Divisions of the Gatekeepers

26 For the divisions of the gatekeepers there were of the Korahites, [a]Meshelemiah the son of Kore, of the sons of [b]Asaph. Meshelemiah had sons: Zechariah the firstborn, Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth, Elam the fifth, Johanan the sixth, and Eliehoenai the seventh. (A)Obed-edom had sons: Shemaiah the firstborn, Jehozabad the second, Joah the third, Sacar the fourth, Nethanel the fifth, Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh, and Peullethai the eighth; God had indeed blessed him. Also to his son Shemaiah sons were born who ruled over the house of their father, for they were valiant mighty men. The sons of Shemaiah were Othni, Rephael, Obed, and Elzabad, whose brothers, Elihu and Semachiah, were valiant men. All these were of the sons of Obed-edom; they and their sons and relatives were able men with strength for the service, sixty-two from Obed-edom. Meshelemiah had sons and relatives, eighteen valiant men. 10 Also (B)Hosah, one of the sons of Merari had sons: Shimri the first (although he was not the firstborn, his father made him first), 11 Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, and Zechariah the fourth; the sons and relatives of Hosah were thirteen in all.

12 To these divisions of the gatekeepers, to the chief men, were given duties like their relatives, to serve in the house of the Lord. 13 (C)They cast lots, the small and the great alike, according to their fathers’ households, for every gate. 14 The lot to the east fell to [c]Shelemiah. Then they cast lots for his son Zechariah, a counselor with insight, and his lot came out to the north. 15 For Obed-edom it fell to the south, and to his sons went the storehouse. 16 For Shuppim and Hosah it was to the west, by the gate of Shallecheth, on the ascending highway. Guard corresponded to guard. 17 On the east there were six Levites, on the north four daily, on the south four daily, and at the storehouse two by two. 18 At the [d](D)annex on the west there were four at the highway and two at the annex. 19 These were the divisions of the gatekeepers of the sons of Korah and of the sons of Merari.

Keepers of the Treasure

20 [e]The Levites, their relatives, were in (E)charge of the treasures of the house of God and of the treasures of the dedicated gifts. 21 The sons of Ladan, the sons of the Gershonites belonging to Ladan, namely, the Jehielites, were the heads of the fathers’ households, belonging to Ladan the Gershonite.

22 The sons of Jehieli, Zetham, and his brother Joel, were in charge of the treasures of the house of the Lord. 23 As for the Amramites, the Izharites, the Hebronites, and the Uzzielites, 24 Shebuel the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, was officer over the treasures. 25 His relatives by Eliezer were Rehabiah his son, Jeshaiah his son, Joram his son, Zichri his son, and Shelomoth his son. 26 This Shelomoth and his relatives were in charge of all the treasures of the dedicated gifts (F)which King David and the heads of the fathers’ households, the commanders of thousands and hundreds, and the commanders of the army, had dedicated. 27 They dedicated [f]part of the spoils won in battles to repair the house of the Lord. 28 And all that Samuel the seer had dedicated, and Saul the son of Kish, Abner the son of Ner, and Joab the son of Zeruiah, everyone who had dedicated anything, all of this was [g]under the care of [h]Shelomoth and his relatives.

Outside Duties

29 As for the Izharites, Chenaniah and his sons (G)were assigned to outside duties for Israel, as (H)officers and judges. 30 As for the Hebronites, (I)Hashabiah and his relatives, 1,700 capable men, [i]were responsible for the affairs of Israel [j]west of the Jordan, for all the work of the Lord and the service of the king. 31 As for the Hebronites, (J)Jerijah the chief [k](these Hebronites were sought out according to their genealogies and fathers’ households, in the fortieth year of David’s reign, and men of outstanding capability were found among them at (K)Jazer of Gilead) 32 and his relatives, capable men, numbered 2,700, heads of fathers’ households. And King David appointed them as overseers of the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of the Manassites (L)concerning [l]all the affairs of God and of the king.

