Christ suffered in his body. You also must be ready to have the same trouble happen to you. When a man has suffered in his body, he has stopped doing wrong things.

For the rest of his life on earth he will not do what people want to do. He will do what God wants him to do.

In the time past you did the same things as people who do not believe God. Let that be enough. You did things you should be ashamed of. You did what you wanted to do. You got drunk. You got into fights. You took part in noisy feasting with dancing. You did wrong by worshipping idols.

Those people are surprised now that you do not do the same wrong things they do. And they say wrong things about you.

They will have to explain what they are doing. They will have to talk to God about what they have done. He is ready to judge living people and dead people.

That is why the good news was also told to those who are now dead. They will be judged like men who are alive. This was done so that they could live like God in the spirit.

It is almost the time when the world will end. So be wise and watch and talk to God.

Here is something that matters very much. You must love each other very much. Love will cover up many wrong things.

Be glad to take other Christians into your house and care for them. And do not grumble about it.

10 God has given each person a gift. That gift is something he can do. Each one should use his gift to help the others. In that way you all make good use of the many blessings God has given you.

11 Has God blessed you by knowing how to talk? Then you should talk the words of God. Are you a helper? Then you should help with the strength God has given you. In all that you do, you should show that God is great through Jesus Christ. He has praise and power for ever. Yes, he has!

12 My dear brothers, do not be surprised by the hard trouble like fire that comes to test you. Do not think some new thing is happening to you.

13 Be glad when you suffer as Christ did. Then you will also be very glad when he comes and you see how great he is.

14 Do men say wrong things about you because you are a Christian? Then you are blessed because the wonderful Spirit, the Spirit of God, is with you.

15 Do not kill. Do not steal. Do not do wrong. Do not try to boss other people. None of you should suffer because you have done these things.

16 But if a man suffers because he is a Christian, he should not be ashamed of it. He should praise God that he is a Christian.

17 The time has come for God to judge people. God's people will be judged first. If we are judged first, what will happen at the end to those who do not obey the good news of God?

18 The holy writings say, `If it is hard for a good person to be saved, what will happen to a person who is against God and lives a bad life?'

19 If God allows you to suffer, trust him. He made you and you can trust him. But keep on doing good things.

So I am talking to the leaders among you. I am also a leader. I saw the sufferings of Christ. And I will have some part of his greatness when he comes again.

Take good care of God's people. They have been given to you to care for. Do this, not because you must do it, but because you want to please God. Do it not for the money that you get for doing it, but because you are glad to do it.

Do not be like a boss over the people you care for, telling them how to live. But show them how to live by the way you live.

Christ the big Shepherd who takes care of all people is coming. When he comes, he will give you a crown to show that you are great. You will have it for ever.

Also, you who are younger men, obey your leaders. I say to all of you, do not be proud. Do not think you are better than the others. The holy writings say, `God fights against proud people, but he helps those who are not proud.'

You are under God's power. Do not be proud, so that at the right time he may put you into a higher place.

Turn all your troubles over to him, because he cares for you and is watching over you.

Keep awake! Watch! Your enemy the devil is walking around like a growling lion. He is looking for someone to catch.

Fight against the devil. Be strong because you believe. Remember that your brothers all over the world suffer the same kind of trouble as you.

10 God gives all blessings. He has called you through Christ to be great with him for ever. When you have suffered for a short time, he will make you all right. He will make you strong and steady.

11 He has power for ever. Yes, he has!

12 Silas has written this short letter for me. I believe he is a brother who can be trusted. I have written to help you and tell you the true way to have God's blessing. Stand firm in that way!

13 The church people in the city of Babylon greet you. God has also chosen them. My son Mark also greets you.

14 Greet one another with a kiss of love. May all of you who are Christians have peace.

Living for God

Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body,(A) arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin.(B) As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires,(C) but rather for the will of God. For you have spent enough time in the past(D) doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry.(E) They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.(F) But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.(G) For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead,(H) so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

The end of all things is near.(I) Therefore be alert and of sober mind(J) so that you may pray. Above all, love each other deeply,(K) because love covers over a multitude of sins.(L) Offer hospitality(M) to one another without grumbling.(N) 10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others,(O) as faithful(P) stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God.(Q) If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides,(R) so that in all things God may be praised(S) through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.(T)

Suffering for Being a Christian

12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you(U) to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice(V) inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ,(W) so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.(X) 14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ,(Y) you are blessed,(Z) for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.(AA) 17 For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household;(AB) and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?(AC) 18 And,

“If it is hard for the righteous to be saved,
what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”[a](AD)

19 So then, those who suffer according to God’s will(AE) should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

To the Elders and the Flock

To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder(AF) and a witness(AG) of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed:(AH) Be shepherds of God’s flock(AI) that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be;(AJ) not pursuing dishonest gain,(AK) but eager to serve; not lording it over(AL) those entrusted to you, but being examples(AM) to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd(AN) appears, you will receive the crown of glory(AO) that will never fade away.(AP)

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves(AQ) to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility(AR) toward one another, because,

“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”[b](AS)

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.(AT) Cast all your anxiety on him(AU) because he cares for you.(AV)

Be alert and of sober mind.(AW) Your enemy the devil prowls around(AX) like a roaring lion(AY) looking for someone to devour. Resist him,(AZ) standing firm in the faith,(BA) because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.(BB)

10 And the God of all grace, who called you(BC) to his eternal glory(BD) in Christ, after you have suffered a little while,(BE) will himself restore you and make you strong,(BF) firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.(BG)

Final Greetings

12 With the help of Silas,[c](BH) whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly,(BI) encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.(BJ)

13 She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark.(BK) 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love.(BL)

Peace(BM) to all of you who are in Christ.
