(A) Our bodies are like tents that we live in here on earth. But when these tents are destroyed, we know that God will give each of us a place to live. These homes will not be buildings someone has made, but they are in heaven and will last forever. While we are here on earth, we sigh because we want to live in that heavenly home. We want to put it on like clothes and not be naked.

These tents we now live in are like a heavy burden, and we groan. But we don't do this just because we want to leave these bodies that will die. It is because we want to change them for bodies that will never die. God is the one who makes all this possible. He has given us his Spirit to make us certain he will do it. So always be cheerful!

As long as we are in these bodies, we are away from the Lord. But we live by faith, not by what we see. We should be cheerful, because we would rather leave these bodies and be at home with the Lord. But whether we are at home with the Lord or away from him, we still try our best to please him. 10 (B) After all, Christ will judge each of us for the good or the bad that we do while living in these bodies.

Bringing People to God

11 We know what it means to respect the Lord, and we encourage everyone to turn to him. God himself knows what we are like, and I hope you also know what kind of people we are. 12 We are not trying once more to brag about ourselves. But we want you to be proud of us, when you are with those who are not sincere and brag about what others think of them.

13 If we seem out of our minds, it is between God and us. But if we are in our right minds, it is for your good. 14 We are ruled by Christ's love for us. We are certain that if one person died for everyone else, then all of us have died. 15 And Christ did die for all of us. He died so we would no longer live for ourselves, but for the one who died and was raised to life for us.

16 We are careful not to judge people by what they seem to be, though we once judged Christ in this way. 17 Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new. 18 God has done it all! He sent Christ to make peace between himself and us, and he has given us the work of making peace between himself and others.

19 What we mean is that God was in Christ, offering peace and forgiveness to the people of this world. And he has given us the work of sharing his message about peace. 20 We were sent to speak for Christ, and God is begging you to listen to our message. We speak for Christ and sincerely ask you to make peace with God. 21 Christ never sinned! But God treated him as a sinner, so Christ could make us acceptable to God.

We work together with God, and we beg you to make good use of God's gift of undeserved grace. (C) In the Scriptures God says,

“When the time came,
    I listened to you,
and when you needed help,
    I came to save you.”

That time has come. This is the day for you to be saved.

We don't want anyone to find fault with our work, and so we try hard not to cause problems. But in everything and in every way we show we truly are God's servants. We have always been patient, though we have had a lot of trouble, suffering, and hard times. (D) We have been beaten, put in jail, and hurt in riots. We have worked hard and have gone without sleep or food. But we have kept ourselves pure and have been understanding, patient, and kind. The Holy Spirit has been with us, and our love has been real. We have spoken the truth, and God's power has worked in us. In all our struggles we have said and done only what is right.

Whether we were honored or dishonored or praised or cursed, we always told the truth about ourselves. But some people said we did not. We are unknown to others, but well known to you. We seem to be dying, and yet we are still alive. We have been punished, but never killed, 10 and we are always happy, even in times of suffering. Although we are poor, we have made many people rich. And though we own nothing, everything is ours.

11 Friends in Corinth, we are telling the truth when we say there is room in our hearts for you. 12 We are not holding back on our love for you, but you are holding back on your love for us. 13 I speak to you as I would speak to my own children. Please make room in your hearts for us.

The Temple of the Living God

14 Stay away from people who are not followers of the Lord! Can someone who is good get along with someone who is evil? Are light and darkness the same? 15 Is Christ a friend of Satan?[a] Can people who follow the Lord have anything in common with those who don't? 16 (E) Do idols belong in the temple of God? We are the temple of the living God, as God himself says,

“I will live with these people
    and walk among them.
I will be their God,
and they will be
    my people.”

17 (F) The Lord also says,

“Leave them and stay away!
Don't touch anything
    that isn't clean.
Then I will welcome you
18     (G) and be your Father.
You will be my sons
    and my daughters,
as surely as I am God,
    the All-Powerful.”

My friends, God has made us these promises. So we should stay away from everything that keeps our bodies and spirits from being clean. We should honor God and try to be completely like him.

The Church Makes Paul Happy

Make a place for us in your hearts! We haven't mistreated or hurt anyone. We haven't cheated anyone. I am not saying this to be hard on you. But, as I have said before, you will always be in our thoughts, whether we live or die. I trust you completely.[b] I am always proud of you, and I am greatly encouraged. In all my trouble I am still very happy.

