Jehovah’s glory and man’s dignity.

For the Chief Musician; set to the Gittith. A Psalm of David.

O Jehovah, our Lord, How excellent is thy name in all the earth,
Who hast set thy glory [a]upon the heavens!
Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou established strength,
Because of thine adversaries,
That thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers,
The moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
What is man, that thou art mindful of him?
And the son of man, that thou visitest him?
For thou hast made him but little lower than [b]God,
And crownest him with glory and honor.
Thou makest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands;
Thou hast put all things under his feet:
All sheep and oxen,
Yea, and the beasts of the field,
The birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
Whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.
O Jehovah, our Lord,
How excellent is thy name in all the earth!

  2. Psalm 8:5 Or, the angels. Hebrew Elohim.

For not unto angels did he subject [a]the world to come, whereof we speak. But one hath somewhere testified, saying,

[b]What is man, that thou art mindful of him?
Or the son of man, that thou visitest him?
Thou madest him [c]a little lower than the angels;
Thou crownedst him with glory and honor,
[d]And didst set him over the works of thy hands:
Thou didst put all things in subjection under his feet.

For in that he subjected all things unto him, he left nothing that is not subject to him. But now we see not yet all things subjected to him. But we behold him who hath been made [e]a little lower than the angels, even Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that by the grace of God he should taste of death for every man.
