Amos 1-5
Holman Christian Standard Bible
1 The words of Amos, who was one of the sheep breeders[a](A) from Tekoa(B)—what he saw regarding Israel in the days of Uzziah,(C) king of Judah, and Jeroboam(D) son of Jehoash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.(E)
2 He said:
The Lord roars(F) from Zion
and raises His voice from Jerusalem;
the pastures of the shepherds mourn,[b](G)
and the summit of Carmel(H) withers.
Judgment on Israel’s Neighbors
3 The Lord says:
I will not relent from punishing Damascus(I)
for three crimes, even four,(J)
because they threshed Gilead with iron sledges.
4 Therefore, I will send fire against Hazael’s palace,
and it will consume Ben-hadad’s(K) citadels.
5 I will break down the gates[c](L) of Damascus.
I will cut off the ruler from the Valley of Aven,
and the one who wields the scepter from Beth-eden.
The people of Aram will be exiled to Kir.(M)
The Lord has spoken.
6 The Lord says:
I will not relent from punishing Gaza(N)
for three crimes, even four,
because they exiled a whole community,
handing them over to Edom.
7 Therefore, I will send fire against the walls of Gaza,
and it will consume its citadels.
8 I will cut off the ruler from Ashdod,(O)
and the one who wields the scepter from Ashkelon.(P)
I will also turn My hand against Ekron,
and the remainder of the Philistines(Q) will perish.
The Lord God has spoken.
9 The Lord says:
I will not relent from punishing Tyre(R)
for three crimes, even four,
because they handed over
a whole community of exiles to Edom
and broke[d] a treaty of brotherhood.(S)
10 Therefore, I will send fire(T) against the walls of Tyre,
and it will consume its citadels.
11 The Lord says:
I will not relent from punishing Edom(U)
for three crimes, even four,
because he pursued his brother with the sword.(V)
He stifled his compassion,
his anger tore at them(W) continually,
and he harbored his rage incessantly.
12 Therefore, I will send fire against Teman,(X)
and it will consume the citadels of Bozrah.
13 The Lord says:
I will not relent from punishing the Ammonites(Y)
for three crimes, even four,
because they ripped open
the pregnant women of Gilead(Z)
in order to enlarge their territory.(AA)
14 Therefore, I will set fire to the walls of Rabbah,(AB)
and it will consume its citadels.
There will be shouting on the day of battle(AC)
and a violent wind on the day of the storm.(AD)
15 Their king and his princes
will go into exile together.(AE)
The Lord has spoken.
2 The Lord says:
I will not relent from punishing Moab(AF)
for three crimes, even four,
because he burned the bones
of the king of Edom to lime.(AG)
2 Therefore, I will send fire against Moab,
and it will consume the citadels of Kerioth.(AH)
Moab will die with a tumult,(AI)
with shouting and the sound of the ram’s horn.
3 I will cut off the judge(AJ) from the land
and kill all its officials(AK) with him.
The Lord has spoken.
Judgment on Judah
4 The Lord says:
I will not relent from punishing Judah(AL)
for three crimes, even four,
because they have rejected the instruction of the Lord(AM)
and have not kept His statutes.(AN)
The lies(AO) that their ancestors followed(AP)
have led them astray.
5 Therefore, I will send fire(AQ) against Judah,
and it will consume the citadels of Jerusalem.
Judgment on Israel
6 The Lord says:
I will not relent from punishing Israel(AR)
for three crimes, even four,
because they sell a righteous person for silver
and a needy person for a pair of sandals.(AS)
7 They trample the heads of the poor(AT)
on the dust of the ground
and block the path of the needy.(AU)
A man and his father have sexual relations
with the same girl,(AV)
profaning My holy name.(AW)
8 They stretch out beside every altar(AX)
on garments taken as collateral,(AY)
and in the house of their God,
they drink wine obtained through fines.(AZ)
9 Yet I destroyed the Amorite(BA) as Israel advanced;
his height(BB) was like the cedars,
and he was as sturdy as the oaks;
I destroyed his fruit(BC) above and his roots beneath.
