²⁸ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.^(A)

¹² Therefore do not let sin reign^(A) in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. ¹³ Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness,^(B) but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.^{(C) 14} For sin shall no longer be your master,^(D) because you are not under the law,^(E) but under grace.^(F)

¹³ For if you live according to the flesh, you will die;^(A) but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body,^(B) you will live.^(C)

¹⁴ For those who are led by the Spirit of God^(D) are the children of God.^(E)

¹³ You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.”^(A) The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord,^(B) and the Lord for the body. ¹⁴ By his power God raised the Lord from the dead,^(C) and he will raise us also.^{(D) 15} Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself?^(E) Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! ¹⁶ Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.”^{[a](F) 17} But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.^[b](G)

¹⁸ Flee from sexual immorality.^(H) All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.^{(I) 19} Do you not know that your bodies are temples^(J) of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;^{(K) 20} you were bought at a price.^(L) Therefore honor God with your bodies.^(M)

¹⁶ So I say, walk by the Spirit,^(A) and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.^{(B) 17} For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh.^(C) They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever^[a] you want.^{(D) 18} But if you are led by the Spirit,^(E) you are not under the law.^(F)

¹⁹ The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality,^(G) impurity and debauchery; ²⁰ idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions ²¹ and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.^(H) I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.^(I)

³ It is God’s will^(A) that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;^{(B) 4} that each of you should learn to control your own body^[a](C) in a way that is holy and honorable, ⁵ not in passionate lust^(D) like the pagans,^(E) who do not know God;^{(F) 6} and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister.^[b](G) The Lord will punish^(H) all those who commit such sins,^(I) as we told you and warned you before. ⁷ For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.^{(J) 8} Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.^(K)

Living Godly Lives in a Pagan Society

¹¹ Dear friends,^(A) I urge you, as foreigners and exiles,^(B) to abstain from sinful desires,^(C) which wage war against your soul.^(D)

¹⁶ For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh,^(A) the lust of the eyes,^(B) and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.