(H) After we came to Macedonia, we didn't have any chance to rest. We were faced with all kinds of problems. We were troubled by enemies and troubled by fears. But God cheers up people in need, and this is what he did when he sent Titus to us. Of course, we were glad to see Titus, but what really made us glad is the way you cheered him up. He told how sorry you were and how concerned you were about me. And this made me even happier.

I don't feel bad anymore, even though my letter[c] hurt your feelings. I did feel bad at first, but I don't now. I know that the letter hurt you for a while. Now I am happy, but not because I hurt your feelings. It is because God used your hurt feelings to make you turn back to him, and none of you were harmed by us. 10 When God makes you feel sorry enough to turn to him and be saved, you don't have anything to feel bad about. But when this world makes you feel sorry, it can cause your death.

11 Just look what God has done by making you feel sorry! You sincerely want to prove you are innocent. You are angry. You are shocked. You are eager to see that justice is done. You have proved that you were completely right in this matter. 12 When I wrote you, it wasn't to accuse the one who was wrong or to take up for the one who was hurt. I wrote, so God would show you how much you do care for us. 13 And we were greatly encouraged.

Although we were encouraged, we felt even better when we saw how happy Titus was, because you had shown he had nothing to worry about. 14 We had told him how much we thought of you, and you did not disappoint us. Just as we have always told you the truth, so everything we told him about you has also proved to be true. 15 Titus loves all of you very much, especially when he remembers how you obeyed him and how you trembled with fear when you welcomed him. 16 It makes me really glad to know I can depend on you.

Generous Giving

(I) My friends, we want you to know that the churches in Macedonia[d] have shown others God's gift of undeserved grace. Although they were going through hard times and were very poor, they were glad to give generously. They gave as much as they could afford and even more, simply because they wanted to. They even asked and begged us to let them have the joy of giving their money for God's people. And they did more than we had hoped. They gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us, just as God wanted them to do.

Titus was the one who got you started doing this good thing, so we begged him to help you finish what you had begun. You do everything better than anyone else. You have stronger faith. You speak better and know more. You are eager to give, and you love us better.[e] Now you must give more generously than anyone else.

I am not ordering you to do this. I am simply testing how real your love is by comparing it with the concern that others have shown. You know our Lord Jesus Christ treated us with undeserved grace by giving up all his riches, so you could become rich.

10 A year ago you were the first ones to give, and you gave because you wanted to. So listen to my advice. 11 I think you should finish what you started. If you give according to what you have, you will prove you are as eager to give as you were to think about giving. 12 It doesn't matter how much you have. What matters is how much you are willing to give from what you have.

13 I am not trying to make life easier for others by making life harder for you. But it is only fair 14 for you to share with them when you have so much, and they have so little. Later, when they have more than enough, and you are in need, they can share with you. Then everyone will have a fair share, 15 (J) just as the Scriptures say,

“Those who gathered
too much
    had nothing left.
Those who gathered
only a little
    had all they needed.”

Titus and His Friends

16 I am grateful that God made Titus care as much about you as we do. 17 When we begged Titus to visit you, he said he would. He wanted to because he cared so much for you. 18 With Titus we are also sending one of the Lord's followers who is well known in every church for spreading the good news. 19 The churches chose this follower to travel with us while we carry this gift that will bring praise to the Lord and show how much we hope to help. 20 We don't want anyone to find fault with the way we handle your generous gift. 21 (K) But we want to do what pleases the Lord and what people think is right.

22 We are also sending someone else with Titus and the other follower. We approve of this man. In fact, he has already shown us many times that he wants to help. And now he wants to help even more than ever, because he trusts you so much. 23 Titus is my partner, who works with me to serve you. The other two followers are sent by the churches, and they bring honor to Christ. 24 Treat them in such a way that the churches will see your love and will know why we bragged about you.

The Money for God's People

I don't need to write you about the money you plan to give for God's people. I know how eager you are to give. And I have proudly told the Lord's followers in Macedonia that you people in Achaia have been ready for a whole year. Now your desire to give has made them want to give. This is why I am sending Titus and the two others to you. I want you to be ready, just as I promised. This will prove we were not wrong to brag about you.

Some followers from Macedonia may come with me, and I want them to find that you have the money ready. If you don't, I would be embarrassed for trusting you to do this. But you would be embarrassed even more. So I have decided to ask Titus and the others to spend some time with you before I arrive. This way they can arrange to collect the money you have promised. Then you will have the chance to give because you want to, and not because you feel forced to.

