7 Da kom Kirjat-Jearims menn og hentet Herrens ark op og bar den inn i Abinadabs hus på haugen, og hans sønn Eleasar vidde de til å ta vare på Herrens ark.
2 Fra den dag arken kom til Kirjat-Jearim, gikk det en lang tid - tyve år gikk det; da sukket hele Israels hus efter Herren[a].
3 Og Samuel sa til hele Israels hus: Dersom I vender om til Herren av hele eders hjerte, så ha de fremmede guder og Astarte-billedene bort fra eder og vend eders hjerte til Herren og tjen ham alene! Så skal han fri eder av filistrenes hånd.
4 Da skilte Israels barn sig av med Ba'alene og Astarte-billedene og tjente Herren alene.
5 Og Samuel sa: La hele Israel samle sig i Mispa! Så vil jeg bede til Herren for eder.
6 Så samlet de sig i Mispa, og de øste op vann og helte det ut for Herrens åsyn[b], og de fastet den dag og bekjente der: Vi har syndet mot Herren. Og Samuel dømte Israels barn i Mispa.
7 Da filistrene hørte at Israels barn hadde samlet sig i Mispa, drog filistrenes høvdinger op imot Israel, og da Israels barn hørte det, var de redde for filistrene.
8 Og Israels barn sa til Samuel: Hold ikke op med å rope for oss til Herren vår Gud at han vil frelse oss av filistrenes hånd!
9 Da tok Samuel et diende lam og ofret det helt som brennoffer til Herren, og Samuel ropte til Herren for Israel, og Herren svarte ham.
10 For mens Samuel ofret brennofferet, og filistrene rykket frem til strid mot Israel, da sendte Herren samme dag et sterkt tordenvær over filistrene og forferdet dem, så de blev slått av Israel.
11 Da drog Israels menn ut fra Mispa og forfulgte filistrene og hugg dem ned, like til nedenfor Bet-Kar.
12 Og Samuel tok en sten og satte den imellem Mispa og Sen; denne sten kalte han Eben-Eser[c] og sa: Hittil har Herren hjulpet oss.
13 Således blev filistrene ydmyket og kom ikke mere inn i Israels land; og Herrens hånd var imot filistrene alle Samuels dager.
14 Og de byer som filistrene hadde tatt fra Israel, kom tilbake til Israel igjen, fra Ekron like til Gat, og alt land som hørte til dem, fridde Israel av filistrenes hånd, og det var fred mellem Israel og amorittene.
15 Samuel dømte Israel så lenge han levde.
16 År efter år drog han omkring til Betel og Gilgal og Mispa og dømte Israel på alle disse steder.
17 Og hver gang vendte han tilbake til Rama; for der var hans hus, og der dømte han Israel; og han bygget der et alter for Herren.
8 Da Samuel blev gammel, satte han sine sønner til dommere over Israel.
2 Hans førstefødte sønn hette Joel og hans annen sønn Abia; de dømte i Be'erseba.
3 Men hans sønner vandret ikke på hans veier, men søkte bare egen vinning og tok imot gaver og bøide retten.
4 Da samlet alle Israels eldste sig og kom til Samuel i Rama.
5 Og de sa til ham: Nu er du blitt gammel, og dine sønner vandrer ikke på dine veier; så sett nu en konge over oss til å dømme oss, som alle folkene har!
6 Men det ord gjorde Samuel ondt, da de sa: Gi oss en konge til å dømme oss! Og Samuel bad til Herren.
7 Da sa Herren til Samuel: Lyd folket i alt hvad de sier til dig! For det er ikke dig de har forkastet, men det er mig de har forkastet, så jeg ikke skal være konge over dem.
8 Som de alltid har gjort fra den dag jeg førte dem op fra Egypten, til den dag idag, idet de forlot mig og tjente andre guder, således gjør de nu også mot dig.
9 Men lyd nu deres ord! Du må bare alvorlig vidne for dem og foreholde dem hvorledes han vil bære sig at den konge som kommer til å råde over dem.
10 Så sa Samuel alle Herrens ord til folket som krevde en konge av ham.
11 Han sa: Således vil han bære sig at den konge som kommer til å råde over eder: Eders sønner vil han ta og sette dem til å stelle med sin vogn og sine hester, og de skal løpe foran hans vogn,
12 Og han vil sette dem til høvdinger over tusen og høvdinger over femti og til å pløie hans akrer og høste hans avling og til å gjøre hans krigsredskaper og hans kjøretøi.
