Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness^(A)

4 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted^[a](B) by the devil.^(C)

⁵ Then the devil took him to the holy city^(A) and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.

⁸ Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.

¹¹ Then the devil left him,^(A) and angels came and attended him.^(B)

³⁹ and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest^(A) is the end of the age,^(B) and the harvesters are angels.^(C)

⁴¹ “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me,^(A) you who are cursed, into the eternal fire^(B) prepared for the devil and his angels.^(C)

² where for forty days^(A) he was tempted^[a] by the devil.^(B) He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

³ The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God,^(A) tell this stone to become bread.”

⁵ The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.^(A)

⁹ The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here.
