The Wilderness Way(A)
17 Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people (B)change their minds when they see war, and (C)return to Egypt.” 18 So God (D)led the people around by way of the wilderness of the Red Sea. And the children of Israel went up in orderly ranks out of the land of Egypt.
19 And Moses took the (E)bones of (F)Joseph with him, for he had placed the children of Israel under solemn oath, saying, (G)“God will surely [a]visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here with you.”
20 So (H)they took their journey from (I)Succoth and camped in Etham at the edge of the wilderness. 21 And (J)the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night. 22 He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people.
The Red Sea Crossing
14 Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, (K)that they turn and camp before (L)Pi Hahiroth, between (M)Migdol and the sea, opposite Baal Zephon; you shall camp before it by the sea. 3 For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, (N)‘They are bewildered by the land; the wilderness has closed them in.’ 4 Then (O)I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, so that he will pursue them; and I (P)will gain honor over Pharaoh and over all his army, (Q)that the Egyptians may know that I am the Lord.” And they did so.
5 Now it was told the king of Egypt that the people had fled, and (R)the heart of Pharaoh and his servants was turned against the people; and they said, “Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us?” 6 So he [b]made ready his chariot and took his people with him. 7 Also, he took (S)six hundred choice chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt with captains over every one of them. 8 And the Lord (T)hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued the children of Israel; and (U)the children of Israel went out with boldness. 9 So the (V)Egyptians pursued them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen and his army, and overtook them camping by the sea beside Pi Hahiroth, before Baal Zephon.
10 And when Pharaoh drew near, the children of Israel lifted their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians marched after them. So they were very afraid, and the children of Israel (W)cried out to the Lord. 11 (X)Then they said to Moses, “Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you so dealt with us, to bring us up out of Egypt? 12 (Y)Is this not the word that we told you in Egypt, saying, ‘Let us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the wilderness.”
13 And Moses said to the people, (Z)“Do not be afraid. (AA)Stand still, and see the (AB)salvation[c] of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall (AC)see again no more forever. 14 (AD)The Lord will fight for you, and you shall (AE)hold[d] your peace.”
15 And the Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to Me? Tell the children of Israel to go forward. 16 But (AF)lift up your rod, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it. And the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea. 17 And I indeed will (AG)harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them. So I will (AH)gain honor over Pharaoh and over all his army, his chariots, and his horsemen. 18 Then the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I have gained honor for Myself over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.”
19 And the Angel of God, (AI)who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud went from before them and stood behind them. 20 So it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. Thus it was a cloud and darkness to the one, and it gave light by night to the other, so that the one did not come near the other all that night.
21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and (AJ)made the sea into dry land, and the waters were (AK)divided. 22 So (AL)the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea on the dry ground, and the waters were (AM)a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. 23 And the Egyptians pursued and went after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.
24 Now it came to pass, in the morning (AN)watch, that (AO)the Lord looked down upon the army of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and cloud, and He [e]troubled the army of the Egyptians. 25 And He [f]took off their chariot wheels, so that they drove them with difficulty; and the Egyptians said, “Let us flee from the face of Israel, for the Lord (AP)fights for them against the Egyptians.”
26 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may come back upon the Egyptians, on their chariots, and on their horsemen.” 27 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and when the morning appeared, the sea (AQ)returned to its full depth, while the Egyptians were fleeing into it. So the Lord (AR)overthrew[g] the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. 28 Then (AS)the waters returned and covered the chariots, the horsemen, and all the army of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them. Not so much as one of them remained. 29 But (AT)the children of Israel had walked on dry land in the midst of the sea, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.
30 So the Lord (AU)saved[h] Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel (AV)saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. 31 Thus Israel saw the great [i]work which the Lord had done in Egypt; so the people feared the Lord, and (AW)believed the Lord and His servant Moses.
The Song of Moses(AX)
15 Then (AY)Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to the Lord, and spoke, saying:
“I will (AZ)sing to the Lord,
For He has triumphed gloriously!
The horse and its rider
He has thrown into the sea!
