15 Samuel sa til Saul: Det var mig Herren sendte for å salve dig til konge over hans folk, over Israel; så lyd nu Herrens ord!
2 Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Jeg vil hjemsøke Amalek for det han gjorde mot Israel, at han la sig i veien for ham da han drog op fra Egypten.
3 Gå nu avsted og slå Amalek, og slå med bann alt hvad hans er; spar ham ikke, men drep både mann og kvinne, både barn og diebarn, både okse og får, både kamel og asen.
4 Så kalte Saul folket til våben og mønstret dem i Tela'im; det var to hundre tusen mann fotfolk og ti tusen mann fra Juda.
5 Da Saul kom til amalekittenes by, la han et bakhold i dalen.
6 Og Saul sa til kenittene: Gå bort, skill eder fra amalekittene og dra ned, så jeg ikke skal ødelegge eder sammen med dem! For I gjorde vel imot alle Israels barn da de drog op fra Egypten. Så skilte kenittene lag med amalekittene.
7 Saul slo amalekittene og forfulgte dem fra Havila til bortimot Sur, som ligger østenfor Egypten.
8 Og han tok Agag, Amaleks konge, levende til fange, og alt folket slo han med bann og drepte dem med sverdets egg.
9 Men Saul og folket sparte Agag og det beste og det næstbeste av småfeet og storfeet og lammene - alt som så godt ut - og vilde ikke slå dem med bann; men alt det fe som var ringe og usselt, det slo de med bann.
10 Da kom Herrens ord til Samuel, og det lød således:
11 Jeg angrer at jeg har gjort Saul til konge; for han har vendt sig bort fra mig og ikke holdt sig efter mine ord. Da optendtes Samuels vrede, og han ropte til Herren hele natten.
12 Morgenen efter stod Samuel tidlig op for å møte Saul; da kom nogen og sa til Samuel: Saul er kommet til Karmel, og der har han reist sig et minnesmerke; siden vendte han om og drog videre ned til Gilgal.
13 Da nu Samuel kom til Saul, sa Saul til ham: Velsignet være du av Herren! Jeg har holdt mig efter Herrens ord.
14 Men Samuel sa: Hvad er da dette for en bræken av småfe som lyder for mine ører, og hvad er det for brøl av storfe jeg hører?
15 Saul svarte: De har ført dem med fra amalekittene; for folket sparte det beste av småfeet og av storfeet for å ofre det til Herren din Gud; men resten har vi slått med bann.
16 Da sa Samuel til Saul: Hold op, så vil jeg forkynne dig hvad Herren har talt til mig inatt! Han sa til ham: Tal!
17 Samuel sa: Da du var ringe i dine egne øine, blev du hode for Israels stammer, og Herren salvet dig til konge over Israel.
18 Og Herren sendte dig avsted og sa: Gå og slå disse syndere, amalekittene, med bann og strid mot dem til du får gjort ende på dem!
19 Hvorfor lød du da ikke Herrens ord, men kastet dig over hærfanget og gjorde hvad ondt var i Herrens øine?
20 Da sa Saul til Samuel: Jeg har lydt Herrens ord og har gått den vei Herren sendte mig; jeg har ført Agag, Amaleks konge, hit og slått Amalek med bann.
21 Men folket tok av hærfanget småfe og storfe, det ypperste av det bannlyste, for å ofre det til Herren din Gud i Gilgal.
22 Da sa Samuel: Har vel Herren like så meget behag i brennoffer og slaktoffer som i lydighet mot Herrens ord? Nei, lydighet er bedre enn slaktoffer, hørsomhet bedre enn fettet av værer;
23 for gjenstridighet er ikke bedre enn trolldoms-synd, og trossighet er som avgudsdyrkelse. Fordi du har forkastet Herrens ord, har han forkastet dig, så du ikke skal være konge.
24 Da sa Saul til Samuel: Jeg har syndet; jeg har overtrådt Herrens bud og dine ord; for jeg var redd folket og gav efter for dem.
25 Men forlat mig nu min synd og vend tilbake med mig, forat jeg kan tilbede Herren!
26 Samuel svarte Saul: Jeg vil ikke vende tilbake med dig; for du har forkastet Herrens ord, og så har Herren forkastet dig, så du ikke skal være konge over Israel.
27 Dermed vendte Samuel sig og vilde gå. Men Saul grep fatt i kanten av hans kappe, så den blev revet av.
28 Da sa Samuel til ham: Herren har idag revet kongedømmet over Israel fra dig og gitt det til en annen, som er bedre enn du.
29 Og Israels trofaste Gud lyver ikke og angrer ikke; for han er ikke et menneske, så han skulde angre.
30 Saul svarte: Jeg har syndet, men vis mig allikevel nu ære for mitt folks eldste og for Israel og vend tilbake med mig! Så vil jeg tilbede Herren din Gud.
31 Da fulgte Samuel Saul tilbake, og Saul tilbad Herren.
32 Så sa Samuel: Før Agag, Amaleks konge, hit til mig! Glad i hu gikk Agag bort til ham, og Agag sa: Visselig, dødens bitterhet er veket bort.
