The Command to Leave Horeb

1 These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in ^(A)the Arabah opposite ^(B)Suph, between ^(C)Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab. ²It is eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to ^(D)Kadesh-barnea. ³^(E)In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the people of Israel according to all that the Lord had given him in commandment to them, ⁴after ^(F)he had defeated Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and ^(G)Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and in ^(H)Edrei. ⁵Beyond the Jordan, ^(I)in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to explain this law, saying, ⁶“The Lord our God said to us in Horeb, ^(J)‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain. ⁷Turn and take your journey, and go to ^(K)the hill country of the Amorites and to all their neighbors in ^(L)the Arabah, ^(M)in the hill country and in the lowland and in the Negeb and ^(N)by the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates. ⁸See, I have set the land before you. Go in and take possession of the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, ^(O)to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their offspring after them.’

Leaders Appointed

⁹“At that time ^(P)I said to you, ‘I am not able to bear you by myself. ¹⁰The Lord your God has multiplied you, and behold, ^(Q)you are today as numerous as the stars of heaven. ¹¹^(R)May the Lord, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as you are and bless you, ^(S)as he has promised you! ¹²^(T)How can I bear by myself the weight and burden of you and your strife? ¹³^(U)Choose for your tribes wise, understanding, and experienced men, and I will appoint them as your heads.’ ¹⁴And you answered me, ‘The thing that you have spoken is good for us to do.’ ¹⁵So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and experienced men, ^(V)and set them as heads over you, commanders of thousands, commanders of hundreds, commanders of fifties, commanders of tens, and officers, throughout your tribes. ¹⁶And I charged your judges at that time, ‘Hear the cases between your brothers, and ^(W)judge righteously between a man and his brother or the alien who is with him. ¹⁷^(X)You shall not be partial in judgment. You shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be intimidated by anyone, for ^(Y)the judgment is God's. And the case that is too hard for you, you shall ^(Z)bring to me, and I will hear it.’ ¹⁸And I commanded you at that time all the things that you should do.

Israel's Refusal to Enter the Land

¹⁹“Then we set out from Horeb and ^(AA)went through all that great and terrifying wilderness that you saw, on the way to the hill country of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded us. And ^(AB)we came to Kadesh-barnea. ²⁰And I said to you, ‘You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the Lord our God is giving us. ²¹See, the Lord your God has set the land before you. Go up, take possession, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has told you. ^(AC)Do not fear or be dismayed.’ ²²Then all of you came near me and said, ‘Let us send men before us, that they may explore the land for us and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up and the cities into which we shall come.’ ²³The thing seemed good to me, and ^(AD)I took twelve men from you, one man from each tribe. ²⁴And ^(AE)they turned and went up into the hill country, and came to the Valley of Eshcol and spied it out. ²⁵And they took in their hands some of the fruit of the land and brought it down to us, and brought us word again and said, ‘It is a good land that the Lord our God is giving us.’

²⁶“Yet you would not go up, but rebelled against the command of the Lord your God. ²⁷And ^(AF)you murmured in your tents and said, ‘Because the Lord ^(AG)hated us he has brought us out of the land of Egypt, ^(AH)to give us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. ²⁸Where are we going up? ^(AI)Our brothers have made our hearts melt, saying, ^(AJ)“The people are greater and taller than we. The cities are great and fortified up to heaven. And besides, we have seen ^(AK)the sons of the Anakim there.”’ ²⁹Then I said to you, ‘Do not be in dread or afraid of them. ³⁰The Lord your God who goes before you ^(AL)will himself fight for you, just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes, ³¹and in the wilderness, where you have seen how the Lord your God ^(AM)carried you, as a man carries his son, all the way that you went until you came to this place.’ ³²Yet in spite of this word ^(AN)you did not believe the Lord your God, ³³^(AO)who went before you in the way ^(AP)to seek you out a place to pitch your tents, in fire by night and in the cloud by day, to show you by what way you should go.

The Penalty for Israel's Rebellion

³⁴“And the Lord heard your words and was angered, and he swore, ³⁵^(AQ)‘Not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land that I swore to give to your fathers, ³⁶^(AR)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh. He shall see it, and to him and to his children I will give the land on which he has trodden, because he has wholly followed the Lord!’ ³⁷Even with me ^(AS)the Lord was angry on your account and said, ‘You also shall not go in there. ³⁸^(AT)Joshua the son of Nun, ^(AU)who stands before you, he shall enter. ^(AV)Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it. ³⁹And as for ^(AW)your little ones, who you said would become a prey, and your children, who today ^(AX)have no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in there. And to them I will give it, and they shall possess it. ⁴⁰But as for you, ^(AY)turn, and journey into the wilderness in the direction of the Red Sea.’

⁴¹“Then you answered me, ^(AZ)‘We have sinned against the Lord. We ourselves will go up and fight, just as the Lord our God commanded us.’ And every one of you fastened on his weapons of war and thought it easy to go up into the hill country. ⁴²And the Lord said to me, ^(BA)‘Say to them, Do not go up or fight, ^(BB)for I am not in your midst, lest you be defeated before your enemies.’ ⁴³So I spoke to you, and you would not listen; but you rebelled against the command of the Lord and ^(BC)presumptuously went up into the hill country. ⁴⁴^(BD)Then the Amorites who lived in that hill country came out against you and chased you ^(BE)as bees do and beat you down in Seir as far as ^(BF)Hormah. ⁴⁵And you returned and wept before the Lord, but the Lord did not listen to your voice or give ear to you. ⁴⁶So ^(BG)you remained at Kadesh many days, the days that you remained there.