Remember this saying,

“A few seeds make
    a small harvest,
but a lot of seeds make
    a big harvest.”

(L) Each of you must make up your own mind about how much to give. But don't feel sorry that you must give and don't feel you are forced to give. God loves people who love to give. God can bless you with everything you need, and you will always have more than enough to do all kinds of good things for others. (M) The Scriptures say,

“God freely gives his gifts
to the poor,
    and always does right.”

10 (N) God gives seed to farmers and provides everyone with food. He will increase what you have, so you can give even more to those in need. 11 You will be blessed in every way, and you will be able to keep on being generous. Then many people will thank God when we deliver your gift.

12 What you are doing is much more than a service that supplies God's people with what they need. It is something that will make many others thank God. 13 The way in which you have proved yourselves by this service will bring honor and praise to God. You believed the message about Christ, and you obeyed it by sharing generously with God's people and with everyone else. 14 Now they are praying for you and want to see you, because God used you to bless them so very much. 15 Thank God for his gift that is too wonderful for words!

Paul Defends His Work for Christ

10 Do you think I am a coward when I am with you and brave when I am far away? Well, I ask you to listen, because Christ himself was humble and gentle. Some people have said we act like the people of this world. So when I arrive, I expect I will have to be firm and forceful in what I say to them. Please don't make me treat you that way. We live in this world, but we don't act like its people or fight our battles with the weapons of this world. Instead, we use God's power that can destroy fortresses. We destroy arguments and every bit of pride that keeps anyone from knowing God. We capture people's thoughts and make them obey Christ. And when you completely obey him, we will punish anyone who refuses to obey.

You judge by appearances.[f] If any of you think you are the only ones who belong to Christ, then think again. We belong to Christ as much as you do. Maybe I brag a little too much about the authority that the Lord gave me to help you and not to hurt you. Yet I am not embarrassed to brag. And I am not trying to scare you with my letters. 10 Some of you are saying, “Paul's letters are harsh and powerful. But in person, he is a weakling and has nothing worth saying.” 11 Those people had better understand that when I am with you, I will do exactly what I say in my letters.

12 We won't dare compare ourselves with those who think so much of themselves. But they are foolish to compare themselves with themselves. 13 We won't brag about something we don't have a right to brag about. We will only brag about the work God has sent us to do, and you are part of that work. 14 We are not bragging more than we should. After all, we did bring the message about Christ to you.

15 We don't brag about what others have done, as if we had done those things ourselves. But I hope as you become stronger in your faith, we will be able to reach many more of the people around you.[g] That has always been our goal. 16 Then we will be able to preach the good news in other lands where we cannot take credit for work someone else has already done. 17 (O) The Scriptures say, “If you want to brag, then brag about the Lord.” 18 You may brag about yourself, but the only approval that counts is the Lord's approval.

Paul and the False Apostles

11 Please put up with a little of my foolishness. I am as concerned about you as God is. You were like a virgin bride I had chosen only for Christ. (P) But now I fear that you will be tricked, just as Eve was tricked by that lying snake. I am afraid that you might stop thinking about Christ in an honest and sincere way. We told you about Jesus, and you received the Holy Spirit and accepted our message. But you let some people tell you about another Jesus. Now you are ready to receive another spirit and accept a different message. I think I am as good as any of those super apostles. I may not speak as well as they do, but I know as much. And this has already been made perfectly clear to you.

Was it wrong for me to lower myself and honor you by preaching God's message free of charge? I robbed other churches by taking money from them to serve you. (Q) Even when I was in need, I still didn't bother you. In fact, some of the Lord's followers from Macedonia brought me what I needed. I have not been a burden to you in the past, and I will never be a burden. 10 As surely as I speak the truth about Christ, no one in Achaia can stop me from bragging about this. 11 And it isn't because I don't love you. God himself knows how much I do love you.

12 I plan to go on doing just what I have always done. Then those people won't be able to brag about doing the same things we are doing. 13 Anyway, they are no more than false apostles and dishonest workers. They only pretend to be apostles of Christ. 14 And it is no wonder. Even Satan tries to make himself look like an angel of light. 15 So why does it seem strange for Satan's servants to pretend to do what is right? Someday they will get exactly what they deserve.

