Thanksgiving Expressed

12 Then you will say on that day,
(A)I will give thanks to You, Lord;
For although (B)You were angry with me,
Your anger is turned away,
And You comfort me.
Behold, (C)God is my salvation,
I will (D)trust and not be afraid;
For (E)the Lord God is my strength and song,
And He has become my salvation.”
Therefore you will joyously (F)draw water
From the (G)springs of salvation.
And on that day you will (H)say,
(I)Give thanks to the Lord, call on His name.
(J)Make known His deeds among the peoples;
[a]Make them remember that His name is exalted.”
(K)Praise the Lord in song, for He has done [b]glorious things;
Let this be known throughout the earth.
(L)Rejoice and shout for joy, you inhabitant of Zion,
For (M)great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.

Prophecies about Babylon

13 The (N)pronouncement concerning (O)Babylon which (P)Isaiah the son of Amoz saw:

(Q)Lift up a flag on the [c](R)bare hill,
Raise your voice to them,
(S)Wave the hand that they may (T)enter the doors of the nobles.
I have commanded My consecrated ones,
I have also called for My (U)warriors
Who boast in My eminence,
To execute My anger.
A (V)sound of a roar on the mountains,
Like that of many people!
A sound of an uproar of kingdoms,
Of nations gathered together!
The Lord of armies is mustering the army for battle.
They are coming from a distant country,
From the [d](W)farthest horizons,
The Lord and the weapons of His (X)indignation,
To (Y)destroy the whole land.

Judgment on the Day of the Lord

Wail, for the (Z)day of the Lord is near!
It will come as (AA)destruction from [e]the Almighty.
Therefore (AB)all hands will fall limp,
And every human (AC)heart will melt.
They will be (AD)terrified,
Pains and anguish will take hold of them;
They will (AE)writhe like a woman in labor,
They will look at one another in astonishment,
Their faces aflame.
Behold, (AF)the day of the Lord is coming,
Cruel, with fury and burning anger,
To make the land a desolation;
And He will exterminate its sinners from it.
10 For the (AG)stars of heaven and their constellations
Will not flash their light;
The (AH)sun will be dark when it rises
And the moon will not shed its light.
11 So I will (AI)punish the world for its evil
And the (AJ)wicked for their wrongdoing;
I will also put an end to the (AK)audacity of the proud
And humiliate the (AL)arrogance of the [f](AM)tyrants.
12 I will make mortal man (AN)scarcer than pure gold
And mankind than the (AO)gold of Ophir.
13 Therefore I will make the (AP)heavens tremble,
And (AQ)the earth will be shaken from its place
At the fury of the Lord of armies
In (AR)the day of His burning anger.
14 And it will be that, like a hunted gazelle,
Or like (AS)sheep with no one to gather them,
Each of them will turn to his own people,
And each of them will flee to his own land.
15 Anyone who is found will be (AT)thrust through,
And anyone who is captured will fall by the sword.
16 Their (AU)little ones also will be dashed to pieces
Before their eyes;
Their houses will be plundered
And their wives raped.

Babylon Will Fall to the Medes

17 Behold, I am going to (AV)stir up the Medes against them,
Who will not value silver or (AW)take pleasure in gold.
18 And their bows will [g]mow down the (AX)young men,
They will not even have compassion on the fruit of the womb,
Nor will their (AY)eye pity [h]children.
19 And (AZ)Babylon, the (BA)beauty of kingdoms, the glory of the Chaldeans’ pride,
Will be as when God (BB)overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.
20 It will (BC)never be inhabited or lived in from generation to generation;
Nor will the (BD)Arab pitch his tent there,
Nor will shepherds allow their flocks to lie down there.
21 But (BE)desert creatures will lie down there,
And their houses will be full of [i]owls;
Ostriches also will live there, and [j]shaggy goats will frolic there.
22 [k]Hyenas will howl in their fortified towers
And jackals in their luxurious (BF)palaces.
Her fateful time also [l]will soon come,
And her days will not be prolonged.