The Command to Leave Horeb

1 These are the words Moses spoke to all Israel in the wilderness east of the Jordan^(A)—that is, in the Arabah^(B)—opposite Suph, between Paran^(C) and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Dizahab. ²(It takes eleven days to go from Horeb^(D) to Kadesh Barnea^(E) by the Mount Seir^(F) road.)^(G)

³In the fortieth year,^(H) on the first day of the eleventh month,^(I) Moses proclaimed^(J) to the Israelites all that the Lord had commanded him concerning them. ⁴This was after he had defeated Sihon^(K) king of the Amorites,^(L) who reigned in Heshbon,^(M) and at Edrei had defeated Og^(N) king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth.^(O)

⁵East of the Jordan in the territory of Moab,^(P) Moses began to expound this law, saying:

⁶The Lord our God said to us^(Q) at Horeb,^(R) “You have stayed long enough^(S) at this mountain. ⁷Break camp and advance into the hill country of the Amorites;^(T) go to all the neighboring peoples in the Arabah,^(U) in the mountains, in the western foothills, in the Negev^(V) and along the coast, to the land of the Canaanites^(W) and to Lebanon,^(X) as far as the great river, the Euphrates.^(Y) ⁸See, I have given you this land^(Z).^(AA) Go in and take possession of the land the Lord swore^(AB) he would give to your fathers—to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob—and to their descendants after them.”

The Appointment of Leaders

⁹At that time I said to you, “You are too heavy a burden^(AC) for me to carry alone.^(AD) ¹⁰The Lord your God has increased^(AE) your numbers^(AF) so that today you are as numerous^(AG) as the stars in the sky.^(AH) ¹¹May the Lord, the God of your ancestors, increase^(AI) you a thousand times and bless you as he has promised!^(AJ) ¹²But how can I bear your problems and your burdens and your disputes all by myself?^(AK) ¹³Choose some wise, understanding and respected men^(AL) from each of your tribes, and I will set them over you.”

¹⁴You answered me, “What you propose to do is good.”

¹⁵So I took^(AM) the leading men of your tribes,^(AN) wise and respected men,^(AO) and appointed them to have authority over you—as commanders^(AP) of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens and as tribal officials.^(AQ) ¹⁶And I charged your judges at that time, “Hear the disputes between your people and judge^(AR) fairly,^(AS) whether the case is between two Israelites or between an Israelite and a foreigner residing among you.^(AT) ¹⁷Do not show partiality^(AU) in judging; hear both small and great alike. Do not be afraid of anyone,^(AV) for judgment belongs to God. Bring me any case too hard for you, and I will hear it.”^(AW) ¹⁸And at that time I told you everything you were to do.^(AX)

Spies Sent Out

¹⁹Then, as the Lord our God commanded us, we set out from Horeb and went toward the hill country of the Amorites^(AY) through all that vast and dreadful wilderness^(AZ) that you have seen, and so we reached Kadesh Barnea.^(BA) ²⁰Then I said to you, “You have reached the hill country of the Amorites, which the Lord our God is giving us. ²¹See, the Lord your God has given you the land. Go up and take possession^(BB) of it as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, told you. Do not be afraid;^(BC) do not be discouraged.”^(BD)

²²Then all of you came to me and said, “Let us send men ahead to spy^(BE) out the land^(BF) for us and bring back a report about the route we are to take and the towns we will come to.”

²³The idea seemed good to me; so I selected^(BG) twelve of you, one man from each tribe. ²⁴They left and went up into the hill country, and came to the Valley of Eshkol^(BH) and explored it. ²⁵Taking with them some of the fruit of the land, they brought it down to us and reported,^(BI) “It is a good land^(BJ) that the Lord our God is giving us.”^(BK)

Rebellion Against the Lord

²⁶But you were unwilling to go up;^(BL) you rebelled^(BM) against the command of the Lord your God. ²⁷You grumbled^(BN) in your tents and said, “The Lord hates us; so he brought us out of Egypt to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us. ²⁸Where can we go? Our brothers have made our hearts melt in fear. They say, ‘The people are stronger and taller^(BO) than we are; the cities are large, with walls up to the sky. We even saw the Anakites^(BP) there.’”

²⁹Then I said to you, “Do not be terrified; do not be afraid^(BQ) of them.^(BR) ³⁰The Lord your God, who is going before you, will fight^(BS) for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, ³¹and in the wilderness. There you saw how the Lord your God carried^(BT) you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.”^(BU)

³²In spite of this,^(BV) you did not trust^(BW) in the Lord your God, ³³who went ahead of you on your journey, in fire by night and in a cloud by day,^(BX) to search^(BY) out places for you to camp and to show you the way you should go.

³⁴When the Lord heard^(BZ) what you said, he was angry^(CA) and solemnly swore:^(CB) ³⁵“No one from this evil generation shall see the good land^(CC) I swore to give your ancestors, ³⁶except Caleb^(CD) son of Jephunneh. He will see it, and I will give him and his descendants the land he set his feet on, because he followed the Lord wholeheartedly.^(CE)”

³⁷Because of you the Lord became angry^(CF) with me also and said, “You shall not enter^(CG) it, either. ³⁸But your assistant, Joshua^(CH) son of Nun, will enter it. Encourage^(CI) him, because he will lead^(CJ) Israel to inherit^(CK) it. ³⁹And the little ones that you said would be taken captive,^(CL) your children who do not yet know^(CM) good from bad—they will enter the land. I will give it to them and they will take possession of it. ⁴⁰But as for you, turn around and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea.^[a]^(CN)”

⁴¹Then you replied, “We have sinned against the Lord. We will go up and fight, as the Lord our God commanded us.” So every one of you put on his weapons, thinking it easy to go up into the hill country.

