Exodus 20:3-6

New International Version

³“You shall have no other gods before^[a] me.^(A)

⁴“You shall not make for yourself an image^(B) in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. ⁵You shall not bow down to them or worship^(C) them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,^(D) punishing the children for the sin of the parents^(E) to the third and fourth generation^(F) of those who hate me, ⁶but showing love to a thousand^(G) generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

⁷“‘When any of the Israelites or any foreigner^(C) residing in Israel separate themselves from me and set up idols in their hearts and put a wicked stumbling block^(D) before their faces and then go to a prophet to inquire^(E) of me, I the Lord will answer them myself. ⁸I will set my face against^(F) them and make them an example^(G) and a byword.^(H) I will remove them from my people. Then you will know that I am the Lord.^(I)