Paul's Sufferings for Christ

16 I don't want any of you to think I am a fool. But if you do, then let me be a fool and brag a little. 17 When I do all this bragging, I do it as a fool and not for the Lord. 18 Yet if others want to brag about what they have done, so will I. 19 And since you are so smart, you will gladly put up with a fool. 20 In fact, you let people make slaves of you and cheat you and steal from you. Why, you even let them strut around and slap you in the face. 21 I am ashamed to say we are too weak to behave in such a way.

If they can brag, so can I, but it is a foolish thing to do. 22 Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Jews? So am I. Are they from the family of Abraham? Well, so am I. 23 (R) Are they servants of Christ? I am a fool to talk this way, but I serve him better than they do. I have worked harder and have been put in jail more times. I have been beaten with whips more and have been in danger of death more often.

24 (S) Five times my own people gave me 39 lashes with a whip. 25 (T) Three times the Romans beat me with a big stick, and once my enemies stoned me. I have been shipwrecked three times, and I even had to spend a night and a day in the sea. 26 (U) During my many travels, I have been in danger from rivers, robbers, my own people, and foreigners. My life has been in danger in cities, in deserts, at sea, and with people who only pretended to be the Lord's followers.

27 I have worked and struggled and spent many sleepless nights. I have gone hungry and thirsty and often had nothing to eat. I have been cold from not having enough clothes to keep me warm. 28 Besides everything else, each day I am burdened down, worrying about all the churches. 29 When others are weak, I am weak too. When others are tricked into sin, I get angry.[h]

30 If I have to brag, I will brag about how weak I am. 31 God, the Father of our Lord Jesus, knows I am not lying. And God is to be praised forever! 32 (V) The governor of Damascus at the time of King Aretas had the city gates guarded, so he could capture me. 33 But I escaped by being let down in a basket through a window in the city wall.

Visions from the Lord

12 I have to brag. There is nothing to be gained by it, but I must brag about the visions and other things that the Lord has shown me. I know about one of Christ's followers who was taken up into the third heaven 14 years ago. I don't know if the man was still in his body when it happened, but God certainly knows.

As I said, only God really knows if this man was in his body at the time. But he was taken up into paradise,[i] where he heard things too wonderful to tell. I will brag about that man, but not about myself, except to say how weak I am.

Yet even if I did brag, I would not be foolish. I would simply be speaking the truth. But I will try not to say too much. That way, none of you will think more highly of me than you should because of what you have seen me do and say. Of course, I am now referring to the wonderful things I saw. One of Satan's angels was sent to make me suffer terribly, so that I would not feel too proud.[j]

Three times I begged the Lord to make this suffering go away. But he replied, “My gift of undeserved grace is all you need. My power is strongest when you are weak.” So if Christ keeps giving me his power, I will gladly brag about how weak I am. 10 Yes, I am glad to be weak or insulted or mistreated or to have troubles and sufferings, if it is for Christ. Because when I am weak, I am strong.

Paul's Concern for the Lord's Followers at Corinth

11 I have been making a fool of myself. But you forced me to do it, when you should have been speaking up for me. I may be nothing at all, but I am as good as those super apostles. 12 When I was with you, I was patient and worked all the powerful miracles and signs and wonders of a true apostle. 13 You missed out on only one blessing the other churches received. That is, you didn't have to support me. Forgive me for doing you wrong.

14 I am planning to visit you for the third time. But I still won't make a burden of myself. What I really want is you, and not what you have. Children are not supposed to save up for their parents, but parents are supposed to take care of their children. 15 So I will gladly give all I have and all I am. Will you love me less for loving you too much? 16 You agree that I wasn't a burden to you. Maybe that's because I was trying to catch you off guard and trick you. 17 Were you cheated by any of those I sent to you? 18 I urged Titus to visit you, and I sent another follower with him. But Titus didn't cheat you, and we felt and behaved the same way he did.

19 Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you? Actually, we have been speaking to God as followers of Christ. But, my friends, we did it all for your good.

20 I am afraid when I come, we won't be pleased with each other. I fear that some of you may be arguing or jealous or angry or selfish or gossiping or insulting each other. I even fear that you may be proud and acting like a mob. 21 I am afraid God will make me ashamed when I visit you again. I will feel like crying because many of you have never given up your old sins. You are still doing things that are immoral, indecent, and shameful.