⁴²But the Lord said to me, “Tell them, ‘Do not go up and fight, because I will not be with you. You will be defeated by your enemies.’”^(CO)

⁴³So I told you, but you would not listen. You rebelled against the Lord’s command and in your arrogance you marched up into the hill country. ⁴⁴The Amorites who lived in those hills came out against you; they chased you like a swarm of bees^(CP) and beat you down from Seir^(CQ) all the way to Hormah.^(CR) ⁴⁵You came back and wept before the Lord,^(CS) but he paid no attention^(CT) to your weeping and turned a deaf ear^(CU) to you. ⁴⁶And so you stayed in Kadesh^(CV) many days—all the time you spent there.

Moses Forbidden to Enter the Land

²³“And I pleaded with the Lord at that time, saying, ²⁴‘O Lord God, you have only begun to show your servant ^(A)your greatness and your mighty hand. For ^(B)what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as yours? ²⁵Please let me go over and see ^(C)the good land beyond the Jordan, that good hill country and ^(D)Lebanon.’ ²⁶But ^(E)the Lord was angry with me because of you and would not listen to me. And the Lord said to me, ^(F)‘Enough from you; do not speak to me of this matter again. ²⁷^(G)Go up to the top of Pisgah and lift up your eyes westward and northward and southward and eastward, and look at it with your eyes, for you shall not go over this Jordan. ²⁸But ^(H)charge Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, for he shall go over at the head of this people, and he shall put them in possession of the land that you shall see.’ ²⁹So we remained in ^(I)the valley opposite Beth-peor.

Moses Commands Obedience

4 “And now, O Israel, listen to ^(J)the statutes and the rules^[a] that I am teaching you, and do them, ^(K)that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, is giving you. ²^(L)You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you. ³Your eyes have seen what the Lord did ^(M)at Baal-peor, for the Lord your God destroyed from among you all the men who followed the Baal of Peor. ⁴But you who held fast to the Lord your God are all alive today. ⁵See, I have taught you statutes and rules, as the Lord my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. ⁶^(N)Keep them and do them, for ^(O)that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ ⁷For ^(P)what great nation is there that has ^(Q)a god so near to it as the Lord our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? ⁸And what great nation is there, that has statutes and rules so ^(R)righteous as all this law that I set before you today?

⁹^(S)“Only take care, and ^(T)keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. ^(U)Make them known to your children and your children's children— ¹⁰how on ^(V)the day that you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, the Lord said to me, ^(W)‘Gather the people to me, that I may let them hear my words, ^(X)so that they may learn to fear ^(Y)me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children so.’ ¹¹And ^(Z)you came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, while ^(AA)the mountain burned with fire to the heart of heaven, wrapped in darkness, cloud, and gloom. ¹²Then ^(AB)the Lord spoke to you out of the midst of the fire. You heard the sound of words, ^(AC)but saw no form; ^(AD)there was only a voice. ¹³^(AE)And he declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, that is, ^(AF)the Ten Commandments,^[b] ^(AG)and he wrote them on two tablets of stone. ¹⁴And ^(AH)the Lord commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and rules, that you might do them in the land that you are going over to possess.

Idolatry Forbidden

¹⁵^(AI)“Therefore watch yourselves very carefully. Since ^(AJ)you saw no form on the day that the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire, ¹⁶beware ^(AK)lest you act corruptly ^(AL)by making a carved image for yourselves, in the form of any figure, ^(AM)the likeness of male or female, ¹⁷the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the air, ¹⁸the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth. ¹⁹And beware lest you raise your eyes to heaven, and when you see ^(AN)the sun and the moon and the stars, ^(AO)all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them, things that the Lord your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven. ²⁰But the Lord has taken you and ^(AP)brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, ^(AQ)to be a people of his own inheritance, as you are this day. ²¹Furthermore, ^(AR)the Lord was angry with me because of you, and he swore that I should not cross the Jordan, and that I should not enter the good land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance. ²²For I must die in this land; ^(AS)I must not go over the Jordan. But you shall go over and take possession of ^(AT)that good land. ²³^(AU)Take care, lest you forget the covenant of the Lord your God, which he made with you, and ^(AV)make a carved image, the form of anything that the Lord your God has forbidden you. ²⁴For ^(AW)the Lord your God is a consuming fire, ^(AX)a jealous God.

²⁵“When you father children and children's children, and have grown old in the land, ^(AY)if you act corruptly by making a carved image in the form of anything, and ^(AZ)by doing what is evil in the sight of the Lord your God, so as to provoke him to anger, ²⁶I ^(BA)call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that you will soon utterly perish from the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess. You will not live long in it, but will be utterly destroyed. ²⁷And the Lord ^(BB)will scatter you among the peoples, ^(BC)and you will be left few in number among the nations where the Lord will drive you. ²⁸And ^(BD)there you will serve gods of wood and stone, the work of human hands, ^(BE)that neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell. ²⁹^(BF)But from there you will seek the Lord your God and you will find him, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul. ³⁰When you are in tribulation, and all these things come upon you ^(BG)in the latter days, you will return to the Lord your God and obey his voice. ³¹For the Lord your God is ^(BH)a merciful God. ^(BI)He will not leave you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers that he swore to them.

The Lord Alone Is God

³²“For ^(BJ)ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and ask from one end of heaven to the other, whether such a great thing as this has ever happened or was ever heard of. ³³^(BK)Did any people ever hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and still live? ³⁴Or has any god ever attempted to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by trials, ^(BL)by signs, by wonders, and ^(BM)by war, ^(BN)by a mighty hand and ^(BO)an outstretched arm, and by great deeds of terror, all of which the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? ³⁵To you it was shown, ^(BP)that you might know that the Lord is God; ^(BQ)there is no other besides him. ³⁶^(BR)Out of heaven he let you hear his voice, that he might discipline you. And on earth he let you see his great fire, and ^(BS)you heard his words out of the midst of the fire. ³⁷And because ^(BT)he loved your fathers and chose their offspring after them^[c] and brought you out of Egypt ^(BU)with his own presence, by his great power, ³⁸^(BV)driving out before you nations greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as it is this day, ³⁹know therefore today, and lay it to your heart, that ^(BW)the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; ^(BX)there is no other. ⁴⁰^(BY)Therefore you shall keep his statutes and his commandments, which I command you today, ^(BZ)that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land that the Lord your God is giving you for all time.”

