4 Og Samuels ord kom til hele Israel, og Israel drog ut for å stride mot filistrene; de leiret sig ved Eben-Eser, og filistrene leiret sig i Afek.
2 Og filistrene stilte sig i fylking mot Israel, og striden bredte sig ut, og Israel blev slått av filistrene; og filistrene felte på slagmarken omkring fire tusen mann.
3 Og da folket kom til leiren, sa Israels eldste: Hvorfor har Herren idag latt oss bli slått av filistrene? La oss hente Herrens pakts-ark til oss fra Silo, så den kan komme hit iblandt oss og frelse oss av våre fienders hånd.
4 Så sendte folket bud til Silo, og de hentet derfra Herrens, hærskarenes Guds pakts-ark, hans som troner på kjerubene; og begge Elis sønner, Hofni og Pinehas, var med og fulgte Guds pakts-ark.
5 Med det samme Herrens pakts-ark kom til leiren, satte hele Israel i et stort fryderop, så jorden rystet.
6 Og da filistrene hørte lyden av fryderopet, sa de: Hvad er dette for et stort fryderop i hebreernes leir? Og de fikk vite at Herrens ark var kommet til leiren.
7 Da blev filistrene redde; for de tenkte: Gud er kommet til leiren. Og de sa: Ve oss! Sådant har ikke hendt før.
8 Ve oss! Hvem skal fri oss av disse veldige guders hånd? Dette er de guder som slo Egypten med alle slags plager i ørkenen.
9 Ta mot til eder og vær menn, I filistrer, forat I ikke skal komme til å træle for hebreerne, likesom de har trælet for eder! Vær menn og strid!
10 Da gikk filistrene til strid, og Israel blev slått, og de flyktet hver til sitt telt, og der blev et meget stort mannefall - det falt tretti tusen mann av Israels fotfolk.
11 Og Guds ark blev tatt, og begge Elis sønner, Hofni og Pinehas, mistet livet.
12 Da løp en mann av Benjamin fra slagmarken og kom samme dag til Silo med sønderrevne klær og med jord på sitt hode.
13 Da han kom frem, da satt Eli på sin stol ved siden av veien og så bortefter, for hans hjerte var fullt av angst for Guds ark. Da nu mannen kom til byen med buskapet, da satte hele byen i et jammerskrik.
14 Eli hørte skriket og sa: Hvad er dette for en larm? Da skyndte mannen sig og kom og fortalte det til Eli.
15 Eli var da åtte og nitti år gammel, og hans øine var stive - han kunde ikke se.
16 Da nu mannen sa til Eli: Det er jeg som er kommet fra slagmarken, jeg flyktet fra slagmarken idag, så spurte han: Hvorledes er det gått, min sønn?
17 Den som kom med buskapet, svarte: Israel er flyktet for filistrene, og det har vært et stort mannefall blandt folket; dine to sønner, Hofni og Pinehas, har og mistet livet, og Guds ark er tatt.
18 Med det samme han nevnte Guds ark, falt Eli baklengs ned av stolen ved siden av porten, brakk nakkebenet og døde; for mannen var gammel og tung. Han hadde dømt Israel i firti år.
19 Hans sønnekone, Pinehas' hustru, var fruktsommelig og nær ved å føde, og da hun hørte buskapet om at Guds ark var tatt, og at hennes svigerfar og hennes mann var død, seg hun i kne og fødte; for veene kom brått over henne.
20 I hennes dødsstund sa de kvinner som stod hos henne: Vær ved godt mot; du har født en sønn! Men hun svarte ikke og aktet ikke derpå.
21 Hun kalte gutten Ikabod[a] og sa: Bortveket er herligheten fra Israel - fordi Guds ark var tatt, og for hennes svigerfars og hennes manns skyld.
22 Hun sa: Bortveket er herligheten fra Israel; for Guds ark er tatt.
5 Filistrene tok Guds ark og førte den fra Eben-Eser til Asdod.
2 Der tok filistrene Guds ark og førte den inn i Dagons hus og stilte den op ved siden av Dagon.
3 Tidlig den følgende dag fikk asdodittene se at Dagon var falt ned med ansiktet mot jorden foran Herrens ark; og de tok Dagon og satte ham igjen på hans plass.