33 Men Samuel sa: Likesom ditt sverd har gjort kvinner barnløse, så skal nu din mor bli barnløs fremfor andre kvinner. Så hugg Samuel Agag ned for Herrens åsyn i Gilgal.
34 Derefter drog Samuel til Rama, men Saul fór op til sitt hus i Sauls Gibea.
35 Og Samuel så ikke Saul mere helt til sin dødsdag, for Samuel sørget over Saul. Men Herren angret at han hadde gjort Saul til konge over Israel.
16 Herren sa til Samuel: Hvor lenge vil du sørge over Saul, enda jeg har forkastet ham, så han ikke skal være konge over Israel? Fyll ditt horn med olje og gå avsted! Jeg sender dig til betlehemitten Isai, for blandt hans sønner har jeg utsett mig en til konge.
2 Men Samuel sa: Hvorledes kan jeg gjøre slik en ferd? Får Saul høre det, slår han mig ihjel. Da sa Herren: Ta med dig en kalv av buskapen og si: Jeg er kommet for å ofre til Herren.
3 Og innbyd Isai til ofringen, så vil jeg la dig få vite hvad du skal gjøre, og du skal salve for mig den jeg sier dig.
4 Samuel gjorde som Herren sa. Da han kom til Betlehem, gikk byens eldste ham skjelvende i møte og sa: Kommer du med fred?
5 Han svarte: Ja, jeg kommer med fred; jeg er kommet for å ofre til Herren; hellige eder og kom med mig til ofringen! Og han lot Isai og hans sønner hellige sig og innbød dem til ofringen.
6 Da de kom, og han fikk se Eliab, tenkte han: Visselig står her for Herren hans salvede.
7 Men Herren sa til Samuel: Se ikke på hans utseende og på hans høie vekst! For jeg har forkastet ham; jeg ser ikke på hvad mennesket ser på, for mennesket ser på det utvortes, men Herren ser på hjertet.
8 Så kalte Isai på Abinadab og lot ham gå frem for Samuel; men han sa: Heller ikke ham har Herren utvalgt.
9 Så lot Isai Samma gå frem; men han sa: Heller ikke ham har Herren utvalgt.
10 Således lot Isai syv sønner gå frem for Samuel; men Samuel sa til Isai: Herren har ikke utvalgt nogen av disse.
11 Og Samuel sa til Isai: Var dette alle de gutter du har? Han svarte: Ennu er den yngste tilbake; han vokter småfeet. Da sa Samuel til Isai: Send bud efter ham! Vi setter oss ikke til bords før han kommer.
12 Så sendte han bud efter ham. Han var rødkinnet og hadde vakre øine og var fager av utseende. Da sa Herren: Stå op og salv ham! For han er det.
13 Da tok Samuel oljehornet og salvet ham midt iblandt hans brødre, og Herrens Ånd kom over David fra den dag og fremdeles. Så brøt Samuel op og gikk til Rama.
14 Men Herrens Ånd vek fra Saul, og en ond ånd fra Herren forferdet ham.
15 Da sa Sauls tjenere til ham: Vi ser at en ond ånd fra Gud forferder dig.
16 Herre, byd bare dine tjenere som står for ditt ansikt, å opsøke en mann som er kyndig i å spille på harpe. Når da en ond ånd fra Gud kommer over dig, skal han spille på sin harpe; da vil det bli bedre med dig.
17 Da sa Saul til sine tjenere: Ja, finn mig en mann som spiller godt, og før ham hit til mig!
18 En av de unge menn svarte og sa: Jeg har sett en sønn av betlehemitten Isai som er kyndig i å spille, en djerv mann og en stridsmann, god til å tale for sig og en vakker mann, og Herren er med ham.
19 Da sendte Saul bud til Isai og lot si: Send hit til mig din sønn David, han som er med småfeet!
20 Så tok Isai et asen, som han lesste brød på, og en skinnsekk med vin og et kje og sendte det med sin sønn David til Saul.
21 Således kom David til Saul, og han blev i hans tjeneste; og Saul fikk ham meget kjær, og han blev hans våbensvenn.
22 Og Saul sendte bud til Isai og lot si: Kjære, la David bli i min tjeneste! For han har funnet nåde for mine øine.
23 Når da den onde ånd fra Gud kom over Saul, tok David harpen og spilte på den, og Saul fikk lindring, og det blev bedre med ham, og den onde ånd vek fra ham.

The Lord Rejects Saul as King
15 Samuel said to Saul, “I am the one the Lord sent to anoint(A) you king over his people Israel; so listen now to the message from the Lord. 2 This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I will punish the Amalekites(B) for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. 3 Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally(C) destroy[a] all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’”
4 So Saul summoned the men and mustered them at Telaim—two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand from Judah. 5 Saul went to the city of Amalek and set an ambush in the ravine. 6 Then he said to the Kenites,(D) “Go away, leave the Amalekites so that I do not destroy you along with them; for you showed kindness to all the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites moved away from the Amalekites.