Cities of Refuge

⁴¹Then Moses ^(CA)set apart three cities in the east beyond the Jordan, ⁴²that ^(CB)the manslayer might flee there, anyone who kills his neighbor unintentionally, without being at enmity with him in time past; he may flee to one of these cities and save his life: ⁴³^(CC)Bezer in the wilderness on the ^(CD)tableland for the Reubenites, Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites, and Golan in Bashan for the Manassites.

Introduction to the Law

⁴⁴This is the law that Moses set before the people of Israel. ⁴⁵These are the testimonies, the statutes, and the rules, which Moses spoke to the people of Israel when they came out of Egypt, ⁴⁶beyond the Jordan ^(CE)in the valley opposite Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, ^(CF)whom Moses and the people of Israel defeated when they came out of Egypt. ⁴⁷And they took possession of his land and the land ^(CG)of Og, the king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who lived to the east beyond the Jordan; ⁴⁸^(CH)from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, as far as Mount ^(CI)Sirion^[d] (that is, ^(CJ)Hermon), ⁴⁹together with all the Arabah on the east side of the Jordan as far as ^(CK)the Sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.

The Ten Commandments

5 And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today, and you shall learn them and be careful to do them. ²^(CL)The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. ³^(CM)Not with our fathers did the Lord make this covenant, but with us, who are all of us here alive today. ⁴The Lord spoke with you ^(CN)face to face at the mountain, out of the midst of the fire, ⁵^(CO)while I stood between the Lord and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the Lord. For ^(CP)you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up into the mountain. He said:

⁶^(CQ)“‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

⁷“‘You shall have no other gods before^[e] me.

⁸“‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. ⁹You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, ¹⁰but showing steadfast love to ^(CR)thousands^[f] of those who love me and keep my commandments.

¹¹“‘You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

¹²“‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. ¹³Six days you shall labor and do all your work, ¹⁴but ^(CS)the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, ^(CT)that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. ¹⁵^(CU)You shall remember that you were a slave^[g] in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there ^(CV)with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

¹⁶“‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, ^(CW)that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

¹⁷^(CX)“‘You shall not murder.^[h]

¹⁸^(CY)“‘And you shall not commit adultery.

¹⁹“‘And you shall not steal.

²⁰“‘And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

²¹“‘And you shall not covet your neighbor's wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.’

²²“These words the Lord spoke to all your assembly ^(CZ)at the mountain out of the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and he added no more. And ^(DA)he wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. ²³And ^(DB)as soon as you heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes, and your elders. ²⁴And you said, ‘Behold, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and ^(DC)greatness, and ^(DD)we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man, and man ^(DE)still live. ²⁵Now therefore why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. ^(DF)If we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, we shall die. ²⁶^(DG)For who is there of all flesh, that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of fire as we have, and has still lived? ²⁷Go near and hear all that the Lord our God will say, and ^(DH)speak to us all that the Lord our God will speak to you, and we will hear and do it.’

²⁸“And the Lord heard your words, when you spoke to me. And the Lord said to me, ‘I have heard the words of this people, which they have spoken to you. ^(DI)They are right in all that they have spoken. ²⁹^(DJ)Oh that they had such a heart as this always, to fear me and to keep all my commandments, ^(DK)that it might go well with them and with their descendants^[i] forever! ³⁰Go and say to them, “Return to your tents.” ³¹But you, stand here by me, and ^(DL)I will tell you the whole commandment and the statutes and the rules that you shall teach them, that they may do them in the land that I am giving them to possess.’ ³²You shall be careful therefore to do as the Lord your God has commanded you. ^(DM)You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. ³³^(DN)You shall walk in all the way that the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live, and ^(DO)that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess.

The Greatest Commandment

6 “Now this is ^(DP)the commandment—the statutes and the rules^[j]—that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it, ²that ^(DQ)you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son's son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and ^(DR)that your days may be long. ³Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, ^(DS)as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.

⁴“Hear, O Israel: ^(DT)The Lord our God, the Lord is one.^[k] ⁵You ^(DU)shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. ⁶And ^(DV)these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. ⁷^(DW)You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. ⁸^(DX)You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. ⁹^(DY)You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

¹⁰“And when the Lord your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—with great and good cities ^(DZ)that you did not build, ¹¹and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant—and when you eat and are full, ¹²^(EA)then take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. ¹³It is ^(EB)the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and ^(EC)by his name you shall swear. ¹⁴You shall not ^(ED)go after other gods, ^(EE)the gods of the peoples who are around you— ¹⁵for ^(EF)the Lord your God in your midst ^(EG)is a jealous God—^(EH)lest the anger of the Lord your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the face of the earth.

¹⁶^(EI)“You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, ^(EJ)as you tested him at Massah. ¹⁷You shall ^(EK)diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and his testimonies and his statutes, which he has commanded you. ¹⁸^(EL)And you shall do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord, that it may go well with you, and that you may go in and take possession of the good land that the Lord swore to give to your fathers ¹⁹^(EM)by thrusting out all your enemies from before you, as the Lord has promised.

²⁰^(EN)“When your son asks you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the Lord our God has commanded you?’ ²¹then you shall say to your son, ^(EO)‘We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt. And the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. ²²And ^(EP)the Lord showed signs and wonders, great and grievous, against Egypt and against Pharaoh and all his household, before our eyes. ²³And he brought us out from there, that he might bring us in and give us the land that he swore to give to our fathers. ²⁴And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, ^(EQ)to fear the Lord our God, ^(ER)for our good always, that ^(ES)he might preserve us alive, as we are this day. ²⁵And ^(ET)it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to do all this commandment before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us.’