4 Men tidlig om morgenen den næste dag fikk de se at Dagon var falt ned med ansiktet mot jorden foran Herrens ark, og at Dagons hode og begge hans hender lå avhugget på dørtreskelen; bare kroppen var tilbake av Dagon.
5 Derfor er det at Dagons prester og alle som går inn i Dagons hus, like til denne dag ikke treder på Dagons dørtreskel i Asdod.
6 Og Herrens hånd lå tungt på asdodittene, og han ødela dem og slo dem med bylder, både i Asdod selv og i de omliggende bygder.
7 Da Asdods menn så at det gikk således, sa de: Israels Guds ark skal ikke bli hos oss; for hans hånd ligger hårdt på oss og på Dagon vår gud.
8 Og de sendte bud og samlet alle filistrenes høvdinger hos sig og sa: Hvad skal vi gjøre med Israels Guds ark? De svarte: La Israels Guds ark bli flyttet til Gat! Så flyttet de Israels Guds ark dit.
9 Men efterat de hadde flyttet den dit, kom Herrens hånd over byen og voldte stor forferdelse, og han slo byens folk, både små og store, så det brøt bylder ut på dem.
10 Da sendte de Guds ark til Ekron. Men da Guds ark kom til Ekron, da skrek ekronittene: De har flyttet Israels Guds ark hit til mig for å drepe mig og mitt folk.
11 Og de sendte bud og samlet alle filistrenes høvdinger og sa: Send Israels Guds ark bort, og la den komme tilbake til sin plass, så den ikke skal drepe mig og mitt folk! For det var kommet en dødsens forferdelse over hele byen; Herrens hånd lå meget tungt på den.
12 De menn som ikke døde, blev slått med bylder, og skriket fra byen steg op til himmelen.
6 Herrens ark var i filistrenes land i syv måneder.
2 Da tilkalte filistrene prestene og spåmennene og sa: Hvad skal vi gjøre med Herrens ark? Si oss hvorledes vi skal sende den fra oss tilbake til dens plass!
3 De svarte: Dersom I sender Israels Guds ark bort, må I ikke sende den uten gaver, men I skal gi ham et skyldoffer til vederlag; da skal I bli lægt, og I skal få vite hvorfor hans hånd ikke viker fra eder.
4 Da sa de: Hvad er det for et skyldoffer vi skal gi ham til vederlag? De svarte: Fem bylder av gull og fem mus av gull, efter tallet på filistrenes høvdinger; for det er en og samme plage som har rammet alle, også eders høvdinger.
5 I skal gjøre billeder av eders bylder og billeder av musene som ødelegger eders land, og gi Israels Gud ære; kanskje han da tar sin tunge hånd bort fra eder og fra eders gud og fra eders land.
6 Hvorfor vil I forherde eders hjerte, likesom egypterne og Farao forherdet sitt hjerte. Måtte de ikke la dem fare og dra bort da han hadde latt dem få kjenne sin makt?
7 Ta nu og gjør en ny vogn, og ta så to nybære kyr som det ikke er kommet åk på, og spenn kyrne for vognen, men ta kalvene fra dem og før dem hjem!
8 Så skal I ta Herrens ark og sette den på vognen, og de gullsaker som I gir ham til skyldoffer, skal I legge i et skrin ved siden av den og så sende den avsted.
9 Så skal I se efter om den tar veien opover til sitt eget land, til Betsemes; for da er det han som har voldt oss denne store ulykke; men hvis ikke, så vet vi at det ikke er hans hånd som har rammet oss; da er det bare et tilfelle at dette har hendt oss.
10 Og mennene gjorde således: De tok to nybære kyr og spente dem for vognen, men kalvene holdt de tilbake hjemme.
11 Så satte de Herrens ark på vognen og likeså skrinet og gullmusene og billedene av sine bylder.
12 Og kyrne gikk rett frem efter veien som førte til Betsemes; de holdt stadig samme vei og rautet alt i ett og bøide ikke av hverken til høire eller til venstre, og filistrenes høvdinger gikk efter dem like til Betsemes-bygden.