Final Warnings and Greetings

13 (W) I am on my way to visit you for the third time. And as the Scriptures say, “Any charges must be proved true by at least two or three witnesses.” During my second visit I warned you that I would punish you and anyone else who doesn't stop sinning. I am far away from you now, but I give you the same warning. This should prove to you that I am speaking for Christ. When he corrects you, he won't be weak. He will be powerful! Although he was weak when he was nailed to the cross, he now lives by the power of God. We are weak, just as Christ was. But you will see that we will live by the power of God, just as Christ does.

Test yourselves and find out if you really are true to your faith. If you pass the test, you will discover that Christ is living in you. But if Christ isn't living in you, you have failed. I hope you will discover we have not failed. We pray you will stop doing evil things. We don't pray like this to make ourselves look good, but to get you to do right, even if we are failures.

All we can do is to follow the truth and not fight against it. Even though we are weak, we are glad that you are strong, and we pray you will do even better. 10 I am writing these things to you before I arrive. This way I won't have to be hard on you when I use the authority the Lord has given me. I was given this authority, so I could help you and not destroy you.

11 Goodbye, my friends. Do better and pay attention to what I have said. Try to get along and live peacefully with each other.

Now I pray that God, who gives love and peace, will be with you. 12 Give each other a warm greeting. All God's people send their greetings.

13 I pray that the Lord Jesus Christ will bless you and be kind to you! May God bless you with his love, and may the Holy Spirit join all your hearts together.

Footnotes

  1. 6.15 Satan: The Greek text has “Beliar,” which is another form of the Hebrew word “Belial,” meaning “wicked” or “useless.” The Jewish people sometimes used this as a name for Satan.
  2. 7.4 I trust you completely: Or “I have always spoken the truth to you” or “I can speak freely to you.”
  3. 7.8 my letter: There is no copy of this letter that Paul wrote to the church at Corinth.
  4. 8.1 churches in Macedonia: The churches that Paul had started in Philippi and Thessalonica. The church in Berea is probably also meant.
  5. 8.7 you love us better: Some manuscripts have “we love you better.”
  6. 10.7 You judge by appearances: Or “Take a close look at yourselves.”
  7. 10.15 we will be able to reach many more of the people around you: Or “you will praise us even more because of our work among you.”
  8. 11.29 When others are tricked into sin, I get angry: Or “When others stumble into sin, I hurt for them.”
  9. 12.4 paradise: In the Greek translation of the Old Testament, this word is used for the Garden of Eden. In New Testament times it was sometimes used for the place where God's people are happy and at rest, as they wait for the final judgment.
  10. 12.7 Of course … too proud: Or “Because of the wonderful things I saw, one of Satan's angels was sent to make me suffer terribly, so I would not feel too proud.”

Awaiting the New Body

For we know that if the earthly(A) tent(B) we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan,(C) longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling,(D) because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan(E) and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling,(F) so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.(G)

Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight.(H) We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.(I) So we make it our goal to please him,(J) whether we are at home in the body or away from it. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us(K) for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

The Ministry of Reconciliation

11 Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord,(L) we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.(M) 12 We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again,(N) but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us,(O) so that you can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart. 13 If we are “out of our mind,”(P) as some say, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.(Q) 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves(R) but for him who died for them(S) and was raised again.

16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly(T) point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,(U) the new creation(V) has come:[a] The old has gone, the new is here!(W) 18 All this is from God,(X) who reconciled us to himself through Christ(Y) and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them.(Z) And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors,(AA) as though God were making his appeal through us.(AB) We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.(AC) 21 God made him who had no sin(AD) to be sin[b] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.(AE)

As God’s co-workers(AF) we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain.(AG) For he says,

“In the time of my favor I heard you,
and in the day of salvation I helped you.”[c](AH)

I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.

Paul’s Hardships

We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path,(AI) so that our ministry will not be discredited. Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments(AJ) and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger;(AK) in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit(AL) and in sincere love;(AM) in truthful speech(AN) and in the power of God;(AO) with weapons of righteousness(AP) in the right hand and in the left; through glory and dishonor,(AQ) bad report(AR) and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors;(AS) known, yet regarded as unknown; dying,(AT) and yet we live on;(AU) beaten, and yet not killed; 10 sorrowful, yet always rejoicing;(AV) poor, yet making many rich;(AW) having nothing,(AX) and yet possessing everything.(AY)

11 We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you.(AZ) 12 We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. 13 As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children(BA)—open wide your hearts(BB) also.

