⁴ So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present,

⁵ hand this man over^(A) to Satan^(B) for the destruction of the flesh,^[a][b] so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.^(C)

¹⁷ But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.^[a](A)

³⁴ and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit.^(A) But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how she can please her husband.

² For anyone who speaks in a tongue^[a](A) does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them;^(B) they utter mysteries^(C) by the Spirit.

¹⁴ For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays,^(A) but my mind is unfruitful.

¹⁵ So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit,^(A) but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing^(B) with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding.

¹⁶ Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an inquirer,^[a] say “Amen”^(A) to your thanksgiving,^(B) since they do not know what you are saying?

⁴⁵ So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”^[a];^(A) the last Adam,^(B) a life-giving spirit.^(C)