13 Eders døtre vil han ta og sette til å lage salver og til å koke og bake for ham.
14 Eders beste jorder og vingårder og oljehaver vil han ta og gi sine tjenere.
15 Og av eders akrer og eders vingårder vil han ta tiende og gi sine hoffmenn og sine tjenere.
16 Eders træler og eders trælkvinner og eders beste unge menn og eders asener vil han ta og bruke til sitt arbeid.
17 Av eders småfe vil han ta tiende, og I selv skal være hans træler.
18 Da skal I en dag rope til Herren for den konges skyld som I har kåret eder; men den dag skal Herren ikke svare eder.
19 Men folket vilde ikke høre på Samuel, de sa: Nei, vi vil ha en konge over oss.
20 Vi vil være som alle de andre folk; vår konge skal dømme oss, og han skal dra ut foran oss og føre våre kriger.
21 Da Samuel hadde hørt alle folkets ord, bar han dem frem for Herren.
22 Og Herren sa til Samuel: Lyd deres ord og sett en konge over dem! Så sa Samuel til Israels menn: Gå hjem hver til sin by!
9 Det var en mann av Benjamin som hette Kis, sønn til Abiel, sønn til Seror, sønn til Bekorat, sønn til Afiah, sønn til en benjaminitt; han var en mektig mann.
2 Han hadde en sønn som hette Saul, en ung og vakker mann; det fantes ingen mann blandt Israels barn som var vakrere enn han; han var et hode høiere enn alt folket.
3 En dag kom Kis', Sauls fars aseninner bort for ham, og Kis sa til sin sønn Saul: Ta en av drengene med dig og dra avsted og let efter aseninnene!
4 Så gikk han over Efra'im-fjellet og gjennem Salisa-bygden, men de fant dem ikke; så gikk de gjennem Sa'alim-bygden, men der var de ikke; derefter gikk han gjennem Benjamins land, men de fant dem ikke der heller.
5 Da de kom til Suf-bygden, sa Saul til drengen som var med ham: Kom, la oss gå hjem igjen! Ellers kunde min far bli urolig for oss, istedenfor å tenke på aseninnene.
6 Men han svarte ham: I denne by er det en Guds mann som det går stort ord av; alt hvad han sier, slår til. La oss nu gå dit! Han kan visst si oss noget om det vi går efter.
7 Da sa Saul til sin dreng: Men om vi nu går dit, hvad skal vi da ha med oss til mannen? Vi har ikke mere brød igjen i våre skrepper, og vi har ingen gave å gi Guds-mannen; hvor meget har vi med oss?
8 Så tok drengen igjen til orde og sa til Saul: Her har jeg hos mig en fjerdedel sekel sølv; den vil jeg gi til Guds-mannen, så sier han oss nok hvad vei vi skal gå.
9 Fordum sa folk i Israel når de gikk avsted for å få vite Guds vilje: Kom, la oss gå til seeren! For den som nu kalles profet, kaltes fordum seer.
10 Saul sa til sin dreng: Du har rett; kom, la oss gå! Så gikk de til byen hvor Guds-mannen var.
11 Da de gikk op bakken som førte til byen, møtte de nogen piker som kom ut for å hente vann, og de sa til dem: Er seeren her?
12 De svarte dem og sa: Ja, nettop nu er han her. Skynd dig nu! Idag er han kommet til byen, fordi folket idag holder offerfest på haugen.
13 Når I kommer inn i byen, finner I ham straks før han går op på haugen til måltidet; for folket går ikke til bords før han kommer, fordi han skal velsigne offeret; først derefter setter de innbudne sig til bords. Gå bare op! For nettop nu kan I treffe ham.
14 Så gikk de op til byen, og med det samme de kom inn i byen, kom Samuel ut imot dem for å gå op på haugen.
15 Men dagen før Saul kom, hadde Herren varslet Samuel og sagt:
16 På denne tid imorgen vil jeg sende en mann fra Benjamins land til dig; ham skal du salve til fyrste over mitt folk Israel, og han skal frelse mitt folk av filistrenes hånd; for jeg har sett til mitt folk, fordi deres rop er steget op til mig.
17 Da nu Samuel så Saul, sa Herren til ham: Se, det er den mann om hvem jeg har sagt til dig: Han skal styre mitt folk.
18 Så gikk Saul frem til Samuel midt i porten og sa: Si mig hvor seeren bor!
19 Samuel svarte Saul og sa: Jeg er seeren. Gå foran mig op på haugen! I skal ete med mig idag; imorgen tidlig når jeg lar dig fare, skal jeg si dig alt det du tenker på.
20 Og aseninnene som kom bort for dig idag for tre dager siden, dem skal du ikke være urolig for; de er funnet. Og hvem tilhører alt det beste i Israel om ikke dig og hele din fars hus?