A Chosen People

7 “When the ^(EU)Lord your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take possession of it, and clears away many nations before you, ^(EV)the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations ^(EW)more numerous and mightier than you, ²^(EX)and when the Lord your God gives them over to you, and you defeat them, then you must ^(EY)devote them to complete destruction.^[l] ^(EZ)You shall make no covenant with them and show no mercy to them. ³^(FA)You shall not intermarry with them, giving your daughters to their sons or taking their daughters for your sons, ⁴for they would turn away your sons from following me, to serve other gods. ^(FB)Then the anger of the Lord would be kindled against you, and he would destroy you ^(FC)quickly. ⁵But thus shall you deal with them: ^(FD)you shall break down their altars and dash in pieces their ^(FE)pillars and chop down their ^(FF)Asherim and ^(FG)burn their carved images with fire.

⁶“For ^(FH)you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be ^(FI)a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. ⁷It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, ⁸but ^(FJ)it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping ^(FK)the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. ⁹Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, ^(FL)the faithful God ^(FM)who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations, ¹⁰and ^(FN)repays to their face those who hate him, by destroying them. ^(FO)He will not be slack with one who hates him. He will repay him to his face. ¹¹^(FP)You shall therefore be careful to do the commandment and the statutes and the rules that I command you today.

¹²^(FQ)“And because you listen to these rules and keep and do them, the Lord your God will keep with you ^(FR)the covenant and the steadfast love that he swore to your fathers. ¹³He will ^(FS)love you, bless you, and multiply you. ^(FT)He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your wine and your oil, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock, in the land that he swore to your fathers to give you. ¹⁴You shall be blessed above all peoples. ^(FU)There shall not be male or female barren among you or among your livestock. ¹⁵And the Lord will take away from you all sickness, and none of the evil ^(FV)diseases of Egypt, which you knew, will he inflict on you, but he will lay them on all who hate you. ¹⁶And ^(FW)you shall consume all the peoples that the Lord your God will give over to you. ^(FX)Your eye shall not pity them, neither shall you serve their gods, for that would be ^(FY)a snare to you.

¹⁷“If you say in your heart, ‘These nations are greater than I. How can I dispossess them?’ ¹⁸^(FZ)you shall not be afraid of them but you shall ^(GA)remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt, ¹⁹the great trials that your eyes saw, ^(GB)the signs, the wonders, the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm, by which the Lord your God brought you out. So will the Lord your God do to all the peoples of whom you are afraid. ²⁰Moreover, ^(GC)the Lord your God will send hornets among them, until those who are left and hide themselves from you are destroyed. ²¹You shall not be in dread of them, for the Lord your God is ^(GD)in your midst, ^(GE)a great and awesome God. ²²^(GF)The Lord your God will clear away these nations before you little by little. You may not make an end of them at once,^[m] lest the wild beasts grow too numerous for you. ²³^(GG)But the Lord your God will give them over to you and throw them into great confusion, until they are destroyed. ²⁴And ^(GH)he will give their kings into your hand, and you shall ^(GI)make their name perish from under heaven. ^(GJ)No one shall be able to stand against you until you have destroyed them. ²⁵The carved images of their gods ^(GK)you shall burn with fire. You ^(GL)shall not covet the silver or the gold that is on them or take it for yourselves, lest you be ^(GM)ensnared by it, for it is an abomination to the Lord your God. ²⁶And you shall not bring an abominable thing into your house and become devoted to destruction^[n] like it. You shall utterly detest and abhor it, ^(GN)for it is devoted to destruction.

For what god^(C) is there in heaven or on earth who can do the deeds and mighty works^(D) you do?^(E) ²⁵Let me go over and see the good land^(F) beyond the Jordan—that fine hill country and Lebanon.^(G)”

²⁶But because of you the Lord was angry^(H) with me and would not listen to me. “That is enough,” the Lord said. “Do not speak to me anymore about this matter. ²⁷Go up to the top of Pisgah^(I) and look west and north and south and east.^(J) Look at the land with your own eyes, since you are not going to cross^(K) this Jordan.^(L) ²⁸But commission^(M) Joshua, and encourage^(N) and strengthen him, for he will lead this people across^(O) and will cause them to inherit the land that you will see.” ²⁹So we stayed in the valley near Beth Peor.^(P)

Obedience Commanded

4 Now, Israel, hear the decrees^(Q) and laws I am about to teach^(R) you. Follow them so that you may live^(S) and may go in and take possession of the land the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. ²Do not add^(T) to what I command you and do not subtract^(U) from it, but keep^(V) the commands^(W) of the Lord your God that I give you.

³You saw with your own eyes what the Lord did at Baal Peor.^(X) The Lord your God destroyed from among you everyone who followed the Baal of Peor, ⁴but all of you who held fast to the Lord your God are still alive today.

⁵See, I have taught^(Y) you decrees and laws^(Z) as the Lord my God commanded^(AA) me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering^(AB) to take possession of it. ⁶Observe^(AC) them carefully, for this will show your wisdom^(AD) and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.”^(AE) ⁷What other nation is so great^(AF) as to have their gods near^(AG) them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him? ⁸And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws^(AH) as this body of laws I am setting before you today?

⁹Only be careful,^(AI) and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach^(AJ) them to your children^(AK) and to their children after them. ¹⁰Remember the day you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb,^(AL) when he said to me, “Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn^(AM) to revere^(AN) me as long as they live in the land^(AO) and may teach^(AP) them to their children.” ¹¹You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain^(AQ) while it blazed with fire^(AR) to the very heavens, with black clouds and deep darkness.^(AS) ¹²Then the Lord spoke^(AT) to you out of the fire. You heard the sound of words but saw no form;^(AU) there was only a voice.^(AV) ¹³He declared to you his covenant,^(AW) the Ten Commandments,^(AX) which he commanded you to follow and then wrote them on two stone tablets. ¹⁴And the Lord directed me at that time to teach you the decrees and laws^(AY) you are to follow in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.

