21 Men Satan stod op imot Israel og egget David til å telle Israel.
2 Da sa David til Joab og folkets høvedsmenn: Gå avsted og tell Israel fra Be'erseba like til Dan og kom så til mig med melding, så jeg kan få vite tallet på dem.
3 Da sa Joab: Herren legge hundre ganger så mange til sitt folk som de er nu! Er de ikke, herre konge, alle sammen min herres tjenere? Hvorfor krever min herre dette? Hvorfor skal det bli til skyld for Israel?
4 Men kongen holdt fast ved sin befaling og gav ikke efter for Joab. Så tok da Joab ut og drog omkring i hele Israel og kom så tilbake til Jerusalem.
5 Og Joab opgav for David det tall som var utkommet ved folkemønstringen. I hele Israel var det elleve hundre tusen mann som kunde dra sverd, og i Juda fire hundre og sytti tusen.
6 Men Levi og Benjamin hadde han ikke mønstret sammen med de andre; for kongens ord var en vederstyggelighet for Joab.
7 Det som var skjedd, var ondt i Guds øine, og han slo Israel.
8 Da sa David til Gud: Jeg har syndet storlig ved å gjøre dette; men tilgi nu din tjeners misgjerning, for jeg har båret mig meget uforstandig at.
9 Men Herren talte til Gad, Davids seer, og sa:
10 Gå og tal til David og si: Så sier Herren: Tre ting forelegger jeg dig; velg en av dem, sa vil jeg gjøre så mot dig!
11 Da kom Gad til David og sa til ham: Så sier Herren: Velg nu
12 enten hungersnød i tre år eller å ligge under for dine motstandere i tre måneder, så du ikke kan undfly dine fienders sverd, eller at Herrens sverd og pest skal komme over landet i tre dager, og Herrens engel skal volde ødeleggelse i hele Israels landemerke! Tenk nu efter hvad jeg skal svare ham som har sendt mig!
13 David sa til Gad: Jeg er i stor angst; la mig da helst falle i Herrens hånd! For hans barmhjertighet er stor, men i menneskers hånd vil jeg nødig falle.
14 Så lot Herren det komme en pest i Israel, og det falt sytti tusen mann av Israel.
15 Og Gud sendte en engel til Jerusalem for å ødelegge det. Men da han holdt på med å ødelegge, så Herren det, og han angret det onde og sa til engelen som gjorde ødeleggelse: Det er nok; dra nu din hånd tilbake! Herrens engel stod da ved jebusitten Ornans treskeplass.
16 Som nu David så op, fikk han se Herrens engel, som stod mellem jorden og himmelen med draget sverd i sin hånd og rakte det ut mot Jerusalem. Da falt David og de eldste ned på sitt ansikt, klædd i sekk.
17 Og David sa til Gud: Var det ikke jeg som bød at folket skulde telles? Det er jeg som har syndet og gjort ille; men denne min hjord, hvad har de gjort? Herre min Gud, la heller din hånd komme over mig og over min fars hus, men ikke over ditt folk, så det blir hjemsøkt!
18 Da bød Herrens engel Gad å si til David at han skulde gå op og reise et alter for Herren på jebusitten Ornans treskeplass.
19 Så gikk David dit op efter det ord som Gad hadde talt i Herrens navn.
20 Da nu Ornan vendte sig om, fikk han se engelen, og hans fire sønner, som var med ham, skjulte sig; Ornan holdt just på med å treske hvete.
21 Da David kom til Ornan, så Ornan ut og fikk se David; så gikk han ut av treskeplassen og kastet sig ned for David med ansiktet mot orden.
22 Og David sa til Ornan: La mig få det sted hvor du har din treskeplass, så jeg kan bygge et alter for Herren der! La mig få det for dets fulle pris, forat hjemsøkelsen kan stanse og vike fra folket!
23 Da sa Ornan til David: Ta det bare! Min herre kongen må gjøre hvad han finner for godt! Her gir jeg dig oksene til brennofferne og treskesledene til ved og hveten til matofferet; alt sammen gir jeg som gave.
24 Men kong David svarte: Nei, jeg vil kjøpe det for full pris; jeg vil ikke ta til Herren det som ditt er, og ofre brennoffere som jeg har fått for intet.
25 Så gav David Ornan for stedet seks hundre sekel gull efter vekt.
26 Og David bygget der et alter for Herren og ofret brennoffere og takkoffere; og han ropte til Herren, og han svarte ham med ild fra himmelen på brennoffer-alteret.
27 Og Herren bød engelen at han skulde stikke sitt sverd i skjeden igjen.
28 Da David så at Herren hadde bønnhørt ham på jebusitten Ornans treskeplass, så ofret han der på den tid.
29 Herrens tabernakel, som Moses hadde latt gjøre i ørkenen, og brennoffer-alteret stod dengang på haugen i Gibeon;
30 men David torde ikke gå ditt for å søke Gud; så forferdet var han for Herrens engels sverd.
