Greeting

Paul, (A)an apostle of Christ Jesus (B)by the will of God, and (C)Timothy our brother,

To the church of God that is at Corinth, (D)with all the saints who are in the whole of Achaia:

(E)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

God of All Comfort

(F)Blessed be the (G)God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and (H)God of all comfort, (I)who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in (J)Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.[a] (K)If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer. Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you (L)share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort.

For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers,[b] of (M)the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us (N)rely not on ourselves (O)but on God (P)who raises the dead. 10 (Q)He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. (R)On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again. 11 (S)You also must help us by prayer, so that many will give thanks on our behalf (T)for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many.

Paul's Change of Plans

12 For our boast is this, (U)the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity[c] and (V)godly sincerity, (W)not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you. 13 For we are not writing to you anything other than what you read and understand and I hope you will fully understand— 14 just as you did (X)partially understand us—that (Y)on the day of our Lord Jesus (Z)you will boast of us as (AA)we will boast of you.

15 Because I was sure of this, (AB)I wanted to come to you first, so that you might have (AC)a second (AD)experience of grace. 16 I wanted to visit you (AE)on my way to Macedonia, and to come back to you from Macedonia and have you send me on my way to Judea. 17 Was I vacillating when I wanted to do this? Do I make my plans (AF)according to the flesh, ready to say “Yes, yes” and “No, no” at the same time? 18 As surely as (AG)God is faithful, (AH)our word to you has not been Yes and No. 19 For (AI)the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, (AJ)Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No, but (AK)in him it is always Yes. 20 For (AL)all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our (AM)Amen to God for his glory. 21 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and (AN)has anointed us, 22 and who has also (AO)put his seal on us and (AP)given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.[d]

23 But (AQ)I call God to witness against me—it was (AR)to spare you that I refrained from coming again to Corinth. 24 Not that we (AS)lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm (AT)in your faith.

For I made up my mind (AU)not to make another painful visit to you. For (AV)if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained? And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, (AW)for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. For (AX)I wrote to you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.

Forgive the Sinner

Now (AY)if anyone has caused pain, (AZ)he has caused it not to me, but (BA)in some measure—not to put it too severely—to all of you. For such a one, (BB)this punishment by the majority is enough, so (BC)you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. So I beg you to reaffirm your love for him. For this is why I wrote, that I might (BD)test you and know (BE)whether you are obedient in everything. 10 Anyone whom you forgive, I also forgive. Indeed, what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ, 11 so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for (BF)we are not ignorant of his designs.

Triumph in Christ

12 When (BG)I came to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ, even though (BH)a door was opened for me in the Lord, 13 my spirit (BI)was not at rest because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I took leave of them and went on to Macedonia.

14 But (BJ)thanks be to God, who in Christ always (BK)leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads (BL)the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. 15 For we are the aroma of Christ to God among (BM)those who are being saved and among (BN)those who are perishing, 16 (BO)to one a fragrance from death to death, (BP)to the other a fragrance from life to life. (BQ)Who is sufficient for these things? 17 For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God's word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.

Ministers of the New Covenant

(BR)Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, (BS)as some do, (BT)letters of recommendation to you, or from you? (BU)You yourselves are our letter of recommendation, written on our[e] hearts, to be known and read by all. And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of (BV)the living God, not on (BW)tablets of stone but on (BX)tablets of (BY)human hearts.[f]

(BZ)Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. (CA)Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but (CB)our sufficiency is from God, who has made us sufficient to be (CC)ministers of (CD)a new covenant, not of (CE)the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but (CF)the Spirit gives life.

Now if (CG)the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such glory (CH)that the Israelites could not gaze at Moses' face because of its glory, which was being brought to an end, will not the ministry of the Spirit have even more glory? For if there was glory in (CI)the ministry of condemnation, (CJ)the ministry of righteousness must far exceed it in glory. 10 Indeed, in this case, what once had glory has come to have no glory at all, because of the glory that surpasses it. 11 For if what was being brought to an end came with glory, much more will what is permanent have glory.

12 Since we have such a hope, (CK)we are very bold, 13 not like Moses, (CL)who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. 14 But (CM)their minds were (CN)hardened. For to this day, (CO)when they read (CP)the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. 15 Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. 16 But when (CQ)one[g] turns to the Lord, (CR)the veil is removed. 17 Now the Lord[h] is the Spirit, and where (CS)the Spirit of the Lord is, there is (CT)freedom. 18 And we all, with unveiled face, (CU)beholding (CV)the glory of the Lord,[i] (CW)are being transformed into the same image (CX)from one degree of glory to another.[j] For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

The Light of the Gospel

Therefore, having (CY)this ministry (CZ)by the mercy of God,[k] we do not lose heart. But we have renounced (DA)disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice[l] cunning or (DB)to tamper with God's word, but (DC)by the open statement of the truth (DD)we would commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God. And even (DE)if our gospel is veiled, (DF)it is veiled to (DG)those who are perishing. In their case (DH)the god of this world (DI)has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing (DJ)the light of (DK)the gospel of the glory of Christ, (DL)who is the image of God. For what (DM)we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with (DN)ourselves as your servants[m] for Jesus' sake. For God, who said, (DO)“Let light shine out of darkness,” (DP)has shone in our hearts to give (DQ)the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Treasure in Jars of Clay

But we have this treasure in (DR)jars of clay, (DS)to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are (DT)afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but (DU)not forsaken; (DV)struck down, but not destroyed; 10 (DW)always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, (DX)so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 11 For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12 So (DY)death is at work in us, but life in you.