Commanders of the Army

27 Now this is the number of the sons of Israel, the heads of fathers’ households, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and their officers who served the king in all the affairs of the divisions which came in and went out month by month throughout the months of the year, each division numbering twenty-four thousand:

Jashobeam the son of Zabdiel [m](M)was in charge of the first division for the first month; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. He was from the sons of Perez, and was chief of all the commanders of the army for the first month. Dodai the Ahohite and his division was in charge of the division for the second month, Mikloth being the chief officer; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. The third commander of the army for the third month was Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada the priest, as chief; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. This Benaiah was the mighty man of the thirty, and was in charge of thirty; and over his division was his son Ammizabad. The fourth, for the fourth month was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. The fifth, for the fifth month was the commander Shamhuth the Izrahite; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. The sixth, for the sixth month was Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 10 The seventh, for the seventh month was Helez the Pelonite of the sons of Ephraim; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 11 The eighth, for the eighth month was Sibbecai the Hushathite of the Zerahites; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 12 The ninth, for the ninth month was Abiezer the Anathothite of the Benjaminites; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 13 The tenth, for the tenth month was Maharai the Netophathite of the Zerahites; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 14 The eleventh, for the eleventh month was Benaiah the Pirathonite of the sons of Ephraim; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 15 The twelfth, for the twelfth month was Heldai the Netophathite of Othniel; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

Chief Officers of the Tribes

16 Now in charge of the tribes of Israel: chief officer for the Reubenites was Eliezer the son of Zichri; for the Simeonites, Shephatiah the son of Maacah; 17 for Levi, Hashabiah the son of Kemuel; for Aaron, Zadok; 18 for Judah, Elihu, one of David’s brothers; for Issachar, Omri the son of Michael; 19 for Zebulun, Ishmaiah the son of Obadiah; for Naphtali, Jeremoth the son of Azriel; 20 for the sons of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Azaziah; for the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joel the son of Pedaiah; 21 for the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo the son of Zechariah; for Benjamin, Jaasiel the son of Abner; 22 for Dan, Azarel the son of Jeroham. (N)These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel. 23 But David did not [n]count those twenty years of age and under, (O)because the Lord had said He would multiply Israel (P)as the stars of heaven. 24 Joab the son of Zeruiah had begun to count them, but did not finish; and because of (Q)this, wrath came upon Israel, and the number was not included in the account of the chronicles of King David.

Various Overseers

25 Now Azmaveth the son of Adiel was responsible for the king’s storehouses. And Jonathan the son of Uzziah was responsible for the storehouses in the country, the cities, the villages, and the towers. 26 Ezri the son of Chelub was responsible for the [o]agricultural workers who tilled the soil. 27 Shimei the Ramathite was responsible for the vineyards; and Zabdi the Shiphmite was responsible for the [p]produce of the vineyards stored in the wine cellars. 28 Baal-hanan the Gederite was responsible for the olive and (R)sycamore trees in the [q]Shephelah; and Joash was responsible for the stores of oil. 29 Shitrai the Sharonite was responsible for the cattle which were grazing in (S)Sharon; and Shaphat the son of Adlai was responsible for the cattle in the valleys. 30 Obil the Ishmaelite was responsible for the camels; and Jehdeiah the Meronothite was responsible for the donkeys. 31 Jaziz the (T)Hagrite was responsible for the flocks. All these were [r]overseers of the property which belonged to King David.

Counselors

32 Also Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a man of understanding, and a scribe; and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni [s]tutored the king’s sons. 33 (U)Ahithophel was counselor to the king; and (V)Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend. 34 Jehoiada the son of (W)Benaiah, and (X)Abiathar [t]succeeded Ahithophel; and Joab was the (Y)commander of the king’s army.

David’s Address about the Temple

28 Now (Z)David assembled at Jerusalem all the officials of Israel, the leaders of the tribes, and the commanders of the divisions that served the king, the commanders of thousands, and the commanders of hundreds, and the overseers of all the property and livestock belonging to the king and his sons, with the officials and (AA)the mighty men, all the valiant warriors. Then King David rose to his feet and said, “Listen to me, my brothers and my people; [u]I (AB)had intended to build a [v]permanent home for the ark of the covenant of the Lord and for (AC)the footstool of our God. So I had made preparations to build it. But God said to me, ‘(AD)You shall not build a house for My name, because you are a man of war and have shed blood.’ Yet, the Lord, the God of Israel, (AE)chose me from all the household of my father to be king over Israel (AF)forever. For (AG)He has chosen Judah to be a leader; and (AH)in the house of Judah, my father’s house, and among the sons of my father He took pleasure in me to make me king over all Israel. (AI)Of all my sons (for the Lord has given me many sons), (AJ)He has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel. He said to me, ‘Your son (AK)Solomon is the one who shall build My house and My courtyards; for I have chosen him to be a son to Me, and I will be a Father to him. I will establish his kingdom forever (AL)if he resolutely performs My commandments and My ordinances, as [w]is done now.’ So now, in the sight of all Israel, the assembly of the Lord, and in the [x]presence of our God, keep and seek after all the commandments of the Lord your God so that you may possess the good land and leave it as an inheritance to your sons after you forever.

