And he commanded them, saying, (A)“Speak thus to my lord Esau, ‘Thus your servant Jacob says: “I have dwelt with Laban and stayed there until now. (B)I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that (C)I may find favor in your sight.” ’ ”

Then the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau, and (D)he also is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.” So Jacob was greatly afraid and (E)distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two companies. And he said, “If Esau comes to the one company and [a]attacks it, then the other company which is left will escape.”

(F)Then Jacob said, (G)“O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the Lord (H)who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your family, and I will deal well with you’: 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the (I)mercies and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant; for I crossed over this Jordan with (J)my staff, and now I have become two companies. 11 (K)Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and [b]attack me and (L)the mother with the children. 12 For (M)You said, ‘I will surely treat you well, and make your descendants as the (N)sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’ ”

13 So he lodged there that same night, and took what [c]came to his hand as (O)a present for Esau his brother: 14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, 15 thirty milk camels with their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals. 16 Then he delivered them to the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put some distance between successive droves.” 17 And he commanded the first one, saying, “When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, saying, ‘To whom do you belong, and where are you going? Whose are these in front of you?’ 18 then you shall say, ‘They are your servant Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord Esau; and behold, he also is behind us.’ ” 19 So he commanded the second, the third, and all who followed the droves, saying, “In this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him; 20 and also say, ‘Behold, your servant Jacob is behind us.’ ” For he said, “I will (P)appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.” 21 So the present went on over before him, but he himself lodged that night in the camp.

Wrestling with God

22 And he arose that night and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven sons, (Q)and crossed over the ford of Jabbok. 23 He took them, sent them [d]over the brook, and sent over what he had. 24 Then Jacob was left alone; and (R)a Man wrestled with him until the [e]breaking of day. 25 Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He [f]touched the socket of his hip; and (S)the socket of Jacob’s hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him. 26 And (T)He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.”

But he said, (U)“I will not let You go unless You bless me!”

27 So He said to him, “What is your name?”

He said, “Jacob.”

28 And He said, (V)“Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but [g]Israel; for you have (W)struggled with God and (X)with men, and have prevailed.”

29 Then Jacob asked, saying, “Tell me Your name, I pray.”

And He said, (Y)“Why is it that you ask about My name?” And He (Z)blessed him there.

30 So Jacob called the name of the place [h]Peniel: “For (AA)I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” 31 Just as he crossed over [i]Penuel the sun rose on him, and he limped on his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the children of Israel do not eat the muscle that shrank, which is on the hip socket, because He [j]touched the socket of Jacob’s hip in the muscle that shrank.

Jacob and Esau Meet

33 Now Jacob lifted his eyes and looked, and there, (AB)Esau was coming, and with him were four hundred men. So he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two maidservants. And he put the maidservants and their children in front, Leah and her children behind, and Rachel and Joseph last. Then he crossed over before them and (AC)bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

(AD)But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, (AE)and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept. And he lifted his eyes and saw the women and children, and said, “Who are these with you?”

So he said, “The children (AF)whom God has graciously given your servant.” Then the maidservants came near, they and their children, and bowed down. And Leah also came near with her children, and they bowed down. Afterward Joseph and Rachel came near, and they bowed down.

Then Esau said, “What do you mean by (AG)all this company which I met?”

And he said, “These are (AH)to find favor in the sight of my lord.”

But Esau said, “I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself.”

10 And Jacob said, “No, please, if I have now found favor in your sight, then receive my present from my hand, inasmuch as I (AI)have seen your face as though I had seen the face of God, and you were pleased with me. 11 Please, take (AJ)my blessing that is brought to you, because God has dealt (AK)graciously with me, and because I have [k]enough.” (AL)So he urged him, and he took it.

12 Then Esau said, “Let us take our journey; let us go, and I will go before you.”

13 But Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are weak, and the flocks and herds which are nursing are with me. And if the men should drive them hard one day, all the flock will die. 14 Please let my lord go on ahead before his servant. I will lead on slowly at a pace which the livestock that go before me, and the children, [l]are able to endure, until I come to my lord (AM)in Seir.”

15 And Esau said, “Now let me leave with you some of the people who are with me.”

But he said, “What need is there? (AN)Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.” 16 So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir. 17 And Jacob journeyed to (AO)Succoth, built himself a house, and made [m]booths for his livestock. Therefore the name of the place is called [n]Succoth.