10 And I brought you from the land of Egypt(BD)
and led you 40 years in the wilderness(BE)
in order to possess the land of the Amorite.(BF)
11 I raised up some of your sons as prophets(BG)
and some of your young men as Nazirites.(BH)
Is this not the case, Israelites?
This is the Lord’s declaration.
12 But you made the Nazirites drink wine
and commanded the prophets,
“Do not prophesy.”(BI)
13 Look, I am about to crush[e] you in your place(BJ)
as a wagon full of sheaves crushes grain.
14 Escape will fail the swift,(BK)
the strong one will not prevail by his strength,(BL)
and the brave will not save his life.
15 The archer will not stand his ground,(BM)
the one who is swift of foot
will not save himself,
and the one riding a horse will not save his life.(BN)
16 Even the most courageous of the warriors
will flee naked on that day(BO)—
this is the Lord’s declaration.
God’s Reasons for Punishing Israel
3 Listen to this message that the Lord has spoken against you, Israelites, against the entire clan that I brought from the land of Egypt:(BP)
2 I have known only you(BQ)
out of all the clans of the earth;
therefore, I will punish you for all your iniquities.(BR)
3 Can two walk together(BS)
without agreeing to meet?[f]
4 Does a lion roar(BT) in the forest
when it has no prey?
Does a young lion growl from its lair
unless it has captured something?
5 Does a bird land in a trap on the ground
if there is no bait for it?
Does a trap spring from the ground
when it has caught nothing?
6 If a ram’s horn(BU) is blown in a city,
aren’t people afraid?(BV)
If a disaster(BW) occurs in a city,
hasn’t the Lord done it?(BX)
7 Indeed, the Lord God does nothing
without revealing His counsel
to His servants the prophets.(BY)
8 A lion has roared;(BZ)
who will not fear?
The Lord God has spoken;(CA)
who will not prophesy?(CB)
9 Proclaim on the citadels in Ashdod(CC)
and on the citadels in the land of Egypt:
Assemble on the mountains of Samaria(CD)
and see the great turmoil in the city
and the acts of oppression within it.(CE)
10 The people are incapable of doing right(CF)—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
those who store up violence and destruction(CG)
in their citadels.
11 Therefore, the Lord God says:
An enemy(CH) will surround the land;
he will destroy(CI) your strongholds
and plunder your citadels.(CJ)
12 The Lord says:
As the shepherd snatches two legs
or a piece of an ear
from the lion’s mouth,(CK)
so the Israelites who live in Samaria
will be rescued
with only the corner of a bed(CL)
or the[g] cushion[h] of a couch.[i](CM)
13 Listen and testify(CN) against the house of Jacob—
this is the declaration of the Lord God,
the God of Hosts.
14 I will punish the altars of Bethel(CO)
on the day I punish Israel for its crimes;
the horns of the altar(CP) will be cut off
and fall to the ground.(CQ)
15 I will demolish the winter house(CR)
and the summer house;(CS)
the houses inlaid with ivory(CT) will be destroyed,
and the great houses(CU) will come to an end.
This is the Lord’s declaration.
Social and Spiritual Corruption
4 Listen to this message, you cows of Bashan(CV)
who are on the hill of Samaria,
women who oppress the poor
and crush the needy,(CW)
who say to their husbands,
“Bring us something to drink.”(CX)
2 The Lord God has sworn(CY) by His holiness:(CZ)
Look, the days are coming[j]
when you will be taken away with hooks,(DA)
every last one of you with fishhooks.(DB)
3 You will go through breaches in the wall,(DC)
each woman straight ahead,
and you will be driven along toward Harmon.
This is the Lord’s declaration.
4 Come to Bethel and rebel;
rebel even more at Gilgal!(DD)
Bring your sacrifices every morning,(DE)
your tenths every three days.
5 Offer leavened bread as a thank offering,(DF)
and loudly proclaim your freewill offerings,(DG)
for that is what you Israelites love to do!(DH)
This is the Lord’s declaration.
God’s Discipline and Israel’s Apostasy
6 I gave you absolutely nothing to eat[k](DI)
in all your cities,
a shortage of food in all your communities,
yet you did not return to Me.(DJ)
This is the Lord’s declaration.
