13 I Judas konge Joas', Akasjas sønns tre og tyvende år blev Joakas, Jehus sønn, konge over Israel i Samaria, og han regjerte i sytten år.
2 Han gjorde hvad ondt var i Herrens øine, og fulgte Jeroboam, Nebats sønn, i hans synder, som han hadde fått Israel til å gjøre; dem vek han ikke fra.
3 Da optendtes Herrens vrede mot Israel, og han gav dem i den syriske konge Hasaels og hans sønn Benhadads hånd hele tiden.
4 Men Joakas bønnfalt Herren, og Herren hørte ham, fordi han så Israels trengsel; for syrernes konge trengte dem.
5 Og Herren gav Israel en frelser, så de slapp ut av syrernes herredømme, og Israels barn bodde i sine hjem som før.
6 Allikevel vek de ikke fra Jeroboams huses synder, som han hadde fått Israel til å gjøre; i dem vandret de; ja, endog Astarte-billedet blev stående i Samaria.
7 [Herren bønnhørte Joakas] for han hadde ikke levnet Joakas flere folk enn femti hestfolk og ti vogner og ti tusen fotfolk; for kongen i Syria hadde ødelagt dem og tresket dem til støv.

10 I Judas konge Joas' syv og trettiende år blev Joakas' sønn Joas konge over Israel i Samaria, og han regjerte i seksten år.

14 Da Elisa var falt i den sykdom som han døde av, kom Israels konge Joas ned til ham og bøide sig gråtende over ham og sa: Min far, min far! Israels vogner og ryttere!
15 Da sa Elisa til ham: Hent en bue og nogen piler! Så hentet han en bue og nogen piler til ham.
16 Og han sa til Israels konge: Legg din hånd på buen! Og han la sin hånd på den. Og Elisa la sine hender på kongens hender.
17 Så sa han: Lukk op vinduet mot øst! Og han lukket det op. Da sa Elisa: Skyt! Så skjøt han. Da sa han: En frelsens pil fra Herren, en frelsens pil mot syrerne! Du skal slå syrerne i Afek og gjøre ende på dem.
18 Så sa han: Ta pilene! Og han tok dem. Da sa han til Israels konge: Slå på jorden! Og han slo tre ganger; så holdt han op.
19 Da blev den Guds mann vred på ham og sa: Du burde ha slått fem eller seks ganger; da hadde du slått syrerne og gjort ende på dem; men nu skal du bare slå syrerne tre ganger.
20 Så døde Elisa, og de begravde ham. Ved årets begynnelse pleide moabittiske herjeflokker å falle inn i landet.
21 Så hendte det mens de var i ferd med å begrave en mann, at de fikk se en herjeflokk; da kastet de mannen ned i Elisas grav, og med det samme mannen rørte ved Elisas ben, blev han levende igjen og reiste sig op på sine føtter.
22 Kongen i Syria Hasael hadde trengt Israel så lenge Joakas levde.
23 Men Herren var dem nådig og forbarmet sig over dem og vendte sig til dem for den pakts skyld som han hadde gjort med Abraham, Isak og Jakob; han vilde ikke ødelegge dem, og han kastet dem ennu ikke bort fra sitt åsyn.
24 Men da kongen i Syria Hasael var død, og hans sønn Benhadad var blitt konge i hans sted,
25 tok Joas, Joakas' sønn, de byer som Hasael hadde tatt fra hans far Joakas i krigen, tilbake fra Benhadad, Hasaels sønn. Tre ganger slo Joas ham og tok tilbake de byer som hadde hørt Israel til.
14 I Israels konge Joas', Joakas' sønns annet år blev Amasja konge; han var sønn av Judas konge Joas.
2 Han var fem og tyve år gammel da han blev konge, og regjerte ni og tyve år i Jerusalem; hans mor hette Joaddan og var fra Jerusalem.
3 Han gjorde hvad rett var i Herrens øine, men ikke som hans stamfar David; han gjorde aldeles som sin far Joas.
4 Dog blev offerhaugene ikke nedlagt; folket blev ved å ofre og brenne røkelse på haugene.
5 Så snart han hadde fått kongedømmet fast i sin hånd, slo han ihjel dem av sine tjenere som hadde slått ihjel hans far kongen.
6 Men mordernes barn drepte han ikke, efter det som er skrevet i Mose lovbok, hvor Herren har gitt dette bud: Foreldre skal ikke lide døden for sine barns skyld, og barn ikke lide døden for sine foreldres skyld; men enhver skal dø for sin egen synd.
7 Han slo Edom i Saltdalen, ti tusen mann, og inntok Sela og kalte det Jokte'el, som det heter den dag idag.
8 På den tid sendte Amasja bud til Israels konge Joas, sønn av Joakas, Jehus sønn, og lot si: Kom, la oss prøve styrke med hverandre!
9 Men Israels konge Joas sendte bud til Judas konge Amasja og svarte: Tornebusken på Libanon sendte bud til sederen på Libanon og lot si: La min sønn få din datter til hustru! Men de ville dyr på Libanon fór frem og trådte tornebusken ned.