13 Since we have (DZ)the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, (EA)“I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak, 14 knowing that (EB)he who raised the Lord Jesus (EC)will raise us also with Jesus and (ED)bring us with you into his presence. 15 For (EE)it is all for your sake, so that as (EF)grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, (EG)to the glory of God.

16 So we do not lose heart. (EH)Though our outer self[n] is wasting away, (EI)our inner self (EJ)is being renewed day by day. 17 For (EK)this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 (EL)as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Our Heavenly Dwelling

For we know that if (EM)the tent that is (EN)our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, (EO)a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent (EP)we groan, longing to (EQ)put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting it on[o] we may not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal (ER)may be swallowed up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, (ES)who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

So we are always of good courage. We know that (ET)while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for (EU)we walk by faith, not (EV)by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we (EW)would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to (EX)please him. 10 For (EY)we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, (EZ)so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

The Ministry of Reconciliation

11 Therefore, knowing (FA)the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But (FB)what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience. 12 (FC)We are not commending ourselves to you again but (FD)giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart. 13 For if we (FE)are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ (FF)controls us, because we have concluded this: that (FG)one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, (FH)that those who live might no longer live for themselves but (FI)for him who for their sake died and was raised.

16 From now on, therefore, (FJ)we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is (FK)in Christ, he is (FL)a new creation.[p] (FM)The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, (FN)who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us (FO)the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling[q] the world to himself, (FP)not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us (FQ)the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, (FR)we are ambassadors for Christ, (FS)God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 (FT)For our sake he made him to be sin (FU)who knew no sin, so that in him we might become (FV)the righteousness of God.

(FW)Working together with him, then, (FX)we appeal to you (FY)not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says,

(FZ)“In a favorable time I listened to you,
and in a day of salvation I have helped you.”

Behold, (GA)now is the (GB)favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We (GC)put no obstacle in anyone's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but (GD)as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: (GE)by great endurance, (GF)in afflictions, (GG)hardships, calamities, (GH)beatings, imprisonments, (GI)riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; (GJ)by purity, (GK)knowledge, patience, kindness, (GL)the Holy Spirit, (GM)genuine love; by (GN)truthful speech, and (GO)the power of God; with (GP)the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; through honor and dishonor, (GQ)through slander and praise. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and (GR)yet well known; (GS)as dying, and behold, we live; (GT)as punished, and yet not killed; 10 (GU)as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; (GV)as poor, yet making many rich; (GW)as having nothing, (GX)yet possessing everything.

11 We have spoken freely to you,[r] Corinthians; (GY)our heart is wide open. 12 You are not restricted by us, but (GZ)you are restricted in your own affections. 13 (HA)In return (I speak (HB)as to children) widen your hearts also.

The Temple of the Living God

14 (HC)Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For (HD)what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or (HE)what fellowship has light with darkness? 15 (HF)What accord has Christ with Belial?[s] Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For (HG)we are the temple of the living God; as God said,

(HH)“I will make my dwelling among them and (HI)walk among them,
and (HJ)I will be their God,
and they shall be my people.
17 Therefore (HK)go out from their midst,
and be separate from them, says the Lord,
and touch no unclean thing;
    then I will welcome you,
18 (HL)and I will be a father to you,
and you shall be sons and daughters to me,
says the Lord Almighty.”

Since we have these promises, beloved, (HM)let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body[t] and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.

Paul's Joy

(HN)Make room in your hearts[u] for us. (HO)We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have taken advantage of no one. I do not say this to condemn you, for I said before that (HP)you are in our hearts, to die together and to live together. I am acting with (HQ)great boldness toward you; (HR)I have great pride in you; (HS)I am filled with comfort. In all our affliction, I am overflowing with joy.

For even (HT)when we came into Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but we were afflicted at every turn—(HU)fighting without and fear within. But (HV)God, who comforts the downcast, (HW)comforted us by the coming of Titus, and not only by his coming but also by the comfort with which he was comforted by you, as he told us of your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced still more. For (HX)even if I made you grieve with my letter, I do not regret it—though (HY)I did regret it, for I see that that letter grieved you, though only for a while. As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but (HZ)because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.

10 For (IA)godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas (IB)worldly grief produces death. 11 For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, (IC)what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter. 12 So although I wrote to you, it was not for the sake of the one (ID)who did the wrong, nor for the sake of the one who suffered the wrong, but in order that your earnestness for us might be revealed to you in the sight of God. 13 Therefore (IE)we are comforted.

And besides our own comfort, we rejoiced still more at the joy of Titus, because his spirit (IF)has been refreshed by you all. 14 For (IG)whatever boasts I made to him about you, I was not put to shame. But just as everything we said to you (IH)was true, so also our boasting before Titus has proved true. 15 And his affection for you is even greater, as he remembers (II)the obedience of you all, how you received him with fear and trembling. 16 I rejoice, because I have complete (IJ)confidence in you.