7 I also withheld the rain from you(DK)
while there were still three months until harvest.
I sent rain on one city
but no rain on another.(DL)
One field received rain
while a field with no rain withered.(DM)
8 Two or three cities staggered
to another city to drink water(DN)
but were not satisfied,(DO)
yet you did not return(DP) to Me.
This is the Lord’s declaration.
9 I struck you with blight and mildew;(DQ)
the locust devoured(DR)
your many gardens and vineyards,
your fig trees and olive trees,(DS)
yet you did not return to Me.(DT)
This is the Lord’s declaration.
10 I sent plagues like those of Egypt;(DU)
I killed your young men with the sword,(DV)
along with your captured horses.(DW)
I caused the stench of your camp
to fill your nostrils,(DX)
yet you did not return to Me.(DY)
This is the Lord’s declaration.
11 I overthrew some of you
as I[l] overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah,(DZ)
and you were like a burning stick
snatched from a fire,(EA)
yet you did not return to Me(EB)—
this is the Lord’s declaration.
12 Therefore, Israel, that is what I will do to you,
and since I will do that to you,
Israel, prepare to meet your God!(EC)
13 He is here:
the One who forms the mountains,(ED)
creates the wind,(EE)
and reveals His[m] thoughts to man,(EF)
the One who makes the dawn out of darkness
and strides on the heights of the earth.(EG)
Yahweh, the God of Hosts, is His name.(EH)
Lamentation for Israel
5 Listen to this message that I am singing for you, a lament,(EI) house of Israel:
2 She has fallen;
Virgin Israel(EJ) will never rise again.(EK)
She lies abandoned on her land,
with no one to raise her up.(EL)
3 For the Lord God says:
The city that marches out a thousand strong
will have only a hundred left,(EM)
and the one that marches out a hundred strong
will have only ten left(EN) in the house of Israel.
Seek God and Live
4 For the Lord says to the house of Israel:
Seek Me and live!(EO)
5 Do not seek Bethel(EP)
or go to Gilgal(EQ)
or journey to Beer-sheba,(ER)
for Gilgal will certainly go into exile,
and Bethel will come to nothing.
6 Seek Yahweh(ES) and live,
or He will spread like fire(ET)
throughout the house of Joseph;
it will consume everything,
with no one at Bethel to extinguish it.(EU)
7 Those who turn justice into wormwood(EV)
throw righteousness to the ground.
8 The One who made the Pleiades and Orion,(EW)
who turns darkness[n] into dawn(EX)
and darkens day into night,(EY)
who summons the waters of the sea(EZ)
and pours them out over the face of the earth(FA)—
Yahweh is His name.(FB)
9 He brings destruction[o] on the strong,[p](FC)
and it falls on the stronghold.(FD)
10 They hate the one who convicts the guilty(FE)
at the city gate
and despise(FF) the one who speaks with integrity.
11 Therefore, because you trample on the poor(FG)
and exact a grain tax from him,
you will never live in the houses of cut stone(FH)
you have built;
you will never drink the wine
from the lush vineyards
you have planted.(FI)
12 For I know your crimes are many
and your sins innumerable.
They oppress the righteous,(FJ) take a bribe,
and deprive the poor of justice(FK) at the gates.
13 Therefore, the wise person will keep silent[q](FL)
at such a time,
for the days are evil.
14 Seek good and not evil
so that you may live,
and the Lord, the God of Hosts,
will be with you,
as you have claimed.(FM)
15 Hate evil and love good;(FN)
establish justice in the gate.(FO)
Perhaps the Lord, the God of Hosts, will be gracious(FP)
to the remnant of Joseph.(FQ)
16 Therefore Yahweh, the God of Hosts, the Lord, says:
There will be wailing in all the public squares;(FR)
they will cry out in anguish[r] in all the streets.
The farmer will be called on to mourn,(FS)
and professional mourners[s](FT) to wail.
17 There will be wailing in all the vineyards,(FU)
for I will pass among you.(FV)
The Lord has spoken.
The Day of the Lord
18 Woe to you who long for the Day of the Lord!(FW)
What will the Day of the Lord be for you?