“As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and (AM)serve Him wholeheartedly and with a willing [y]mind; (AN)for the Lord searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts. (AO)If you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever. 10 Consider now, for the Lord has chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary; (AP)be courageous and act.”

11 Then David gave to his son Solomon (AQ)the plan of (AR)the porch of the temple, its buildings, its storehouses, its upper rooms, its inner rooms, and (AS)the room for the [z]atoning cover; 12 and the plan of all that he had in [aa]mind, for the courtyards of the house of the Lord, and for all the surrounding rooms, for (AT)the storehouses of the house of God and for the storehouses of the dedicated things; 13 also for (AU)the divisions of the priests and (AV)the Levites and for all the work of the service of the house of the Lord and for all the utensils of service in the house of the Lord; 14 for the golden utensils, by weight of gold for all utensils for every service; for all the silver utensils, by weight of silver for all utensils for every service; 15 and the weight of gold for the (AW)golden lampstands and their golden lamps, with the weight of each lampstand and its lamps; and the weight of silver for the silver lampstands, with the weight of each lampstand and its lamps according to the use of each lampstand; 16 and the gold by weight for the tables of the showbread, for each table; and silver for the silver tables; 17 and the forks, the basins, and the pitchers of pure gold; and for the golden bowls with the weight for each bowl; and for the silver bowls with the weight for each bowl; 18 and for (AX)the altar of incense, refined gold by weight; and gold for the model of the chariot, and (AY)the cherubim that spread out their wings and covered the ark of the covenant of the Lord.

19 “All this,” said David, “the Lord made me understand in writing by His hand upon me, (AZ)all the [ab]details of this pattern.”

20 Then David said to his son Solomon, “(BA)Be strong and courageous, and act; do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. (BB)He will not fail you nor forsake you until all the work for the service of the house of the Lord is finished. 21 Now behold, (BC)there are the divisions of the priests and the Levites for all the service of the house of God, and (BD)every willing man of any skill will be with you in all the work for all kinds of service. The officials also and all the people will be entirely at your command.”

Offerings for the Temple

29 Then King David said to the entire assembly, “My son Solomon, whom alone God has chosen, (BE)is still young and inexperienced, and the work is great; for (BF)the [ac]temple is not for mankind, but for the Lord God. Now (BG)with all my ability I have provided for the house of my God the gold for the things of gold, the silver for the things of silver, the bronze for the things of bronze, the iron for the things of iron, wood for the things of wood, onyx stones and inlaid stones, stones of antimony and stones of various colors, and all kinds of precious stones and alabaster in abundance. In addition, in my delight in the house of my God, the treasure I have of gold and silver, I give to the house of my God, over and above all that I have already provided for the holy [ad]temple, namely, (BH)three thousand [ae]talents of gold, from (BI)the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the [af]buildings; gold for the things of gold and silver for the things of silver, that is, for all the work [ag]done by the craftsmen. Who then is willing [ah]to consecrate himself this day to the Lord?”

Then (BJ)the rulers of the fathers’ households, the leaders of the tribes of Israel, and the commanders of thousands and hundreds, with (BK)the supervisors of the king’s work, offered willingly; and for the service of the house of God they gave five thousand talents and ten thousand [ai](BL)darics of gold, ten thousand talents of silver, eighteen thousand talents of brass, and a hundred thousand talents of iron. [aj]Whoever possessed precious stones gave them to the treasury of the house of the Lord, [ak]in care of (BM)Jehiel the Gershonite. Then the people rejoiced because they had offered so willingly, for they made their offering to the Lord (BN)wholeheartedly, and King David also rejoiced greatly.

David’s Prayer

10 So David blessed the Lord in the sight of all the assembly; and David said, “Blessed are You, Lord God of Israel our father, forever and ever. 11 (BO)Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and on the earth; Yours is the dominion, Lord, and You exalt Yourself as head over all. 12 (BP)Both riches and honor come from You, and You rule over all, and (BQ)in Your hand is power and might; and it lies in Your hand to make great and to strengthen everyone. 13 Now therefore, our God, we thank You, and praise Your glorious name.