Encouragement to Give Generously

We want you to know, brothers,[v] about the grace of God that has been (IK)given among the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and (IL)their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For they gave (IM)according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, begging us earnestly (IN)for the favor[w] of taking part in (IO)the relief of the saints— and this, not as we expected, but they (IP)gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us. Accordingly, (IQ)we urged Titus that as he had started, so he should complete among you (IR)this act of grace. But as (IS)you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you[x](IT)see that you excel in this act of grace also.

(IU)I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that (IV)though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich. 10 And in this matter (IW)I give my judgment: (IX)this benefits you, who (IY)a year ago started not only to do this work but also to desire to do it. 11 So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have. 12 For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable (IZ)according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have. 13 For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness 14 your abundance at the present time should supply (JA)their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. 15 As it is written, (JB)“Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack.”

Commendation of Titus

16 But (JC)thanks be to God, (JD)who put into the heart of Titus the same earnest care I have for you. 17 For (JE)he not only accepted our appeal, but being himself very earnest he is going[y] to you of his own accord. 18 With him we are sending[z] (JF)the brother who is famous among (JG)all the churches for his preaching of the gospel. 19 And not only that, but he has been (JH)appointed by the churches to travel with us as we carry out this act of (JI)grace that is being ministered by us, (JJ)for the glory of the Lord himself and to show our good will. 20 We take this course so that no one should blame us about this generous gift that is being administered by us, 21 for (JK)we aim at what is honorable (JL)not only in the Lord's sight but also in the sight of man. 22 And with them we are sending our brother whom we have often tested and found earnest in many matters, but who is now more earnest than ever because of his great confidence in you. 23 As for Titus, he is (JM)my partner and fellow worker for your benefit. And as for our brothers, they are messengers[aa] of the churches, the glory of Christ. 24 So give proof before the churches of your love and of (JN)our boasting about you to these men.

The Collection for Christians in Jerusalem

Now (JO)it is superfluous for me to write to you about (JP)the ministry for the saints, for I know your readiness, (JQ)of which I boast about you to the people of Macedonia, saying that Achaia has been ready (JR)since last year. And your zeal has stirred up most of them. But (JS)I am sending[ab] the brothers so that our boasting about you may not prove empty in this matter, so that you may be ready, (JT)as I said you would be. Otherwise, if some Macedonians (JU)come with me and find that you are not ready, we would be humiliated—to say nothing of you—for being so confident. So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to go on ahead to you and arrange in advance for the (JV)gift[ac] you have promised, so that it may be ready (JW)as a willing gift, (JX)not as an exaction.[ad]

The Cheerful Giver

The point is this: (JY)whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully[ae] will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, (JZ)not reluctantly or under compulsion, for (KA)God loves a cheerful giver. And (KB)God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency[af] in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written,

(KC)“He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor;
    his righteousness endures forever.”

10 He who supplies (KD)seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and (KE)increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11 (KF)You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which (KG)through us will produce thanksgiving to God. 12 For the ministry of this service is not only supplying (KH)the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. 13 By their approval of this service, (KI)they[ag] will glorify God because of your submission that comes from your (KJ)confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, 14 while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. 15 (KK)Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!

Paul Defends His Ministry

10 (KL)I, Paul, myself entreat you, by the (KM)meekness and gentleness of Christ—I who am humble when face to face with you, but bold toward you when I am away!— I beg of you (KN)that when I am present I may not have to show (KO)boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect us of walking according to the flesh. For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the (KP)weapons of (KQ)our warfare are not of the flesh but have (KR)divine power (KS)to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and (KT)every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to (KU)obey Christ, (KV)being ready to punish every disobedience, (KW)when your obedience is complete.

(KX)Look at what is before your eyes. (KY)If anyone is confident that he is Christ's, let him remind himself that just as (KZ)he is Christ's, (LA)so also are we. For even if I boast a little too much of (LB)our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be ashamed. I do not want to appear to be frightening you with my letters. 10 For they say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but (LC)his bodily presence is weak, and (LD)his speech of no account.” 11 Let such a person understand that what we say by letter when absent, we do when present. 12 Not that we dare to classify or (LE)compare ourselves with some of those who (LF)are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are (LG)without understanding.

13 But we will not boast (LH)beyond limits, but will (LI)boast only with regard to the area of influence God assigned to us, (LJ)to reach even to you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves, as though we did not reach you. (LK)For we were the first to come all the way to you with the gospel of Christ. 15 We do not boast beyond limit in the labors of others. But our hope is that (LL)as your faith increases, our area of influence among you may be (LM)greatly enlarged, 16 so that we may preach the gospel in lands beyond you, without boasting of work already done in another's area of influence. 17 “Let (LN)the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” 18 For it is (LO)not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one (LP)whom the Lord commends.