10 Du har slått Edom, og derfor er du blitt overmodig; la dig nøie med den ære og bli hjemme! Hvorfor vil du kalle ulykken ned over dig, så du går til grunne, både du og Juda med dig?
11 Men Amasja hørte ikke på ham. Da drog Israels konge Joas op, og han og Judas konge Amasja prøvde styrke med hverandre ved Bet-Semes, som hører til Juda.
12 Og Judas menn blev slått av Israels menn, og de flyktet hver til sitt hjem;
13 men Judas konge Amasja, sønn av Joas, Akasjas sønn, blev tatt til fange av Israels konge Joas ved Bet-Semes. Og da de kom til Jerusalem, rev han ned et stykke av Jerusalems mur, fra Efra'im-porten til Hjørneporten, fire hundre alen.
14 Og han tok alt det gull og sølv og alle de kar som fantes i Herrens hus og i skattkammerne i kongens hus, og dessuten gislene; sa vendte han tilbake til Samaria.

16 Og Joas la sig til hvile hos sine fedre og blev begravet i Samaria hos Israels konger, og hans sønn Jeroboam blev konge i hans sted.
17 Judas konge Amasja, Joas' sønn, levde femten år efterat Israels konge Joas, Joakas' sønn, var død.
18 Hvad som ellers er å fortelle om Amasja, det er opskrevet i Judas kongers krønike.
19 De gjorde en sammensvergelse mot ham i Jerusalem, og han flyktet til Lakis; men de sendte folk efter ham til Lakis og drepte ham der.
20 Så kjørte de ham derfra med hester[a], og han blev begravet i Jerusalem hos sine fedre i Davids stad.
21 Og alt Judas folk tok og gjorde Asarja[b], som da var seksten år gammel, til konge i hans far Amasjas sted.
22 Han gjorde Elat til en fast by og vant det tilbake for Juda, efterat kongen hadde lagt sig til hvile hos sine fedre.
23 I Judas konge Amasjas, Joas' sønns femtende år blev Jeroboam, sønn av Israels konge Joas, konge i Samaria, og han regjerte i en og firti år.
24 Han gjorde hvad ondt var i Herrens øine; han vek ikke fra nogen av de synder som Jeroboam, Nebats sønn, hadde gjort og fått Israel til å gjøre.
25 Han vant tilbake Israels landemerker fra der hvor veien går til Hamat, og like til Ødemarks-havet, efter det ord som Herren, Israels Gud, hadde talt ved sin tjener profeten Jonas, Amittais sønn, fra Gat-Hefer.
26 For Herren hadde sett at Israel var stedt i bitter nød, og det var ute både med store og små, og Israel hadde ingen hjelper.
27 Og Herren hadde ikke sagt at han vilde utslette Israels navn under himmelen; derfor frelste han dem ved Jeroboam, Joas' sønn.
28 Hvad som ellers er å fortelle om Jeroboam, om alt det han gjorde, og om hans store gjerninger, hvilke kriger han førte, og hvorledes han vant tilbake til Israel den del av Damaskus og Hamat som før hadde tilhørt Juda, det er opskrevet i Israels kongers krønike.
29 Og Jeroboam la sig til hvile hos sine fedre, hos Israels konger, og hans sønn Sakarja blev konge i hans sted.

Jehoahaz King of Israel
13 In the twenty-third year of Joash son of Ahaziah king of Judah, Jehoahaz son of Jehu became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned seventeen years. 2 He did evil(A) in the eyes of the Lord by following the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit, and he did not turn away from them. 3 So the Lord’s anger(B) burned against Israel, and for a long time he kept them under the power(C) of Hazael king of Aram and Ben-Hadad(D) his son.
4 Then Jehoahaz sought(E) the Lord’s favor, and the Lord listened to him, for he saw(F) how severely the king of Aram was oppressing(G) Israel. 5 The Lord provided a deliverer(H) for Israel, and they escaped from the power of Aram. So the Israelites lived in their own homes as they had before. 6 But they did not turn away from the sins(I) of the house of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit; they continued in them. Also, the Asherah pole[a](J) remained standing in Samaria.
7 Nothing had been left(K) of the army of Jehoahaz except fifty horsemen, ten chariots and ten thousand foot soldiers, for the king of Aram had destroyed the rest and made them like the dust(L) at threshing time.
8 As for the other events of the reign of Jehoahaz, all he did and his achievements, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 9 Jehoahaz rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria. And Jehoash[b] his son succeeded him as king.
Jehoash King of Israel
10 In the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah, Jehoash son of Jehoahaz became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned sixteen years. 11 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord and did not turn away from any of the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit; he continued in them.
12 As for the other events of the reign of Jehoash, all he did and his achievements, including his war against Amaziah(M) king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the annals(N) of the kings of Israel? 13 Jehoash rested with his ancestors, and Jeroboam(O) succeeded him on the throne. Jehoash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.
14 Now Elisha had been suffering from the illness from which he died. Jehoash king of Israel went down to see him and wept over him. “My father! My father!” he cried. “The chariots(P) and horsemen of Israel!”
