  1. Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.”
  2. So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill.
  3. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.
  4. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.”
  5. Then Moses set out with Joshua his aide, and Moses went up on the mountain of God.
  6. When Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting, he said to Moses, “There is the sound of war in the camp.”
  7. The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent.
  8. Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses’ aide since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!”
  9. These are the names of the men Moses sent to explore the land. (Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.)
  10. Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes
  11. Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
  12. Of the men who went to explore the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.
  13. For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness, and not one of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
  14. Joshua to Succeed Moses

    Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain in the Abarim Range and see the land I have given the Israelites.
  15. So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him.
  16. Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly.
  17. not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the Lord wholeheartedly.’
  18. Then Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun and to the family heads of the Israelite tribes.
  19. “These are the names of the men who are to assign the land for you as an inheritance: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun.
  20. But your assistant, Joshua son of Nun, will enter it. Encourage him, because he will lead Israel to inherit it.
  21. Moses Forbidden to Cross the Jordan

    At that time I commanded Joshua: “You have seen with your own eyes all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings. The Lord will do the same to all the kingdoms over there where you are going.
  22. But commission Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, for he will lead this people across and will cause them to inherit the land that you will see.”
  23. Joshua to Succeed Moses

    Then Moses went out and spoke these words to all Israel:
  24. The Lord your God himself will cross over ahead of you. He will destroy these nations before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will cross over ahead of you, as the Lord said.
  25. Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance.