It will be darkness and not light.(FX)
19 It will be like a man who flees from a lion(FY)
only to have a bear confront him.
He goes home and rests his hand against the wall
only to have a snake bite him.
20 Won’t the Day of the Lord
be darkness rather than light,(FZ)
even gloom without any brightness in it?(GA)
21 I hate, I despise your feasts!(GB)
I can’t stand the stench
of your solemn assemblies.(GC)
22 Even if you offer Me
your burnt offerings and grain offerings,(GD)
I will not accept them;(GE)
I will have no regard
for your fellowship offerings of fattened cattle.(GF)
23 Take away from Me the noise of your songs!
I will not listen to the music of your harps.(GG)
24 But let justice flow like water,
and righteousness, like an unfailing stream.(GH)
25 “House of Israel, was it sacrifices and grain offerings that you presented to Me during the 40 years in the wilderness?(GI) 26 But you have taken up[t] Sakkuth[u][v] your king[w] and Kaiwan[x] your star god, images you have made for yourselves.(GJ) 27 So I will send you into exile beyond Damascus.”(GK) Yahweh, the God of Hosts, is His name.(GL) He has spoken.

till the last of the Philistines(Z) are dead,”(AA)
says the Sovereign Lord.(AB)

“For three sins of Tyre,(AC)
even for four, I will not relent.(AD)
Because she sold whole communities of captives to Edom,
disregarding a treaty of brotherhood,(AE)
10 I will send fire on the walls of Tyre
that will consume her fortresses.(AF)”
11 This is what the Lord says:
“For three sins of Edom,(AG)
even for four, I will not relent.
Because he pursued his brother with a sword(AH)

because his anger raged continually
and his fury flamed unchecked,(AI)
12 I will send fire on Teman(AJ)
that will consume the fortresses of Bozrah.(AK)”
13 This is what the Lord says:
“For three sins of Ammon,(AL)
even for four, I will not relent.
Because he ripped open the pregnant women(AM) of Gilead
in order to extend his borders,
14 I will set fire to the walls of Rabbah(AN)
that will consume(AO) her fortresses
amid war cries(AP) on the day of battle,
amid violent winds(AQ) on a stormy day.
15 Her king[e] will go into exile,
he and his officials together,(AR)”
says the Lord.(AS)
2 This is what the Lord says:
“For three sins of Moab,(AT)
even for four, I will not relent.
Because he burned to ashes(AU)
the bones of Edom’s king,
2 I will send fire on Moab
that will consume the fortresses of Kerioth.[f](AV)
Moab will go down in great tumult
amid war cries(AW) and the blast of the trumpet.(AX)
3 I will destroy her ruler(AY)
and kill all her officials with him,”(AZ)
says the Lord.(BA)

Judgment on Israel
6 This is what the Lord says:
“For three sins of Israel,
even for four, I will not relent.(BK)
They sell the innocent for silver,
and the needy for a pair of sandals.(BL)
7 They trample on the heads of the poor
as on the dust of the ground
and deny justice to the oppressed.

though they were tall(BR) as the cedars

I destroyed their fruit above
and their roots(BT) below.
10 I brought you up out of Egypt(BU)
and led(BV) you forty years in the wilderness(BW)
to give you the land of the Amorites.(BX)
11 “I also raised up prophets(BY) from among your children
and Nazirites(BZ) from among your youths.
Is this not true, people of Israel?”
declares the Lord.
12 “But you made the Nazirites drink wine
and commanded the prophets not to prophesy.(CA)
13 “Now then, I will crush you
as a cart crushes when loaded with grain.(CB)
14 The swift will not escape,(CC)
the strong(CD) will not muster their strength,
and the warrior will not save his life.(CE)
15 The archer(CF) will not stand his ground,
the fleet-footed soldier will not get away,
and the horseman(CG) will not save his life.(CH)
16 Even the bravest warriors(CI)
will flee naked on that day,”
declares the Lord.
