Matthew 15:2-10
English Standard Version
2 (A)“Why do your disciples break (B)the tradition of the elders? (C)For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” 3 He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God commanded, (D)‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, (E)‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 5 But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,”[a] 6 he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have (F)made void the word[b] of God. 7 (G)You hypocrites! Matthew 15:2-10
New International Version
2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”(A)
3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’[a](B) and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[b](C) 5 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ 6 they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:
8 “‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
9 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.(D)’[c](E)”
10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand.