Warning Against Idolatry

14 Do not be yoked together(BC) with unbelievers.(BD) For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?(BE) 15 What harmony is there between Christ and Belial[d]?(BF) Or what does a believer(BG) have in common with an unbeliever?(BH) 16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols?(BI) For we are the temple(BJ) of the living God.(BK) As God has said:

“I will live with them
    and walk among them,
and I will be their God,
and they will be my people.”[e](BL)

17 Therefore,

“Come out from them(BM)
    and be separate,
says the Lord.
Touch no unclean thing,
    and I will receive you.”[f](BN)

18 And,

“I will be a Father to you,
and you will be my sons and daughters,(BO)
says the Lord Almighty.”[g](BP)

Therefore, since we have these promises,(BQ) dear friends,(BR) let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness(BS) out of reverence for God.

Paul’s Joy Over the Church’s Repentance

Make room for us in your hearts.(BT) We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one. I do not say this to condemn you; I have said before that you have such a place in our hearts(BU) that we would live or die with you. I have spoken to you with great frankness; I take great pride in you.(BV) I am greatly encouraged;(BW) in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.(BX)

For when we came into Macedonia,(BY) we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn(BZ)—conflicts on the outside, fears within.(CA) But God, who comforts the downcast,(CB) comforted us by the coming of Titus,(CC) and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.

Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter,(CD) I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while— yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation(CE) and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 11 See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern,(CF) what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. 12 So even though I wrote to you,(CG) it was neither on account of the one who did the wrong(CH) nor on account of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are. 13 By all this we are encouraged.

In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus(CI) was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you. 14 I had boasted to him about you,(CJ) and you have not embarrassed me. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting about you to Titus(CK) has proved to be true as well. 15 And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient,(CL) receiving him with fear and trembling.(CM) 16 I am glad I can have complete confidence in you.(CN)

The Collection for the Lord’s People

And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian(CO) churches. In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.(CP) For I testify that they gave as much as they were able,(CQ) and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing(CR) in this service(CS) to the Lord’s people.(CT) And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us. So we urged(CU) Titus,(CV) just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion(CW) this act of grace on your part. But since you excel in everything(CX)—in faith, in speech, in knowledge,(CY) in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you[h]—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.

I am not commanding you,(CZ) but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. For you know the grace(DA) of our Lord Jesus Christ,(DB) that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor,(DC) so that you through his poverty might become rich.(DD)

10 And here is my judgment(DE) about what is best for you in this matter. Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so.(DF) 11 Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness(DG) to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. 12 For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has,(DH) not according to what one does not have.

13 Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. 14 At the present time your plenty will supply what they need,(DI) so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality, 15 as it is written: “The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.”[i](DJ)

Titus Sent to Receive the Collection

16 Thanks be to God,(DK) who put into the heart(DL) of Titus(DM) the same concern I have for you. 17 For Titus not only welcomed our appeal, but he is coming to you with much enthusiasm and on his own initiative.(DN) 18 And we are sending along with him the brother(DO) who is praised by all the churches(DP) for his service to the gospel.(DQ) 19 What is more, he was chosen by the churches to accompany us(DR) as we carry the offering, which we administer in order to honor the Lord himself and to show our eagerness to help.(DS) 20 We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer this liberal gift. 21 For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man.(DT)

22 In addition, we are sending with them our brother who has often proved to us in many ways that he is zealous, and now even more so because of his great confidence in you. 23 As for Titus,(DU) he is my partner(DV) and co-worker(DW) among you; as for our brothers,(DX) they are representatives of the churches and an honor to Christ. 24 Therefore show these men the proof of your love and the reason for our pride in you,(DY) so that the churches can see it.

There is no need(DZ) for me to write to you about this service(EA) to the Lord’s people.(EB) For I know your eagerness to help,(EC) and I have been boasting(ED) about it to the Macedonians, telling them that since last year(EE) you in Achaia(EF) were ready to give; and your enthusiasm has stirred most of them to action. But I am sending the brothers(EG) in order that our boasting about you in this matter should not prove hollow, but that you may be ready, as I said you would be.(EH) For if any Macedonians(EI) come with me and find you unprepared, we—not to say anything about you—would be ashamed of having been so confident. So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers(EJ) to visit you in advance and finish the arrangements for the generous gift you had promised. Then it will be ready as a generous gift,(EK) not as one grudgingly given.(EL)