Jacob Comes to Canaan

18 Then Jacob came [o]safely to (AP)the city of (AQ)Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan Aram; and he pitched his tent before the city. 19 And (AR)he bought the parcel of [p]land, where he had pitched his tent, from the children of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for one hundred pieces of money. 20 Then he erected an altar there and called it (AS)El[q] Elohe Israel.

The Dinah Incident

34 Now (AT)Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he (AU)took her and lay with her, and violated her. His soul [r]was strongly attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young woman and spoke [s]kindly to the young woman. So Shechem (AV)spoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this young woman as a wife.”

And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter. Now his sons were with his livestock in the field; so Jacob (AW)held[t] his peace until they came. Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him. And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved and very angry, because he (AX)had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter, (AY)a thing which ought not to be done. But Hamor spoke with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife. And make marriages with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to yourselves. 10 So you shall dwell with us, and the land shall be before you. Dwell and trade in it, and acquire possessions for yourselves in it.”

11 Then Shechem said to her father and her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will give. 12 Ask me ever so much (AZ)dowry[u] and gift, and I will give according to what you say to me; but give me the young woman as a wife.”

13 But the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father, and spoke (BA)deceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister. 14 And they said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is (BB)uncircumcised, for (BC)that would be a reproach to us. 15 But on this condition we will consent to you: If you will become as we are, if every male of you is circumcised, 16 then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to us; and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people. 17 But if you will not heed us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and be gone.”

18 And their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son. 19 So the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he delighted in Jacob’s daughter. He was (BD)more honorable than all the household of his father.

20 And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the (BE)gate of their city, and spoke with the men of their city, saying: 21 “These men are at peace with us. Therefore let them dwell in the land and trade in it. For indeed the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters to us as wives, and let us give them our daughters. 22 Only on this condition will the men consent to dwell with us, to be one people: if every male among us is circumcised as they are circumcised. 23 Will not their livestock, their property, and every animal of theirs be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.” 24 And all who went out of the gate of his city heeded Hamor and Shechem his son; every male was circumcised, all who (BF)went out of the gate of his city.

25 Now it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of the sons of Jacob, (BG)Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword and came boldly upon the city and killed all the males. 26 And they (BH)killed Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem’s house, and went out. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because their sister had been defiled. 28 They took their sheep, their oxen, and their donkeys, what was in the city and what was in the field, 29 and all their wealth. All their little ones and their wives they took captive; and they plundered even all that was in the houses.

30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, (BI)“You have (BJ)troubled me (BK)by making me obnoxious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; (BL)and since I am few in number, they will gather themselves together against me and kill me. I shall be destroyed, my household and I.”

31 But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a harlot?”

Jacob’s Return to Bethel

35 Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to (BM)Bethel and dwell there; and make an altar there to God, (BN)who appeared to you (BO)when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.”

And Jacob said to his (BP)household and to all who were with him, “Put away (BQ)the foreign gods that are among you, (BR)purify yourselves, and change your garments. Then let us arise and go up to Bethel; and I will make an altar there to God, (BS)who answered me in the day of my distress (BT)and has been with me in the way which I have gone.” So they gave Jacob all the foreign [v]gods which were in their hands, and the (BU)earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under (BV)the terebinth tree which was by Shechem.

And they journeyed, and (BW)the terror of God was upon the cities that were all around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. So Jacob came to (BX)Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him. And he (BY)built an altar there and called the place [w]El Bethel, because (BZ)there God appeared to him when he fled from the face of his brother.

Now (CA)Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the terebinth tree. So the name of it was called [x]Allon Bachuth.

Then (CB)God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Padan Aram, and (CC)blessed him. 10 And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; (CD)your name shall not be called Jacob anymore, (CE)but Israel shall be your name.” So He called his name Israel. 11 Also God said to him: (CF)“I am God Almighty. (CG)Be fruitful and multiply; (CH)a nation and a company of nations shall proceed from you, and kings shall come from your body. 12 The (CI)land which I gave Abraham and Isaac I give to you; and to your descendants after you I give this land.” 13 Then God (CJ)went[y] up from him in the place where He talked with him. 14 So Jacob (CK)set up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it. 15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, (CL)Bethel.

