7 Når Herren din Gud har ført dig inn i det land du nu drar inn i og skal ta i eie, og han driver ut mange folk for dig, hetittene og girgasittene og amorittene og kana'anittene og ferisittene og hevittene og jebusittene, syv folk, som er større og sterkere enn du,
2 og når Herren din Gud gir dem i din vold, så du vinner over dem, da skal du slå dem med bann; du skal ikke gjøre pakt med dem og ikke vise dem nåde.
3 Du skal ikke inngå svogerskap med dem; du skal ikke gi dine døtre til hans sønner og ikke ta hans døtre til hustruer for dine sønner;
4 for de vil få dine sønner til å vike av fra mig, så de dyrker andre guder, og da vil Herrens vrede optendes mot eder, og han vil hastig gjøre ende på dig.
5 Men således skal I gjøre med dem: Deres altere skal I bryte ned, og deres billedstøtter skal I slå sønder, og deres Astarte-billeder skal I hugge i stykker, og deres utskårne billeder skal I brenne op med ild.
6 For et hellig folk er du for Herren din Gud; dig har Herren din Gud utvalgt av alle de folk som er på jorden, til å være hans eiendomsfolk.
7 Ikke fordi I var større enn alle andre folk, fant Herren behag i eder, så han utvalgte eder, for I er det minste blandt alle folk;
8 men fordi Herren elsket eder, og fordi han vilde holde den ed han hadde svoret eders fedre, derfor førte Herren eder ut med sterk hånd og fridde dig ut av trælehuset, fra Faraos, egypterkongens hånd.
9 Så vit da at Herren din Gud han er Gud, den trofaste Gud, som holder sin pakt og bevarer sin miskunnhet mot tusen ledd, mot dem som elsker ham og holder hans bud,
10 men som gjengjelder dem som hater ham, like op i deres øine, så han lar dem omkomme. Han er ikke sen når det gjelder den som hater ham; like op i hans øine gjengjelder han ham.
11 Så ta da vare på det bud og de lover og de forskrifter som jeg idag byder dig å holde.
12 Når I nu hører disse bud og tar vare på dem og holder dem, da skal Herren din Gud holde fast ved den pakt og den miskunnhet han har tilsvoret dine fedre.
13 Han skal elske dig og velsigne dig og øke din ætt, og han skal velsigne ditt livs frukt og ditt lands frukt, ditt korn og din most og din olje, det som faller av ditt storfe, og det som fødes av ditt småfe, i det land han har tilsvoret dine fedre å ville gi dig.
14 Velsignet skal du være fremfor alle andre folk; der skal ingen ufruktbar være blandt dine menn eller dine kvinner, og heller ikke blandt ditt fe.
15 Herren skal holde all sykdom borte fra dig, og ingen av Egyptens onde syker, som du kjenner, skal han legge på dig, men han skal legge dem på alle dem som hater dig.
16 Alle de folk som Herren din Gud gir i din hånd, skal du fortære[a]; du skal ikke spare dem. Og du skal ikke dyrke deres guder; for det vil bli en snare for dig.
17 Men om du tenker som så: Disse folk er større enn jeg, hvorledes skal jeg makte å drive dem ut? -
18 da skal du ikke være redd for dem; du skal komme i hu hvad Herren din Gud gjorde med Farao og med alle egypterne,
19 de store plager som du så for dine øine, og de tegn og under og den sterke hånd og den utrakte arm hvormed Herren din Gud førte dig ut; det samme skal Herren din Gud gjøre med alle de folk du reddes for.
20 Endog hvepser skal Herren din Gud sende mot dem, til alle de er omkommet som er blitt tilbake og har skjult sig for dig.
21 Du skal ikke forferdes for dem; for Herren din Gud er i din midte, en stor og forferdelig Gud.
22 Herren din Gud vil litt efter litt drive disse folk ut for dig; du skal ikke makte å gjøre ende på dem i hast; for da kom villdyrene til å bli for mange for dig.
23 Herren din Gud skal gi dem i din vold og slå dem med stor forvirring, til de er ødelagt.
24 Og han skal gi deres konger i din hånd, og du skal tilintetgjøre deres navn under himmelen; der skal ingen kunne stå sig mot dig, til du har utryddet dem.
