hand;^(AG)
    her calamity will come quickly.
¹⁷Mourn for her, all who live around her,
    all who know her fame;^(AH)
say, ‘How broken is the mighty scepter,^(AI)
    how broken the glorious staff!’

¹⁸“Come down from your glory
    and sit on the parched ground,^(AJ)
    you inhabitants of Daughter Dibon,^(AK)
for the one who destroys Moab
    will come up against you
    and ruin your fortified cities.^(AL)
¹⁹Stand by the road and watch,
    you who live in Aroer.^(AM)
Ask the man fleeing and the woman escaping,
    ask them, ‘What has happened?’
²⁰Moab is disgraced, for she is shattered.
    Wail^(AN) and cry out!
Announce by the Arnon^(AO)
    that Moab is destroyed.
²¹Judgment has come to the plateau^(AP)—
    to Holon,^(AQ) Jahzah^(AR) and Mephaath,^(AS)
²²    to Dibon,^(AT) Nebo^(AU) and Beth Diblathaim,
²³    to Kiriathaim,^(AV) Beth Gamul and Beth Meon,^(AW)
²⁴    to Kerioth^(AX) and Bozrah^(AY)—
    to all the towns^(AZ) of Moab, far and near.
²⁵Moab’s horn^[g]^(BA) is cut off;
    her arm^(BB) is broken,”
declares the Lord.

²⁶“Make her drunk,^(BC)
    for she has defied^(BD) the Lord.
Let Moab wallow in her vomit;^(BE)
    let her be an object of ridicule.^(BF)
²⁷Was not Israel the object of your ridicule?^(BG)
    Was she caught among thieves,^(BH)
that you shake your head^(BI) in scorn^(BJ)
    whenever you speak of her?
²⁸Abandon your towns and dwell among the rocks,
    you who live in Moab.
Be like a dove^(BK) that makes its nest
    at the mouth of a cave.^(BL)

²⁹“We have heard of Moab’s pride^(BM)—
    how great is her arrogance!—
of her insolence, her pride, her conceit
    and the haughtiness^(BN) of her heart.
³⁰I know her insolence but it is futile,”
declares the Lord,
    “and her boasts^(BO) accomplish nothing.
³¹Therefore I wail^(BP) over Moab,
    for all Moab I cry out,
    I moan for the people of Kir Hareseth.^(BQ)
³²I weep for you, as Jazer^(BR) weeps,
    you vines of Sibmah.^(BS)
Your branches spread as far as the sea^[h];
    they reached as far as^[i] Jazer.
The destroyer has fallen
    on your ripened fruit and grapes.
³³Joy and gladness are gone
    from the orchards and fields of Moab.
I have stopped the flow of wine^(BT) from the presses;
    no one treads them with shouts of joy.^(BU)
Although there are shouts,
    they are not shouts of joy.

³⁴“The sound of their cry rises
    from Heshbon^(BV) to Elealeh^(BW) and Jahaz,^(BX)
from Zoar^(BY) as far as Horonaim^(BZ) and Eglath Shelishiyah,
    for even the waters of Nimrim are dried up.^(CA)
³⁵In Moab I will put an end
    to those who make offerings on the high places^(CB)
    and burn incense^(CC) to their gods,”
declares the Lord.
³⁶“So my heart laments^(CD) for Moab like the music of a pipe;
    it laments like a pipe for the people of Kir Hareseth.^(CE)
    The wealth they acquired^(CF) is gone.
³⁷Every head is shaved^(CG)
    and every beard^(CH) cut off;
every hand is slashed
    and every waist is covered with sackcloth.^(CI)
³⁸On all the roofs in Moab
    and in the public squares^(CJ)
there is nothing but mourning,
    for I have broken Moab
    like a jar^(CK) that no one wants,”
declares the Lord.
³⁹“How shattered^(CL) she is! How they wail!
    How Moab turns her back in shame!
Moab has become an object of ridicule,^(CM)
    an object of horror to all those around her.”

⁴⁰This is what the Lord says:

“Look! An eagle is swooping^(CN) down,
    spreading its wings^(CO) over Moab.
⁴¹Kerioth^[j]^(CP) will be captured
    and the strongholds taken.
In that day the hearts of Moab’s warriors^(CQ)
    will be like the heart of a woman in labor.^(CR)
⁴²Moab will be destroyed^(CS) as a nation^(CT)
    because she defied^(CU) the Lord.
⁴³Terror^(CV) and pit and snare^(CW) await you,
    you people of Moab,”
declares the Lord.
⁴⁴“Whoever flees^(CX) from the terror
    will fall into a pit,
whoever climbs out of the pit
    will be caught in a snare;
for I will bring on Moab
    the year^(CY) of her punishment,”
declares the Lord.