Death of Rachel

16 Then they journeyed from Bethel. And when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel labored in childbirth, and she had hard labor. 17 Now it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, “Do not fear; (CM)you will have this son also.” 18 And so it was, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name [z]Ben-Oni; but his father called him [aa]Benjamin. 19 So (CN)Rachel died and was buried on the way to (CO)Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). 20 And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, which is the pillar of Rachel’s grave (CP)to this day.

21 Then Israel journeyed and pitched his tent beyond (CQ)the tower of Eder. 22 And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and (CR)lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine; and Israel heard about it.

Jacob’s Twelve Sons

Now the sons of Jacob were twelve: 23 the sons of Leah were (CS)Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, and Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun; 24 the sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin; 25 the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maidservant, were Dan and Naphtali; 26 and the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maidservant, were Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Padan Aram.

Death of Isaac

27 Then Jacob came to his father Isaac at (CT)Mamre, or (CU)Kirjath Arba[ab] (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had dwelt. 28 Now the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years. 29 So Isaac breathed his last and died, and (CV)was [ac]gathered to his people, being old and full of days. And (CW)his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

The Family of Esau(CX)

36 Now this is the genealogy of Esau, (CY)who is Edom. (CZ)Esau took his wives from the daughters of Canaan: Adah the daughter of Elon the (DA)Hittite; (DB)Aholibamah[ad] the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite; and (DC)Basemath, Ishmael’s daughter, sister of Nebajoth. Now (DD)Adah bore Eliphaz to Esau, and Basemath bore Reuel. And [ae]Aholibamah bore Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah. These were the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan.

Then Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the persons of his household, his cattle and all his animals, and all his goods which he had gained in the land of Canaan, and went to a country away from the presence of his brother Jacob. (DE)For their possessions were too great for them to dwell together, and (DF)the land where they were strangers could not support them because of their livestock. So Esau dwelt in (DG)Mount Seir. (DH)Esau is Edom.

And this is the genealogy of Esau the father of the Edomites in Mount Seir. 10 These were the names of Esau’s sons: (DI)Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, and Reuel the son of Basemath the wife of Esau. 11 And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, [af]Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.

12 Now Timna was the concubine of Eliphaz, Esau’s son, and she bore (DJ)Amalek to Eliphaz. These were the sons of Adah, Esau’s wife.

13 These were the sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These were the sons of Basemath, Esau’s wife.

14 These were the sons of [ag]Aholibamah, Esau’s wife, the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon. And she bore to Esau: Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah.

The Chiefs of Edom

15 These were the chiefs of the sons of Esau. The sons of Eliphaz, the firstborn son of Esau, were Chief Teman, Chief Omar, Chief Zepho, Chief Kenaz, 16 [ah]Chief Korah, Chief Gatam, and Chief Amalek. These were the chiefs of Eliphaz in the land of Edom. They were the sons of Adah.

17 These were the sons of Reuel, Esau’s son: Chief Nahath, Chief Zerah, Chief Shammah, and Chief Mizzah. These were the chiefs of Reuel in the land of Edom. These were the sons of Basemath, Esau’s wife.

18 And these were the sons of [ai]Aholibamah, Esau’s wife: Chief Jeush, Chief Jaalam, and Chief Korah. These were the chiefs who descended from Aholibamah, Esau’s wife, the daughter of Anah. 19 These were the sons of Esau, who is Edom, and these were their chiefs.

The Sons of Seir

20 (DK)These were the sons of Seir (DL)the Horite who inhabited the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, 21 Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These were the chiefs of the Horites, the sons of Seir, in the land of Edom.

22 And the sons of Lotan were Hori and [aj]Hemam. Lotan’s sister was Timna.

23 These were the sons of Shobal: [ak]Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, [al]Shepho, and Onam.

24 These were the sons of Zibeon: both Ajah and Anah. This was the Anah who found the [am]water in the wilderness as he pastured (DM)the donkeys of his father Zibeon. 25 These were the children of Anah: Dishon and [an]Aholibamah the daughter of Anah.

26 These were the sons of [ao]Dishon: [ap]Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran. 27 These were the sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and [aq]Akan. 28 These were the sons of Dishan: (DN)Uz and Aran.