13 Innbyggerne i Betsemes var nettop i ferd med å høste hveten i dalen; og da de så op, fikk de se arken, og de blev glade da de så den.
14 Da vognen kom inn på betsemesitten Josvas mark, stanset den der. Der lå en stor sten. Da hugg de treverket i vognen i stykker og ofret kyrne til brennoffer for Herren.
15 Og levittene tok ned Herrens ark og skrinet som stod ved den, det som gullsakene var i, og de satte dem på den store sten, og Betsemes' menn ofret samme dag brennoffer og slaktoffer til Herren.
16 Filistrenes fem høvdinger så på dette og vendte samme dag tilbake til Ekron.
17 Dette var de bylder av gull som filistrene gav som skyldoffer til Herren: for Asdod én, for Gasa én, for Askalon én, for Gat én, for Ekron én.
18 Og gullmusene svarte til tallet på alle filistrenes byer som tilhørte de fem høvdinger, både de faste byer og landsbyene. Vidne herom er den dag idag den store sten på betsemesitten Josvas mark som de satte Herrens ark på.
19 Men Herren slo nogen av mennene i Betsemes fordi de hadde sett på Herrens ark - sytti mann av folket slo han; og folket sørget fordi Herren hadde slått så mange av folket ihjel.
20 Og mennene i Betsemes sa: Hvem kan holde stand for Herrens, denne hellige Guds åsyn, og til hvem skal han dra op fra oss?
21 Så sendte de bud til innbyggerne i Kirjat-Jearim og lot si: Filistrene har ført Herrens ark tilbake; kom ned og hent den op til eder!
7 Da kom Kirjat-Jearims menn og hentet Herrens ark op og bar den inn i Abinadabs hus på haugen, og hans sønn Eleasar vidde de til å ta vare på Herrens ark.
2 Fra den dag arken kom til Kirjat-Jearim, gikk det en lang tid - tyve år gikk det; da sukket hele Israels hus efter Herren[b].
3 Og Samuel sa til hele Israels hus: Dersom I vender om til Herren av hele eders hjerte, så ha de fremmede guder og Astarte-billedene bort fra eder og vend eders hjerte til Herren og tjen ham alene! Så skal han fri eder av filistrenes hånd.
4 Da skilte Israels barn sig av med Ba'alene og Astarte-billedene og tjente Herren alene.
5 Og Samuel sa: La hele Israel samle sig i Mispa! Så vil jeg bede til Herren for eder.
6 Så samlet de sig i Mispa, og de øste op vann og helte det ut for Herrens åsyn[c], og de fastet den dag og bekjente der: Vi har syndet mot Herren. Og Samuel dømte Israels barn i Mispa.
7 Da filistrene hørte at Israels barn hadde samlet sig i Mispa, drog filistrenes høvdinger op imot Israel, og da Israels barn hørte det, var de redde for filistrene.
8 Og Israels barn sa til Samuel: Hold ikke op med å rope for oss til Herren vår Gud at han vil frelse oss av filistrenes hånd!
9 Da tok Samuel et diende lam og ofret det helt som brennoffer til Herren, og Samuel ropte til Herren for Israel, og Herren svarte ham.
10 For mens Samuel ofret brennofferet, og filistrene rykket frem til strid mot Israel, da sendte Herren samme dag et sterkt tordenvær over filistrene og forferdet dem, så de blev slått av Israel.
11 Da drog Israels menn ut fra Mispa og forfulgte filistrene og hugg dem ned, like til nedenfor Bet-Kar.
12 Og Samuel tok en sten og satte den imellem Mispa og Sen; denne sten kalte han Eben-Eser[d] og sa: Hittil har Herren hjulpet oss.
13 Således blev filistrene ydmyket og kom ikke mere inn i Israels land; og Herrens hånd var imot filistrene alle Samuels dager.
14 Og de byer som filistrene hadde tatt fra Israel, kom tilbake til Israel igjen, fra Ekron like til Gat, og alt land som hørte til dem, fridde Israel av filistrenes hånd, og det var fred mellem Israel og amorittene.
