The Promise of God’s Presence

12 Then Moses said to the Lord, “See, (A)You say to me, ‘Bring up this people.’ But You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, (B)‘I know you by name, and you have also found grace in My sight.’ 13 Now therefore, I pray, (C)if I have found grace in Your sight, (D)show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is (E)Your people.”

14 And He said, (F)“My Presence will go with you, and I will give you (G)rest.”

15 Then he said to Him, (H)“If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here. 16 For how then will it be known that Your people and I have found grace in Your sight, (I)except You go with us? So we (J)shall be separate, Your people and I, from all the people who are upon the face of the earth.”

17 So the Lord said to Moses, (K)“I will also do this thing that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name.”

18 And he said, “Please, show me (L)Your glory.”

19 Then He said, “I will make all My (M)goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. (N)I will be gracious to whom I will be (O)gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” 20 But He said, “You cannot see My face; for (P)no man shall see Me, and live.” 21 And the Lord said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. 22 So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you (Q)in the cleft of the rock, and will (R)cover you with My hand while I pass by. 23 Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall (S)not be seen.”

Moses Makes New Tablets(T)

34 And the Lord said to Moses, (U)“Cut two tablets of stone like the first ones, and (V)I will write on these tablets the words that were on the first tablets which you broke. So be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself to Me there (W)on the top of the mountain. And no man shall (X)come up with you, and let no man be seen throughout all the mountain; let neither flocks nor herds feed before that mountain.”

So he cut two tablets of stone like the first ones. Then Moses rose early in the morning and went up Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him; and he took in his hand the two tablets of stone.

Now the Lord descended in the (Y)cloud and stood with him there, and (Z)proclaimed the name of the Lord. And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord (AA)God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in (AB)goodness and (AC)truth, (AD)keeping mercy for thousands, (AE)forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, (AF)by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”

So Moses made haste and (AG)bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped. Then he said, “If now I have found grace in Your sight, O Lord, (AH)let my Lord, I pray, go among us, even though we are a (AI)stiff-necked[a] people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us as (AJ)Your inheritance.”

The Covenant Renewed(AK)

10 And He said: “Behold, (AL)I make a covenant. Before all your people I will (AM)do [b]marvels such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation; and all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the Lord. For it is (AN)an awesome thing that I will do with you. 11 (AO)Observe what I command you this day. Behold, (AP)I am driving out from before you the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. 12 (AQ)Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, lest it be a snare in your midst. 13 But you shall (AR)destroy their altars, break their sacred pillars, and (AS)cut down their wooden images 14 (for you shall worship (AT)no other god, for the Lord, whose (AU)name is Jealous, is a (AV)jealous God), 15 lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they (AW)play the harlot with their gods and make sacrifice to their gods, and one of them (AX)invites you and you (AY)eat of his sacrifice, 16 and you take of (AZ)his daughters for your sons, and his daughters (BA)play the harlot with their gods and make your sons play the harlot with their gods.

17 (BB)“You shall make no molded gods for yourselves.

18 “The Feast of (BC)Unleavened Bread you shall keep. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, in the appointed time of the month of Abib; for in the (BD)month of Abib you came out from Egypt.

19 (BE)“All [c]that open the womb are Mine, and every male firstborn among your livestock, whether ox or sheep. 20 But (BF)the firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb. And if you will not redeem him, then you shall break his neck. All the firstborn of your sons you shall redeem.

“And none shall appear before Me (BG)empty-handed.

21 (BH)“Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; in plowing time and in harvest you shall rest.

22 “And you shall observe the Feast of Weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the year’s end.

23 (BI)“Three times in the year all your men shall appear before the Lord, the Lord God of Israel. 24 For I will (BJ)cast out the nations before you and enlarge your borders; neither will any man covet your land when you go up to appear before the Lord your God three times in the year.

25 “You shall not offer the blood of My sacrifice with leaven, (BK)nor shall the sacrifice of the Feast of the Passover be left until morning.

26 (BL)“The first of the firstfruits of your land you shall bring to the house of the Lord your God. You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.”

Moses and the Glory of the Lord

12 Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Lead these people,’(A) but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, ‘I know you by name(B) and you have found favor(C) with me.’ 13 If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways(D) so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.”(E)

14 The Lord replied, “My Presence(F) will go with you, and I will give you rest.”(G)

15 Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence(H) does not go with us, do not send us up from here. 16 How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us?(I) What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?”(J)

17 And the Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked,(K) because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.”(L)

18 Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.”(M)

19 And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass(N) in front of you, and I will proclaim my name,(O) the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.(P) 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see(Q) me and live.”