25 Deres guders utskårne billeder skal I brenne op med ild; du skal ikke attrå sølvet eller gullet som er på dem, eller ta det til dig, forat det ikke skal bli til en snare for dig; for det er en vederstyggelighet for Herren din Gud,
26 og du skal ikke la nogen vederstyggelighet komme inn i ditt hus, så du blir slått med bann likesom det; du skal avsky det og akte det for en vederstyggelighet, for det er slått med bann.
8 Alle de bud jeg gir dig idag, skal I akte vel på å holde, forat I må leve og bli tallrike og komme inn i det land Herren har tilsvoret eders fedre, og ta det i eie.
2 Og du skal komme i hu hele den vei Herren din Gud har ført dig på i disse firti år i ørkenen for å ydmyke dig og prøve dig og for å kjenne hvad som var i ditt hjerte, om du vilde ta vare på hans bud eller ikke.
3 Og han ydmyket dig og lot dig hungre, og han gav dig manna å ete, en mat som hverken du eller dine fedre kjente, fordi han vilde la dig vite at mennesket ikke lever av brød alene, men at mennesket lever av hvert ord som går ut av Herrens munn.
4 Dine klær blev ikke utslitt på dig, og din fot blev ikke hoven i disse firti år.
5 Så forstå da i ditt hjerte at likesom en mann optukter sin sønn, således optuktet Herren din Gud dig,
6 og hold Herrens, din Guds bud, så du vandrer på hans veier og frykter ham!
7 Når Herren din Gud fører dig inn i et godt land, et land med rinnende bekker, med kilder og dype vann, som veller frem i dalene og på fjellene,
8 et land med hvete og bygg og vintrær og fikentrær og granatepletrær, et land med oljetrær og honning,
9 et land hvor du ikke skal ete ditt brød i armod, hvor du intet skal mangle, et land hvor stenene er jern, og hvor du kan hugge ut kobber av fjellene,
10 og når du så eter og blir mett og lover Herren din Gud for det gode land han har gitt dig,
11 da vokt dig for å glemme Herren din Gud, så du ikke tar vare på hans bud og hans forskrifter og hans lover, som jeg pålegger dig idag,
12 og vokt dig at du ikke, når du eter og blir mett og bygger gode hus og bor i dem,
13 og ditt storfe og ditt småfe økes, og ditt sølv og ditt gull økes, og all din eiendom økes,
14 at du da ikke ophøier dig i ditt hjerte, så du glemmer Herren din Gud, som førte dig ut av Egyptens land, av trælehuset,
15 han som ledet dig i den store og forferdelige ørken blandt giftige slanger og skorpioner og på tørre ødemarker, hvor det ikke fantes vann, han som lot vann strømme ut for dig av den hårde klippe,
16 han som i ørkenen gav dig manna å ete, en mat som dine fedre ikke kjente, for å ydmyke dig og prøve dig og så til sist gjøre vel imot dig.
17 Si da ikke ved dig selv: Det er min kraft og min sterke hånd som har vunnet mig denne rikdom,
18 men kom Herren din Gud i hu! For det er han som gir dig kraft til å vinne dig rikdom, fordi han vil holde sin pakt som han tilsvor dine fedre, således som det kan sees på denne dag.
19 Men dersom du glemmer Herren din Gud og følger andre guder og dyrker dem og tilbeder dem, da vidner jeg mot eder idag at I visselig skal omkomme.
20 Likesom de hedninger Herren lar omkomme for eder, således skal også I omkomme, fordi I ikke hører på Herrens, eders Guds røst.