22 Og David sa: Her skal Herren Guds hus stå, og her skal brennofferalteret for Israel være.
2 Og David bød at de fremmede som bodde i Israels land, skulde kalles sammen, og han satte stenhuggere til å hugge til stenene som Guds hus skulde bygges av.
3 Og David samlet jern i mengde til nagler i portdørene og til kramper og en slik mengde kobber at det ikke kunde veies,
4 og så meget sedertre at det ikke var tall på det; for sidonierne og tyrierne førte sedertre i mengde til David.
5 For David tenkte: Min sønn Salomo er ung og vek, og huset som skal bygges for Herren, må gjøres overmåte stort, så det kan være til pris og ære for ham i alle land; jeg vil derfor samle forråd for ham! Så samlet David forråd i mengde, før han døde.
6 Og han kalte sin sønn Salomo til sig og bød ham bygge et hus for Herren, Israels Gud.
7 Og David sa til sin sønn Salomo: Jeg hadde i sinne å bygge et hus for Herrens, min Guds navn.
8 Men Herrens ord kom til mig, og det lød så: Du har utøst meget blod og ført store kriger; du skal ikke bygge et hus for mitt navn, for du har utøst meget blod på jorden for mitt åsyn.
9 Men du skal få en sønn; han skal være en fredens mann, og jeg vil la ham få fred for alle sine fiender rundt omkring; for Salomo[a] skal være hans navn, og jeg vil la Israel ha fred og ro i hans dager.
10 Han skal bygge et hus for mitt navn, og han skal være min sønn, og jeg skal være hans far, og jeg skal trygge hans kongetrone over Israel for all tid.
11 Så være nu Herren med dig, min sønn, og vær lykkelig og bygg Herrens, din Guds hus, således som han har lovt om dig!
12 Bare Herren vil gi dig visdom og forstand og sette dig over Israel, og du må holde Herrens, din Guds lov.
13 Da skal du ha lykke med dig, når du akter vel på å gjøre efter de bud og lover som Herren bød Moses å pålegge Israel; vær frimodig og sterk, frykt ikke og reddes ikke!
14 Her har jeg med megen møie samlet hundre tusen talenter gull og tusen ganger tusen talenter sølv til Herrens hus, dessuten mere kobber og jern enn at det kan veies; så meget er det; tre og sten har jeg og samlet, og mere kan du selv legge til.
15 Arbeidere har du også i mengde, stenhuggere og murere og tømmermenn og dessuten alle slags folk som er kyndige i alle andre slags arbeid.
16 Av gull, sølv, kobber og jern er det så meget at det ikke er tall på det. Så ta da fatt på verket, og Herren være med dig!
17 Og David bød alle Israels høvdinger å hjelpe Salomo, hans sønn, og sa:
18 Herren eders Gud er jo med eder og har gitt eder ro på alle kanter. For han har gitt landets innbyggere i min hånd, og landet er lagt under Herren og hans folk.
19 Vend nu eders hjerte og sjel til å søke Herren eders Gud, og gjør eder rede og bygg Gud Herrens helligdom, så I kan føre Herrens pakts-ark og Guds hellige kar inn i det hus som skal bygges for Herrens navn!

David Counts the Fighting Men(A)
21 Satan(B) rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census(C) of Israel. 2 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, “Go and count(D) the Israelites from Beersheba to Dan. Then report back to me so that I may know how many there are.”
3 But Joab replied, “May the Lord multiply his troops a hundred times over.(E) My lord the king, are they not all my lord’s subjects? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?”
4 The king’s word, however, overruled Joab; so Joab left and went throughout Israel and then came back to Jerusalem. 5 Joab reported the number of the fighting men to David: In all Israel(F) there were one million one hundred thousand men who could handle a sword, including four hundred and seventy thousand in Judah.
6 But Joab did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, because the king’s command was repulsive to him. 7 This command was also evil in the sight of God; so he punished Israel.
8 Then David said to God, “I have sinned greatly by doing this. Now, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.”
9 The Lord said to Gad,(G) David’s seer,(H) 10 “Go and tell David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.’”
11 So Gad went to David and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Take your choice: 12 three years of famine,(I) three months of being swept away[a] before your enemies, with their swords overtaking you, or three days of the sword(J) of the Lord(K)—days of plague in the land, with the angel of the Lord ravaging every part of Israel.’ Now then, decide how I should answer the one who sent me.”
13 David said to Gad, “I am in deep distress. Let me fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy(L) is very great; but do not let me fall into human hands.”
