⁶ Abram traveled through the land^(A) as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh^(B) at Shechem.^(C) At that time the Canaanites^(D) were in the land.

⁷ The Lord appeared to Abram^(A) and said, “To your offspring^[a] I will give this land.^(B)”^(C) So he built an altar there to the Lord,^(D) who had appeared to him.

¹⁸ After Jacob came from Paddan Aram,^[a](A) he arrived safely at the city of Shechem^(B) in Canaan and camped within sight of the city. ¹⁹ For a hundred pieces of silver,^[b] he bought from the sons of Hamor,^(C) the father of Shechem,^(D) the plot of ground^(E) where he pitched his tent.^{(F) 20} There he set up an altar^(G) and called it El Elohe Israel.^[c]

² So Jacob said to his household^(A) and to all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods^(B) you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes.^{(C) 3} Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God,^(D) who answered me in the day of my distress^(E) and who has been with me wherever I have gone.^(F)” ⁴ So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears,^(G) and Jacob buried them under the oak^(H) at Shechem.^(I)
