15 Da kom Guds Ånd over Asarja, Odeds sønn,
2 og han gikk ut mot Asa og sa til ham: Hør på mig, Asa og hele Juda og Benjamin! Herren er med eder når I er med ham, og dersom I søker ham, skal han la sig finne av eder; men dersom I forlater ham, skal han forlate eder.
3 I lange tider var Israel uten sann Gud og uten prest som lærte dem, og uten lov.
4 Da vendte de i sin trengsel om til Herren, Israels Gud, og søkte ham, og han lot sig finne av dem.
5 Og i de tider kunde ingen ferdes trygt, hverken ute eller hjemme; for det rådet stor uro blandt alle dem som bodde her i landene.
6 Da støtte folk mot folk og by mot by, så de knustes; for Gud voldte uro iblandt dem med alle slags trengsel.
7 Men vær I frimodige og la ikke eders hender synke! I skal få lønn for eders gjerning.
8 Da Asa hørte disse ord og denne profeti av profeten Oded, fattet han mot og sørget for å få bort de vederstyggelige avgudsbilleder i hele Judas og Benjamins land og i de byer han hadde inntatt i Efra'im-fjellene, og han satte i stand Herrens alter, som stod foran Herrens forhall.
9 Så samlet han hele Juda og Benjamin og de fremmede fra Efra'im og Manasse og Simeon som bodde iblandt dem; for mange gikk over til ham fra Israel, da de så at Herren, hans Gud, var med ham.
10 I den tredje måned i det femtende år av Asas regjering samlet de sig i Jerusalem
11 Og ofret samme dag til Herren syv hundre stykker storfe og syv tusen stykker småfe av det hærfang de hadde ført med sig.
12 Og de gjorde en pakt om at de vilde søke Herren, sine fedres Gud, av alt sitt hjerte og av all sin sjel,
13 og at hver den som ikke søkte Herren, Israels Gud, skulde drepes, enten det var en liten eller en stor, mann eller kvinne.
14 Og de svor Herren troskap med høi røst og jubelrop og under trompeters og basuners lyd.
15 Og hele Juda gledet sig over eden; for av alt sitt hjerte hadde de svoret den, og med all sin vilje søkte de ham, og han lot sig finne av dem, og Herren gav dem ro rundt omkring.
16 Kong Asa avsatte endog sin mor Ma'aka fra hennes verdighet, fordi hun hadde gjort et gruelig avgudsbillede for Astarte; Asa hugg hennes gruelige avgudsbillede ned og knuste det og brente det i Kidrons dal.
17 Men offerhaugene blev ikke nedlagt i Israel; dog var Asas hjerte helt med Herren så lenge han levde.
18 Han lot de ting hans far hadde helliget, og dem han selv hadde helliget, føre inn i Guds hus, både sølv og gull og andre ting.
19 Og det var ingen krig før i det fem og trettiende år av Asas regjering.
16 I det seks og trettiende år av Asas regjering drog Israels konge Baesa op mot Juda og bygget festningsverker i Rama for å hindre enhver fra å dra fra eller til Judas konge Asa.
2 Da tok Asa sølv og gull ut av skattkammerne i Herrens hus og kongens hus og sendte det til kongen i Syria Benhadad, som bodde i Damaskus, med de ord:
3 Mellem mig og dig er det jo et forbund, som det var mellem min far og din far. Her sender jeg dig sølv og gull; bryt nu ditt forbund med Baesa, Israels konge, så han må dra bort fra mig!
4 Benhadad lød kong Asa og sendte sine hærførere mot Israels byer, og de inntok Ijon og Dan og Abel-Ma'im og alle forrådshusene i Naftalis byer.
5 Da Baesa hørte dette, holdt han op med å bygge festningsverker i Rama og opgav dette arbeid.
6 Men kong Asa tok hele Juda med sig, og de førte bort stenene og tømmeret som Baesa hadde brukt til festningsarbeidet i Rama, og bygget med det Geba og Mispa om til festninger.
7 På den tid kom seeren Hanani til Judas konge Asa og sa til ham: Fordi du satte din lit til kongen i Syria og ikke til Herren din Gud, derfor er syrerkongens hær sloppet ut av dine hender.
8 Var ikke etioperne og libyerne en stor hær med stridsvogner og hestfolk i stor mengde? Men fordi du dengang satte din lit til Herren, gav han dem i din hånd.
9 For Herrens øine farer over all jorden forat han med sin kraft kan støtte dem hvis hjerte er helt med ham. Du har båret dig uforstandig at i dette; for fra nu av skal du alltid ha krig.
10 Men Asa harmedes på seeren og satte ham i fangehuset; så vred var han på ham for dette. På samme tid for han også hårdt frem mot andre av folket.
11 Hvad som er å fortelle om Asa, både i hans første og i hans senere dager, det er opskrevet i boken om Judas og Israels konger.