21 Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock(R) and cover you with my hand(S) until I have passed by. 23 Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.”

The New Stone Tablets

34 The Lord said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones,(T) and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets,(U) which you broke.(V) Be ready in the morning, and then come up on Mount Sinai.(W) Present yourself to me there on top of the mountain. No one is to come with you or be seen anywhere on the mountain;(X) not even the flocks and herds may graze in front of the mountain.”

So Moses chiseled(Y) out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning, as the Lord had commanded him; and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands.(Z) Then the Lord came down in the cloud(AA) and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord.(AB) And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate(AC) and gracious God, slow to anger,(AD) abounding in love(AE) and faithfulness,(AF) maintaining love to thousands,(AG) and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.(AH) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished;(AI) he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”(AJ)

Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. “Lord,” he said, “if I have found favor(AK) in your eyes, then let the Lord go with us.(AL) Although this is a stiff-necked(AM) people, forgive our wickedness and our sin,(AN) and take us as your inheritance.”(AO)

10 Then the Lord said: “I am making a covenant(AP) with you. Before all your people I will do wonders(AQ) never before done in any nation in all the world.(AR) The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the Lord, will do for you. 11 Obey what I command(AS) you today. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.(AT) 12 Be careful not to make a treaty(AU) with those who live in the land where you are going, or they will be a snare(AV) among you. 13 Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and cut down their Asherah poles.[a](AW) 14 Do not worship any other god,(AX) for the Lord, whose name(AY) is Jealous, is a jealous God.(AZ)

15 “Be careful not to make a treaty(BA) with those who live in the land; for when they prostitute(BB) themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you and you will eat their sacrifices.(BC) 16 And when you choose some of their daughters as wives(BD) for your sons and those daughters prostitute themselves to their gods,(BE) they will lead your sons to do the same.

17 “Do not make any idols.(BF)

18 “Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread.(BG) For seven days eat bread made without yeast,(BH) as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Aviv,(BI) for in that month you came out of Egypt.

19 “The first offspring(BJ) of every womb belongs to me, including all the firstborn males of your livestock, whether from herd or flock. 20 Redeem the firstborn donkey with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck.(BK) Redeem all your firstborn sons.(BL)

“No one is to appear before me empty-handed.(BM)

21 “Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest;(BN) even during the plowing season and harvest(BO) you must rest.

22 “Celebrate the Festival of Weeks with the firstfruits(BP) of the wheat harvest, and the Festival of Ingathering(BQ) at the turn of the year.[b] 23 Three times(BR) a year all your men are to appear before the Sovereign Lord, the God of Israel. 24 I will drive out nations(BS) before you and enlarge your territory,(BT) and no one will covet your land when you go up three times each year to appear before the Lord your God.

25 “Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast,(BU) and do not let any of the sacrifice from the Passover Festival remain until morning.(BV)

26 “Bring the best of the firstfruits(BW) of your soil to the house of the Lord your God.

“Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.”(BX)

Judgment on Gog

18 “And it will come to pass at the same time, when Gog comes against the land of Israel,” says the Lord God, “that My fury will show in My face. 19 For (A)in My jealousy (B)and in the fire of My wrath I have spoken: (C)‘Surely in that day there shall be a great [a]earthquake in the land of Israel, 20 so that (D)the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, all creeping things that creep on the earth, and all men who are on the face of the earth shall shake at My presence. (E)The mountains shall be thrown down, the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.’ 21 I will (F)call for (G)a sword against Gog throughout all My mountains,” says the Lord God. (H)“Every man’s sword will be against his brother. 22 And I will (I)bring him to judgment with (J)pestilence and bloodshed; (K)I will rain down on him, on his troops, and on the many peoples who are with him, flooding rain, (L)great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. 23 Thus I will magnify Myself and (M)sanctify Myself, (N)and I will be known in the eyes of many nations. Then they shall know that I am the Lord.” ’

Gog’s Armies Destroyed

39 “And (O)you, son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I am against you, O Gog, [b]the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal; and I will (P)turn you around and lead you on, (Q)bringing you up from the far north, and bring you against the mountains of Israel. Then I will knock the bow out of your left hand, and cause the arrows to fall out of your right hand. (R)You shall [c]fall upon the mountains of Israel, you and all your troops and the peoples who are with you; (S)I will give you to birds of prey of every sort and to the beasts of the field to be devoured. You shall [d]fall on [e]the open field; for I have spoken,” says the Lord God. (T)“And I will send fire on Magog and on those who live [f]in security in (U)the coastlands. Then they shall know that I am the Lord. (V)So I will make My holy name known in the midst of My people Israel, and I will not let them (W)profane My holy name anymore. (X)Then the nations shall know that I am the Lord, the Holy One in Israel. (Y)Surely it is coming, and it shall be done,” says the Lord God. “This is the day (Z)of which I have spoken.

