Warnings Against Denying the Son

18 Dear children, this is the last hour;(A) and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming,(B) even now many antichrists have come.(C) This is how we know it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us,(D) but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.(E)

20 But you have an anointing(F) from the Holy One,(G) and all of you know the truth.[a](H) 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it(I) and because no lie comes from the truth. 22 Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son.(J) 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.(K)

24 As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning(L) remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.(M) 25 And this is what he promised us—eternal life.(N)

26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.(O)

  1. 1 John 2:20 Some manuscripts and you know all things

18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.

21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.

23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.

24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.

25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.

26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.

Deceptions of the Last Hour

18 (A)Little children, (B)it is the last hour; and as you have heard that (C)the[a] Antichrist is coming, (D)even now many antichrists have come, by which we know (E)that it is the last hour. 19 (F)They went out from us, but they were not of us; for (G)if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out (H)that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.

20 But (I)you have an anointing (J)from the Holy One, and (K)you[b] know all things. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

22 (L)Who is a liar but he who denies that (M)Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son. 23 (N)Whoever denies the Son does not have the (O)Father either; (P)he who acknowledges the Son has the Father also.

Let Truth Abide in You

24 Therefore let that abide in you (Q)which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, (R)you also will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 (S)And this is the promise that He has promised us—eternal life.

26 These things I have written to you concerning those who try to [c]deceive you.

On Denying the Incarnation

Dear friends,(A) do not believe every spirit,(B) but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.(C) This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh(D) is from God,(E) but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist,(F) which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.(G)

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

Love for God and One Another

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but (A)test the spirits, whether they are of God; because (B)many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: (C)Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess [a]that Jesus [b]Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.

Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.(A)

This is the one who came by water and blood(B)—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.(C) For there are three(D) that testify: the[a] Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. We accept human testimony,(E) but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God,(F) which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony.(G) Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar,(H) because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life,(I) and this life is in his Son.(J) 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.(K)

  1. 1 John 5:8 Late manuscripts of the Vulgate testify in heaven: the Father, the Word and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one. And there are three that testify on earth: the (not found in any Greek manuscript before the fourteenth century)

Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.

For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.

10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

The Certainty of God’s Witness

This is He who came (B)by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. (C)And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear witness [a]in heaven: the Father, (D)the Word, and the Holy Spirit; (E)and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: (F)the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.

If we receive (G)the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; (H)for this is the witness of [b]God which He has testified of His Son. 10 He who believes in the Son of God (I)has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God (J)has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son. 11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 (K)He who has the Son has [c]life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
