¹⁵ For the Lord will strike Israel so that they will^[a] shake as a reed shakes in water. He will uproot Israel from this good soil that he gave to their ancestors.^(A) He will scatter them beyond the Euphrates^(B) because they made their Asherah poles, angering the Lord.^(C)

²³ They also built for themselves high places,^(A) sacred pillars,^(B) and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree;

¹³ He also^(A) removed his grandmother^[a] Maacah from being queen mother because she had made an obscene image of Asherah. Asa chopped down her obscene image and burned it^(B) in the Kidron Valley.^(C)

⁴ He removed the high places, shattered the sacred pillars, and cut down the Asherah poles.^(A) He broke into pieces the bronze snake that Moses made,^(B) for until then the Israelites were burning incense to it. It was called Nehushtan.^[a]
