Immoral Church Members

It is widely reported that there is sexual immorality(A) among you, and the kind of sexual immorality that is not even tolerated[a] among the Gentiles(B)—a man is living with his father’s wife.(C) And you are inflated with pride, instead of filled with grief(D) so that he who has committed this act might be removed from your congregation. For though I am absent in body but present in spirit,(E) I have already decided about the one who has done this thing as though I were present. When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus with my spirit and with the power of our Lord Jesus, turn that one over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh,(F) so that his spirit may be saved in the Day of the Lord.(G)

Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast(H) permeates the whole batch of dough?(I) Clean out the old yeast so that you may be a new batch. You are indeed unleavened, for Christ our Passover(J) has been sacrificed.[b] Therefore, let us observe the feast, not with old yeast or with the yeast of malice and evil(K) but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Church Discipline

I wrote to you in a letter not to associate(L) with sexually immoral people.(M) 10 I did not mean the immoral people of this world or the greedy(N) and swindlers(O) or idolaters; otherwise you would have to leave the world.(P) 11 But now I am writing[c] you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer[d](Q) who is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or verbally abusive, a drunkard(R) or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person. 12 For what business is it of mine to judge(S) outsiders? Don’t you judge those who are inside? 13 But God judges outsiders. Put away the evil person from among yourselves.(T)[e]

Lawsuits among Believers

If any of you has a legal dispute against another, do you dare go to court(U) before the unrighteous,[f] and not before the saints? Or don’t you know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest cases? Don’t you know that we will judge angels—not to mention ordinary matters? So if you have cases pertaining to this life, do you select those[g] who have no standing(V) in the church to judge? I say this to your shame!(W) Can it be that there is not one wise person among you who is able to arbitrate between his brothers?(X) Instead, believer[h] goes to court against believer, and that before unbelievers!(Y)

Therefore, to have legal disputes against one another is already a moral failure for you.(Z) Why not rather put up with injustice?(AA) Why not rather be cheated?(AB) Instead, you act unjustly and cheat—and you do this to believers! Don’t you know that the unrighteous(AC) will not inherit God’s kingdom?(AD) Do not be deceived: No sexually immoral people, idolaters,(AE) adulterers,(AF) or anyone practicing homosexuality,[i](AG) 10 no thieves,(AH) greedy(AI) people, drunkards, verbally abusive people,(AJ) or swindlers(AK) will inherit God’s kingdom. 11 And some of you used to be like this.(AL) But you were washed, you were sanctified,(AM) you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Glorifying God in Body and Spirit

12 “Everything is permissible(AN) for me,”[j] but not everything is helpful. “Everything is permissible for me,” but I will not be brought under the control of anything. 13 “Food(AO) for the stomach and the stomach for food,” but God will do away with both of them.[k] The body is not for sexual immorality(AP) but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 God raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power.(AQ) 15 Don’t you know that your bodies are a part of Christ’s body?(AR) So should I take a part of Christ’s body and make it part of a prostitute? Absolutely not! 16 Don’t you know that anyone joined to a prostitute is one body with her? For Scripture says, The two will become one flesh.(AS)[l] 17 But anyone joined(AT) to the Lord is one spirit(AU) with Him.

18 Run(AV) from sexual immorality! “Every sin a person can commit is outside the body.”[m] On the contrary, the person who is sexually immoral(AW) sins against his own body. 19 Don’t you know that your body is a sanctuary(AX) of the Holy Spirit(AY) who is in you,(AZ) whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought(BA) at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body.[n]

Principles of Marriage

Now in response to the matters you wrote[o] about: “It is good for a man not to have relations with[p] a woman.”[q] But because sexual immorality is so common,[r](BB) each man should have his own wife,(BC) and each woman should have her own husband. A husband should fulfill his marital responsibility(BD) to his wife, and likewise a wife to her husband. A wife does not have the right over her own body, but her husband does. In the same way, a husband does not have the right over his own body, but his wife does. Do not deprive(BE) one another sexually—except when you agree for a time, to devote yourselves to[s] prayer. Then come together again; otherwise, Satan may tempt you because of your lack of self-control. I say the following[t] as a concession, not as a command. I wish that all people were just like me. But each has his own gift(BF) from God, one person in this way and another in that way.

A Word to the Unmarried

I say to the unmarried and to widows:(BG) It is good for them if they remain as I am. But if they do not have self-control,(BH) they should marry, for it is better to marry(BI) than to burn with desire.

About Married People

10 I command the married(BJ)—not I, but the Lord—a wife is not to leave[u] her husband. 11 But if she does leave, she must remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband—and a husband is not to leave his wife.(BK) 12 But I (not the Lord)[v] say to the rest: If any brother(BL) has an unbelieving wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not leave her. 13 Also, if any woman has an unbelieving husband and he is willing to live with her, she must not leave her husband. 14 For the unbelieving husband is set apart for God(BM) by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is set apart for God by the husband.[w] Otherwise your children would be corrupt, but now they are set apart for God. 15 But if the unbeliever leaves, let him leave. A brother or a sister is not bound in such cases. God has called you[x] to live in peace. 16 For you, wife, how do you know whether you will save your husband? Or you, husband, how do you know whether you will save your wife?