Idolatry Forbidden

¹⁵You saw no form^(AZ) of any kind the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb^(BA) out of the fire. Therefore watch yourselves very carefully,^(BB) ¹⁶so that you do not become corrupt^(BC) and make for yourselves an idol,^(BD) an image of any shape, whether formed like a man or a woman, ¹⁷or like any animal on earth or any bird that flies in the air,^(BE) ¹⁸or like any creature that moves along the ground or any fish in the waters below. ¹⁹And when you look up to the sky and see the sun,^(BF) the moon and the stars^(BG)—all the heavenly array^(BH)—do not be enticed^(BI) into bowing down to them and worshiping^(BJ) things the Lord your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven. ²⁰But as for you, the Lord took you and brought you out of the iron-smelting furnace,^(BK) out of Egypt,^(BL) to be the people of his inheritance,^(BM) as you now are.

²¹The Lord was angry with me^(BN) because of you, and he solemnly swore that I would not cross the Jordan and enter the good land the Lord your God is giving you as your inheritance. ²²I will die in this land;^(BO) I will not cross the Jordan; but you are about to cross over and take possession of that good land.^(BP) ²³Be careful not to forget the covenant^(BQ) of the Lord your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol^(BR) in the form of anything the Lord your God has forbidden. ²⁴For the Lord your God is a consuming fire,^(BS) a jealous God.^(BT)

²⁵After you have had children and grandchildren and have lived in the land a long time—if you then become corrupt^(BU) and make any kind of idol,^(BV) doing evil^(BW) in the eyes of the Lord your God and arousing his anger, ²⁶I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses^(BX) against you^(BY) this day that you will quickly perish^(BZ) from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live there long but will certainly be destroyed. ²⁷The Lord will scatter^(CA) you among the peoples, and only a few of you will survive^(CB) among the nations to which the Lord will drive you. ²⁸There you will worship man-made gods^(CC) of wood and stone,^(CD) which cannot see or hear or eat or smell.^(CE) ²⁹But if from there you seek^(CF) the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart^(CG) and with all your soul.^(CH) ³⁰When you are in distress^(CI) and all these things have happened to you, then in later days^(CJ) you will return^(CK) to the Lord your God and obey him. ³¹For the Lord your God is a merciful^(CL) God; he will not abandon^(CM) or destroy^(CN) you or forget^(CO) the covenant with your ancestors, which he confirmed to them by oath.

The Lord Is God

³²Ask^(CP) now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created human beings on the earth;^(CQ) ask from one end of the heavens to the other.^(CR) Has anything so great^(CS) as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of? ³³Has any other people heard the voice of God^[a] speaking out of fire, as you have, and lived?^(CT) ³⁴Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation,^(CU) by testings,^(CV) by signs^(CW) and wonders,^(CX) by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm,^(CY) or by great and awesome deeds,^(CZ) like all the things the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes?

³⁵You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God; besides him there is no other.^(DA) ³⁶From heaven he made you hear his voice^(DB) to discipline^(DC) you. On earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from out of the fire. ³⁷Because he loved^(DD) your ancestors and chose their descendants after them, he brought you out of Egypt by his Presence and his great strength,^(DE) ³⁸to drive out before you nations greater and stronger than you and to bring you into their land to give it to you for your inheritance,^(DF) as it is today.

³⁹Acknowledge^(DG) and take to heart this day that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other.^(DH) ⁴⁰Keep^(DI) his decrees and commands,^(DJ) which I am giving you today, so that it may go well^(DK) with you and your children after you and that you may live long^(DL) in the land the Lord your God gives you for all time.

Cities of Refuge^(DM)

⁴¹Then Moses set aside three cities east of the Jordan, ⁴²to which anyone who had killed a person could flee if they had unintentionally^(DN) killed a neighbor without malice aforethought. They could flee into one of these cities and save their life. ⁴³The cities were these: Bezer in the wilderness plateau, for the Reubenites; Ramoth^(DO) in Gilead, for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites.

Introduction to the Law

⁴⁴This is the law Moses set before the Israelites. ⁴⁵These are the stipulations, decrees and laws Moses gave them when they came out of Egypt ⁴⁶and were in the valley near Beth Peor east of the Jordan, in the land of Sihon^(DP) king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon and was defeated by Moses and the Israelites as they came out of Egypt. ⁴⁷They took possession of his land and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan. ⁴⁸This land extended from Aroer^(DQ) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge to Mount Sirion^[b]^(DR) (that is, Hermon^(DS)), ⁴⁹and included all the Arabah east of the Jordan, as far as the Dead Sea,^[c] below the slopes of Pisgah.

The Ten Commandments^(DT)

5 Moses summoned all Israel and said:

Hear, Israel, the decrees and laws^(DU) I declare in your hearing today. Learn them and be sure to follow them. ²The Lord our God made a covenant^(DV) with us at Horeb.^(DW) ³It was not with our ancestors^[d] that the Lord made this covenant, but with us,^(DX) with all of us who are alive here today.^(DY) ⁴The Lord spoke^(DZ) to you face to face^(EA) out of the fire^(EB) on the mountain. ⁵(At that time I stood between^(EC) the Lord and you to declare to you the word of the Lord, because you were afraid^(ED) of the fire and did not go up the mountain.) And he said:

⁶“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt,^(EE) out of the land of slavery.^(EF)

⁷“You shall have no other gods before^[e] me.

