²⁸ Everyone ought to examine themselves^(A) before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. ²⁹ For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. ³⁰ That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.^{(B) 31} But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment.^{(C) 32} Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined^(D) so that we will not be finally condemned with the world.^(E)

²⁶ While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it^(A) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

²⁷ Then he took a cup,^(B) and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. ²⁸ This is my blood of the^[a] covenant,^(C) which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.^(D)