Witnesses Summoned Against Israel
3 Hear this word, people of Israel, the word the Lord has spoken against you(CJ)—against the whole family I brought up out of Egypt:(CK)
2 “You only have I chosen(CL)
of all the families of the earth;
therefore I will punish(CM) you
for all your sins.(CN)”
3 Do two walk together
unless they have agreed to do so?
4 Does a lion roar(CO) in the thicket
when it has no prey?(CP)
Does it growl in its den
when it has caught nothing?
5 Does a bird swoop down to a trap on the ground
when no bait(CQ) is there?
Does a trap spring up from the ground
if it has not caught anything?
6 When a trumpet(CR) sounds in a city,
do not the people tremble?
When disaster(CS) comes to a city,
has not the Lord caused it?(CT)
7 Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing
without revealing his plan(CU)
to his servants the prophets.(CV)
8 The lion(CW) has roared(CX)—
who will not fear?
The Sovereign Lord has spoken—
who can but prophesy?(CY)
9 Proclaim to the fortresses of Ashdod(CZ)
and to the fortresses of Egypt:
“Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria;(DA)
see the great unrest within her
and the oppression among her people.”
10 “They do not know how to do right,(DB)” declares the Lord,
“who store up in their fortresses(DC)
what they have plundered(DD) and looted.”
11 Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“An enemy will overrun your land,
pull down your strongholds
and plunder your fortresses.(DE)”
12 This is what the Lord says:
“As a shepherd rescues from the lion’s(DF) mouth
only two leg bones or a piece of an ear,
so will the Israelites living in Samaria be rescued,
with only the head of a bed
and a piece of fabric[i] from a couch.[j](DG)”
13 “Hear this and testify(DH) against the descendants of Jacob,” declares the Lord, the Lord God Almighty.
14 “On the day I punish(DI) Israel for her sins,
I will destroy the altars of Bethel;(DJ)
the horns(DK) of the altar will be cut off
and fall to the ground.
15 I will tear down the winter house(DL)
along with the summer house;(DM)
the houses adorned with ivory(DN) will be destroyed
and the mansions(DO) will be demolished,(DP)”
declares the Lord.(DQ)
Israel Has Not Returned to God
4 Hear this word, you cows of Bashan(DR) on Mount Samaria,(DS)
you women who oppress the poor(DT) and crush the needy(DU)
and say to your husbands,(DV) “Bring us some drinks!(DW)”
2 The Sovereign Lord has sworn by his holiness:
“The time(DX) will surely come
when you will be taken away(DY) with hooks,(DZ)
the last of you with fishhooks.[k]
3 You will each go straight out
through breaches in the wall,(EA)
and you will be cast out toward Harmon,[l]”
declares the Lord.
4 “Go to Bethel(EB) and sin;
go to Gilgal(EC) and sin yet more.
Bring your sacrifices every morning,(ED)
your tithes(EE) every three years.[m](EF)
5 Burn leavened bread(EG) as a thank offering
and brag about your freewill offerings(EH)—
boast about them, you Israelites,
for this is what you love to do,”
declares the Sovereign Lord.
6 “I gave you empty stomachs in every city
and lack of bread in every town,
yet you have not returned to me,”
declares the Lord.(EI)
7 “I also withheld(EJ) rain from you
when the harvest was still three months away.
I sent rain on one town,
but withheld it from another.(EK)
One field had rain;
another had none and dried up.
8 People staggered from town to town for water(EL)
but did not get enough(EM) to drink,
yet you have not returned(EN) to me,”
declares the Lord.(EO)
9 “Many times I struck your gardens and vineyards,
destroying them with blight and mildew.(EP)
Locusts(EQ) devoured your fig and olive trees,(ER)
yet you have not returned(ES) to me,”
declares the Lord.
10 “I sent plagues(ET) among you
as I did to Egypt.(EU)
I killed your young men(EV) with the sword,
along with your captured horses.
I filled your nostrils with the stench(EW) of your camps,
yet you have not returned to me,”(EX)
declares the Lord.(EY)
11 “I overthrew some of you
as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.(EZ)
You were like a burning stick(FA) snatched from the fire,
yet you have not returned to me,”
declares the Lord.(FB)
12 “Therefore this is what I will do to you, Israel,
and because I will do this to you, Israel,
prepare to meet your God.”