7 Then Saul attacked the Amalekites(E) all the way from Havilah to Shur,(F) near the eastern border of Egypt. 8 He took Agag(G) king of the Amalekites alive,(H) and all his people he totally destroyed with the sword. 9 But Saul and the army spared(I) Agag and the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves[b] and lambs—everything that was good. These they were unwilling to destroy completely, but everything that was despised and weak they totally destroyed.
10 Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel: 11 “I regret(J) that I have made Saul king, because he has turned(K) away from me and has not carried out my instructions.”(L) Samuel was angry,(M) and he cried out to the Lord all that night.
12 Early in the morning Samuel got up and went to meet Saul, but he was told, “Saul has gone to Carmel.(N) There he has set up a monument(O) in his own honor and has turned and gone on down to Gilgal.”
13 When Samuel reached him, Saul said, “The Lord bless you! I have carried out the Lord’s instructions.”
14 But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears? What is this lowing of cattle that I hear?”
15 Saul answered, “The soldiers brought them from the Amalekites; they spared the best of the sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the Lord your God, but we totally destroyed the rest.”
16 “Enough!” Samuel said to Saul. “Let me tell you what the Lord said to me last night.”
“Tell me,” Saul replied.
17 Samuel said, “Although you were once small(P) in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel. 18 And he sent you on a mission, saying, ‘Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; wage war against them until you have wiped them out.’ 19 Why did you not obey the Lord? Why did you pounce on the plunder(Q) and do evil in the eyes of the Lord?”
20 “But I did obey(R) the Lord,” Saul said. “I went on the mission the Lord assigned me. I completely destroyed the Amalekites and brought back Agag their king. 21 The soldiers took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, in order to sacrifice them to the Lord your God at Gilgal.”
22 But Samuel replied:
“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the Lord?
To obey is better than sacrifice,(S)
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination,(T)
and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.
Because you have rejected(U) the word of the Lord,
he has rejected you as king.”
24 Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned.(V) I violated(W) the Lord’s command and your instructions. I was afraid(X) of the men and so I gave in to them. 25 Now I beg you, forgive(Y) my sin and come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord.”
26 But Samuel said to him, “I will not go back with you. You have rejected(Z) the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you as king over Israel!”
27 As Samuel turned to leave, Saul caught hold of the hem of his robe,(AA) and it tore.(AB) 28 Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn(AC) the kingdom(AD) of Israel from you today and has given it to one of your neighbors—to one better than you.(AE) 29 He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie(AF) or change(AG) his mind; for he is not a human being, that he should change his mind.”
30 Saul replied, “I have sinned.(AH) But please honor(AI) me before the elders of my people and before Israel; come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord your God.” 31 So Samuel went back with Saul, and Saul worshiped the Lord.
32 Then Samuel said, “Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites.”
Agag came to him in chains.[c] And he thought, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”
33 But Samuel said,
“As your sword has made women childless,
so will your mother be childless among women.”(AJ)
And Samuel put Agag to death before the Lord at Gilgal.
34 Then Samuel left for Ramah,(AK) but Saul went up to his home in Gibeah(AL) of Saul. 35 Until the day Samuel(AM) died, he did not go to see Saul again, though Samuel mourned(AN) for him. And the Lord regretted(AO) that he had made Saul king over Israel.
Samuel Anoints David
16 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn(AP) for Saul, since I have rejected(AQ) him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil(AR) and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse(AS) of Bethlehem. I have chosen(AT) one of his sons to be king.”
2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.”
The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show(AU) you what to do. You are to anoint(AV) for me the one I indicate.”
4 Samuel did what the Lord said. When he arrived at Bethlehem,(AW) the elders of the town trembled(AX) when they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?(AY)”
5 Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate(AZ) yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab(BA) and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance,(BB) but the Lord looks at the heart.”(BC)
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab(BD) and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” 9 Jesse then had Shammah(BE) pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all(BF) the sons you have?”
“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.”(BG)
Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”
12 So he(BH) sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome(BI) features.
Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”
13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed(BJ) him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord(BK) came powerfully upon David.(BL) Samuel then went to Ramah.
David in Saul’s Service
14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed(BM) from Saul, and an evil[d] spirit(BN) from the Lord tormented him.(BO)
15 Saul’s attendants said to him, “See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you. 16 Let our lord command his servants here to search for someone who can play the lyre.(BP) He will play when the evil spirit from God comes on you, and you will feel better.”
17 So Saul said to his attendants, “Find someone who plays well and bring him to me.”
18 One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse(BQ) of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is a brave man and a warrior.(BR) He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the Lord is with(BS) him.”
19 Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.(BT)” 20 So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread,(BU) a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them with his son David to Saul.
21 David came to Saul and entered his service.(BV) Saul liked him very much, and David became one of his armor-bearers. 22 Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, “Allow David to remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.”
23 Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit(BW) would leave him.