29 These were the chiefs of the Horites: Chief Lotan, Chief Shobal, Chief Zibeon, Chief Anah, 30 Chief Dishon, Chief Ezer, and Chief Dishan. These were the chiefs of the Horites, according to their chiefs in the land of Seir.

The Kings of Edom

31 (DO)Now these were the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the children of Israel: 32 Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom, and the name of his city was Dinhabah. 33 And when Bela died, Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place. 34 When Jobab died, Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his place. 35 And when Husham died, Hadad the son of Bedad, who attacked Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his place. And the name of his city was Avith. 36 When Hadad died, Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place. 37 And when Samlah died, Saul of (DP)Rehoboth-by-the-River reigned in his place. 38 When Saul died, Baal-Hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his place. 39 And when Baal-Hanan the son of Achbor died, [ar]Hadar reigned in his place; and the name of his city was [as]Pau. His wife’s name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab.

The Chiefs of Esau

40 And these were the names of the chiefs of Esau, according to their families and their places, by their names: Chief Timnah, Chief [at]Alvah, Chief Jetheth, 41 Chief [au]Aholibamah, Chief Elah, Chief Pinon, 42 Chief Kenaz, Chief Teman, Chief Mibzar, 43 Chief Magdiel, and Chief Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom, according to their dwelling places in the land of their possession. Esau was the father of [av]the Edomites.

My people are bent on (A)backsliding from Me.
Though [a]they call [b]to the Most High,
None at all exalt Him.

“How(B) can I give you up, Ephraim?
How can I hand you over, Israel?
How can I make you like (C)Admah?
How can I set you like Zeboiim?
My heart [c]churns within Me;
My sympathy is stirred.
I will not execute the fierceness of My anger;
I will not again destroy Ephraim.
(D)For I am God, and not man,
The Holy One in your midst;
And I will not [d]come with terror.

10 “They shall walk after the Lord.
(E)He will roar like a lion.
When He roars,
Then His sons shall come trembling from the west;
11 They shall come trembling like a bird from Egypt,
(F)Like a dove from the land of Assyria.
(G)And I will let them dwell in their houses,”
Says the Lord.

God’s Charge Against Ephraim

12 “Ephraim has encircled Me with lies,
And the house of Israel with deceit;
But Judah still walks with God,
Even with the [e]Holy One who is faithful.

Ephraim’s Sins Rebuked by God

12 “Ephraim (H)feeds on the wind,
And pursues the east wind;
He daily increases lies and [f]desolation.
(I)Also they make a [g]covenant with the Assyrians,
And (J)oil is carried to Egypt.

“The(K) Lord also brings a [h]charge against Judah,
And will punish Jacob according to his ways;
According to his deeds He will recompense him.
He took his brother (L)by the heel in the womb,
And in his strength he (M)struggled with God.
Yes, he struggled with the Angel and prevailed;
He wept, and sought favor from Him.
He found Him in (N)Bethel,
And there He spoke to us—
That is, the Lord God of hosts.
The Lord is His (O)memorable name.
(P)So you, by the help of your God, return;
Observe mercy and justice,
And wait on your God continually.

“A cunning [i]Canaanite!
(Q)Deceitful scales are in his hand;
He loves to oppress.
And Ephraim said,
(R)‘Surely I have become rich,
I have found wealth for myself;
In all my labors
They shall find in me no iniquity that is sin.’

“But I am the Lord your God,
Ever since the land of Egypt;
(S)I will again make you dwell in tents,
As in the days of the appointed feast.
10 (T)I have also spoken by the prophets,
And have multiplied visions;
I have given [j]symbols [k]through the witness of the prophets.”

11 Though (U)Gilead has idols—
Surely they are [l]vanity—
Though they sacrifice bulls in (V)Gilgal,
Indeed their altars shall be heaps in the furrows of the field.

12 Jacob (W)fled to the country of Syria;
(X)Israel served for a spouse,
And for a wife he tended sheep.

The Coming Judgment on Edom

The vision of Obadiah.

Thus says the Lord God (A)concerning Edom
(B)(We have heard a report from the Lord,
And a messenger has been sent among the nations, saying,
“Arise, and let us rise up against her for battle”):

“Behold, I will make you small among the nations;
You shall be greatly despised.
The (C)pride of your heart has deceived you,
You who dwell in the clefts of the rock,
Whose habitation is high;
(D)You who say in your heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’
(E)Though you ascend as high as the eagle,
And though you (F)set your nest among the stars,
From there I will bring you down,” says the Lord.