13 He who forms the mountains,(FC)
who creates the wind,(FD)
and who reveals his thoughts(FE) to mankind,
who turns dawn to darkness,
and treads on the heights of the earth(FF)—
the Lord God Almighty is his name.(FG)
A Lament and Call to Repentance
5 Hear this word, Israel, this lament(FH) I take up concerning you:
2 “Fallen is Virgin(FI) Israel,
never to rise again,
deserted in her own land,
with no one to lift her up.(FJ)”
3 This is what the Sovereign Lord says to Israel:
“Your city that marches out a thousand strong
will have only a hundred left;
your town that marches out a hundred strong
will have only ten left.(FK)”
4 This is what the Lord says to Israel:
“Seek(FL) me and live;(FM)
5 do not seek Bethel,
do not go to Gilgal,(FN)
do not journey to Beersheba.(FO)
For Gilgal will surely go into exile,
and Bethel will be reduced to nothing.[n](FP)”
6 Seek(FQ) the Lord and live,(FR)
or he will sweep through the tribes of Joseph like a fire;(FS)
it will devour them,
and Bethel(FT) will have no one to quench it.(FU)
7 There are those who turn justice into bitterness(FV)
and cast righteousness(FW) to the ground.(FX)
8 He who made the Pleiades and Orion,(FY)
who turns midnight into dawn(FZ)
and darkens day into night,(GA)
who calls for the waters of the sea
and pours them out over the face of the land—
the Lord is his name.(GB)
9 With a blinding flash he destroys the stronghold
and brings the fortified city to ruin.(GC)
10 There are those who hate the one who upholds justice in court(GD)
and detest the one who tells the truth.(GE)
11 You levy a straw tax on the poor(GF)
and impose a tax on their grain.
Therefore, though you have built stone mansions,(GG)
you will not live in them;(GH)
though you have planted lush vineyards,
you will not drink their wine.(GI)
12 For I know how many are your offenses
and how great your sins.(GJ)
There are those who oppress the innocent and take bribes(GK)
and deprive the poor(GL) of justice in the courts.(GM)
13 Therefore the prudent keep quiet(GN) in such times,
for the times are evil.(GO)
14 Seek good, not evil,
that you may live.(GP)
Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you,
just as you say he is.
15 Hate evil,(GQ) love good;(GR)
maintain justice in the courts.(GS)
Perhaps(GT) the Lord God Almighty will have mercy(GU)
on the remnant(GV) of Joseph.
16 Therefore this is what the Lord, the Lord God Almighty, says:
“There will be wailing(GW) in all the streets(GX)
and cries of anguish in every public square.
The farmers(GY) will be summoned to weep
and the mourners to wail.
17 There will be wailing(GZ) in all the vineyards,
for I will pass through(HA) your midst,”
says the Lord.(HB)
The Day of the Lord
18 Woe to you who long
for the day of the Lord!(HC)
Why do you long for the day of the Lord?(HD)
That day will be darkness,(HE) not light.(HF)
19 It will be as though a man fled from a lion
only to meet a bear,(HG)
as though he entered his house
and rested his hand on the wall
only to have a snake bite him.(HH)
20 Will not the day of the Lord be darkness,(HI) not light—
pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness?(HJ)
21 “I hate,(HK) I despise your religious festivals;(HL)
your assemblies(HM) are a stench to me.
22 Even though you bring me burnt offerings(HN) and grain offerings,
I will not accept them.(HO)
Though you bring choice fellowship offerings,
I will have no regard for them.(HP)
23 Away with the noise of your songs!
I will not listen to the music of your harps.(HQ)
24 But let justice(HR) roll on like a river,
righteousness(HS) like a never-failing stream!(HT)
25 “Did you bring me sacrifices(HU) and offerings
forty years(HV) in the wilderness, people of Israel?
26 You have lifted up the shrine of your king,
the pedestal of your idols,(HW)
the star of your god[o]—
which you made for yourselves.
27 Therefore I will send you into exile(HX) beyond Damascus,”
says the Lord, whose name is God Almighty.(HY)