Paul and the False Apostles

11 I wish you would bear with me in a little foolishness. Do bear with me! For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since (LQ)I betrothed you to one husband, (LR)to present you (LS)as a pure virgin to Christ. But I am afraid that (LT)as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts (LU)will be led astray from a (LV)sincere and (LW)pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes and (LX)proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept (LY)a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough. Indeed, I consider that (LZ)I am not in the least inferior to these super-apostles. (MA)Even if I am unskilled in speaking, (MB)I am not so in knowledge; indeed, in every way (MC)we have made this plain to you in all things.

Or (MD)did I commit a sin in humbling myself so that you might be exalted, because (ME)I preached God's gospel to you free of charge? I robbed other churches by accepting support from them in order to serve you. And when I was with you and was (MF)in need, (MG)I did not burden anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia (MH)supplied my need. So I refrained and will refrain (MI)from burdening you in any way. 10 (MJ)As the truth of Christ is in me, this boasting of mine (MK)will not be silenced in the regions of Achaia. 11 And why? (ML)Because I do not love you? (MM)God knows I do!

12 And what I am doing I will continue to do, (MN)in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do. 13 For such men are (MO)false apostles, (MP)deceitful workmen, (MQ)disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as (MR)an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as (MS)servants of righteousness. (MT)Their end will correspond to their deeds.

Paul's Sufferings as an Apostle

16 I repeat, (MU)let no one think me foolish. But even if you do, accept me as a fool, so that I too may boast a little. 17 What I am saying (MV)with this boastful confidence, (MW)I say not as the Lord would[ah] but as a fool. 18 Since (MX)many boast according to the flesh, I too will boast. 19 For you gladly bear with fools, (MY)being wise yourselves! 20 For you bear it if someone (MZ)makes slaves of you, or (NA)devours you, or takes advantage of you, or puts on airs, or (NB)strikes you in the face. 21 To my shame, I must say, (NC)we were too weak for that!

But whatever anyone else dares to boast of—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast of that. 22 Are they Hebrews? (ND)So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they offspring of Abraham? So am I. 23 Are they (NE)servants of Christ? (NF)I am a better one—I am talking like a madman—with far greater labors, (NG)far more imprisonments, (NH)with countless beatings, and (NI)often near death. 24 Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the (NJ)forty lashes less one. 25 Three times I was (NK)beaten with rods. (NL)Once I was stoned. Three times I (NM)was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; 26 on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, (NN)danger from my own people, (NO)danger from Gentiles, (NP)danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; 27 (NQ)in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, (NR)in hunger and thirst, often without food,[ai] in cold and exposure. 28 And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for (NS)all the churches. 29 (NT)Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to fall, and I am not indignant?

30 (NU)If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. 31 (NV)The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, (NW)he who is blessed forever, (NX)knows that I am not lying. 32 At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas (NY)was guarding the city of Damascus in order to seize me, 33 (NZ)but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall and escaped his hands.

Paul's Visions and His Thorn

12 I must go on boasting. Though there is nothing to be gained by it, I will go on to visions and (OA)revelations of the Lord. I know a man (OB)in Christ who fourteen years ago was (OC)caught up to (OD)the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, (OE)God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into (OF)paradise—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, (OG)God knows— and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, (OH)except of my weaknesses— though if I should wish to boast, (OI)I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth; but I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. So (OJ)to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations,[aj] (OK)a thorn was given me in the flesh, (OL)a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. (OM)Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, (ON)“My grace is sufficient for you, for (OO)my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that (OP)the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 (OQ)For the sake of Christ, then, (OR)I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For (OS)when I am weak, then I am strong.

Concern for the Corinthian Church

11 (OT)I have been a fool! You forced me to it, for I ought to have been commended by you. For I was (OU)not at all inferior to these super-apostles, (OV)even though I am nothing. 12 (OW)The signs of a true apostle were performed among you (OX)with utmost patience, with signs and wonders and mighty works. 13 For in what were you less favored than the rest of the churches, except that (OY)I myself did not burden you? Forgive me this wrong!

14 Here (OZ)for the third time I am ready to come to you. And I will not be a burden, for (PA)I seek not what is yours but you. For (PB)children are not obligated to save up for their parents, but (PC)parents for their children. 15 (PD)I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If (PE)I love you more, am I to be loved less? 16 But granting that (PF)I myself did not burden you, I was crafty, you say, and got the better of you by deceit. 17 Did I take advantage of you (PG)through any of those whom I sent to you? 18 (PH)I urged Titus to go, and sent (PI)the brother with him. Did Titus take advantage of you? Did we not act in the same spirit? Did we not take the same steps?

19 Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you? It is (PJ)in the sight of God that we have been speaking in Christ, and (PK)all for your upbuilding, beloved. 20 For I fear that perhaps (PL)when I come I may find you not as I wish, and that you may find me not as you wish—that perhaps there may be quarreling, jealousy, anger, hostility, slander, gossip, conceit, and disorder. 21 I fear that when I come again my God may humble me before you, and I may have to mourn over many of those (PM)who sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, (PN)sexual immorality, and sensuality that they have practiced.

Final Warnings

13 (PO)This is the third time I am coming to you. Every charge must be established (PP)by the evidence of two or three witnesses. (PQ)I warned (PR)those who sinned before and all the others, and I warn them now while absent, as I did when present on my second visit, that (PS)if I come again I will not spare them— since you seek proof that Christ (PT)is speaking in me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but (PU)is powerful among you. For (PV)he was crucified in weakness, but (PW)lives by the power of God. For (PX)we also are weak in him, but in dealing with you (PY)we will live with him by the power of God.

Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. (PZ)Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that (QA)Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test! I hope you will find out that we have not failed the test. But we pray to God that you may not do wrong—not that we may appear to have met the test, but that you may do what is right, though we may seem to have failed.

Paul, an apostle(A) of Christ Jesus by the will of God,(B) and Timothy(C) our brother,

To the church of God(D) in Corinth,(E) together with all his holy people throughout Achaia:(F)

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.(G)

Praise to the God of All Comfort

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,(H) the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us(I) in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ,(J) so also our comfort abounds through Christ. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation;(K) if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings,(L) so also you share in our comfort.

We do not want you to be uninformed,(M) brothers and sisters,[a] about the troubles we experienced(N) in the province of Asia.(O) We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God,(P) who raises the dead.(Q) 10 He has delivered us from such a deadly peril,(R) and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope(S) that he will continue to deliver us, 11 as you help us by your prayers.(T) Then many will give thanks(U) on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.

Paul’s Change of Plans

12 Now this is our boast: Our conscience(V) testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, with integrity[b](W) and godly sincerity.(X) We have done so, relying not on worldly wisdom(Y) but on God’s grace. 13 For we do not write you anything you cannot read or understand. And I hope that, 14 as you have understood us in part, you will come to understand fully that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the Lord Jesus.(Z)

15 Because I was confident of this, I wanted to visit you(AA) first so that you might benefit twice.(AB) 16 I wanted to visit you on my way(AC) to Macedonia(AD) and to come back to you from Macedonia, and then to have you send me on my way(AE) to Judea.(AF) 17 Was I fickle when I intended to do this? Or do I make my plans in a worldly manner(AG) so that in the same breath I say both “Yes, yes” and “No, no”?

18 But as surely as God is faithful,(AH) our message to you is not “Yes” and “No.” 19 For the Son of God,(AI) Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me and Silas[c](AJ) and Timothy(AK)—was not “Yes” and “No,” but in him it has always(AL) been “Yes.” 20 For no matter how many promises(AM) God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen”(AN) is spoken by us to the glory of God.(AO) 21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm(AP) in Christ. He anointed(AQ) us, 22 set his seal(AR) of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.(AS)

23 I call God as my witness(AT)—and I stake my life on it—that it was in order to spare you(AU) that I did not return to Corinth. 24 Not that we lord it over(AV) your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.(AW) So I made up my mind that I would not make another painful visit to you.(AX) For if I grieve you,(AY) who is left to make me glad but you whom I have grieved? I wrote as I did,(AZ) so that when I came I would not be distressed(BA) by those who should have made me rejoice. I had confidence(BB) in all of you, that you would all share my joy. For I wrote you(BC) out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you.

Forgiveness for the Offender

If anyone has caused grief,(BD) he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you to some extent—not to put it too severely. The punishment(BE) inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient. Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him,(BF) so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him. Another reason I wrote you(BG) was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.(BH) 10 Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, 11 in order that Satan(BI) might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.(BJ)

Ministers of the New Covenant

12 Now when I went to Troas(BK) to preach the gospel of Christ(BL) and found that the Lord had opened a door(BM) for me, 13 I still had no peace of mind,(BN) because I did not find my brother Titus(BO) there. So I said goodbye to them and went on to Macedonia.(BP)

14 But thanks be to God,(BQ) who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma(BR) of the knowledge(BS) of him everywhere. 15 For we are to God the pleasing aroma(BT) of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.(BU) 16 To the one we are an aroma that brings death;(BV) to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task?(BW) 17 Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit.(BX) On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity,(BY) as those sent from God.(BZ)

Are we beginning to commend ourselves(CA) again? Or do we need, like some people, letters of recommendation(CB) to you or from you? You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone.(CC) You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God,(CD) not on tablets of stone(CE) but on tablets of human hearts.(CF)

Such confidence(CG) we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves(CH) to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.(CI) He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant(CJ)—not of the letter(CK) but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.(CL)

The Greater Glory of the New Covenant

Now if the ministry that brought death,(CM) which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory,(CN) transitory though it was, will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? If the ministry that brought condemnation(CO) was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness!(CP) 10 For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. 11 And if what was transitory came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!