21 Saul svarte og sa: Er jeg ikke en benjaminitt, hører jeg ikke til en av de minste blandt Israels stammer, og er ikke min ætt den ringeste av alle ætter i Benjamins stamme? Hvorfor taler du da således til mig?
22 Men Samuel tok Saul og hans dreng og førte dem til festsalen og lot dem sette sig øverst blandt de innbudne - det var omkring tretti menn.
23 Og Samuel sa til den mann som kokte maten: Kom hit med det stykke jeg gav dig og sa du skulde gjemme!
24 Da kom mannen frem med låret og fettet som var på det, og satte det foran Saul; og Samuel sa: Se, her er det som var gjemt, satt frem for dig; et nu! For til denne stund blev det gjemt for dig, dengang jeg sa: Jeg har innbudt folket. Så åt Saul den dag sammen med Samuel.
25 Derefter gikk de ned fra haugen og inn i byen, og han satt og talte med Saul på taket.
26 Tidlig om morgenen, med det samme det tok til å dages, kalte Samuel Saul op på taket og sa: Gjør dig rede, så vil jeg følge dig på veien. Så gjorde Saul sig rede, og de gikk ut sammen, han og Samuel.
27 Da de nu kom ned til utkanten av byen, sa Samuel til Saul: Si til drengen at han skal gå foran oss - og han gikk - men stå du nu her! Så vil jeg la dig høre hvad Gud har sagt.

7 1 So the men of Kiriath Jearim came and took up the ark(A) of the Lord. They brought it to Abinadab’s(B) house on the hill and consecrated Eleazar his son to guard the ark of the Lord. 2 The ark remained at Kiriath Jearim(C) a long time—twenty years in all.
Samuel Subdues the Philistines at Mizpah
Then all the people of Israel turned back to the Lord.(D) 3 So Samuel said to all the Israelites, “If you are returning(E) to the Lord with all your hearts, then rid(F) yourselves of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths(G) and commit(H) yourselves to the Lord and serve him only,(I) and he will deliver(J) you out of the hand of the Philistines.” 4 So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtoreths, and served the Lord only.
5 Then Samuel(K) said, “Assemble all Israel at Mizpah,(L) and I will intercede(M) with the Lord for you.” 6 When they had assembled at Mizpah,(N) they drew water and poured(O) it out before the Lord. On that day they fasted and there they confessed, “We have sinned against the Lord.” Now Samuel was serving as leader[a](P) of Israel at Mizpah.
7 When the Philistines heard that Israel had assembled at Mizpah, the rulers of the Philistines came up to attack them. When the Israelites heard of it, they were afraid(Q) because of the Philistines. 8 They said to Samuel, “Do not stop crying(R) out to the Lord our God for us, that he may rescue us from the hand of the Philistines.” 9 Then Samuel(S) took a suckling lamb and sacrificed it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. He cried out to the Lord on Israel’s behalf, and the Lord answered him.(T)
10 While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage Israel in battle. But that day the Lord thundered(U) with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic(V) that they were routed before the Israelites. 11 The men of Israel rushed out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, slaughtering them along the way to a point below Beth Kar.
12 Then Samuel took a stone(W) and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer,[b](X) saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”
13 So the Philistines were subdued(Y) and they stopped invading Israel’s territory. Throughout Samuel’s lifetime, the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines. 14 The towns from Ekron(Z) to Gath that the Philistines had captured from Israel were restored to Israel, and Israel delivered the neighboring territory from the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.(AA)
15 Samuel(AB) continued as Israel’s leader(AC) all(AD) the days of his life. 16 From year to year he went on a circuit from Bethel(AE) to Gilgal(AF) to Mizpah, judging(AG) Israel in all those places. 17 But he always went back to Ramah,(AH) where his home was, and there he also held court(AI) for Israel. And he built an altar(AJ) there to the Lord.
Israel Asks for a King
8 When Samuel grew old, he appointed(AK) his sons as Israel’s leaders.[c] 2 The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah,(AL) and they served at Beersheba.(AM) 3 But his sons(AN) did not follow his ways. They turned aside(AO) after dishonest gain and accepted bribes(AP) and perverted(AQ) justice.
4 So all the elders(AR) of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.(AS) 5 They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king(AT) to lead[d](AU) us, such as all the other nations(AV) have.”
