Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.

13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.

The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God;(A) it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh(B) cannot please God.

You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh(C) but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.(D) And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,(E) they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you,(F) then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life[a] because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead(G) is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies(H) because of[b] his Spirit who lives in you.

12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.(I) 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die;(J) but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body,(K) you will live.(L)

14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God(M) are the children of God.(N) 15 The Spirit(O) you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again;(P) rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.[c] And by him we cry, “Abba,[d] Father.”(Q) 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit(R) that we are God’s children.(S) 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs(T)—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings(U) in order that we may also share in his glory.(V)

Present Suffering and Future Glory

18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.(W) 19 For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God(X) to be revealed.