Driving Out the Nations
7 When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess(A) and drives out before you many nations(B)—the Hittites,(C) Girgashites,(D) Amorites,(E) Canaanites, Perizzites,(F) Hivites(G) and Jebusites,(H) seven nations larger and stronger than you— 2 and when the Lord your God has delivered(I) them over to you and you have defeated them, then you must destroy(J) them totally.[a](K) Make no treaty(L) with them, and show them no mercy.(M) 3 Do not intermarry with them.(N) Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, 4 for they will turn your children away from following me to serve other gods,(O) and the Lord’s anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy(P) you. 5 This is what you are to do to them: Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones, cut down their Asherah poles[b](Q) and burn their idols in the fire.(R) 6 For you are a people holy(S) to the Lord your God.(T) The Lord your God has chosen(U) you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.(V)
7 The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous(W) than other peoples, for you were the fewest(X) of all peoples.(Y) 8 But it was because the Lord loved(Z) you and kept the oath he swore(AA) to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand(AB) and redeemed(AC) you from the land of slavery,(AD) from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9 Know therefore that the Lord your God is God;(AE) he is the faithful God,(AF) keeping his covenant of love(AG) to a thousand generations(AH) of those who love him and keep his commandments.(AI) 10 But
those who hate him he will repay to their face by destruction;
he will not be slow to repay to their face those who hate him.(AJ)
11 Therefore, take care to follow the commands, decrees and laws I give you today.
12 If you pay attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then the Lord your God will keep his covenant of love with you, as he swore to your ancestors.(AK) 13 He will love you and bless you(AL) and increase your numbers.(AM) He will bless the fruit of your womb,(AN) the crops of your land—your grain, new wine(AO) and olive oil(AP)—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.(AQ) 14 You will be blessed more than any other people; none of your men or women will be childless, nor will any of your livestock be without young.(AR) 15 The Lord will keep you free from every disease.(AS) He will not inflict on you the horrible diseases you knew in Egypt,(AT) but he will inflict them on all who hate you.(AU) 16 You must destroy all the peoples the Lord your God gives over to you.(AV) Do not look on them with pity(AW) and do not serve their gods,(AX) for that will be a snare(AY) to you.
17 You may say to yourselves, “These nations are stronger than we are. How can we drive them out?(AZ)” 18 But do not be afraid(BA) of them; remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt.(BB) 19 You saw with your own eyes the great trials, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand(BC) and outstretched arm, with which the Lord your God brought you out. The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear.(BD) 20 Moreover, the Lord your God will send the hornet(BE) among them until even the survivors who hide from you have perished. 21 Do not be terrified by them, for the Lord your God, who is among you,(BF) is a great and awesome God.(BG) 22 The Lord your God will drive out those nations before you, little by little.(BH) You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you. 23 But the Lord your God will deliver them over to you, throwing them into great confusion until they are destroyed.(BI) 24 He will give their kings(BJ) into your hand,(BK) and you will wipe out their names from under heaven. No one will be able to stand up against you;(BL) you will destroy them.(BM) 25 The images of their gods you are to burn(BN) in the fire. Do not covet(BO) the silver and gold on them, and do not take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared(BP) by it, for it is detestable(BQ) to the Lord your God. 26 Do not bring a detestable thing into your house or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction.(BR) Regard it as vile and utterly detest it, for it is set apart for destruction.
Do Not Forget the Lord
8 Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live(BS) and increase and may enter and possess the land the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors.(BT) 2 Remember how the Lord your God led(BU) you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test(BV) you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. 3 He humbled(BW) you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna,(BX) which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach(BY) you that man does not live on bread(BZ) alone but on every word that comes from the mouth(CA) of the Lord.(CB) 4 Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.(CC) 5 Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.(CD)
6 Observe the commands of the Lord your God, walking in obedience to him(CE) and revering him.(CF) 7 For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land(CG)—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills;(CH) 8 a land with wheat and barley,(CI) vines(CJ) and fig trees,(CK) pomegranates, olive oil and honey;(CL) 9 a land where bread(CM) will not be scarce and you will lack nothing;(CN) a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.(CO)
10 When you have eaten and are satisfied,(CP) praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. 11 Be careful that you do not forget(CQ) the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. 12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down,(CR) 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget(CS) the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 15 He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness,(CT) that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes(CU) and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.(CV) 16 He gave you manna(CW) to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known,(CX) to humble and test(CY) you so that in the end it might go well with you. 17 You may say to yourself,(CZ) “My power and the strength of my hands(DA) have produced this wealth for me.” 18 But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth,(DB) and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.
19 If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods(DC) and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.(DD) 20 Like the nations(DE) the Lord destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the Lord your God.(DF)