15 Samuel dømte Israel så lenge han levde.
16 År efter år drog han omkring til Betel og Gilgal og Mispa og dømte Israel på alle disse steder.
17 Og hver gang vendte han tilbake til Rama; for der var hans hus, og der dømte han Israel; og han bygget der et alter for Herren.
8 Da Samuel blev gammel, satte han sine sønner til dommere over Israel.
2 Hans førstefødte sønn hette Joel og hans annen sønn Abia; de dømte i Be'erseba.
3 Men hans sønner vandret ikke på hans veier, men søkte bare egen vinning og tok imot gaver og bøide retten.
4 Da samlet alle Israels eldste sig og kom til Samuel i Rama.
5 Og de sa til ham: Nu er du blitt gammel, og dine sønner vandrer ikke på dine veier; så sett nu en konge over oss til å dømme oss, som alle folkene har!
6 Men det ord gjorde Samuel ondt, da de sa: Gi oss en konge til å dømme oss! Og Samuel bad til Herren.
7 Da sa Herren til Samuel: Lyd folket i alt hvad de sier til dig! For det er ikke dig de har forkastet, men det er mig de har forkastet, så jeg ikke skal være konge over dem.
8 Som de alltid har gjort fra den dag jeg førte dem op fra Egypten, til den dag idag, idet de forlot mig og tjente andre guder, således gjør de nu også mot dig.
9 Men lyd nu deres ord! Du må bare alvorlig vidne for dem og foreholde dem hvorledes han vil bære sig at den konge som kommer til å råde over dem.
10 Så sa Samuel alle Herrens ord til folket som krevde en konge av ham.
11 Han sa: Således vil han bære sig at den konge som kommer til å råde over eder: Eders sønner vil han ta og sette dem til å stelle med sin vogn og sine hester, og de skal løpe foran hans vogn,
12 Og han vil sette dem til høvdinger over tusen og høvdinger over femti og til å pløie hans akrer og høste hans avling og til å gjøre hans krigsredskaper og hans kjøretøi.
13 Eders døtre vil han ta og sette til å lage salver og til å koke og bake for ham.
14 Eders beste jorder og vingårder og oljehaver vil han ta og gi sine tjenere.
15 Og av eders akrer og eders vingårder vil han ta tiende og gi sine hoffmenn og sine tjenere.
16 Eders træler og eders trælkvinner og eders beste unge menn og eders asener vil han ta og bruke til sitt arbeid.
17 Av eders småfe vil han ta tiende, og I selv skal være hans træler.
18 Da skal I en dag rope til Herren for den konges skyld som I har kåret eder; men den dag skal Herren ikke svare eder.
19 Men folket vilde ikke høre på Samuel, de sa: Nei, vi vil ha en konge over oss.
20 Vi vil være som alle de andre folk; vår konge skal dømme oss, og han skal dra ut foran oss og føre våre kriger.
21 Da Samuel hadde hørt alle folkets ord, bar han dem frem for Herren.
22 Og Herren sa til Samuel: Lyd deres ord og sett en konge over dem! Så sa Samuel til Israels menn: Gå hjem hver til sin by!

4 And Samuel’s word came to all Israel.
The Philistines Capture the Ark
Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer,(A) and the Philistines at Aphek.(B) 2 The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. 3 When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why(C) did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark(D) of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh,(E) so that he may go with us(F) and save us from the hand of our enemies.”
4 So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim.(G) And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout(H) that the ground shook. 6 Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, “What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew(I) camp?”
When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, 7 the Philistines were afraid.(J) “A god has[a] come into the camp,” they said. “Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before. 8 We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck(K) the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues(L) in the wilderness. 9 Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they(M) have been to you. Be men, and fight!”
10 So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated(N) and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11 The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.(O)
Death of Eli
12 That same day a Benjamite(P) ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust(Q) on his head. 13 When he arrived, there was Eli(R) sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.
14 Eli heard the outcry and asked, “What is the meaning of this uproar?”
The man hurried over to Eli, 15 who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes(S) had failed so that he could not see. 16 He told Eli, “I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.”
Eli asked, “What happened, my son?”