Israel’s Taunt against Babylon

14 When the Lord (BG)has compassion on Jacob and again (BH)chooses Israel, and settles them on their own land, then (BI)strangers will join them and attach themselves to the house of Jacob. The peoples will take them along and bring them to their place, and the (BJ)house of Israel will make them their own possession in the land of the Lord (BK)as male and female servants; and [m]they will take their captors captive and will rule over their oppressors.

And it will be on the day when the Lord gives you (BL)rest from your hardship, your turmoil, and from the harsh service in which you have been enslaved, that you will (BM)take up this [n]taunt against the king of Babylon, and say,

“How (BN)the oppressor has ceased,
And how the [o]onslaught has ceased!
The Lord has broken the staff of the wicked,
The scepter of rulers,
(BO)Which used to strike the peoples in fury with unceasing strokes,
Which [p]subdued the nations in anger with unrestrained persecution.
The whole earth is at rest and is quiet;
They (BP)break forth into shouts of joy.
Even the (BQ)juniper trees rejoice over you, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying,
‘Since you have been laid low, no tree cutter comes up against us.’
(BR)Sheol below is excited about you, to meet you when you come;
It stirs the [q]spirits of the dead for you, all the [r]leaders of the earth;
It raises all the kings of the nations from their thrones.
10 (BS)They will all respond and say to you,
‘Even you have become weak as we,
You have become like us.
11 Your (BT)pride and the music of your harps
Have been brought down to Sheol;
Maggots are spread out as your bed beneath you
And worms are your covering.’
12 How you have (BU)fallen from heaven,
You [s](BV)star of the morning, son of the dawn!
You have been cut down to the earth,
You who defeated the nations!
13 But you said in your heart,
‘I will (BW)ascend to heaven;
I will (BX)raise my throne above the stars of God,
And I will sit on the mount of assembly
In the recesses of the north.
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;
(BY)I will make myself like the Most High.’
15 Nevertheless you (BZ)will be brought down to Sheol,
To the recesses of the pit.
16 Those who see you will stare at you,
They will [t]closely examine you, saying,
‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble,
Who shook kingdoms,
17 Who made the world like a (CA)wilderness
And overthrew its cities,
Who (CB)did not [u]allow his prisoners to go home?’
18 All the kings of the nations lie in glory,
Each in his own [v]tomb.
19 But you have been (CC)hurled out of your tomb
Like [w]a rejected branch,
[x]Clothed with those killed who have been pierced with a sword,
Who go down to the stones of the (CD)pit
Like a (CE)trampled corpse.
20 You will not be united with them in burial,
Because you have ruined your country,
You have killed your people.
May the (CF)descendants of evildoers never be mentioned.
21 Prepare a place of slaughter for his sons
Because of the (CG)wrongdoing of their fathers.
They must not arise and take possession of the earth,
And fill the surface of the world with cities.”

22 “I will rise up against them,” declares the Lord of armies, “and eliminate from Babylon (CH)name and survivors, (CI)offspring and descendants,” declares the Lord. 23 “I will also make it the property of the (CJ)hedgehog and swamps of water, and I will sweep it away with the broom of (CK)destruction,” declares the Lord of armies.

Judgment on Assyria

24 The Lord of armies has sworn, saying, “Certainly, (CL)just as I have intended, so it has happened, and just as I have planned, so it will stand, 25 to (CM)break Assyria in My land, and I will trample him on My mountains. Then his (CN)yoke will be removed from them, and his burden removed from their shoulders. 26 This is the (CO)plan [y]devised against the entire earth; and this is the (CP)hand that is stretched out against all the nations. 27 For (CQ)the Lord of armies has planned, and who can frustrate it? And as for His stretched-out hand, who can turn it back?”