⁸“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.^(EG) ⁹You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents^(EH) to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,^(EI) ¹⁰but showing love to a thousand^(EJ) generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.^(EK)

¹¹“You shall not misuse the name^(EL) of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.^(EM)

¹²“Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy,^(EN) as the Lord your God has commanded you. ¹³Six days you shall labor and do all your work, ¹⁴but the seventh day^(EO) is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant,^(EP) nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest, as you do.^(EQ) ¹⁵Remember that you were slaves^(ER) in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand^(ES) and an outstretched arm.^(ET) Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.

¹⁶“Honor your father^(EU) and your mother,^(EV) as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long^(EW) and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

¹⁷“You shall not murder.^(EX)

¹⁸“You shall not commit adultery.^(EY)

¹⁹“You shall not steal.^(EZ)

²⁰“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.^(FA)

²¹“You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. You shall not set your desire on your neighbor’s house or land, his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”^(FB)

²²These are the commandments the Lord proclaimed in a loud voice to your whole assembly there on the mountain from out of the fire, the cloud and the deep darkness;^(FC) and he added nothing more. Then he wrote them on two stone tablets^(FD) and gave them to me.

²³When you heard the voice out of the darkness, while the mountain was ablaze with fire, all the leaders of your tribes and your elders^(FE) came to me. ²⁴And you said, “The Lord our God has shown us^(FF) his glory and his majesty,^(FG) and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have seen that a person can live even if God speaks with them.^(FH) ²⁵But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us, and we will die if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer.^(FI) ²⁶For what mortal has ever heard the voice of the living God speaking out of fire, as we have, and survived?^(FJ) ²⁷Go near and listen to all that the Lord our God says.^(FK) Then tell us whatever the Lord our God tells you. We will listen and obey.”^(FL)

²⁸The Lord heard you when you spoke to me, and the Lord said to me, “I have heard what this people said to you. Everything they said was good.^(FM) ²⁹Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me^(FN) and keep all my commands^(FO) always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever!^(FP)

³⁰“Go, tell them to return to their tents. ³¹But you stay here^(FQ) with me so that I may give you all the commands, decrees and laws you are to teach them to follow in the land I am giving them to possess.”

³²So be careful to do what the Lord your God has commanded you;^(FR) do not turn aside to the right or to the left.^(FS) ³³Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you,^(FT) so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days^(FU) in the land that you will possess.

Love the Lord Your God

6 These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, ²so that you, your children and their children after them may fear^(FV) the Lord your God as long as you live^(FW) by keeping all his decrees and commands^(FX) that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.^(FY) ³Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey^(FZ) so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly^(GA) in a land flowing with milk and honey,^(GB) just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised^(GC) you.

⁴Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.^[f]^(GD) ⁵Love^(GE) the Lord your God with all your heart^(GF) and with all your soul and with all your strength.^(GG) ⁶These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.^(GH) ⁷Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.^(GI) ⁸Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.^(GJ) ⁹Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.^(GK)

¹⁰When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build,^(GL) ¹¹houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig,^(GM) and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied,^(GN) ¹²be careful that you do not forget^(GO) the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

¹³Fear the Lord^(GP) your God, serve him only^(GQ) and take your oaths^(GR) in his name.^(GS) ¹⁴Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you; ¹⁵for the Lord your God^(GT), who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the land. ¹⁶Do not put the Lord your God to the test^(GU) as you did at Massah. ¹⁷Be sure to keep^(GV) the commands of the Lord your God and the stipulations and decrees he has given you.^(GW) ¹⁸Do what is right and good in the Lord’s sight,^(GX) so that it may go well^(GY) with you and you may go in and take over the good land the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors, ¹⁹thrusting out all your enemies^(GZ) before you, as the Lord said.

²⁰In the future, when your son asks you,^(HA) “What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the Lord our God has commanded you?” ²¹tell him: “We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.^(HB) ²²Before our eyes the Lord sent signs and wonders—great and terrible—on Egypt and Pharaoh and his whole household. ²³But he brought us out from there to bring us in and give us the land he promised on oath to our ancestors. ²⁴The Lord commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the Lord our God,^(HC) so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today.^(HD) ²⁵And if we are careful to obey all this law^(HE) before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness.^(HF)”

Driving Out the Nations

7 When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess^(HG) and drives out before you many nations^(HH)—the Hittites,^(HI) Girgashites,^(HJ) Amorites,^(HK) Canaanites, Perizzites,^(HL) Hivites^(HM) and Jebusites,^(HN) seven nations larger and stronger than you— ²and when the Lord your God has delivered^(HO) them over to you and you have defeated them, then you must destroy^(HP) them totally.^[g]^(HQ) Make no treaty^(HR) with them, and show them no mercy.^(HS) ³Do not intermarry with them.^(HT) Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, ⁴for they will turn your children away from following me to serve other gods,^(HU) and the Lord’s anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy^(HV) you. ⁵This is what you are to do to them: Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones, cut down their Asherah poles^[h]^(HW) and burn their idols in the fire.^(HX) ⁶For you are a people holy^(HY) to the Lord your God.^(HZ) The Lord your God has chosen^(IA) you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.^(IB)

⁷The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous^(IC) than other peoples, for you were the fewest^(ID) of all peoples.^(IE) ⁸But it was because the Lord loved^(IF) you and kept the oath he swore^(IG) to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand^(IH) and redeemed^(II) you from the land of slavery,^(IJ) from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. ⁹Know therefore that the Lord your God is God;^(IK) he is the faithful God,^(IL) keeping his covenant of love^(IM) to a thousand generations^(IN) of those who love him and keep his commandments.^(IO) ¹⁰But

those who hate him he will repay to their face by destruction;
he will not be slow to repay to their face those who hate him.^(IP)

¹¹Therefore, take care to follow the commands, decrees and laws I give you today.