12 Therefore, since we have such a hope,(CQ) we are very bold.(CR) 13 We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face(CS) to prevent the Israelites from seeing the end of what was passing away. 14 But their minds were made dull,(CT) for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant(CU) is read.(CV) It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. 15 Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. 16 But whenever anyone turns to the Lord,(CW) the veil is taken away.(CX) 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit,(CY) and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.(CZ) 18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate[d](DA) the Lord’s glory,(DB) are being transformed into his image(DC) with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

Present Weakness and Resurrection Life

Therefore, since through God’s mercy(DD) we have this ministry, we do not lose heart.(DE) Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways;(DF) we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God.(DG) On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience(DH) in the sight of God. And even if our gospel(DI) is veiled,(DJ) it is veiled to those who are perishing.(DK) The god(DL) of this age(DM) has blinded(DN) the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ,(DO) who is the image of God.(DP) For what we preach is not ourselves,(DQ) but Jesus Christ as Lord,(DR) and ourselves as your servants(DS) for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”[e](DT) made his light shine in our hearts(DU) to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.(DV)

But we have this treasure in jars of clay(DW) to show that this all-surpassing power is from God(DX) and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side,(DY) but not crushed; perplexed,(DZ) but not in despair; persecuted,(EA) but not abandoned;(EB) struck down, but not destroyed.(EC) 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus,(ED) so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.(EE) 11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake,(EF) so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.(EG)

13 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.”[f](EH) Since we have that same spirit of[g] faith,(EI) we also believe and therefore speak, 14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead(EJ) will also raise us with Jesus(EK) and present us with you to himself.(EL) 15 All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving(EM) to overflow to the glory of God.

16 Therefore we do not lose heart.(EN) Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly(EO) we are being renewed(EP) day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.(EQ) 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen,(ER) since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Awaiting the New Body

For we know that if the earthly(ES) tent(ET) we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan,(EU) longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling,(EV) because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan(EW) and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling,(EX) so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.(EY)

Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight.(EZ) We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.(FA) So we make it our goal to please him,(FB) whether we are at home in the body or away from it. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us(FC) for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

The Ministry of Reconciliation

11 Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord,(FD) we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.(FE) 12 We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again,(FF) but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us,(FG) so that you can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart. 13 If we are “out of our mind,”(FH) as some say, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.(FI) 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves(FJ) but for him who died for them(FK) and was raised again.

16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly(FL) point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,(FM) the new creation(FN) has come:[h] The old has gone, the new is here!(FO) 18 All this is from God,(FP) who reconciled us to himself through Christ(FQ) and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them.(FR) And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors,(FS) as though God were making his appeal through us.(FT) We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.(FU) 21 God made him who had no sin(FV) to be sin[i] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.(FW)

As God’s co-workers(FX) we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain.(FY) For he says,

“In the time of my favor I heard you,
and in the day of salvation I helped you.”[j](FZ)

I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.

Paul’s Hardships

We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path,(GA) so that our ministry will not be discredited. Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments(GB) and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger;(GC) in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit(GD) and in sincere love;(GE) in truthful speech(GF) and in the power of God;(GG) with weapons of righteousness(GH) in the right hand and in the left; through glory and dishonor,(GI) bad report(GJ) and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors;(GK) known, yet regarded as unknown; dying,(GL) and yet we live on;(GM) beaten, and yet not killed; 10 sorrowful, yet always rejoicing;(GN) poor, yet making many rich;(GO) having nothing,(GP) and yet possessing everything.(GQ)

11 We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you.(GR) 12 We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. 13 As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children(GS)—open wide your hearts(GT) also.

Warning Against Idolatry

14 Do not be yoked together(GU) with unbelievers.(GV) For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?(GW) 15 What harmony is there between Christ and Belial[k]?(GX) Or what does a believer(GY) have in common with an unbeliever?(GZ) 16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols?(HA) For we are the temple(HB) of the living God.(HC) As God has said:

“I will live with them
    and walk among them,
and I will be their God,
and they will be my people.”[l](HD)

17 Therefore,

“Come out from them(HE)
    and be separate,
says the Lord.
Touch no unclean thing,
    and I will receive you.”[m](HF)

18 And,

“I will be a Father to you,
and you will be my sons and daughters,(HG)
says the Lord Almighty.”[n](HH)

Therefore, since we have these promises,(HI) dear friends,(HJ) let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness(HK) out of reverence for God.

Paul’s Joy Over the Church’s Repentance

Make room for us in your hearts.(HL) We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one. I do not say this to condemn you; I have said before that you have such a place in our hearts(HM) that we would live or die with you. I have spoken to you with great frankness; I take great pride in you.(HN) I am greatly encouraged;(HO) in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.(HP)

For when we came into Macedonia,(HQ) we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn(HR)—conflicts on the outside, fears within.(HS) But God, who comforts the downcast,(HT) comforted us by the coming of Titus,(HU) and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.

Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter,(HV) I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while— yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation(HW) and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 11 See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern,(HX) what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. 12 So even though I wrote to you,(HY) it was neither on account of the one who did the wrong(HZ) nor on account of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are. 13 By all this we are encouraged.

In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus(IA) was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you. 14 I had boasted to him about you,(IB) and you have not embarrassed me. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting about you to Titus(IC) has proved to be true as well. 15 And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient,(ID) receiving him with fear and trembling.(IE) 16 I am glad I can have complete confidence in you.(IF)

The Collection for the Lord’s People

And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian(IG) churches. In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.(IH) For I testify that they gave as much as they were able,(II) and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing(IJ) in this service(IK) to the Lord’s people.(IL) And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us. So we urged(IM) Titus,(IN) just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion(IO) this act of grace on your part. But since you excel in everything(IP)—in faith, in speech, in knowledge,(IQ) in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you[o]—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.