14 “But who am I and who are my people that we should [al]be able to offer as generously as this? For all things come from You, and from Your hand we have given to You. 15 For (BR)we are strangers before You, and temporary residents, as all our fathers were; (BS)our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no hope. 16 Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided to build You a house for Your holy name, it is from Your hand, and everything is Yours. 17 Since I know, my God, that (BT)You put the heart to the test and (BU)delight in uprightness, I, in the integrity of my heart, have willingly offered all these things; so now with joy I have seen Your people, who are present here, make their offerings willingly to You. 18 Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our fathers, keep this forever in the [am]intentions of the hearts of Your people, and direct their hearts to You; 19 and (BV)give my son Solomon a perfect heart to keep Your commandments, Your testimonies, and Your statutes, and to do them all, and (BW)to build the [an]temple for which I have made provision.”

20 Then David said to all the assembly, “Now bless the Lord your God.” And (BX)all the assembly blessed the Lord, the God of their fathers, and (BY)bowed down and paid [ao]homage to the Lord and the king.

Sacrifices

21 On the next day (BZ)they [ap]made sacrifices to the Lord and offered burnt offerings to the Lord, a thousand bulls, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, with their drink offerings and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel. 22 So they ate and drank that day before the Lord with great gladness.

Solomon Again Made King

And they made Solomon the son of David king (CA)a second time, and they (CB)anointed him as ruler for the Lord and Zadok as priest. 23 Then (CC)Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord as king instead of his father David; and he prospered, and all Israel obeyed him. 24 And all the officials, the mighty men, and also all the sons of King David [aq]pledged allegiance to King Solomon. 25 (CD)The Lord highly honored Solomon in the sight of all Israel, and (CE)bestowed on him royal majesty which had not been bestowed on any king before him in Israel.

26 Now (CF)David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel. 27 (CG)The period which he reigned over Israel was forty years; he reigned in Hebron seven years and [ar]in Jerusalem thirty-three years.

Death of David

28 Then he died at (CH)a good old age, (CI)full of days, riches, and honor; and his son Solomon reigned in his place. 29 Now the acts of King David, from the first to the last, are written in the chronicles of (CJ)Samuel the seer, in the chronicles of (CK)Nathan the prophet, and in the chronicles of (CL)Gad the seer, 30 with all of his reign, his power, and the circumstances which came upon him, Israel, and all the kingdoms of the lands.

Zechariah(B) the firstborn,

Jediael the second,

Zebadiah the third,

Jathniel the fourth,

Elam the fifth,

Jehohanan the sixth

and Eliehoenai the seventh.

Obed-Edom also had sons:

Shemaiah the firstborn,

Jehozabad the second,

Joah the third,

Sakar the fourth,

Nethanel the fifth,

Ammiel the sixth,

Issachar the seventh

and Peullethai the eighth.

(For God had blessed Obed-Edom.(C))

Obed-Edom’s son Shemaiah also had sons, who were leaders in their father’s family because they were very capable men. The sons of Shemaiah: Othni, Rephael, Obed and Elzabad; his relatives Elihu and Semakiah were also able men. All these were descendants of Obed-Edom; they and their sons and their relatives were capable men with the strength to do the work—descendants of Obed-Edom, 62 in all.

Meshelemiah had sons and relatives, who were able men—18 in all.

10 Hosah the Merarite had sons: Shimri the first (although he was not the firstborn, his father had appointed him the first),(D) 11 Hilkiah the second, Tabaliah the third and Zechariah the fourth. The sons and relatives of Hosah were 13 in all.

12 These divisions of the gatekeepers, through their leaders, had duties for ministering(E) in the temple of the Lord, just as their relatives had. 13 Lots(F) were cast for each gate, according to their families, young and old alike.

14 The lot for the East Gate(G) fell to Shelemiah.[a] Then lots were cast for his son Zechariah,(H) a wise counselor, and the lot for the North Gate fell to him. 15 The lot for the South Gate fell to Obed-Edom,(I) and the lot for the storehouse fell to his sons. 16 The lots for the West Gate and the Shalleketh Gate on the upper road fell to Shuppim and Hosah.

Guard was alongside of guard: 17 There were six Levites a day on the east, four a day on the north, four a day on the south and two at a time at the storehouse. 18 As for the court[b] to the west, there were four at the road and two at the court[c] itself.

19 These were the divisions of the gatekeepers who were descendants of Korah and Merari.(J)

29 From the Izharites: Kenaniah and his sons were assigned duties away from the temple, as officials and judges(T) over Israel.