6 But when they said, “Give us a king(AW) to lead us,” this displeased(AX) Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord told him: “Listen(AY) to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected,(AZ) but they have rejected me as their king.(BA) 8 As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking(BB) me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know(BC) what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”
10 Samuel told(BD) all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. 11 He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take(BE) your sons and make them serve(BF) with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.(BG) 12 Some he will assign to be commanders(BH) of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your(BI) fields and vineyards(BJ) and olive groves and give them to his attendants.(BK) 15 He will take a tenth(BL) of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. 16 Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle[e] and donkeys he will take for his own use. 17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. 18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer(BM) you in that day.(BN)”
19 But the people refused(BO) to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want(BP) a king(BQ) over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations,(BR) with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”
21 When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated(BS) it before the Lord. 22 The Lord answered, “Listen(BT) to them and give them a king.”
Then Samuel said to the Israelites, “Everyone go back to your own town.”
Samuel Anoints Saul
9 There was a Benjamite,(BU) a man of standing,(BV) whose name was Kish(BW) son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bekorath, the son of Aphiah of Benjamin. 2 Kish had a son named Saul, as handsome(BX) a young man as could be found(BY) anywhere in Israel, and he was a head taller(BZ) than anyone else.
3 Now the donkeys(CA) belonging to Saul’s father Kish were lost, and Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants with you and go and look for the donkeys.” 4 So he passed through the hill(CB) country of Ephraim and through the area around Shalisha,(CC) but they did not find them. They went on into the district of Shaalim, but the donkeys(CD) were not there. Then he passed through the territory of Benjamin, but they did not find them.
5 When they reached the district of Zuph,(CE) Saul said to the servant who was with him, “Come, let’s go back, or my father will stop thinking about the donkeys and start worrying(CF) about us.”
6 But the servant replied, “Look, in this town there is a man of God;(CG) he is highly respected, and everything(CH) he says comes true. Let’s go there now. Perhaps he will tell us what way to take.”
7 Saul said to his servant, “If we go, what can we give the man? The food in our sacks is gone. We have no gift(CI) to take to the man of God. What do we have?”
8 The servant answered him again. “Look,” he said, “I have a quarter of a shekel[f] of silver. I will give it to the man of God so that he will tell us what way to take.” 9 (Formerly in Israel, if someone went to inquire(CJ) of God, they would say, “Come, let us go to the seer,” because the prophet of today used to be called a seer.)(CK)
10 “Good,” Saul said to his servant. “Come, let’s go.” So they set out for the town where the man of God was.
11 As they were going up the hill to the town, they met some young women coming out to draw(CL) water, and they asked them, “Is the seer here?”
12 “He is,” they answered. “He’s ahead of you. Hurry now; he has just come to our town today, for the people have a sacrifice(CM) at the high place.(CN) 13 As soon as you enter the town, you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. The people will not begin eating until he comes, because he must bless(CO) the sacrifice; afterward, those who are invited will eat. Go up now; you should find him about this time.”
14 They went up to the town, and as they were entering it, there was Samuel, coming toward them on his way up to the high place.
15 Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed this to Samuel: 16 “About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint(CP) him ruler(CQ) over my people Israel; he will deliver(CR) them from the hand of the Philistines.(CS) I have looked on my people, for their cry(CT) has reached me.”
17 When Samuel caught sight of Saul, the Lord said to him, “This(CU) is the man I spoke to you about; he will govern my people.”
18 Saul approached Samuel in the gateway and asked, “Would you please tell me where the seer’s house is?”
19 “I am the seer,” Samuel replied. “Go up ahead of me to the high place, for today you are to eat with me, and in the morning I will send you on your way and will tell you all that is in your heart. 20 As for the donkeys(CV) you lost three days ago, do not worry about them; they have been found. And to whom is all the desire(CW) of Israel turned, if not to you and your whole family line?”
21 Saul answered, “But am I not a Benjamite, from the smallest tribe(CX) of Israel, and is not my clan the least(CY) of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin?(CZ) Why do you say such a thing to me?”
22 Then Samuel brought Saul and his servant into the hall and seated them at the head of those who were invited—about thirty in number. 23 Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the piece of meat I gave you, the one I told you to lay aside.”
24 So the cook took up the thigh(DA) with what was on it and set it in front of Saul. Samuel said, “Here is what has been kept for you. Eat, because it was set aside for you for this occasion from the time I said, ‘I have invited guests.’” And Saul dined with Samuel that day.
25 After they came down from the high place to the town, Samuel talked with Saul on the roof(DB) of his house. 26 They rose about daybreak, and Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Get ready, and I will send you on your way.” When Saul got ready, he and Samuel went outside together. 27 As they were going down to the edge of the town, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us”—and the servant did so—“but you stay here for a while, so that I may give you a message from God.”
