New International Version

Allotment for Judah^(A)

15 The allotment for the tribe of Judah, according to its clans, extended down to the territory of Edom,^(B) to the Desert of Zin^(C) in the extreme south.^(D)

²Their southern boundary started from the bay at the southern end of the Dead Sea,^(E) ³crossed south of Scorpion Pass,^(F) continued on to Zin and went over to the south of Kadesh Barnea.^(G) Then it ran past Hezron up to Addar and curved around to Karka. ⁴It then passed along to Azmon^(H) and joined the Wadi of Egypt,^(I) ending at the Mediterranean Sea. This is their^[a] southern boundary.

⁵The eastern boundary^(J) is the Dead Sea^(K) as far as the mouth of the Jordan.

The northern boundary^(L) started from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan, ⁶went up to Beth Hoglah^(M) and continued north of Beth Arabah^(N) to the Stone of Bohan^(O) son of Reuben. ⁷The boundary then went up to Debir^(P) from the Valley of Achor^(Q) and turned north to Gilgal,^(R) which faces the Pass of Adummim south of the gorge. It continued along to the waters of En Shemesh^(S) and came out at En Rogel.^(T) ⁸Then it ran up the Valley of Ben Hinnom^(U) along the southern slope of the Jebusite^(V) city (that is, Jerusalem^(W)). From there it climbed to the top of the hill west of the Hinnom Valley^(X) at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim.^(Y) ⁹From the hilltop the boundary headed toward the spring of the waters of Nephtoah,^(Z) came out at the towns of Mount Ephron and went down toward Baalah^(AA) (that is, Kiriath Jearim).^(AB) ¹⁰Then it curved westward from Baalah^(AC) to Mount Seir,^(AD) ran along the northern slope of Mount Jearim (that is, Kesalon), continued down to Beth Shemesh^(AE) and crossed to Timnah.^(AF) ¹¹It went to the northern slope of Ekron,^(AG) turned toward Shikkeron, passed along to Mount Baalah^(AH) and reached Jabneel.^(AI) The boundary ended at the sea.

These are the boundaries around the people of Judah by their clans.

¹³In accordance with the Lord’s command to him, Joshua gave to Caleb^(AK) son of Jephunneh a portion in Judah—Kiriath Arba^(AL), that is, Hebron.^(AM) (Arba was the forefather of Anak.)^(AN) ¹⁴From Hebron Caleb drove out the three Anakites^(AO)—Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai,^(AP) the sons of Anak.^(AQ) ¹⁵From there he marched against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher). ¹⁶And Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Aksah^(AR) in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.” ¹⁷Othniel^(AS) son of Kenaz, Caleb’s brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage.

¹⁸One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him^[b] to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What can I do for you?”

¹⁹She replied, “Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev,^(AT) give me also springs of water.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.^(AU)

Kabzeel,^(AW) Eder,^(AX) Jagur, ²²Kinah, Dimonah, Adadah, ²³Kedesh,^(AY) Hazor,^(AZ) Ithnan, ²⁴Ziph,^(BA) Telem, Bealoth, ²⁵Hazor Hadattah, Kerioth Hezron (that is, Hazor),^(BB) ²⁶Amam, Shema, Moladah,^(BC) ²⁷Hazar Gaddah, Heshmon, Beth Pelet, ²⁸Hazar Shual,^(BD) Beersheba,^(BE) Biziothiah, ²⁹Baalah,^(BF) Iyim, Ezem,^(BG) ³⁰Eltolad,^(BH) Kesil, Hormah,^(BI) ³¹Ziklag,^(BJ) Madmannah,^(BK) Sansannah, ³²Lebaoth, Shilhim, Ain^(BL) and Rimmon^(BM)—a total of twenty-nine towns and their villages.

³³In the western foothills:

Eshtaol,^(BN) Zorah,^(BO) Ashnah,^(BP) ³⁴Zanoah,^(BQ) En Gannim,^(BR) Tappuah,^(BS) Enam, ³⁵Jarmuth,^(BT) Adullam,^(BU) Sokoh,^(BV) Azekah,^(BW) ³⁶Shaaraim,^(BX) Adithaim and Gederah^(BY) (or Gederothaim)^[c]—fourteen towns and their villages.

³⁷Zenan, Hadashah, Migdal Gad, ³⁸Dilean, Mizpah,^(BZ) Joktheel,^(CA) ³⁹Lachish,^(CB) Bozkath,^(CC) Eglon,^(CD) ⁴⁰Kabbon, Lahmas, Kitlish, ⁴¹Gederoth,^(CE) Beth Dagon,^(CF) Naamah and Makkedah^(CG)—sixteen towns and their villages.

⁴²Libnah,^(CH) Ether, Ashan,^(CI) ⁴³Iphtah, Ashnah,^(CJ) Nezib, ⁴⁴Keilah,^(CK) Akzib^(CL) and Mareshah^(CM)—nine towns and their villages.

