Concern for Their Faith

Therefore, when we could no longer endure it, we thought it good to be left in Athens alone, and sent (A)Timothy, our brother and minister of God, and our fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you and encourage you concerning your faith, (B)that no one should be shaken by these afflictions; for you yourselves know that (C)we are appointed to this. (D)For, in fact, we told you before when we were with you that we would suffer tribulation, just as it happened, and you know. For this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to know your faith, (E)lest by some means the tempter had tempted you, and (F)our labor might be in vain.

So when we could stand it no longer,(A) we thought it best to be left by ourselves in Athens.(B) We sent Timothy,(C) who is our brother and co-worker(D) in God’s service in spreading the gospel of Christ,(E) to strengthen and encourage you in your faith, so that no one would be unsettled by these trials.(F) For you know quite well that we are destined for them.(G) In fact, when we were with you, we kept telling you that we would be persecuted. And it turned out that way, as you well know.(H) For this reason, when I could stand it no longer,(I) I sent to find out about your faith.(J) I was afraid that in some way the tempter(K) had tempted you and that our labors might have been in vain.(L)

Walk in Christ’s Commandments

I (A)rejoiced greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, as we received commandment from the Father. And now I plead with you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we have had from the beginning: (B)that we love one another. (C)This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that (D)as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.

Beware of Antichrist Deceivers

For (E)many deceivers have gone out into the world (F)who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. (G)This is a deceiver and an antichrist. (H)Look to yourselves, (I)that [a]we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward.

(J)Whoever [b]transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and (K)does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; 11 for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.

It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth,(A) just as the Father commanded us. And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning.(B) I ask that we love one another. And this is love:(C) that we walk in obedience to his commands.(D) As you have heard from the beginning,(E) his command is that you walk in love.

I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ(F) as coming in the flesh,(G) have gone out into the world.(H) Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.(I) Watch out that you do not lose what we[a] have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully.(J) Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ(K) does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.(L) 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them.(M) 11 Anyone who welcomes them shares(N) in their wicked work.