17 The man who brought the news replied, “Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead,(T) and the ark of God has been captured.”(U)
18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led[b](V) Israel forty years.(W)
19 His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. 20 As she was dying, the women attending her said, “Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.” But she did not respond or pay any attention.
21 She named the boy Ichabod,[c](X) saying, “The Glory(Y) has departed from Israel”—because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 She said, “The Glory(Z) has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”(AA)
The Ark in Ashdod and Ekron
5 After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer(AB) to Ashdod.(AC) 2 Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon.(AD) 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen(AE) on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken(AF) off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. 5 That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.(AG)
6 The Lord’s hand(AH) was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation(AI) on them and afflicted them with tumors.[d](AJ) 7 When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.” 8 So they called together all the rulers(AK) of the Philistines and asked them, “What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?”
They answered, “Have the ark of the god of Israel moved to Gath.(AL)” So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.
9 But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic.(AM) He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.[e] 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.(AN)
As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought the ark of the god of Israel around to us to kill us and our people.” 11 So they called together all the rulers(AO) of the Philistines and said, “Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it[f] will kill us and our people.” For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it. 12 Those who did not die(AP) were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.
The Ark Returned to Israel
6 When the ark of the Lord had been in Philistine territory seven months, 2 the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners(AQ) and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the Lord? Tell us how we should send it back to its place.”
3 They answered, “If you return the ark of the god of Israel, do not send it back to him without a gift;(AR) by all means send a guilt offering(AS) to him. Then you will be healed, and you will know why his hand(AT) has not been lifted from you.”
4 The Philistines asked, “What guilt offering should we send to him?”
They replied, “Five gold tumors and five gold rats, according to the number(AU) of the Philistine rulers, because the same plague(AV) has struck both you and your rulers. 5 Make models of the tumors(AW) and of the rats that are destroying the country, and give glory(AX) to Israel’s god. Perhaps he will lift his hand from you and your gods and your land. 6 Why do you harden(AY) your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh did? When Israel’s god dealt harshly with them,(AZ) did they(BA) not send the Israelites out so they could go on their way?
7 “Now then, get a new cart(BB) ready, with two cows that have calved and have never been yoked.(BC) Hitch the cows to the cart, but take their calves away and pen them up. 8 Take the ark of the Lord and put it on the cart, and in a chest beside it put the gold objects you are sending back to him as a guilt offering. Send it on its way, 9 but keep watching it. If it goes up to its own territory, toward Beth Shemesh,(BD) then the Lord has brought this great disaster on us. But if it does not, then we will know that it was not his hand that struck us but that it happened to us by chance.”
10 So they did this. They took two such cows and hitched them to the cart and penned up their calves. 11 They placed the ark of the Lord on the cart and along with it the chest containing the gold rats and the models of the tumors. 12 Then the cows went straight up toward Beth Shemesh, keeping on the road and lowing all the way; they did not turn to the right or to the left. The rulers of the Philistines followed them as far as the border of Beth Shemesh.
13 Now the people of Beth Shemesh were harvesting their wheat(BE) in the valley, and when they looked up and saw the ark, they rejoiced at the sight. 14 The cart came to the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh, and there it stopped beside a large rock. The people chopped up the wood of the cart and sacrificed the cows as a burnt offering(BF) to the Lord. 15 The Levites(BG) took down the ark of the Lord, together with the chest containing the gold objects, and placed them on the large rock.(BH) On that day the people of Beth Shemesh(BI) offered burnt offerings and made sacrifices to the Lord. 16 The five rulers of the Philistines saw all this and then returned that same day to Ekron.
17 These are the gold tumors the Philistines sent as a guilt offering to the Lord—one each(BJ) for Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron. 18 And the number of the gold rats was according to the number of Philistine towns belonging to the five rulers—the fortified towns with their country villages. The large rock on which the Levites set the ark of the Lord is a witness to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh.
19 But God struck down(BK) some of the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh, putting seventy[g] of them to death because they looked(BL) into the ark of the Lord. The people mourned because of the heavy blow the Lord had dealt them. 20 And the people of Beth Shemesh asked, “Who can stand(BM) in the presence of the Lord, this holy(BN) God? To whom will the ark go up from here?”
