28 Then he said to them, “You know how (A)unlawful it is for a Jewish man to keep company with or go to one of another nation. But (B)God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean. 29 Therefore I came without objection as soon as I was sent for. I ask, then, for what reason have you sent for me?”

30 So Cornelius said, [a]“Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and behold, (C)a man stood before me (D)in bright clothing, 31 and said, ‘Cornelius, (E)your prayer has been heard, and (F)your [b]alms are remembered in the sight of God. 32 Send therefore to Joppa and call Simon here, whose surname is Peter. He is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea. [c]When he comes, he will speak to you.’ 33 So I sent to you immediately, and you have done well to come. Now therefore, we are all present before God, to hear all the things commanded you by God.”

Preaching to Cornelius’ Household

34 Then Peter opened his mouth and said: (G)“In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. 35 But (H)in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is (I)accepted by Him. 36 The word which God sent to the [d]children of Israel, (J)preaching peace through Jesus Christ—(K)He is Lord of all— 37 that word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and (L)began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: 38 how (M)God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who (N)went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, (O)for God was with Him. 39 And we are (P)witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom [e]they (Q)killed by hanging on a tree. 40 Him (R)God raised up on the third day, and showed Him openly, 41 (S)not to all the people, but to witnesses chosen before by God, even to us (T)who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead. 42 And (U)He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify (V)that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge (W)of the living and the dead. 43 (X)To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, (Y)whoever believes in Him will receive (Z)remission[f] of sins.”

28 He said to them: “You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile.(A) But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean.(B) 29 So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?”

30 Cornelius answered: “Three days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes(C) stood before me 31 and said, ‘Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor. 32 Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.’ 33 So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us.”

34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism(D) 35 but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.(E) 36 You know the message(F) God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news(G) of peace(H) through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.(I) 37 You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— 38 how God anointed(J) Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing(K) all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.(L)

39 “We are witnesses(M) of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross,(N) 40 but God raised him from the dead(O) on the third day and caused him to be seen. 41 He was not seen by all the people,(P) but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate(Q) and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people(R) and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.(S) 43 All the prophets testify about him(T) that everyone(U) who believes(V) in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”(W)