2 The Lord is my strength and (BA)song,
And He has become my salvation;
He is my God, and (BB)I will praise Him;
My (BC)father’s God, and I (BD)will exalt Him.
3 The Lord is a man of (BE)war;
The Lord is His (BF)name.
4 (BG)Pharaoh’s chariots and his army He has cast into the sea;
(BH)His chosen captains also are drowned in the Red Sea.
5 The depths have covered them;
(BI)They sank to the bottom like a stone.
6 “Your (BJ)right hand, O Lord, has become glorious in power;
Your right hand, O Lord, has dashed the enemy in pieces.
7 And in the greatness of Your (BK)excellence
You have overthrown those who rose against You;
You sent forth (BL)Your wrath;
It (BM)consumed them (BN)like stubble.
8 And (BO)with the blast of Your nostrils
The waters were gathered together;
(BP)The floods stood upright like a heap;
The depths [j]congealed in the heart of the sea.
9 (BQ)The enemy said, ‘I will pursue,
I will overtake,
I will (BR)divide the spoil;
My desire shall be satisfied on them.
I will draw my sword,
My hand shall destroy them.’
10 You blew with Your wind,
The sea covered them;
They sank like lead in the mighty waters.
11 “Who(BS) is like You, O Lord, among the [k]gods?
Who is like You, (BT)glorious in holiness,
Fearful in (BU)praises, (BV)doing wonders?
12 You stretched out Your right hand;
The earth swallowed them.
13 You in Your mercy have (BW)led forth
The people whom You have redeemed;
You have guided them in Your strength
To (BX)Your holy habitation.
14 “The (BY)people will hear and be afraid;
(BZ)Sorrow[l] will take hold of the inhabitants of Philistia.
15 (CA)Then (CB)the chiefs of Edom will be dismayed;
(CC)The mighty men of Moab,
Trembling will take hold of them;
(CD)All the inhabitants of Canaan will (CE)melt away.
16 (CF)Fear and dread will fall on them;
By the greatness of Your arm
They will be (CG)as still as a stone,
Till Your people pass over, O Lord,
Till the people pass over
(CH)Whom You have purchased.
17 You will bring them in and (CI)plant them
In the (CJ)mountain of Your inheritance,
In the place, O Lord, which You have made
For Your own dwelling,
The (CK)sanctuary, O Lord, which Your hands have established.
18 “The(CL) Lord shall reign forever and ever.”
19 For the (CM)horses of Pharaoh went with his chariots and his horsemen into the sea, and (CN)the Lord brought back the waters of the sea upon them. But the children of Israel went on dry land in the midst of the sea.
The Song of Miriam(CO)
20 Then Miriam (CP)the prophetess, (CQ)the sister of Aaron, (CR)took the timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her (CS)with timbrels and with dances. 21 And Miriam (CT)answered them:
(CU)“Sing to the Lord,
For He has triumphed gloriously!
The horse and its rider
He has thrown into the sea!”
Bitter Waters Made Sweet
22 So Moses brought Israel from the Red Sea; then they went out into the Wilderness of (CV)Shur. And they went three days in the wilderness and found no (CW)water. 23 Now when they came to (CX)Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore the name of it was called [m]Marah. 24 And the people (CY)complained against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” 25 So he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. (CZ)When he cast it into the waters, the waters were made sweet.
There He (DA)made a statute and an [n]ordinance for them, and there (DB)He tested them, 26 and said, (DC)“If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the (DD)diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord (DE)who heals you.”
27 (DF)Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve wells of water and seventy palm trees; so they camped there by the waters.
Bread from Heaven
16 And they (DG)journeyed from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came to the Wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and (DH)Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they departed from the land of Egypt. 2 Then the whole congregation of the children of Israel (DI)complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. 3 And the children of Israel said to them, (DJ)“Oh, that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, (DK)when we sat by the pots of meat and when we ate bread to the full! For you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain (DL)bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather [o]a certain quota every day, that I may (DM)test them, whether they will (DN)walk in My law or not. 5 And it shall be on the sixth day that they shall prepare what they bring in, and (DO)it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.”
