³⁴ Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.^{(A) 35} Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.^{(B) 36} So if the Son sets you free,^(C) you will be free indeed.

Life by the Spirit

¹³ You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free.^(A) But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh^[a];^(B) rather, serve one another^(C) humbly in love.

¹⁶ Live as free people,^(A) but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil;^(B) live as God’s slaves.^(C)

¹⁹ They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.”^(A)