“Then those who dwell in the cities of Israel will go out and set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and bucklers, the bows and arrows, the [g]javelins and spears; and they will make fires with them for seven years. 10 They will not take wood from the field nor cut down any from the forests, because they will make fires with the weapons; (AA)and they will plunder those who plundered them, and pillage those who pillaged them,” says the Lord God.

The Burial of Gog

11 “It will come to pass in that day that I will give Gog a burial place there in Israel, the valley of those who pass by east of the sea; and it will obstruct travelers, because there they will bury Gog and all his multitude. Therefore they will call it the Valley of [h]Hamon Gog. 12 For seven months the house of Israel will be burying them, (AB)in order to cleanse the land. 13 Indeed all the people of the land will be burying, and they will gain (AC)renown for it on the day that (AD)I am glorified,” says the Lord God. 14 “They will set apart men regularly employed, with the help of [i]a search party, to pass through the land and bury those bodies remaining on the ground, in order (AE)to cleanse it. At the end of seven months they will make a search. 15 The search party will pass through the land; and when anyone sees a man’s bone, he shall [j]set up a marker by it, till the buriers have buried it in the Valley of Hamon Gog. 16 The name of the city will also be [k]Hamonah. Thus they shall (AF)cleanse the land.” ’

18 This is what will happen in that day: When Gog attacks the land of Israel, my hot anger will be aroused, declares the Sovereign Lord. 19 In my zeal and fiery wrath I declare that at that time there shall be a great earthquake(A) in the land of Israel.(B) 20 The fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the beasts of the field, every creature that moves along the ground, and all the people on the face of the earth will tremble(C) at my presence. The mountains will be overturned,(D) the cliffs will crumble(E) and every wall will fall to the ground.(F) 21 I will summon a sword(G) against Gog on all my mountains, declares the Sovereign Lord. 39 “Son of man, prophesy against Gog(O) and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of[a] Meshek(P) and Tubal.(Q) I will turn you around and drag you along. I will bring you from the far north(R) and send you against the mountains of Israel.(S) Then I will strike your bow(T) from your left hand and make your arrows(U) drop from your right hand. On the mountains of Israel you will fall, you and all your troops and the nations with you. I will give you as food to all kinds of carrion birds(V) and to the wild animals.(W) You will fall in the open field, for I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.(X) I will send fire(Y) on Magog(Z) and on those who live in safety in the coastlands,(AA) and they will know(AB) that I am the Lord.

“‘I will make known my holy name among my people Israel. I will no longer let my holy name be profaned,(AC) and the nations will know(AD) that I the Lord am the Holy One in Israel.(AE) It is coming! It will surely take place, declares the Sovereign Lord. This is the day(AF) I have spoken of.

“‘Then those who live in the towns of Israel will go out and use the weapons for fuel and burn them up—the small and large shields, the bows and arrows,(AG) the war clubs and spears. For seven years they will use them for fuel.(AH) 10 They will not need to gather wood from the fields or cut it from the forests, because they will use the weapons for fuel. And they will plunder(AI) those who plundered them and loot those who looted them, declares the Sovereign Lord.(AJ)

11 “‘On that day I will give Gog a burial place in Israel, in the valley of those who travel east of the Sea. It will block the way of travelers, because Gog and all his hordes will be buried(AK) there. So it will be called the Valley of Hamon Gog.[b](AL)

12 “‘For seven months the Israelites will be burying them in order to cleanse the land.(AM) 13 All the people of the land will bury them, and the day I display my glory(AN) will be a memorable day for them, declares the Sovereign Lord. 14 People will be continually employed in cleansing the land. They will spread out across the land and, along with others, they will bury any bodies that are lying on the ground.

“‘After the seven months they will carry out a more detailed search. 15 As they go through the land, anyone who sees a human bone will leave a marker beside it until the gravediggers bury it in the Valley of Hamon Gog, 16 near a town called Hamonah.[c] And so they will cleanse the land.’

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

37 (A)On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, (B)“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 (C)He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, (D)out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 (E)But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those [a]believing in Him would receive; for the [b]Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet (F)glorified.

Who Is He?

40 Therefore [c]many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is (G)the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is (H)the Christ.”

But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee? 42 (I)Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, (J)where David was?” 43 So (K)there was a division among the people because of Him. 44 Now (L)some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him.