Judgment on Philistia

28 In the (CR)year that King Ahaz died, this (CS)pronouncement came:

29 “Do not rejoice, (CT)Philistia, all of you,
Because the rod that (CU)struck you is broken;
For from the serpent’s root a (CV)viper will come out,
And its fruit will be a (CW)winged serpent.
30 [z]Those who are most (CX)helpless will eat,
And the poor will lie down in security;
I will kill your root with (CY)famine,
And it will kill your survivors.
31 Wail, you (CZ)gate; cry, you city;
[aa]Melt away, (DA)Philistia, all of you!
For smoke comes from the (DB)north,
And (DC)there is no straggler in his ranks.
32 What answer will one give the (DD)messengers of the nation?
That (DE)the Lord has founded Zion,
And (DF)the poor of His people will take refuge in it.”

Judgment on Moab

15 The pronouncement concerning (DG)Moab:

Certainly in a night (DH)Ar of Moab is devastated and ruined;
Certainly in a night Kir of Moab is devastated and ruined.
[ab]The people have gone up to the [ac]temple and to (DI)Dibon, to the high places to weep.
Moab wails over Nebo and Medeba;
Everyone’s head is (DJ)bald and every beard is cut off.
In their streets they have put on (DK)sackcloth;
(DL)On their housetops and in their public squares
Everyone is wailing, [ad](DM)overcome with weeping.
(DN)Heshbon and Elealeh also cry out,
Their voice is heard all the way to Jahaz;
Therefore the [ae]armed men of Moab cry aloud;
His soul trembles within him.
My heart cries out for Moab;
His fugitives are as far as (DO)Zoar and Eglath-shelishiyah,
For they go up the (DP)ascent of Luhith weeping;
Indeed, on the road to Horonaim they raise a cry of distress (DQ)over their collapse.
For the (DR)waters of Nimrim are [af]desolate.
Indeed, the grass is withered, the new growth has died,
There is (DS)no greenery.
Therefore the (DT)abundance which they have acquired and stored up,
They carry it off over the brook of [ag]Arabim.
For the cry of distress has gone around the territory of Moab,
Its wailing goes as far as Eglaim and its howling to Beer-elim.
For the waters of Dimon are full of [ah]blood;
I will certainly bring added woes upon Dimon,
A (DU)lion upon the fugitives of Moab and the remnant of the land.

A Hymn of Praise

12 And (A)in that day you will say:

“O Lord, I will praise You;
Though You were angry with me,
Your anger is turned away, and You comfort me.
Behold, God is my salvation,
I will trust and not be afraid;
(B)‘For (C)Yah, the Lord, is my strength and song;
He also has become my salvation.’ ”

Therefore with joy you will draw (D)water
From the wells of salvation.

And in that day you will say:

(E)“Praise the Lord, call upon His name;
(F)Declare His deeds among the peoples,
Make mention that His (G)name is exalted.
(H)Sing to the Lord,
For He has done excellent things;
This is known in all the earth.
(I)Cry out and shout, O inhabitant of Zion,
For great is (J)the Holy One of Israel in your midst!”

Proclamation Against Babylon

13 The (K)burden[a] against Babylon which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw.

“Lift(L) up a banner (M)on the high mountain,
Raise your voice to them;
(N)Wave your hand, that they may enter the gates of the nobles.
I have commanded My [b]sanctified ones;
I have also called (O)My mighty ones for My anger—
Those who (P)rejoice in My exaltation.”

The (Q)noise of a multitude in the mountains,
Like that of many people!
A tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together!
The Lord of hosts musters
The army for battle.
They come from a far country,
From the end of heaven—
The (R)Lord and His [c]weapons of indignation,
To destroy the whole (S)land.

Wail, (T)for the day of the Lord is at hand!
(U)It will come as destruction from the Almighty.
Therefore all hands will be limp,
Every man’s heart will melt,
And they will be afraid.
(V)Pangs[d] and sorrows will take hold of them;
They will be in pain as a woman in childbirth;
They will be amazed at one another;
Their faces will be like flames.