14 So the Lord sent a plague on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell dead.(M) 15 And God sent an angel(N) to destroy Jerusalem.(O) But as the angel was doing so, the Lord saw it and relented(P) concerning the disaster and said to the angel who was destroying(Q) the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand.” The angel of the Lord was then standing at the threshing floor of Araunah[b] the Jebusite.
16 David looked up and saw the angel of the Lord standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand extended over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell facedown.(R)
17 David said to God, “Was it not I who ordered the fighting men to be counted? I, the shepherd,[c] have sinned and done wrong. These are but sheep.(S) What have they done? Lord my God, let your hand fall on me and my family,(T) but do not let this plague remain on your people.”
David Builds an Altar
18 Then the angel of the Lord ordered Gad to tell David to go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor(U) of Araunah the Jebusite. 19 So David went up in obedience to the word that Gad had spoken in the name of the Lord.
20 While Araunah was threshing wheat,(V) he turned and saw the angel; his four sons who were with him hid themselves. 21 Then David approached, and when Araunah looked and saw him, he left the threshing floor and bowed down before David with his face to the ground.
22 David said to him, “Let me have the site of your threshing floor so I can build an altar to the Lord, that the plague on the people may be stopped. Sell it to me at the full price.”
23 Araunah said to David, “Take it! Let my lord the king do whatever pleases him. Look, I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering. I will give all this.”
24 But King David replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying the full price. I will not take for the Lord what is yours, or sacrifice a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”
25 So David paid Araunah six hundred shekels[d] of gold for the site. 26 David built an altar to the Lord there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He called on the Lord, and the Lord answered him with fire(W) from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.
27 Then the Lord spoke to the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath. 28 At that time, when David saw that the Lord had answered him on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite, he offered sacrifices there. 29 The tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses had made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were at that time on the high place at Gibeon.(X) 30 But David could not go before it to inquire of God, because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the Lord.
22 Then David said, “The house of the Lord God(Y) is to be here, and also the altar of burnt offering for Israel.”
Preparations for the Temple
2 So David gave orders to assemble the foreigners(Z) residing in Israel, and from among them he appointed stonecutters(AA) to prepare dressed stone for building the house of God. 3 He provided a large amount of iron to make nails for the doors of the gateways and for the fittings, and more bronze than could be weighed.(AB) 4 He also provided more cedar logs(AC) than could be counted, for the Sidonians and Tyrians had brought large numbers of them to David.
5 David said, “My son Solomon is young(AD) and inexperienced, and the house to be built for the Lord should be of great magnificence and fame and splendor(AE) in the sight of all the nations. Therefore I will make preparations for it.” So David made extensive preparations before his death.
6 Then he called for his son Solomon and charged him to build(AF) a house for the Lord, the God of Israel. 7 David said to Solomon: “My son, I had it in my heart(AG) to build(AH) a house for the Name(AI) of the Lord my God. 8 But this word of the Lord came to me: ‘You have shed much blood and have fought many wars.(AJ) You are not to build a house for my Name,(AK) because you have shed much blood on the earth in my sight. 9 But you will have a son who will be a man of peace(AL) and rest,(AM) and I will give him rest from all his enemies on every side. His name will be Solomon,[e](AN) and I will grant Israel peace and quiet(AO) during his reign. 10 He is the one who will build a house for my Name.(AP) He will be my son,(AQ) and I will be his father. And I will establish(AR) the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.’(AS)
11 “Now, my son, the Lord be with(AT) you, and may you have success and build the house of the Lord your God, as he said you would. 12 May the Lord give you discretion and understanding(AU) when he puts you in command over Israel, so that you may keep the law of the Lord your God. 13 Then you will have success(AV) if you are careful to observe the decrees and laws(AW) that the Lord gave Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous.(AX) Do not be afraid or discouraged.
14 “I have taken great pains to provide for the temple of the Lord a hundred thousand talents[f] of gold, a million talents[g] of silver, quantities of bronze and iron too great to be weighed, and wood and stone. And you may add to them.(AY) 15 You have many workers: stonecutters, masons and carpenters,(AZ) as well as those skilled in every kind of work 16 in gold and silver, bronze and iron—craftsmen(BA) beyond number. Now begin the work, and the Lord be with you.”
17 Then David ordered(BB) all the leaders of Israel to help his son Solomon. 18 He said to them, “Is not the Lord your God with you? And has he not granted you rest(BC) on every side?(BD) For he has given the inhabitants of the land into my hands, and the land is subject to the Lord and to his people. 19 Now devote your heart and soul to seeking the Lord your God.(BE) Begin to build the sanctuary of the Lord God, so that you may bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord and the sacred articles belonging to God into the temple that will be built for the Name of the Lord.”