21 Then they sent messengers to the people of Kiriath Jearim,(BO) saying, “The Philistines have returned the ark of the Lord. Come down and take it up to your town.” 7 1 So the men of Kiriath Jearim came and took up the ark(BP) of the Lord. They brought it to Abinadab’s(BQ) house on the hill and consecrated Eleazar his son to guard the ark of the Lord. 2 The ark remained at Kiriath Jearim(BR) a long time—twenty years in all.
Samuel Subdues the Philistines at Mizpah
Then all the people of Israel turned back to the Lord.(BS) 3 So Samuel said to all the Israelites, “If you are returning(BT) to the Lord with all your hearts, then rid(BU) yourselves of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths(BV) and commit(BW) yourselves to the Lord and serve him only,(BX) and he will deliver(BY) you out of the hand of the Philistines.” 4 So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtoreths, and served the Lord only.
5 Then Samuel(BZ) said, “Assemble all Israel at Mizpah,(CA) and I will intercede(CB) with the Lord for you.” 6 When they had assembled at Mizpah,(CC) they drew water and poured(CD) it out before the Lord. On that day they fasted and there they confessed, “We have sinned against the Lord.” Now Samuel was serving as leader[h](CE) of Israel at Mizpah.
7 When the Philistines heard that Israel had assembled at Mizpah, the rulers of the Philistines came up to attack them. When the Israelites heard of it, they were afraid(CF) because of the Philistines. 8 They said to Samuel, “Do not stop crying(CG) out to the Lord our God for us, that he may rescue us from the hand of the Philistines.” 9 Then Samuel(CH) took a suckling lamb and sacrificed it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. He cried out to the Lord on Israel’s behalf, and the Lord answered him.(CI)
10 While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage Israel in battle. But that day the Lord thundered(CJ) with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic(CK) that they were routed before the Israelites. 11 The men of Israel rushed out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, slaughtering them along the way to a point below Beth Kar.
12 Then Samuel took a stone(CL) and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer,[i](CM) saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”
13 So the Philistines were subdued(CN) and they stopped invading Israel’s territory. Throughout Samuel’s lifetime, the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines. 14 The towns from Ekron(CO) to Gath that the Philistines had captured from Israel were restored to Israel, and Israel delivered the neighboring territory from the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.(CP)
15 Samuel(CQ) continued as Israel’s leader(CR) all(CS) the days of his life. 16 From year to year he went on a circuit from Bethel(CT) to Gilgal(CU) to Mizpah, judging(CV) Israel in all those places. 17 But he always went back to Ramah,(CW) where his home was, and there he also held court(CX) for Israel. And he built an altar(CY) there to the Lord.
Israel Asks for a King
8 When Samuel grew old, he appointed(CZ) his sons as Israel’s leaders.[j] 2 The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah,(DA) and they served at Beersheba.(DB) 3 But his sons(DC) did not follow his ways. They turned aside(DD) after dishonest gain and accepted bribes(DE) and perverted(DF) justice.
4 So all the elders(DG) of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.(DH) 5 They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king(DI) to lead[k](DJ) us, such as all the other nations(DK) have.”
6 But when they said, “Give us a king(DL) to lead us,” this displeased(DM) Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord told him: “Listen(DN) to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected,(DO) but they have rejected me as their king.(DP) 8 As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking(DQ) me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know(DR) what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”
10 Samuel told(DS) all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. 11 He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take(DT) your sons and make them serve(DU) with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.(DV) 12 Some he will assign to be commanders(DW) of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your(DX) fields and vineyards(DY) and olive groves and give them to his attendants.(DZ) 15 He will take a tenth(EA) of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. 16 Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle[l] and donkeys he will take for his own use. 17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. 18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer(EB) you in that day.(EC)”
19 But the people refused(ED) to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want(EE) a king(EF) over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations,(EG) with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”
21 When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated(EH) it before the Lord. 22 The Lord answered, “Listen(EI) to them and give them a king.”
Then Samuel said to the Israelites, “Everyone go back to your own town.”