I am not commanding you,(IR) but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. For you know the grace(IS) of our Lord Jesus Christ,(IT) that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor,(IU) so that you through his poverty might become rich.(IV)

10 And here is my judgment(IW) about what is best for you in this matter. Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so.(IX) 11 Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness(IY) to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. 12 For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has,(IZ) not according to what one does not have.

13 Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. 14 At the present time your plenty will supply what they need,(JA) so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality, 15 as it is written: “The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.”[p](JB)

Titus Sent to Receive the Collection

16 Thanks be to God,(JC) who put into the heart(JD) of Titus(JE) the same concern I have for you. 17 For Titus not only welcomed our appeal, but he is coming to you with much enthusiasm and on his own initiative.(JF) 18 And we are sending along with him the brother(JG) who is praised by all the churches(JH) for his service to the gospel.(JI) 19 What is more, he was chosen by the churches to accompany us(JJ) as we carry the offering, which we administer in order to honor the Lord himself and to show our eagerness to help.(JK) 20 We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer this liberal gift. 21 For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man.(JL)

22 In addition, we are sending with them our brother who has often proved to us in many ways that he is zealous, and now even more so because of his great confidence in you. 23 As for Titus,(JM) he is my partner(JN) and co-worker(JO) among you; as for our brothers,(JP) they are representatives of the churches and an honor to Christ. 24 Therefore show these men the proof of your love and the reason for our pride in you,(JQ) so that the churches can see it.

There is no need(JR) for me to write to you about this service(JS) to the Lord’s people.(JT) For I know your eagerness to help,(JU) and I have been boasting(JV) about it to the Macedonians, telling them that since last year(JW) you in Achaia(JX) were ready to give; and your enthusiasm has stirred most of them to action. But I am sending the brothers(JY) in order that our boasting about you in this matter should not prove hollow, but that you may be ready, as I said you would be.(JZ) For if any Macedonians(KA) come with me and find you unprepared, we—not to say anything about you—would be ashamed of having been so confident. So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers(KB) to visit you in advance and finish the arrangements for the generous gift you had promised. Then it will be ready as a generous gift,(KC) not as one grudgingly given.(KD)

Generosity Encouraged

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.(KE) Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give,(KF) not reluctantly or under compulsion,(KG) for God loves a cheerful giver.(KH) And God is able(KI) to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need,(KJ) you will abound in every good work. As it is written:

“They have freely scattered their gifts(KK) to the poor;
    their righteousness endures forever.”[q](KL)

10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food(KM) will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.(KN) 11 You will be enriched(KO) in every way so that you can be generous(KP) on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.(KQ)

12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs(KR) of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.(KS) 13 Because of the service(KT) by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God(KU) for the obedience that accompanies your confession(KV) of the gospel of Christ,(KW) and for your generosity(KX) in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14 And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15 Thanks be to God(KY) for his indescribable gift!(KZ)

Paul’s Defense of His Ministry

10 By the humility and gentleness(LA) of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul,(LB) who am “timid” when face to face with you, but “bold” toward you when away! I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold(LC) as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world.(LD) For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.(LE) The weapons we fight with(LF) are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power(LG) to demolish strongholds.(LH) We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God,(LI) and we take captive every thought to make it obedient(LJ) to Christ. And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.(LK)

You are judging by appearances.[r](LL) If anyone is confident that they belong to Christ,(LM) they should consider again that we belong to Christ just as much as they do.(LN) So even if I boast somewhat freely about the authority the Lord gave us(LO) for building you up rather than tearing you down,(LP) I will not be ashamed of it. I do not want to seem to be trying to frighten you with my letters. 10 For some say, “His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive(LQ) and his speaking amounts to nothing.”(LR) 11 Such people should realize that what we are in our letters when we are absent, we will be in our actions when we are present.

12 We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves.(LS) When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. 13 We, however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the sphere of service God himself has assigned to us,(LT) a sphere that also includes you. 14 We are not going too far in our boasting, as would be the case if we had not come to you, for we did get as far as you(LU) with the gospel of Christ.(LV) 15 Neither do we go beyond our limits(LW) by boasting of work done by others.(LX) Our hope is that, as your faith continues to grow,(LY) our sphere of activity among you will greatly expand, 16 so that we can preach the gospel(LZ) in the regions beyond you.(MA) For we do not want to boast about work already done in someone else’s territory. 17 But, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”[s](MB) 18 For it is not the one who commends himself(MC) who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.(MD)

Paul and the False Apostles

11 I hope you will put up with(ME) me in a little foolishness.(MF) Yes, please put up with me! I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband,(MG) to Christ, so that I might present you(MH) as a pure virgin to him. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning,(MI) your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached,(MJ) or if you receive a different spirit(MK) from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel(ML) from the one you accepted, you put up with it(MM) easily enough.