Behold, (W)the day of the Lord comes,
Cruel, with both wrath and fierce anger,
To lay the land desolate;
And He will destroy (X)its sinners from it.
10 For the stars of heaven and their constellations
Will not give their light;
The sun will be (Y)darkened in its going forth,
And the moon will not cause its light to shine.

11 “I will (Z)punish the world for its evil,
And the wicked for their iniquity;
(AA)I will halt the arrogance of the proud,
And will lay low the haughtiness of the [e]terrible.
12 I will make a mortal more rare than fine gold,
A man more than the golden wedge of Ophir.
13 (AB)Therefore I will shake the heavens,
And the earth will move out of her place,
In the wrath of the Lord of hosts
And in (AC)the day of His fierce anger.
14 It shall be as the hunted gazelle,
And as a sheep that no man [f]takes up;
(AD)Every man will turn to his own people,
And everyone will flee to his own land.
15 Everyone who is found will be thrust through,
And everyone who is captured will fall by the sword.
16 Their children also will be (AE)dashed to pieces before their eyes;
Their houses will be plundered
And their wives (AF)ravished.

17 “Behold,(AG) I will stir up the Medes against them,
Who will not [g]regard silver;
And as for gold, they will not delight in it.
18 Also their bows will dash the young men to pieces,
And they will have no pity on the fruit of the womb;
Their eye will not spare children.
19 (AH)And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms,
The beauty of the Chaldeans’ pride,
Will be as when God overthrew (AI)Sodom and Gomorrah.
20 (AJ)It will never be inhabited,
Nor will it be settled from generation to generation;
Nor will the Arabian pitch tents there,
Nor will the shepherds make their sheepfolds there.
21 (AK)But wild beasts of the desert will lie there,
And their houses will be full of [h]owls;
Ostriches will dwell there,
And wild goats will caper there.
22 The hyenas will howl in their citadels,
And jackals in their pleasant palaces.
(AL)Her time is near to come,
And her days will not be prolonged.”

Mercy on Jacob

14 For the Lord (AM)will have mercy on Jacob, and (AN)will still choose Israel, and settle them in their own land. (AO)The strangers will be joined with them, and they will cling to the house of Jacob. Then people will take them (AP)and bring them to their place, and the house of Israel will possess them for servants and maids in the land of the Lord; they will take them captive whose captives they were, (AQ)and rule over their oppressors.

Fall of the King of Babylon

It shall come to pass in the day the Lord gives you rest from your sorrow, and from your fear and the hard bondage in which you were made to serve, that you (AR)will take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say:

“How the oppressor has ceased,
The (AS)golden[i] city ceased!
The Lord has broken (AT)the staff of the wicked,
The scepter of the rulers;
He who struck the people in wrath with a continual stroke,
He who ruled the nations in anger,
Is persecuted and no one hinders.
The whole earth is at rest and quiet;
They break forth into singing.
(AU)Indeed the cypress trees rejoice over you,
And the cedars of Lebanon,
Saying, ‘Since you [j]were cut down,
No woodsman has come up against us.’

“Hell(AV)[k] from beneath is excited about you,
To meet you at your coming;
It stirs up the dead for you,
All the chief ones of the earth;
It has raised up from their thrones
All the kings of the nations.
10 They all shall (AW)speak and say to you:
‘Have you also become as weak as we?
Have you become like us?
11 Your pomp is brought down to Sheol,
And the sound of your stringed instruments;
The maggot is spread under you,
And worms cover you.’

The Fall of Lucifer

12 “How(AX) you are fallen from heaven,
O [l]Lucifer, son of the morning!
How you are cut down to the ground,
You who weakened the nations!
13 For you have said in your heart:
(AY)‘I will ascend into heaven,
(AZ)I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;
I will also sit on the (BA)mount of the congregation
(BB)On the farthest sides of the north;
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
(BC)I will be like the Most High.’
15 Yet you (BD)shall be brought down to Sheol,
To the [m]lowest depths of the Pit.

