1 Corinthians 12-14

12 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. ² Ye know that when ye were Gentiles ye were led away unto those dumb idols, howsoever ye might be led. ³ Wherefore I make known unto you, that no man speaking in the Spirit of God saith, Jesus is anathema; and no man can say, Jesus is Lord, but in the Holy Spirit.

⁴ Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. ⁵ And there are diversities of ministrations, and the same Lord. ⁶ And there are diversities of workings, but the same God, who worketh all things in all. ⁷ But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit to profit withal. ⁸ For to one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom; and to another the word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit: ⁹ to another faith, in the same Spirit; and to another gifts of healings, in the one Spirit; ¹⁰ and to another workings of ^[a]miracles; and to another prophecy; and to another discernings of spirits: to another divers kinds of tongues; and to another the interpretation of tongues: ¹¹ but all these worketh the one and the same Spirit, dividing to each one severally even as he will.

¹² For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ. ¹³ For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all made to drink of one Spirit. ¹⁴ For the body is not one member, but many. ¹⁵ If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; it is not therefore not of the body. ¹⁶ And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; it is not therefore not of the body. ¹⁷ If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? ¹⁸ But now hath God set the members each one of them in the body, even as it pleased him. ¹⁹ And if they were all one member, where were the body? ²⁰ But now they are many members, but one body. ²¹ And the eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of thee: or again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. ²² Nay, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be more feeble are necessary: ²³ and those parts of the body, which we think to be less honorable, upon these we ^[b]bestow more abundant honor; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness; ²⁴ whereas our comely parts have no need: but God tempered the body together, giving more abundant honor to that part which lacked; ²⁵ that there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. ²⁶ And whether one member suffereth, all the members suffer with it; or one member is ^[c]honored, all the members rejoice with it. ²⁷ Now ye are the body of Christ, and ^[d]severally members thereof. ²⁸ And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdly teachers, then ^[e]miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, ^[f]governments, divers kinds of tongues. ²⁹ Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of ^[g]miracles? ³⁰ have all gifts of healings? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? ³¹ But desire earnestly the greater gifts. And moreover a most excellent way show I unto you.

13 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am become sounding brass, or a clanging cymbal. ² And if I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. ³ And if I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body ^[h]to be burned, but have not love, it profiteth me nothing. ⁴ Love suffereth long, and is kind; love envieth not; love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, ⁵ doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not its own, is not provoked, taketh not account of evil; ⁶ rejoiceth not in unrighteousness, but rejoiceth with the truth; ^7 [i]beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. ⁸ Love never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall be done away; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall be done away. ⁹ For we know in part, and we prophesy in part; ¹⁰ but when that which is perfect is come, that which is in part shall be done away. ¹¹ When I was a child, I spake as a child, I felt as a child, I thought as a child: now that I am become a man, I have put away childish things. ¹² For now we see in a mirror, ^[j]darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know fully even as also I was fully known. ¹³ But now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; and the ^[k]greatest of these is love.

14 Follow after love; yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. ² For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no man ^[l]understandeth; but in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. ³ But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men edification, and ^[m]exhortation, and consolation. ⁴ He that speaketh in a tongue ^[n]edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth ^[o]edifieth the church. ⁵ Now I would have you all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy: and greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. ⁶ But now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching? ⁷ Even things without life, giving a voice, whether pipe or harp, if they give not a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? ⁸ For if the trumpet give an uncertain voice, who shall prepare himself for war? ⁹ So also ye, unless ye utter by the tongue speech easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye will be speaking into the air. ¹⁰ There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and ^[p]no kind is without signification. ¹¹ If then I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be to him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh will be a barbarian ^[q]unto me. ¹² So also ye, since ye are zealous of ^[r]spiritual gifts, seek that ye may abound unto the edifying of the church. ¹³ Wherefore let him that speaketh in a tongue pray that he may interpret. ¹⁴ For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. ¹⁵ What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. ¹⁶ Else if thou bless with the spirit, how shall he that filleth the place of ^[s]the unlearned say the Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he knoweth not what thou sayest? ¹⁷ For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not ^[t]edified. ¹⁸ I thank God, I speak with tongues more than you all: ¹⁹ howbeit in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

²⁰ Brethren, be not children in mind: yet in malice be ye babes, but in mind be ^[u]men. ²¹ In the law it is written, ^[v]By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers will I speak unto this people; and not even thus will they hear me, saith the Lord. ²² Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to the unbelieving: but prophesying is for a sign, not to the unbelieving, but to them that believe. ²³ If therefore the whole church be assembled together and all speak with tongues, and there come in men unlearned or unbelieving, will they not say that ye are mad? ²⁴ But if all prophesy, and there come in one unbelieving or unlearned, he is ^[w]reproved by all, he is judged by all; ²⁵ the secrets of his heart are made manifest; and so he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is ^[x]among you indeed.

²⁶ What is it then, brethren? When ye come together, each one hath a psalm, hath a teaching, hath a revelation, hath a tongue, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying. ²⁷ If any man speaketh in a tongue, let it be by two, or at the most three, and that in turn; and let one interpret: ²⁸ but if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. ²⁹ And let the prophets speak by two or three, and let the others ^[y]discern. ³⁰ But if a revelation be made to another sitting by, let the first keep silence. ³¹ For ye all can prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be ^[z]exhorted; ³² and the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets; ³³ for God is not a God of confusion, but of peace.

As in all the churches of the saints, ³⁴ let the women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but let them be in subjection, as also ^[aa]saith the law. ³⁵ And if they would learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home: for it is shameful for a woman to speak in the church. ³⁶ What? was it from you that the word of God went forth? or came it unto you alone?

³⁷ If any man thinketh himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him take knowledge of the things which I write unto you, that they are the commandment of the Lord. ^38 [ab]But if any man is ignorant, let him be ignorant.

³⁹ Wherefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. ⁴⁰ But let all things be done decently and in order.
