John 5:16-47

¹⁶For this reason ^(A)the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on a Sabbath. ¹⁷But He answered them, “My Father ^[a]is working until now, and I Myself am working.”

Jesus’ Equality with God

¹⁸For this reason therefore ^(B)the Jews ^(C)were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, ^(D)making Himself equal with God.

¹⁹Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(E)the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever ^[b]the Father does, these things the Son also does in the same way. ²⁰^(F)For the Father loves the Son and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him ^(G)greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. ²¹For just as the Father raises the dead and ^(H)gives them life, so ^(I)the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. ²²For not even the Father judges anyone, but ^(J)He has given all judgment to the Son, ²³so that all will honor the Son just as they honor the Father. ^(K)The one who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

²⁴“Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who hears My word, and ^(L)believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and ^(M)does not come into judgment, but has ^(N)passed out of death into life.

Two Resurrections

²⁵Truly, truly, I say to you, ^[c]^(O)a time is coming and ^[d]even now has arrived, when ^(P)the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who ^(Q)hear will live. ²⁶For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He ^(R)gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; ²⁷and He gave Him authority to ^(S)execute judgment, because He is ^[e]the Son of Man. ²⁸Do not be amazed at this; for ^[f]^(T)a time is coming when ^(U)all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, ²⁹and will come out: ^(V)those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the bad deeds to a resurrection of judgment.

³⁰“^(W)I can do nothing ^[g]on My own. As I hear, I judge; and ^(X)My judgment is ^[h]righteous, because I do not seek My own will but ^(Y)the will of Him who sent Me.

³¹“^(Z)If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not ^[i]true. ³²There is ^(AA)another who testifies about Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.

Testimony of John the Baptist

³³You have sent messengers to John, and he ^(AB)has testified to the truth. ³⁴But ^(AC)the testimony I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. ³⁵He was ^(AD)the lamp that was burning and shining, and you ^(AE)were willing to rejoice for ^[j]a while in his light.

Testimony of Works

³⁶But the testimony I have is greater than the testimony of John; for ^(AF)the works which the Father has given Me ^(AG)to accomplish—the very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father ^(AH)has sent Me.

Testimony of the Father

³⁷And the Father who sent Me, ^(AI)He has testified about Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. ³⁸Also you do not have ^(AJ)His word remaining in you, because you do not believe Him whom He ^(AK)sent.

Testimony of the Scripture

³⁹^[k]^(AL)You examine the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is ^(AM)those very Scriptures that testify about Me; ⁴⁰and yet you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. ⁴¹^(AN)I do not receive glory from people; ⁴²but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. ⁴³I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not ^[l]receive Me; ^(AO)if another comes in his own name, you will ^[m]receive him. ⁴⁴How can you believe, when you ^[n]^(AP)accept ^[o]glory from one another and you do not seek ^(AQ)the ^[p]glory that is from ^(AR)the one and only God? ⁴⁵Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is ^(AS)Moses, in whom you have put your hope. ⁴⁶For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for ^(AT)he wrote about Me. ⁴⁷But ^(AU)if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”