⁴⁵Ekron,^(CN) with its surrounding settlements and villages; ⁴⁶west of Ekron, all that were in the vicinity of Ashdod,^(CO) together with their villages; ⁴⁷Ashdod,^(CP) its surrounding settlements and villages; and Gaza, its settlements and villages, as far as the Wadi of Egypt^(CQ) and the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea.^(CR)

⁴⁸In the hill country:

Shamir,^(CS) Jattir,^(CT) Sokoh,^(CU) ⁴⁹Dannah, Kiriath Sannah (that is, Debir^(CV)), ⁵⁰Anab,^(CW) Eshtemoh,^(CX) Anim, ⁵¹Goshen,^(CY) Holon^(CZ) and Giloh^(DA)—eleven towns and their villages.

⁵²Arab, Dumah,^(DB) Eshan, ⁵³Janim, Beth Tappuah, Aphekah, ⁵⁴Humtah, Kiriath Arba^(DC) (that is, Hebron) and Zior—nine towns and their villages.

⁵⁵Maon,^(DD) Carmel,^(DE) Ziph,^(DF) Juttah,^(DG) ⁵⁶Jezreel,^(DH) Jokdeam, Zanoah,^(DI) ⁵⁷Kain, Gibeah^(DJ) and Timnah^(DK)—ten towns and their villages.

⁵⁸Halhul, Beth Zur,^(DL) Gedor,^(DM) ⁵⁹Maarath, Beth Anoth and Eltekon—six towns and their villages.^[d]

⁶⁰Kiriath Baal^(DN) (that is, Kiriath Jearim^(DO)) and Rabbah^(DP)—two towns and their villages.

⁶¹In the wilderness:^(DQ)

Beth Arabah,^(DR) Middin, Sekakah, ⁶²Nibshan, the City of Salt and En Gedi^(DS)—six towns and their villages.

⁶³Judah could not^(DT) dislodge the Jebusites^(DU), who were living in Jerusalem;^(DV) to this day the Jebusites live there with the people of Judah.^(DW)

Warning Against Adultery

5 My son,^(A) pay attention to my wisdom,
    turn your ear to my words^(B) of insight,
²that you may maintain discretion
    and your lips may preserve knowledge.
³For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey,
    and her speech is smoother than oil;^(C)
⁴but in the end she is bitter as gall,^(D)
    sharp as a double-edged sword.
⁵Her feet go down to death;
    her steps lead straight to the grave.^(E)
⁶She gives no thought to the way of life;
    her paths wander aimlessly, but she does not know it.^(F)

⁷Now then, my sons, listen^(G) to me;
    do not turn aside from what I say.
⁸Keep to a path far from her,^(H)
    do not go near the door of her house,
⁹lest you lose your honor to others
    and your dignity^[a] to one who is cruel,

¹⁵Drink water from your own cistern,
    running water from your own well.

    and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.^(N)

    may her breasts satisfy you always,

²⁰Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s wife?
    Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman?

²²The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them;^(S)

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

13 It was just before the Passover Festival.^(A) Jesus knew that the hour had come^(B) for him to leave this world and go to the Father.^(C) Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

²The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.^(D) ³Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power,^(E) and that he had come from God^(F) and was returning to God; ⁴so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.^(G) ⁵After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet,^(H) drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

⁶He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

⁷Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”^(I)

⁸“No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”

Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”

⁹“Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”

¹⁰Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean,^(J) though not every one of you.”^(K) ¹¹For he knew who was going to betray him,^(L) and that was why he said not every one was clean.

¹²When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. ¹³“You call me ‘Teacher’^(M) and ‘Lord,’^(N) and rightly so, for that is what I am. ¹⁴Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.^(O) ¹⁵I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.^(P) ¹⁶Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master,^(Q) nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. ¹⁷Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.^(R)

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

¹⁸“I am not referring to all of you;^(S) I know those I have chosen.^(T) But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture:^(U) ‘He who shared my bread^(V) has turned^[a]^(W) against me.’^[b]^(X)

¹⁹“I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe^(Y) that I am who I am.^(Z) ²⁰Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”^(AA)

²¹After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit^(AB) and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”^(AC)

²²His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. ²³One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved,^(AD) was reclining next to him. ²⁴Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”

²⁵Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”^(AE)

²⁶Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas,^(AF) the son of Simon Iscariot. ²⁷As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.^(AG)

So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” ²⁸But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. ²⁹Since Judas had charge of the money,^(AH) some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival,^(AI) or to give something to the poor.^(AJ) ³⁰As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.^(AK)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial^(AL)

³¹When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man^(AM) is glorified^(AN) and God is glorified in him.^(AO) ³²If God is glorified in him,^[c] God will glorify the Son in himself,^(AP) and will glorify him at once.

³³“My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.^(AQ)

³⁴“A new command^(AR) I give you: Love one another.^(AS) As I have loved you, so you must love one another.^(AT) ³⁵By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”^(AU)

³⁶Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”^(AV)

Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now,^(AW) but you will follow later.”^(AX)

³⁷Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

³⁸Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!^(AY)
