The Majesty and Condescension of God

113 Praise[a] the Lord!

(A)Praise, O servants of the Lord,
Praise the name of the Lord!
(B)Blessed be the name of the Lord
From this time forth and forevermore!
(C)From the rising of the sun to its going down
The Lord’s name is to be praised.

The Lord is (D)high above all nations,
(E)His glory above the heavens.
(F)Who is like the Lord our God,
Who dwells on high,
(G)Who humbles Himself to behold
The things that are in the heavens and in the earth?

(H)He raises the poor out of the dust,
And lifts the (I)needy out of the ash heap,
That He may (J)seat him with princes—
With the princes of His people.
(K)He grants the [b]barren woman a home,
Like a joyful mother of children.

Praise the Lord!

The Power of God in His Deliverance of Israel(L)

114 When (M)Israel went out of Egypt,
The house of Jacob (N)from a people [c]of strange language,
(O)Judah became His sanctuary,
And Israel His dominion.

(P)The sea saw it and fled;
(Q)Jordan turned back.
(R)The mountains skipped like rams,
The little hills like lambs.
(S)What ails you, O sea, that you fled?
O Jordan, that you turned back?
O mountains, that you skipped like rams?
O little hills, like lambs?

Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
At the presence of the God of Jacob,
(T)Who turned the rock into a pool of water,
The flint into a fountain of waters.

The Futility of Idols and the Trustworthiness of God

115 Not (U)unto us, O Lord, not unto us,
But to Your name give glory,
Because of Your mercy,
Because of Your truth.
Why should the [d]Gentiles say,
(V)“So where is their God?”

(W)But our God is in heaven;
He does whatever He pleases.
(X)Their idols are silver and gold,
The work of men’s hands.
They have mouths, but they do not speak;
Eyes they have, but they do not see;
They have ears, but they do not hear;
Noses they have, but they do not smell;
They have hands, but they do not handle;
Feet they have, but they do not walk;
Nor do they mutter through their throat.
(Y)Those who make them are like them;
So is everyone who trusts in them.

(Z)O Israel, trust in the Lord;
(AA)He is their help and their shield.
10 O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.
11 You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.

12 The Lord [e]has been mindful of us;
He will bless us;
He will bless the house of Israel;
He will bless the house of Aaron.
13 (AB)He will bless those who fear the Lord,
Both small and great.

14 May the Lord give you increase more and more,
You and your children.
15 May you be (AC)blessed by the Lord,
(AD)Who made heaven and earth.

16 The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s;
But the earth He has given to the children of men.
17 (AE)The dead do not praise the Lord,
Nor any who go down into silence.
18 (AF)But we will bless the Lord
From this time forth and forevermore.

Praise the Lord!

Thanksgiving for Deliverance from Death

116 I (AG)love the Lord, because He has heard
My voice and my supplications.
Because He has inclined His ear to me,
Therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live.

(AH)The [f]pains of death surrounded me,
And the [g]pangs of Sheol [h]laid hold of me;
I found trouble and sorrow.
Then I called upon the name of the Lord:
“O Lord, I implore You, deliver my soul!”

(AI)Gracious is the Lord, and (AJ)righteous;
Yes, our God is merciful.
The Lord preserves the simple;
I was brought low, and He saved me.
Return to your (AK)rest, O my soul,
For (AL)the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.

(AM)For You have delivered my soul from death,
My eyes from tears,
And my feet from falling.
I will walk before the Lord
(AN)In the land of the living.
10 (AO)I believed, therefore I spoke,
“I am greatly afflicted.”
11 (AP)I said in my haste,
(AQ)“All men are liars.”

12 What shall I render to the Lord
For all His benefits toward me?
13 I will take up the cup of salvation,
And call upon the name of the Lord.
14 (AR)I will pay my vows to the Lord
Now in the presence of all His people.

15 (AS)Precious in the sight of the Lord
Is the death of His saints.

16 O Lord, truly (AT)I am Your servant;
I am Your servant, (AU)the son of Your maidservant;
You have loosed my bonds.
17 I will offer to You (AV)the sacrifice of thanksgiving,
And will call upon the name of the Lord.

18 I will pay my vows to the Lord
Now in the presence of all His people,
19 In the (AW)courts of the Lord’s house,
In the midst of you, O Jerusalem.

[i]Praise the Lord!

Let All Peoples Praise the Lord

117 Praise (AX)the Lord, all you Gentiles!
[j]Laud Him, all you peoples!
For His merciful kindness is great toward us,
And (AY)the truth of the Lord endures forever.

Praise the Lord!

Praise to God for His Everlasting Mercy

118 Oh, (AZ)give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
(BA)For His mercy endures forever.

(BB)Let Israel now say,
“His mercy endures forever.”
Let the house of Aaron now say,
“His mercy endures forever.”
Let those who fear the Lord now say,
“His mercy endures forever.”

(BC)I called on the Lord in distress;
The Lord answered me and (BD)set me in a broad place.
(BE)The Lord is on my side;
I will not fear.
What can man do to me?
(BF)The Lord is for me among those who help me;
Therefore (BG)I shall see my desire on those who hate me.
(BH)It is better to trust in the Lord
Than to put confidence in man.
(BI)It is better to trust in the Lord
Than to put confidence in princes.

10 All nations surrounded me,
But in the name of the Lord I will destroy them.
11 They (BJ)surrounded me,
Yes, they surrounded me;
But in the name of the Lord I will destroy them.
12 They surrounded me (BK)like bees;
They were quenched (BL)like a fire of thorns;
For in the name of the Lord I will [k]destroy them.
13 You pushed me violently, that I might fall,
But the Lord helped me.
14 (BM)The Lord is my strength and song,
And He has become my salvation.

15 The voice of rejoicing and salvation
Is in the tents of the righteous;
The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.
16 (BN)The right hand of the Lord is exalted;
The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.
17 (BO)I shall not die, but live,
And (BP)declare the works of the Lord.
18 The Lord has (BQ)chastened[l] me severely,
But He has not given me over to death.

19 (BR)Open to me the gates of righteousness;
I will go through them,
And I will praise the Lord.
20 (BS)This is the gate of the Lord,
(BT)Through which the righteous shall enter.

21 I will praise You,
For You have (BU)answered me,
And have become my salvation.

22 (BV)The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone.
23 [m]This was the Lord’s doing;
It is marvelous in our eyes.
24 This is the day the Lord has made;
We will rejoice and be glad in it.

25 Save now, I pray, O Lord;
O Lord, I pray, send now prosperity.
26 (BW)Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
We have blessed you from the house of the Lord.
27 God is the Lord,
And He has given us (BX)light;
Bind the sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar.
28 You are my God, and I will praise You;
(BY)You are my God, I will exalt You.

29 Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.