¹²If you pay attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then the Lord your God will keep his covenant of love with you, as he swore to your ancestors.^(IQ) ¹³He will love you and bless you^(IR) and increase your numbers.^(IS) He will bless the fruit of your womb,^(IT) the crops of your land—your grain, new wine^(IU) and olive oil^(IV)—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.^(IW) ¹⁴You will be blessed more than any other people; none of your men or women will be childless, nor will any of your livestock be without young.^(IX) ¹⁵The Lord will keep you free from every disease.^(IY) He will not inflict on you the horrible diseases you knew in Egypt,^(IZ) but he will inflict them on all who hate you.^(JA) ¹⁶You must destroy all the peoples the Lord your God gives over to you.^(JB) Do not look on them with pity^(JC) and do not serve their gods,^(JD) for that will be a snare^(JE) to you.

¹⁷You may say to yourselves, “These nations are stronger than we are. How can we drive them out?^(JF)” ¹⁸But do not be afraid^(JG) of them; remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt.^(JH) ¹⁹You saw with your own eyes the great trials, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand^(JI) and outstretched arm, with which the Lord your God brought you out. The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear.^(JJ) ²⁰Moreover, the Lord your God will send the hornet^(JK) among them until even the survivors who hide from you have perished. ²¹Do not be terrified by them, for the Lord your God, who is among you,^(JL) is a great and awesome God.^(JM) ²²The Lord your God will drive out those nations before you, little by little.^(JN) You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you. ²³But the Lord your God will deliver them over to you, throwing them into great confusion until they are destroyed.^(JO) ²⁴He will give their kings^(JP) into your hand,^(JQ) and you will wipe out their names from under heaven. No one will be able to stand up against you;^(JR) you will destroy them.^(JS) ²⁵The images of their gods you are to burn^(JT) in the fire. Do not covet^(JU) the silver and gold on them, and do not take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared^(JV) by it, for it is detestable^(JW) to the Lord your God. ²⁶Do not bring a detestable thing into your house or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction.^(JX) Regard it as vile and utterly detest it, for it is set apart for destruction.

The Reading of the Law

Joshua Commissioned to Lead Israel

¹⁶And the Lord said to Moses, ^(AD)“Behold, you are about to lie down with your fathers. Public Reading of the Law

⁹So Moses wrote^(S) down this law and gave it to the Levitical priests, who carried^(T) the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. ¹⁰Then Moses commanded them: “At the end of every seven years, in the year for canceling debts,^(U) during the Festival of Tabernacles,^(V) ¹¹when all Israel comes to appear^(W) before the Lord your God at the place he will choose,^(X) you shall read this law^(Y) before them in their hearing. ¹²Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns—so they can listen and learn^(Z) to fear^(AA) the Lord your God and follow carefully all the words of this law. ¹³Their children,^(AB) who do not know this law, must hear it and learn to fear the Lord your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

Israel’s Rebellion Predicted

¹⁴The Lord said to Moses, “Now the day of your death^(AC) is near. Call Joshua^(AD) and present yourselves at the tent of meeting, where I will commission him.^(AE)” So Moses and Joshua came and presented themselves at the tent of meeting.^(AF)

¹⁵Then the Lord appeared at the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the cloud stood over the entrance to the tent.^(AG) ¹⁶And the Lord said to Moses: “You are going to rest with your ancestors,^(AH) and these people will soon prostitute^(AI) themselves to the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake^(AJ) me and break the covenant I made with them. ¹⁷And in that day I will become angry^(AK) with them and forsake^(AL) them; I will hide^(AM) my face^(AN) from them, and they will be destroyed. Many disasters^(AO) and calamities will come on them, and in that day they will ask, ‘Have not these disasters come on us because our God is not with us?’^(AP) ¹⁸And I will certainly hide my face in that day because of all their wickedness in turning to other gods.

¹⁶They made him jealous^(AW) with their foreign gods
    and angered^(AX) him with their detestable idols.
¹⁷They sacrificed^(AY) to false gods,^(AZ) which are not God—
    gods they had not known,^(BA)
    gods that recently appeared,^(BB)
    gods your ancestors did not fear.
¹⁸You deserted the Rock, who fathered you;
    you forgot^(BC) the God who gave you birth.

¹⁹The Lord saw this and rejected them^(BD)
    because he was angered by his sons and daughters.^(BE)
²⁰“I will hide my face^(BF) from them,” he said,
    “and see what their end will be;
for they are a perverse generation,^(BG)
    children who are unfaithful.^(BH)
²¹They made me jealous^(BI) by what is no god
    and angered me with their worthless idols.^(BJ)
I will make them envious by those who are not a people;
    I will make them angry by a nation that has no understanding.^(BK)
²²For a fire will be kindled by my wrath,^(BL)
    one that burns down to the realm of the dead below.^(BM)
It will devour^(BN) the earth and its harvests^(BO)
    and set afire the foundations of the mountains.^(BP)

²³“I will heap calamities^(BQ) on them
    and spend my arrows^(BR) against them.
²⁴I will send wasting famine^(BS) against them,
    consuming pestilence^(BT) and deadly plague;^(BU)
I will send against them the fangs of wild beasts,^(BV)
    the venom of vipers^(BW) that glide in the dust.^(BX)
²⁵In the street the sword will make them childless;
    in their homes terror^(BY) will reign.^(BZ)
The young men and young women will perish,
    the infants and those with gray hair.^(CA)
²⁶I said I would scatter^(CB) them
    and erase their name from human memory,^(CC)
²⁷but I dreaded the taunt of the enemy,
    lest the adversary misunderstand^(CD)
and say, ‘Our hand has triumphed;
    the Lord has not done all this.’”^(CE)

²⁸They are a nation without sense,
there is no discernment^(CF) in them.
