2 He asked him for letters to take with him[a] to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any men or women belonging to the Way, he might bring them in chains to Jerusalem. 3 As Saul[b] traveled along and was approaching Damascus, a light from heaven suddenly flashed around him. 4 He dropped to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul! Why are you persecuting me?”

New International Version
2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus,(A) so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way,(B) whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. 3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him.(C) 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice(D) say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”
