³Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land.

⁴And the Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and pitched in Shunem: and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they pitched in Gilboa.

⁵And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled.

⁶And when Saul enquired of the Lord, the Lord answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.

Saul and the Medium at Endor

³Now Samuel was dead,^(A) and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in his own town of Ramah.^(B) Saul had expelled^(C) the mediums and spiritists^(D) from the land.

⁴The Philistines assembled and came and set up camp at Shunem,^(E) while Saul gathered all Israel and set up camp at Gilboa.^(F) ⁵When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror^(G) filled his heart. ⁶He inquired^(H) of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him by dreams^(I) or Urim^(J) or prophets.^(K)

⁴Then the Philistines gathered together, and came and encamped at ^(E)Shunem. So Saul gathered all Israel together, and they encamped at ^(F)Gilboa. ⁵When Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was ^(G)afraid, and his heart trembled greatly. ⁶And when Saul inquired of the Lord, ^(H)the Lord did not answer him, either by ^(I)dreams or ^(J)by Urim or by the prophets.