15 Elisha said, “Get a bow and some arrows,”(Q) and he did so. 16 “Take the bow in your hands,” he said to the king of Israel. When he had taken it, Elisha put his hands on the king’s hands.
17 “Open the east window,” he said, and he opened it. “Shoot!”(R) Elisha said, and he shot. “The Lord’s arrow of victory, the arrow of victory over Aram!” Elisha declared. “You will completely destroy the Arameans at Aphek.”(S)
18 Then he said, “Take the arrows,” and the king took them. Elisha told him, “Strike the ground.” He struck it three times and stopped. 19 The man of God was angry with him and said, “You should have struck the ground five or six times; then you would have defeated Aram and completely destroyed it. But now you will defeat it only three times.”(T)
20 Elisha died and was buried.
Now Moabite raiders(U) used to enter the country every spring. 21 Once while some Israelites were burying a man, suddenly they saw a band of raiders; so they threw the man’s body into Elisha’s tomb. When the body touched Elisha’s bones, the man came to life(V) and stood up on his feet.
22 Hazael king of Aram oppressed(W) Israel throughout the reign of Jehoahaz. 23 But the Lord was gracious to them and had compassion and showed concern for them because of his covenant(X) with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. To this day he has been unwilling to destroy(Y) them or banish them from his presence.(Z)
24 Hazael king of Aram died, and Ben-Hadad(AA) his son succeeded him as king. 25 Then Jehoash son of Jehoahaz recaptured from Ben-Hadad son of Hazael the towns he had taken in battle from his father Jehoahaz. Three times(AB) Jehoash defeated him, and so he recovered(AC) the Israelite towns.
Amaziah King of Judah(AD)(AE)
14 In the second year of Jehoash[c] son of Jehoahaz king of Israel, Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah began to reign. 2 He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan; she was from Jerusalem. 3 He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not as his father David had done. In everything he followed the example of his father Joash. 4 The high places,(AF) however, were not removed; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.
5 After the kingdom was firmly in his grasp, he executed(AG) the officials(AH) who had murdered his father the king. 6 Yet he did not put the children of the assassins to death, in accordance with what is written in the Book of the Law(AI) of Moses where the Lord commanded: “Parents are not to be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin.”[d](AJ)
7 He was the one who defeated ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt(AK) and captured Sela(AL) in battle, calling it Joktheel, the name it has to this day.
8 Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, with the challenge: “Come, let us face each other in battle.”
9 But Jehoash king of Israel replied to Amaziah king of Judah: “A thistle(AM) in Lebanon sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’ Then a wild beast in Lebanon came along and trampled the thistle underfoot. 10 You have indeed defeated Edom and now you are arrogant.(AN) Glory in your victory, but stay at home! Why ask for trouble and cause your own downfall and that of Judah also?”
11 Amaziah, however, would not listen, so Jehoash king of Israel attacked. He and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth Shemesh(AO) in Judah. 12 Judah was routed by Israel, and every man fled to his home.(AP) 13 Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Ahaziah, at Beth Shemesh. Then Jehoash went to Jerusalem and broke down the wall(AQ) of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate(AR) to the Corner Gate(AS)—a section about four hundred cubits long.[e] 14 He took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the temple of the Lord and in the treasuries of the royal palace. He also took hostages and returned to Samaria.
15 As for the other events of the reign of Jehoash, what he did and his achievements, including his war(AT) against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 16 Jehoash rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. And Jeroboam his son succeeded him as king.
17 Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah lived for fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel. 18 As for the other events of Amaziah’s reign, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah?
19 They conspired(AU) against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish,(AV) but they sent men after him to Lachish and killed him there. 20 He was brought back by horse(AW) and was buried in Jerusalem with his ancestors, in the City of David.
21 Then all the people of Judah took Azariah,[f](AX) who was sixteen years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah. 22 He was the one who rebuilt Elath(AY) and restored it to Judah after Amaziah rested with his ancestors.
Jeroboam II King of Israel
23 In the fifteenth year of Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah, Jeroboam(AZ) son of Jehoash king of Israel became king in Samaria, and he reigned forty-one years. 24 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord and did not turn away from any of the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit.(BA) 25 He was the one who restored the boundaries of Israel from Lebo Hamath(BB) to the Dead Sea,[g](BC) in accordance with the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, spoken through his servant Jonah(BD) son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath Hepher.
26 The Lord had seen how bitterly everyone in Israel, whether slave or free,(BE) was suffering;[h](BF) there was no one to help them.(BG) 27 And since the Lord had not said he would blot out(BH) the name of Israel from under heaven, he saved(BI) them by the hand of Jeroboam son of Jehoash.
28 As for the other events of Jeroboam’s reign, all he did, and his military achievements, including how he recovered for Israel both Damascus(BJ) and Hamath,(BK) which had belonged to Judah, are they not written in the book of the annals(BL) of the kings of Israel? 29 Jeroboam rested with his ancestors, the kings of Israel. And Zechariah his son succeeded him as king.