Generosity Encouraged

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.(EM) Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give,(EN) not reluctantly or under compulsion,(EO) for God loves a cheerful giver.(EP) And God is able(EQ) to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need,(ER) you will abound in every good work. As it is written:

“They have freely scattered their gifts(ES) to the poor;
    their righteousness endures forever.”[j](ET)

10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food(EU) will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.(EV) 11 You will be enriched(EW) in every way so that you can be generous(EX) on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.(EY)

12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs(EZ) of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.(FA) 13 Because of the service(FB) by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God(FC) for the obedience that accompanies your confession(FD) of the gospel of Christ,(FE) and for your generosity(FF) in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14 And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15 Thanks be to God(FG) for his indescribable gift!(FH)

Paul’s Defense of His Ministry

10 By the humility and gentleness(FI) of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul,(FJ) who am “timid” when face to face with you, but “bold” toward you when away! I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold(FK) as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world.(FL) For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.(FM) The weapons we fight with(FN) are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power(FO) to demolish strongholds.(FP) We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God,(FQ) and we take captive every thought to make it obedient(FR) to Christ. And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.(FS)

You are judging by appearances.[k](FT) If anyone is confident that they belong to Christ,(FU) they should consider again that we belong to Christ just as much as they do.(FV) So even if I boast somewhat freely about the authority the Lord gave us(FW) for building you up rather than tearing you down,(FX) I will not be ashamed of it. I do not want to seem to be trying to frighten you with my letters. 10 For some say, “His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive(FY) and his speaking amounts to nothing.”(FZ) 11 Such people should realize that what we are in our letters when we are absent, we will be in our actions when we are present.

12 We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves.(GA) When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. 13 We, however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the sphere of service God himself has assigned to us,(GB) a sphere that also includes you. 14 We are not going too far in our boasting, as would be the case if we had not come to you, for we did get as far as you(GC) with the gospel of Christ.(GD) 15 Neither do we go beyond our limits(GE) by boasting of work done by others.(GF) Our hope is that, as your faith continues to grow,(GG) our sphere of activity among you will greatly expand, 16 so that we can preach the gospel(GH) in the regions beyond you.(GI) For we do not want to boast about work already done in someone else’s territory. 17 But, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”[l](GJ) 18 For it is not the one who commends himself(GK) who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.(GL)

Paul and the False Apostles

11 I hope you will put up with(GM) me in a little foolishness.(GN) Yes, please put up with me! I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband,(GO) to Christ, so that I might present you(GP) as a pure virgin to him. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning,(GQ) your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached,(GR) or if you receive a different spirit(GS) from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel(GT) from the one you accepted, you put up with it(GU) easily enough.

I do not think I am in the least inferior to those “super-apostles.”[m](GV) I may indeed be untrained as a speaker,(GW) but I do have knowledge.(GX) We have made this perfectly clear to you in every way. Was it a sin(GY) for me to lower myself in order to elevate you by preaching the gospel of God(GZ) to you free of charge?(HA) I robbed other churches by receiving support from them(HB) so as to serve you. And when I was with you and needed something, I was not a burden to anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied what I needed.(HC) I have kept myself from being a burden to you(HD) in any way, and will continue to do so. 10 As surely as the truth of Christ is in me,(HE) nobody in the regions of Achaia(HF) will stop this boasting(HG) of mine. 11 Why? Because I do not love you? God knows(HH) I do!(HI)

12 And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about. 13 For such people are false apostles,(HJ) deceitful(HK) workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ.(HL) 14 And no wonder, for Satan(HM) himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.(HN)

Paul Boasts About His Sufferings

16 I repeat: Let no one take me for a fool.(HO) But if you do, then tolerate me just as you would a fool, so that I may do a little boasting. 17 In this self-confident boasting I am not talking as the Lord would,(HP) but as a fool.(HQ) 18 Since many are boasting in the way the world does,(HR) I too will boast.(HS) 19 You gladly put up with(HT) fools since you are so wise!(HU) 20 In fact, you even put up with(HV) anyone who enslaves you(HW) or exploits you or takes advantage of you or puts on airs or slaps you in the face. 21 To my shame I admit that we were too weak(HX) for that!

