New English Translation
36 Next the king summoned[a] Shimei and told him, “Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and live there, but you may not leave there to go anywhere.[b] 37 If you ever do leave and cross the Kidron Valley, know for sure that you will certainly die. You will be responsible for your own death.”[c] 38 Shimei said to the king, “My master the king’s proposal is acceptable.[d] Your servant will do as you say.”[e] So Shimei lived in Jerusalem for a long time.[f]

36 Then the king sent for Shimei(A) and said to him, “Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and live there, but do not go anywhere else. 37 The day you leave and cross the Kidron Valley,(B) you can be sure you will die; your blood will be on your own head.”(C)
38 Shimei answered the king, “What you say is good. Your servant will do as my lord the king has said.” And Shimei stayed in Jerusalem for a long time.