12 I sin regjerings ni og trettiende år blev Asa syk i føttene, og hans sykdom blev verre og verre; men endog i sin sykdom søkte han ikke Herren, men bare lægene.
13 Og Asa la sig til hvile hos sine fedre og døde i sin regjerings en og firtiende år.
14 De begravde ham i det gravsted som han hadde latt hugge ut for sig i Davids stad, og la ham på et leie som var fylt med krydderier av forskjellige slag, tillaget slik som det gjøres av dem som lager salve; og de brente et veldig bål til ære for ham.

Asa’s Reform(A)
15 The Spirit of God came on(B) Azariah son of Oded. 2 He went out to meet Asa and said to him, “Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. The Lord is with you(C) when you are with him.(D) If you seek(E) him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you.(F) 3 For a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach(G) and without the law.(H) 4 But in their distress they turned to the Lord, the God of Israel, and sought him,(I) and he was found by them. 5 In those days it was not safe to travel about,(J) for all the inhabitants of the lands were in great turmoil. 6 One nation was being crushed by another and one city by another,(K) because God was troubling them with every kind of distress. 7 But as for you, be strong(L) and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.”(M)
8 When Asa heard these words and the prophecy of Azariah son of[a] Oded the prophet, he took courage. He removed the detestable idols(N) from the whole land of Judah and Benjamin and from the towns he had captured(O) in the hills of Ephraim. He repaired the altar(P) of the Lord that was in front of the portico of the Lord’s temple.
9 Then he assembled all Judah and Benjamin and the people from Ephraim, Manasseh and Simeon who had settled among them, for large numbers(Q) had come over to him from Israel when they saw that the Lord his God was with him.
10 They assembled at Jerusalem in the third month(R) of the fifteenth year of Asa’s reign. 11 At that time they sacrificed to the Lord seven hundred head of cattle and seven thousand sheep and goats from the plunder(S) they had brought back. 12 They entered into a covenant(T) to seek the Lord,(U) the God of their ancestors, with all their heart and soul. 13 All who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, were to be put to death,(V) whether small or great, man or woman. 14 They took an oath to the Lord with loud acclamation, with shouting and with trumpets and horns. 15 All Judah rejoiced about the oath because they had sworn it wholeheartedly. They sought God(W) eagerly, and he was found by them. So the Lord gave them rest(X) on every side.
16 King Asa also deposed his grandmother Maakah(Y) from her position as queen mother,(Z) because she had made a repulsive image for the worship of Asherah.(AA) Asa cut it down, broke it up and burned it in the Kidron Valley.(AB) 17 Although he did not remove the high places from Israel, Asa’s heart was fully committed to the Lord all his life. 18 He brought into the temple of God the silver and gold and the articles that he and his father had dedicated.(AC)
19 There was no more war until the thirty-fifth year of Asa’s reign.
Asa’s Last Years(AD)(AE)
16 In the thirty-sixth year of Asa’s reign Baasha(AF) king of Israel went up against Judah and fortified Ramah to prevent anyone from leaving or entering the territory of Asa king of Judah.
2 Asa then took the silver and gold out of the treasuries of the Lord’s temple and of his own palace and sent it to Ben-Hadad king of Aram, who was ruling in Damascus.(AG) 3 “Let there be a treaty(AH) between me and you,” he said, “as there was between my father and your father. See, I am sending you silver and gold. Now break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so he will withdraw from me.”
4 Ben-Hadad agreed with King Asa and sent the commanders of his forces against the towns of Israel. They conquered Ijon, Dan, Abel Maim[b] and all the store cities of Naphtali.(AI) 5 When Baasha heard this, he stopped building Ramah and abandoned his work. 6 Then King Asa brought all the men of Judah, and they carried away from Ramah the stones and timber Baasha had been using. With them he built up Geba and Mizpah.(AJ)
7 At that time Hanani(AK) the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him: “Because you relied(AL) on the king of Aram and not on the Lord your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your hand. 8 Were not the Cushites[c](AM) and Libyans a mighty army with great numbers(AN) of chariots and horsemen[d]? Yet when you relied on the Lord, he delivered(AO) them into your hand. 9 For the eyes(AP) of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a foolish(AQ) thing, and from now on you will be at war.(AR)”
10 Asa was angry with the seer because of this; he was so enraged that he put him in prison.(AS) At the same time Asa brutally oppressed some of the people.
11 The events of Asa’s reign, from beginning to end, are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 12 In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa was afflicted(AT) with a disease in his feet. Though his disease was severe, even in his illness he did not seek(AU) help from the Lord,(AV) but only from the physicians. 13 Then in the forty-first year of his reign Asa died and rested with his ancestors. 14 They buried him in the tomb that he had cut out for himself(AW) in the City of David. They laid him on a bier covered with spices and various blended perfumes,(AX) and they made a huge fire(AY) in his honor.