I do not think I am in the least inferior to those “super-apostles.”[t](MN) I may indeed be untrained as a speaker,(MO) but I do have knowledge.(MP) We have made this perfectly clear to you in every way. Was it a sin(MQ) for me to lower myself in order to elevate you by preaching the gospel of God(MR) to you free of charge?(MS) I robbed other churches by receiving support from them(MT) so as to serve you. And when I was with you and needed something, I was not a burden to anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied what I needed.(MU) I have kept myself from being a burden to you(MV) in any way, and will continue to do so. 10 As surely as the truth of Christ is in me,(MW) nobody in the regions of Achaia(MX) will stop this boasting(MY) of mine. 11 Why? Because I do not love you? God knows(MZ) I do!(NA)

12 And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about. 13 For such people are false apostles,(NB) deceitful(NC) workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ.(ND) 14 And no wonder, for Satan(NE) himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.(NF)

Paul Boasts About His Sufferings

16 I repeat: Let no one take me for a fool.(NG) But if you do, then tolerate me just as you would a fool, so that I may do a little boasting. 17 In this self-confident boasting I am not talking as the Lord would,(NH) but as a fool.(NI) 18 Since many are boasting in the way the world does,(NJ) I too will boast.(NK) 19 You gladly put up with(NL) fools since you are so wise!(NM) 20 In fact, you even put up with(NN) anyone who enslaves you(NO) or exploits you or takes advantage of you or puts on airs or slaps you in the face. 21 To my shame I admit that we were too weak(NP) for that!

Whatever anyone else dares to boast about—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast about.(NQ) 22 Are they Hebrews? So am I.(NR) Are they Israelites? So am I.(NS) Are they Abraham’s descendants? So am I.(NT) 23 Are they servants of Christ?(NU) (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder,(NV) been in prison more frequently,(NW) been flogged more severely,(NX) and been exposed to death again and again.(NY) 24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes(NZ) minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods,(OA) once I was pelted with stones,(OB) three times I was shipwrecked,(OC) I spent a night and a day in the open sea, 26 I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews,(OD) in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city,(OE) in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers.(OF) 27 I have labored and toiled(OG) and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food;(OH) I have been cold and naked. 28 Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches.(OI) 29 Who is weak, and I do not feel weak?(OJ) Who is led into sin,(OK) and I do not inwardly burn?

30 If I must boast, I will boast(OL) of the things that show my weakness.(OM) 31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is to be praised forever,(ON) knows(OO) that I am not lying. 32 In Damascus the governor under King Aretas had the city of the Damascenes guarded in order to arrest me.(OP) 33 But I was lowered in a basket from a window in the wall and slipped through his hands.(OQ)

Paul’s Vision and His Thorn

12 I must go on boasting.(OR) Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations(OS) from the Lord. I know a man in Christ(OT) who fourteen years ago was caught up(OU) to the third heaven.(OV) Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows.(OW) And I know that this man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows— was caught up(OX) to paradise(OY) and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell. I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses.(OZ) Even if I should choose to boast,(PA) I would not be a fool,(PB) because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say, or because of these surpassingly great revelations.(PC) Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh,(PD) a messenger of Satan,(PE) to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.(PF) But he said to me, “My grace(PG) is sufficient for you, for my power(PH) is made perfect in weakness.(PI)(PJ) Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight(PK) in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships,(PL) in persecutions,(PM) in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.(PN)

Paul’s Concern for the Corinthians

11 I have made a fool of myself,(PO) but you drove me to it. I ought to have been commended by you, for I am not in the least inferior to the “super-apostles,”[u](PP) even though I am nothing.(PQ) 12 I persevered in demonstrating among you the marks of a true apostle, including signs, wonders and miracles.(PR) 13 How were you inferior to the other churches, except that I was never a burden to you?(PS) Forgive me this wrong!(PT)

14 Now I am ready to visit you for the third time,(PU) and I will not be a burden to you, because what I want is not your possessions but you. After all, children should not have to save up for their parents,(PV) but parents for their children.(PW) 15 So I will very gladly spend for you everything I have and expend myself as well.(PX) If I love you more,(PY) will you love me less? 16 Be that as it may, I have not been a burden to you.(PZ) Yet, crafty fellow that I am, I caught you by trickery! 17 Did I exploit you through any of the men I sent to you? 18 I urged(QA) Titus(QB) to go to you and I sent our brother(QC) with him. Titus did not exploit you, did he? Did we not walk in the same footsteps by the same Spirit?

19 Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you? We have been speaking in the sight of God(QD) as those in Christ; and everything we do, dear friends,(QE) is for your strengthening.(QF) 20 For I am afraid that when I come(QG) I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be.(QH) I fear that there may be discord,(QI) jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition,(QJ) slander,(QK) gossip,(QL) arrogance(QM) and disorder.(QN) 21 I am afraid that when I come again my God will humble me before you, and I will be grieved(QO) over many who have sinned earlier(QP) and have not repented of the impurity, sexual sin and debauchery(QQ) in which they have indulged.

Final Warnings

13 This will be my third visit to you.(QR) “Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.”[v](QS) I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent:(QT) On my return I will not spare(QU) those who sinned earlier(QV) or any of the others, since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me.(QW) He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you. For to be sure, he was crucified in weakness,(QX) yet he lives by God’s power.(QY) Likewise, we are weak(QZ) in him, yet by God’s power we will live with him(RA) in our dealing with you.

Examine yourselves(RB) to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.(RC) Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you(RD)—unless, of course, you fail the test? And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test. Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed.