⁴⁵“In the shadow of Heshbon
    the fugitives stand helpless,
for a fire has gone out from Heshbon,
    a blaze from the midst of Sihon;^(CZ)
it burns the foreheads of Moab,
    the skulls^(DA) of the noisy boasters.
⁴⁶Woe to you, Moab!^(DB)
    The people of Chemosh are destroyed;
your sons are taken into exile
    and your daughters into captivity.

⁴⁷“Yet I will restore^(DC) the fortunes of Moab
in days to come,”
declares the Lord.

Here ends the judgment on Moab.

Living to Please God

4 As for other matters, brothers and sisters,^(A) we instructed you how to live^(B) in order to please God,^(C) as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. ²For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.

³It is God’s will^(D) that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;^(E) ⁴that each of you should learn to control your own body^[a]^(F) in a way that is holy and honorable, ⁵not in passionate lust^(G) like the pagans,^(H) who do not know God;^(I) ⁶and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister.^[b]^(J) The Lord will punish^(K) all those who commit such sins,^(L) as we told you and warned you before. ⁷For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.^(M) ⁸Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.^(N)

⁹Now about your love for one another^(O) we do not need to write to you,^(P) for you yourselves have been taught by God^(Q) to love each other.^(R) ¹⁰And in fact, you do love all of God’s family throughout Macedonia.^(S) Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more,^(T) ¹¹and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands,^(U) just as we told you, ¹²so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders^(V) and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

Believers Who Have Died

¹³Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed^(W) about those who sleep in death,^(X) so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.^(Y) ¹⁴For we believe that Jesus died and rose again,^(Z) and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.^(AA) ¹⁵According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord,^(AB) will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.^(AC) ¹⁶For the Lord himself will come down from heaven,^(AD) with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel^(AE) and with the trumpet call of God,^(AF) and the dead in Christ will rise first.^(AG) ¹⁷After that, we who are still alive and are left^(AH) will be caught up together with them in the clouds^(AI) to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord^(AJ) forever. ¹⁸Therefore encourage one another^(AK) with these words.

The Day of the Lord

5 Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates^(AL) we do not need to write to you,^(AM) ²for you know very well that the day of the Lord^(AN) will come like a thief in the night.^(AO) ³While people are saying, “Peace and safety,”^(AP) destruction will come on them suddenly,^(AQ) as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.^(AR)

⁴But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness^(AS) so that this day should surprise you like a thief.^(AT) ⁵You are all children of the light^(AU) and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. ⁶So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep,^(AV) but let us be awake^(AW) and sober.^(AX) ⁷For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.^(AY) ⁸But since we belong to the day,^(AZ) let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate,^(BA) and the hope of salvation^(BB) as a helmet.^(BC) ⁹For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath^(BD) but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.^(BE) ¹⁰He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.^(BF) ¹¹Therefore encourage one another^(BG) and build each other up,^(BH) just as in fact you are doing.

Final Instructions

¹²Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard^(BI) among you, who care for you in the Lord^(BJ) and who admonish you. ¹³Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.^(BK) ¹⁴And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle^(BL) and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak,^(BM) be patient with everyone. ¹⁵Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong,^(BN) but always strive to do what is good for each other^(BO) and for everyone else.

¹⁶Rejoice always,^(BP) ¹⁷pray continually,^(BQ) ¹⁸give thanks in all circumstances;^(BR) for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

¹⁹Do not quench the Spirit.^(BS) ²⁰Do not treat prophecies^(BT) with contempt ²¹but test them all;^(BU) hold on to what is good,^(BV) ²²reject every kind of evil.

²³May God himself, the God of peace,^(BW) sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul^(BX) and body be kept blameless^(BY) at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.^(BZ) ²⁴The one who calls^(CA) you is faithful,^(CB) and he will do it.^(CC)

²⁵Brothers and sisters, pray for us.^(CD) ²⁶Greet all God’s people with a holy kiss.^(CE) ²⁷I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters.^(CF)

²⁸The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.^(CG)
