Deuteronomy 25:2-4
Common English Bible
2 If the guilty party is to be beaten, the presiding judge will have that person lie down and be punished in his presence—the number of blows in measure with the guilt determined. 3 Give no more than forty blows. If more than that is given, your fellow Israelite would be completely disgraced in your eyes.

Deuteronomy 25:2-4
New International Version
2 If the guilty person deserves to be beaten,(A) the judge shall make them lie down and have them flogged in his presence with the number of lashes the crime deserves, 3 but the judge must not impose more than forty lashes.(B) If the guilty party is flogged more than that, your fellow Israelite will be degraded in your eyes.(C)
4 Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.(D)