Whatever anyone else dares to boast about—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast about.(HY) 22 Are they Hebrews? So am I.(HZ) Are they Israelites? So am I.(IA) Are they Abraham’s descendants? So am I.(IB) 23 Are they servants of Christ?(IC) (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder,(ID) been in prison more frequently,(IE) been flogged more severely,(IF) and been exposed to death again and again.(IG) 24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes(IH) minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods,(II) once I was pelted with stones,(IJ) three times I was shipwrecked,(IK) I spent a night and a day in the open sea, 26 I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews,(IL) in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city,(IM) in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers.(IN) 27 I have labored and toiled(IO) and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food;(IP) I have been cold and naked. 28 Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches.(IQ) 29 Who is weak, and I do not feel weak?(IR) Who is led into sin,(IS) and I do not inwardly burn?

30 If I must boast, I will boast(IT) of the things that show my weakness.(IU) 31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is to be praised forever,(IV) knows(IW) that I am not lying. 32 In Damascus the governor under King Aretas had the city of the Damascenes guarded in order to arrest me.(IX) 33 But I was lowered in a basket from a window in the wall and slipped through his hands.(IY)

Paul’s Vision and His Thorn

12 I must go on boasting.(IZ) Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations(JA) from the Lord. I know a man in Christ(JB) who fourteen years ago was caught up(JC) to the third heaven.(JD) Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows.(JE) And I know that this man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows— was caught up(JF) to paradise(JG) and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell. I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses.(JH) Even if I should choose to boast,(JI) I would not be a fool,(JJ) because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say, or because of these surpassingly great revelations.(JK) Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh,(JL) a messenger of Satan,(JM) to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.(JN) But he said to me, “My grace(JO) is sufficient for you, for my power(JP) is made perfect in weakness.(JQ)(JR) Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight(JS) in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships,(JT) in persecutions,(JU) in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.(JV)

Paul’s Concern for the Corinthians

11 I have made a fool of myself,(JW) but you drove me to it. I ought to have been commended by you, for I am not in the least inferior to the “super-apostles,”[n](JX) even though I am nothing.(JY) 12 I persevered in demonstrating among you the marks of a true apostle, including signs, wonders and miracles.(JZ) 13 How were you inferior to the other churches, except that I was never a burden to you?(KA) Forgive me this wrong!(KB)

14 Now I am ready to visit you for the third time,(KC) and I will not be a burden to you, because what I want is not your possessions but you. After all, children should not have to save up for their parents,(KD) but parents for their children.(KE) 15 So I will very gladly spend for you everything I have and expend myself as well.(KF) If I love you more,(KG) will you love me less? 16 Be that as it may, I have not been a burden to you.(KH) Yet, crafty fellow that I am, I caught you by trickery! 17 Did I exploit you through any of the men I sent to you? 18 I urged(KI) Titus(KJ) to go to you and I sent our brother(KK) with him. Titus did not exploit you, did he? Did we not walk in the same footsteps by the same Spirit?

19 Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you? We have been speaking in the sight of God(KL) as those in Christ; and everything we do, dear friends,(KM) is for your strengthening.(KN) 20 For I am afraid that when I come(KO) I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be.(KP) I fear that there may be discord,(KQ) jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition,(KR) slander,(KS) gossip,(KT) arrogance(KU) and disorder.(KV) 21 I am afraid that when I come again my God will humble me before you, and I will be grieved(KW) over many who have sinned earlier(KX) and have not repented of the impurity, sexual sin and debauchery(KY) in which they have indulged.

Final Warnings

13 This will be my third visit to you.(KZ) “Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.”[o](LA) I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent:(LB) On my return I will not spare(LC) those who sinned earlier(LD) or any of the others, since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me.(LE) He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you. For to be sure, he was crucified in weakness,(LF) yet he lives by God’s power.(LG) Likewise, we are weak(LH) in him, yet by God’s power we will live with him(LI) in our dealing with you.

Examine yourselves(LJ) to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.(LK) Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you(LL)—unless, of course, you fail the test? And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test. Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed. For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. We are glad whenever we are weak(LM) but you are strong;(LN) and our prayer is that you may be fully restored.(LO) 10 This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh(LP) in my use of authority—the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.(LQ)

Final Greetings

11 Finally, brothers and sisters,(LR) rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace.(LS) And the God of love(LT) and peace(LU) will be with you.

12 Greet one another with a holy kiss.(LV) 13 All God’s people here send their greetings.(LW)

14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,(LX) and the love of God,(LY) and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit(LZ) be with you all.