Various Situations of Life

17 However, each one must live his life in the situation the Lord assigned when God called(BN) him.[y] This is what I command in all the churches. 18 Was anyone already circumcised when he was called? He should not undo his circumcision. Was anyone called while uncircumcised? He should not get circumcised. 19 Circumcision does not matter and uncircumcision does not matter, but keeping God’s commands does. 20 Each person should remain in the life situation[z] in which he was called. 21 Were you called while a slave? It should not be a concern to you. But if you can become free, by all means take the opportunity.[aa] 22 For he who is called by the Lord as a slave(BO) is the Lord’s freedman.[ab] Likewise he who is called as a free man[ac] is Christ’s slave. 23 You were bought(BP) at a price; do not become slaves of men. 24 Brothers, each person should remain with God in whatever situation he was called.

About the Unmarried and Widows

25 About virgins: I have no command from the Lord, but I do give an opinion as one who by the Lord’s mercy(BQ) is trustworthy.(BR) 26 Therefore I consider this to be good because of the present distress: It is fine for a man to remain as he is. 27 Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be loosed. Are you loosed from a wife? Do not seek a wife. 28 However, if you do get married,(BS) you have not sinned, and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But such people will have trouble in this life,[ad] and I am trying to spare you. 29 And I say this, brothers: The time is limited,(BT) so from now on those who have wives should be as though they had none, 30 those who weep as though they did not weep, those who rejoice(BU) as though they did not rejoice, those who buy as though they did not possess, 31 and those who use the world as though they did not make full use of it. For this world in its current form is passing away.(BV)

32 I want you to be without concerns. An unmarried man is concerned about the things of the Lord—how he may please(BW) the Lord. 33 But a married man is concerned about the things of the world—how he may please his wife— 34 and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or a virgin is concerned about the things of the Lord,(BX) so that she may be holy both in body and in spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the things of the world—how she may please her husband. 35 Now I am saying this for your own benefit, not to put a restraint on you, but because of what is proper and so that you may be devoted to the Lord without distraction.

36 But if any man thinks he is acting improperly toward his virgin,[ae] if she is past marriageable age,[af] and so it must be, he can do what he wants. He is not sinning; they can get married. 37 But he who stands firm in his heart (who is under no compulsion, but has control over his own will(BY)) and has decided in his heart to keep his own virgin, will do well. 38 So then he who marries[ag] his virgin does well, but he who does not marry[ah] will do better.

39 A wife is bound[ai] as long as her husband is living. But if her husband dies, she is free to be married to anyone she wants—only in the Lord.[aj] 40 But she is happier if she remains as she is, in my opinion. And I think that I also have the Spirit of God.

Food Offered to Idols

About food offered to idols:(BZ) We know that “we all have knowledge.”[ak] Knowledge inflates with pride,(CA) but love(CB) builds up. If anyone thinks he knows anything, he does not yet know it as he ought to know it.(CC) But if anyone loves God,(CD) he is known(CE) by Him.

About eating food offered to idols, then, we know that “an idol is nothing in the world,” and that “there is no God but one.”(CF) For even if there are so-called gods,(CG) whether in heaven or on earth—as there are many “gods” and many “lords”—

yet for us there is one God, the Father.(CH)
All things are from Him,(CI)
and we exist for Him.
And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ.
All things are through Him,
and we exist through Him.(CJ)

However, not everyone has this knowledge. In fact, some have been so used to idolatry up until now that when they eat food offered to an idol, their conscience, being weak, is defiled. Food will not make us acceptable to God. We are not inferior if we don’t eat, and we are not better if we do eat.(CK) But be careful that this right of yours in no way becomes a stumbling block(CL) to the weak. 10 For if someone sees you, the one who has this knowledge, dining in an idol’s temple, won’t his weak conscience be encouraged to eat food offered to idols? 11 Then the weak person, the brother for whom Christ died,(CM) is ruined[al](CN) by your knowledge.(CO) 12 Now when you sin like this against the brothers and wound their weak conscience, you are sinning against Christ. 13 Therefore, if food causes my brother to fall, I will never again eat meat,(CP) so that I won’t cause my brother to fall.

Dealing With a Case of Incest

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife.(A) And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning(B) and have put out of your fellowship(C) the man who has been doing this? For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit.(D) As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus(E) on the one who has been doing this. So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, hand this man over(F) to Satan(G) for the destruction of the flesh,[a][b] so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.(H)

Your boasting is not good.(I) Don’t you know that a little yeast(J) leavens the whole batch of dough?(K) Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.(L) Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread(M) of sincerity and truth.

