^17 (A) And the king must not have a lot of wives—they might tempt him to be unfaithful to the Lord.^[a] Finally, the king must not try to get huge amounts of silver and gold.

¹⁶ Your men will even marry their women and be influenced to worship their gods.

³ and don't let your sons and daughters marry any of them.

⁴ If you do, those people will lead your descendants to worship other gods and to turn their backs on the Lord. That will make him very angry, and he will quickly destroy Israel.