30 From the Hebronites: Hashabiah(U) and his relatives—seventeen hundred able men—were responsible in Israel west of the Jordan for all the work of the Lord and for the king’s service. 31 As for the Hebronites,(V) Jeriah was their chief according to the genealogical records of their families. In the fortieth(W) year of David’s reign a search was made in the records, and capable men among the Hebronites were found at Jazer in Gilead. 32 Jeriah had twenty-seven hundred relatives, who were able men and heads of families, and King David put them in charge of the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh for every matter pertaining to God and for the affairs of the king.

23 David did not take the number of the men twenty years old or less,(AM) because the Lord had promised to make Israel as numerous as the stars(AN) in the sky. 24 Joab son of Zeruiah began to count the men but did not finish. God’s wrath came on Israel on account of this numbering,(AO) and the number was not entered in the book[e] of the annals of King David.

The King’s Overseers

25 Azmaveth son of Adiel was in charge of the royal storehouses.

All these were the officials in charge of King David’s property.

32 Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a man of insight and a scribe. Jehiel son of Hakmoni took care of the king’s sons.

33 Ahithophel(AS) was the king’s counselor.

Hushai(AT) the Arkite was the king’s confidant. 34 Ahithophel was succeeded by Jehoiada son of Benaiah and by Abiathar.(AU)

Joab(AV) was the commander of the royal army.

David’s Plans for the Temple

28 David summoned(AW) all the officials(AX) of Israel to assemble at Jerusalem: the officers over the tribes, the commanders of the divisions in the service of the king, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and the officials in charge of all the property and livestock belonging to the king and his sons, together with the palace officials, the warriors and all the brave fighting men.

King David rose to his feet and said: “Listen to me, my fellow Israelites, my people. I had it in my heart(AY) to build a house as a place of rest(AZ) for the ark of the covenant of the Lord, for the footstool(BA) of our God, and I made plans to build it.(BB) But God said to me,(BC) ‘You are not to build a house for my Name,(BD) because you are a warrior and have shed blood.’(BE)

“Yet the Lord, the God of Israel, chose me(BF) from my whole family(BG) to be king over Israel forever. He chose Judah(BH) as leader, and from the tribe of Judah he chose my family, and from my father’s sons he was pleased to make me king over all Israel.(BI) Of all my sons—and the Lord has given me many(BJ)—he has chosen my son Solomon(BK) to sit on the throne(BL) of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel. He said to me: ‘Solomon your son is the one who will build(BM) my house and my courts, for I have chosen him to be my son,(BN) and I will be his father. I will establish his kingdom forever if he is unswerving in carrying out my commands and laws,(BO) as is being done at this time.’

“So now I charge you in the sight of all Israel(BP) and of the assembly of the Lord, and in the hearing of our God: Be careful to follow all the commands(BQ) of the Lord your God, that you may possess this good land and pass it on as an inheritance to your descendants forever.(BR)

“And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion(BS) and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart(BT) and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him,(BU) he will be found by you; but if you forsake(BV) him, he will reject(BW) you forever. 10 Consider now, for the Lord has chosen you to build a house as the sanctuary. Be strong and do the work.”

11 Then David gave his son Solomon the plans(BX) for the portico of the temple, its buildings, its storerooms, its upper parts, its inner rooms and the place of atonement. 12 He gave him the plans of all that the Spirit(BY) had put in his mind for the courts of the temple of the Lord and all the surrounding rooms, for the treasuries of the temple of God and for the treasuries for the dedicated things.(BZ) 13 He gave him instructions for the divisions(CA) of the priests and Levites, and for all the work of serving in the temple of the Lord, as well as for all the articles to be used in its service. 14 He designated the weight of gold for all the gold articles to be used in various kinds of service, and the weight of silver for all the silver articles to be used in various kinds of service: 15 the weight of gold for the gold lampstands(CB) and their lamps, with the weight for each lampstand and its lamps; and the weight of silver for each silver lampstand and its lamps, according to the use of each lampstand; 16 the weight of gold for each table(CC) for consecrated bread; the weight of silver for the silver tables; 17 the weight of pure gold for the forks, sprinkling bowls(CD) and pitchers; the weight of gold for each gold dish; the weight of silver for each silver dish; 18 and the weight of the refined gold for the altar of incense.(CE) He also gave him the plan for the chariot,(CF) that is, the cherubim of gold that spread their wings and overshadow(CG) the ark of the covenant of the Lord.

19 “All this,” David said, “I have in writing as a result of the Lord’s hand on me, and he enabled me to understand all the details(CH) of the plan.(CI)

20 David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous,(CJ) and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake(CK) you until all the work for the service of the temple of the Lord is finished.(CL) 21 The divisions of the priests and Levites are ready for all the work on the temple of God, and every willing person skilled(CM) in any craft will help you in all the work. The officials and all the people will obey your every command.”