16 “Those who see you will gaze at you,
And consider you, saying:
Is this the man who made the earth tremble,
Who shook kingdoms,
17 Who made the world as a wilderness
And destroyed its cities,
Who [n]did not open the house of his prisoners?’

18 “All the kings of the nations,
All of them, sleep in glory,
Everyone in his own house;
19 But you are cast out of your grave
Like an [o]abominable branch,
Like the garment of those who are slain,
[p]Thrust through with a sword,
Who go down to the stones of the pit,
Like a corpse trodden underfoot.
20 You will not be joined with them in burial,
Because you have destroyed your land
And slain your people.
(BE)The brood of evildoers shall never be named.
21 Prepare slaughter for his children
(BF)Because of the iniquity of their fathers,
Lest they rise up and possess the land,
And fill the face of the world with cities.”

Babylon Destroyed

22 “For I will rise up against them,” says the Lord of hosts,
“And cut off from Babylon (BG)the name and (BH)remnant,
(BI)And offspring and posterity,” says the Lord.
23 “I will also make it a possession for the (BJ)porcupine,
And marshes of muddy water;
I will sweep it with the broom of destruction,” says the Lord of hosts.

Assyria Destroyed

24 The Lord of hosts has sworn, saying,
“Surely, as I have thought, so it shall come to pass,
And as I have purposed, so it shall (BK)stand:
25 That I will break the (BL)Assyrian in My land,
And on My mountains tread him underfoot.
Then (BM)his yoke shall be removed from them,
And his burden removed from their shoulders.
26 This is the (BN)purpose that is purposed against the whole earth,
And this is the hand that is stretched out over all the nations.
27 For the Lord of hosts has (BO)purposed,
And who will annul it?
His hand is stretched out,
And who will turn it back?”

Philistia Destroyed

28 This is the [q]burden which came in the year that (BP)King Ahaz died.

29 “Do not rejoice, all you of Philistia,
(BQ)Because the rod that struck you is broken;
For out of the serpent’s roots will come forth a viper,
(BR)And its offspring will be a fiery flying serpent.
30 The firstborn of the poor will feed,
And the needy will lie down in safety;
I will kill your roots with famine,
And it will slay your remnant.
31 Wail, O gate! Cry, O city!
All you of Philistia are dissolved;
For smoke will come from the north,
And no one will be alone in his [r]appointed times.”

32 What will they answer the messengers of the nation?
That (BS)the Lord has founded Zion,
And (BT)the poor of His people shall take refuge in it.

Proclamation Against Moab

15 The (BU)burden[s] against Moab.

Because in the night (BV)Ar of (BW)Moab is laid waste
And destroyed,
Because in the night Kir of Moab is laid waste
And destroyed,
He has gone up to the [t]temple and Dibon,
To the high places to weep.
Moab will wail over Nebo and over Medeba;
(BX)On all their heads will be baldness,
And every beard cut off.
In their streets they will clothe themselves with sackcloth;
On the tops of their houses
And in their streets
Everyone will wail, (BY)weeping bitterly.
Heshbon and Elealeh will cry out,
Their voice shall be heard as far as (BZ)Jahaz;
Therefore the [u]armed soldiers of Moab will cry out;
His life will be burdensome to him.

“My(CA) heart will cry out for Moab;
His fugitives shall flee to Zoar,
Like [v]a three-year-old heifer.
For (CB)by the Ascent of Luhith
They will go up with weeping;
For in the way of Horonaim
They will raise up a cry of destruction,
For the waters (CC)of Nimrim will be desolate,
For the green grass has withered away;
The grass fails, there is nothing green.
Therefore the abundance they have gained,
And what they have laid up,
They will carry away to the Brook of the Willows.
For the cry has gone all around the borders of Moab,
Its wailing to Eglaim
And its wailing to Beer Elim.
For the waters of [w]Dimon will be full of blood;
Because I will bring more upon Dimon,
(CD)Lions upon him who escapes from Moab,
And on the remnant of the land.”