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate(N) with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the people of this world(O) who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11 But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister[c](P) but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater(Q) or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.(R)

12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside(S) the church? Are you not to judge those inside?(T) 13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”[d](U)

Lawsuits Among Believers

If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people?(V) Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world?(W) And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church? I say this to shame you.(X) Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers?(Y) But instead, one brother(Z) takes another to court—and this in front of unbelievers!(AA)

The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?(AB) Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers and sisters.(AC) Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God?(AD) Do not be deceived:(AE) Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers(AF) nor men who have sex with men[e](AG) 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers(AH) will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were.(AI) But you were washed,(AJ) you were sanctified,(AK) you were justified(AL) in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Sexual Immorality

12 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial.(AM) “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.”(AN) The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord,(AO) and the Lord for the body. 14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead,(AP) and he will raise us also.(AQ) 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself?(AR) Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.”[f](AS) 17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.[g](AT)

18 Flee from sexual immorality.(AU) All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.(AV) 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples(AW) of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;(AX) 20 you were bought at a price.(AY) Therefore honor God with your bodies.(AZ)

Concerning Married Life

Now for the matters you wrote about: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.”(BA) But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband. The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife,(BB) and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time,(BC) so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan(BD) will not tempt you(BE) because of your lack of self-control. I say this as a concession, not as a command.(BF) I wish that all of you were as I am.(BG) But each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.(BH)

Now to the unmarried[h] and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do.(BI) But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry,(BJ) for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

10 To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband.(BK) 11 But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband.(BL) And a husband must not divorce his wife.

12 To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord):(BM) If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her. 13 And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.(BN)

15 But if the unbeliever leaves, let it be so. The brother or the sister is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace.(BO) 16 How do you know, wife, whether you will save(BP) your husband?(BQ) Or, how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?

Concerning Change of Status

17 Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them.(BR) This is the rule I lay down in all the churches.(BS) 18 Was a man already circumcised when he was called? He should not become uncircumcised. Was a man uncircumcised when he was called? He should not be circumcised.(BT) 19 Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing.(BU) Keeping God’s commands is what counts. 20 Each person should remain in the situation they were in when God called them.(BV)

21 Were you a slave when you were called? Don’t let it trouble you—although if you can gain your freedom, do so. 22 For the one who was a slave when called to faith in the Lord is the Lord’s freed person;(BW) similarly, the one who was free when called is Christ’s slave.(BX) 23 You were bought at a price;(BY) do not become slaves of human beings. 24 Brothers and sisters, each person, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation they were in when God called them.(BZ)

Concerning the Unmarried

25 Now about virgins: I have no command from the Lord,(CA) but I give a judgment as one who by the Lord’s mercy(CB) is trustworthy. 26 Because of the present crisis, I think that it is good for a man to remain as he is.(CC) 27 Are you pledged to a woman? Do not seek to be released. Are you free from such a commitment? Do not look for a wife.(CD) 28 But if you do marry, you have not sinned;(CE) and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this.

29 What I mean, brothers and sisters, is that the time is short.(CF) From now on those who have wives should live as if they do not; 30 those who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they were not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to keep; 31 those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away.(CG)

32 I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs(CH)—how he can please the Lord. 33 But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can please his wife— 34 and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit.(CI) But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how she can please her husband. 35 I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided(CJ) devotion to the Lord.

36 If anyone is worried that he might not be acting honorably toward the virgin he is engaged to, and if his passions are too strong[i] and he feels he ought to marry, he should do as he wants. He is not sinning.(CK) They should get married. 37 But the man who has settled the matter in his own mind, who is under no compulsion but has control over his own will, and who has made up his mind not to marry the virgin—this man also does the right thing. 38 So then, he who marries the virgin does right,(CL) but he who does not marry her does better.[j]

39 A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives.(CM) But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but he must belong to the Lord.(CN) 40 In my judgment,(CO) she is happier if she stays as she is—and I think that I too have the Spirit of God.

Concerning Food Sacrificed to Idols

Now about food sacrificed to idols:(CP) We know that “We all possess knowledge.”(CQ) But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. Those who think they know something(CR) do not yet know as they ought to know.(CS) But whoever loves God is known by God.[k](CT)

So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols:(CU) We know that “An idol is nothing at all in the world”(CV) and that “There is no God but one.”(CW) For even if there are so-called gods,(CX) whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), yet for us there is but one God,(CY) the Father,(CZ) from whom all things came(DA) and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord,(DB) Jesus Christ, through whom all things came(DC) and through whom we live.

But not everyone possesses this knowledge.(DD) Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak,(DE) it is defiled. But food does not bring us near to God;(DF) we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.

Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block(DG) to the weak.(DH) 10 For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol’s temple, won’t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols?(DI) 11 So this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed(DJ) by your knowledge. 12 When you sin against them(DK) in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.(DL) 13 Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.(DM)

He should let her get married. 37 But the man who has settled the matter in his own mind, who is under no compulsion but has control over his own will, and who has made up his mind to keep the virgin unmarried—this man also does the right thing. 38 So then, he who gives his virgin in marriage does right, but he who does not give her in marriage does better.