Gifts for Building the Temple

29 Then King David said to the whole assembly: “My son Solomon, the one whom God has chosen, is young and inexperienced.(CN) The task is great, because this palatial structure is not for man but for the Lord God. With all my resources I have provided for the temple of my God—gold(CO) for the gold work, silver for the silver, bronze for the bronze, iron for the iron and wood for the wood, as well as onyx for the settings, turquoise,[f](CP) stones of various colors, and all kinds of fine stone and marble—all of these in large quantities.(CQ) Besides, in my devotion to the temple of my God I now give my personal treasures of gold and silver for the temple of my God, over and above everything I have provided(CR) for this holy temple: three thousand talents[g] of gold (gold of Ophir)(CS) and seven thousand talents[h] of refined silver,(CT) for the overlaying of the walls of the buildings, for the gold work and the silver work, and for all the work to be done by the craftsmen. Now, who is willing to consecrate themselves to the Lord today?”

Then the leaders of families, the officers of the tribes of Israel, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and the officials(CU) in charge of the king’s work gave willingly.(CV) They(CW) gave toward the work on the temple of God five thousand talents[i] and ten thousand darics[j] of gold, ten thousand talents[k] of silver, eighteen thousand talents[l] of bronze and a hundred thousand talents[m] of iron. Anyone who had precious stones(CX) gave them to the treasury of the temple of the Lord in the custody of Jehiel the Gershonite.(CY) The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly(CZ) to the Lord. David the king also rejoiced greatly.

David’s Prayer

10 David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly, saying,

“Praise be to you, Lord,
the God of our father Israel,
    from everlasting to everlasting.
11 Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power(DA)
and the glory and the majesty and the splendor,
for everything in heaven and earth is yours.(DB)
Yours, Lord, is the kingdom;
you are exalted as head over all.(DC)
12 Wealth and honor(DD) come from you;
you are the ruler(DE) of all things.
In your hands are strength and power
to exalt and give strength to all.
13 Now, our God, we give you thanks,
    and praise your glorious name.

14 “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this?(DF) Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.(DG) 15 We are foreigners and strangers(DH) in your sight, as were all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow,(DI) without hope. 16 Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you. 17 I know, my God, that you test the heart(DJ) and are pleased with integrity. All these things I have given willingly and with honest intent. And now I have seen with joy how willingly your people who are here have given to you.(DK) 18 Lord, the God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac and Israel, keep these desires and thoughts in the hearts of your people forever, and keep their hearts loyal to you. 19 And give my son Solomon the wholehearted devotion(DL) to keep your commands, statutes and decrees(DM) and to do everything to build the palatial structure for which I have provided.”(DN)

20 Then David said to the whole assembly, “Praise the Lord your God.” So they all praised the Lord, the God of their fathers; they bowed down, prostrating themselves before the Lord and the king.

Solomon Acknowledged as King(DO)

21 The next day they made sacrifices to the Lord and presented burnt offerings to him:(DP) a thousand bulls, a thousand rams and a thousand male lambs, together with their drink offerings, and other sacrifices in abundance for all Israel.(DQ) 22 They ate and drank with great joy(DR) in the presence of the Lord that day.

Then they acknowledged Solomon son of David as king a second time, anointing him before the Lord to be ruler and Zadok(DS) to be priest. 23 So Solomon sat(DT) on the throne(DU) of the Lord as king in place of his father David. He prospered and all Israel obeyed him. 24 All the officers and warriors, as well as all of King David’s sons,(DV) pledged their submission to King Solomon.

25 The Lord highly exalted(DW) Solomon in the sight of all Israel and bestowed on him royal splendor(DX) such as no king over Israel ever had before.(DY)

The Death of David(DZ)

26 David son of Jesse was king(EA) over all Israel.(EB) 27 He ruled over Israel forty years—seven in Hebron(EC) and thirty-three in Jerusalem.(ED) 28 He died(EE) at a good old age, having enjoyed long life, wealth and honor. His son Solomon succeeded him as king.(EF)

29 As for the events of King David’s reign, from beginning to end, they are written in the records of Samuel the seer,(EG) the records of Nathan(EH) the prophet and the records of Gad(EI) the seer, 30 together with the details of his reign and power, and the circumstances that surrounded him and Israel and the kingdoms of all the other lands.