“If (G)thieves had come to you,
If robbers by night—
Oh, how you will be cut off!—
Would they not have stolen till they had enough?
If grape-gatherers had come to you,
(H)Would they not have left some gleanings?

“Oh, how Esau shall be searched out!
How his hidden treasures shall be sought after!
All the men in your confederacy
Shall force you to the border;
(I)The men at peace with you
Shall deceive you and prevail against you.
Those who eat your bread shall lay a [a]trap for you.
(J)No[b] one is aware of it.

“Will(K) I not in that day,” says the Lord,
“Even destroy the wise men from Edom,
And understanding from the mountains of Esau?
Then your (L)mighty men, O (M)Teman, shall be dismayed,
To the end that everyone from the mountains of Esau

Edom Mistreated His Brother

10 “For (N)violence against your brother Jacob,
Shame shall cover you,
And (O)you shall be cut off forever.
11 In the day that you (P)stood on the other side—
In the day that strangers carried captive his forces,
When foreigners entered his gates
And (Q)cast lots for Jerusalem—
Even you were as one of them.

12 “But you should not have (R)gazed[c] on the day of your brother
[d]In the day of his captivity;
Nor should you have (S)rejoiced over the children of Judah
In the day of their destruction;
Nor should you have spoken proudly
In the day of distress.
13 You should not have entered the gate of My people
In the day of their calamity.
Indeed, you should not have [e]gazed on their affliction
In the day of their calamity,
Nor laid hands on their substance
In the day of their calamity.
14 You should not have stood at the crossroads
To cut off those among them who escaped;
Nor should you have [f]delivered up those among them who remained
In the day of distress.

15 “For(T) the day of the Lord upon all the nations is near;
(U)As you have done, it shall be done to you;
Your [g]reprisal shall return upon your own head.
16 (V)For as you drank on My holy mountain,
So shall all the nations drink continually;
Yes, they shall drink, and swallow,
And they shall be as though they had never been.

Israel’s Final Triumph

17 “But on Mount Zion there (W)shall be [h]deliverance,
And there shall be holiness;
The house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.
18 The house of Jacob shall be a fire,
And the house of Joseph (X)a flame;
But the house of Esau shall be stubble;
They shall kindle them and devour them,
And no survivor shall remain of the house of Esau,”
For the Lord has spoken.

19 The [i]South (Y)shall possess the mountains of Esau,
(Z)And the Lowland shall possess Philistia.
They shall possess the fields of Ephraim
And the fields of Samaria.
Benjamin shall possess Gilead.
20 And the captives of this host of the children of Israel
Shall possess the land of the Canaanites
As (AA)far as Zarephath.
The captives of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad
(AB)Shall possess the cities of the [j]South.
21 Then (AC)saviors[k] shall come to Mount Zion
To judge the mountains of Esau,
And the (AD)kingdom shall be the Lord’s.

11 By faith (A)Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and (B)she[a] bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him (C)faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore from one man, and him as good as (D)dead, were born as many as the (E)stars of the sky in multitude—innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.

The Heavenly Hope

13 These all died in faith, (F)not having received the (G)promises, but (H)having seen them afar off [b]were assured of them, embraced them and (I)confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For those who say such things (J)declare plainly that they seek a homeland. 15 And truly if they had called to mind (K)that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed (L)to be called their God, for He has (M)prepared a city for them.

The Faith of the Patriarchs(N)

17 By faith Abraham, (O)when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 [c]of whom it was said, (P)“In Isaac your seed shall be called,” 19 concluding that God (Q)was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense.

20 By faith (R)Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.

The Prayer in the Garden(A)

36 (B)Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.” 37 And He took with Him Peter and (C)the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. 38 Then He said to them, (D)“My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.”

39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and (E)prayed, saying, (F)“O My Father, if it is possible, (G)let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, (H)not as I will, but as You will.

40 Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? 41 (I)Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. (J)The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, “O My Father, [a]if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.” 43 And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy.

44 So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. 45 Then He came to His disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour [b]is at hand, and the Son of Man is being (K)betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”