6 Then Moses and Aaron said to all the children of Israel, (DP)“At evening you shall know that the Lord has brought you out of the land of Egypt. 7 And in the morning you shall see (DQ)the glory of the Lord; for He (DR)hears your complaints against the Lord. But (DS)what are we, that you complain against us?” 8 Also Moses said, “This shall be seen when the Lord gives you meat to eat in the evening, and in the morning bread to the full; for the Lord hears your complaints which you make against Him. And what are we? Your complaints are not against us but (DT)against the Lord.”
9 Then Moses spoke to Aaron, “Say to all the congregation of the children of Israel, (DU)‘Come near before the Lord, for He has heard your complaints.’ ” 10 Now it came to pass, as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the Lord (DV)appeared in the cloud.
11 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 12 (DW)“I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel. Speak to them, saying, (DX)‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and (DY)in the morning you shall be filled with bread. And you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’ ”
13 So it was that (DZ)quail came up at evening and covered the camp, and in the morning (EA)the dew lay all around the camp. 14 And when the layer of dew lifted, there, on the surface of the wilderness, was (EB)a small round (EC)substance, as fine as frost on the ground. 15 So when the children of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was.
And Moses said to them, (ED)“This is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat. 16 This is the thing which the Lord has commanded: ‘Let every man gather it (EE)according to each one’s need, one (EF)omer for each person, according to the number of persons; let every man take for those who are in his tent.’ ”
17 Then the children of Israel did so and gathered, some more, some less. 18 So when they measured it by omers, (EG)he who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack. Every man had gathered according to each one’s need. 19 And Moses said, “Let no one (EH)leave any of it till morning.” 20 Notwithstanding they did not [p]heed Moses. But some of them left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them. 21 So they gathered it every morning, every man according to his need. And when the sun became hot, it melted.
22 And so it was, on the sixth day, that they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. And all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. 23 Then he said to them, “This is what the Lord has said: ‘Tomorrow is (EI)a Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord. Bake what you will bake today, and boil what you will boil; and lay up for yourselves all that remains, to be kept until morning.’ ” 24 So they laid it up till morning, as Moses commanded; and it did not (EJ)stink, nor were there any worms in it. 25 Then Moses said, “Eat that today, for today is a Sabbath to the Lord; today you will not find it in the field. 26 (EK)Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will be none.”
27 Now it happened that some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather, but they found none. 28 And the Lord said to Moses, “How long (EL)do you refuse to keep My commandments and My laws? 29 See! For the Lord has given you the Sabbath; therefore He gives you on the sixth day bread for two days. Let every man remain in his place; let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.” 30 So the people rested on the seventh day.
31 And the house of Israel called its name [q]Manna. And (EM)it was like white coriander seed, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey.
32 Then Moses said, “This is the thing which the Lord has commanded: ‘Fill an omer with it, to be kept for your generations, that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.’ ” 33 And Moses said to Aaron, (EN)“Take a pot and put an omer of manna in it, and lay it up before the Lord, to be kept for your generations.” 34 As the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up (EO)before the Testimony, to be kept. 35 And the children of Israel (EP)ate manna (EQ)forty years, (ER)until they came to an inhabited land; they ate manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan. 36 Now an omer is one-tenth of an ephah.
Water from the Rock(ES)
17 Then (ET)all the congregation of the children of Israel set out on their journey from the Wilderness of (EU)Sin, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped in Rephidim; but there was no water for the people to (EV)drink. 2 (EW)Therefore the people contended with Moses, and said, “Give us water, that we may drink.”
So Moses said to them, “Why do you contend with me? Why do you (EX)tempt the Lord?”
3 And the people thirsted there for water, and the people (EY)complained against Moses, and said, “Why is it you have brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our (EZ)livestock with thirst?”
4 So Moses (FA)cried out to the Lord, saying, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to (FB)stone[r] me!”
5 And the Lord said to Moses, (FC)“Go on before the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel. Also take in your hand your rod with which (FD)you struck the river, and go. 6 (FE)Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.”
And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 So he called the name of the place (FF)Massah[s] and [t]Meribah, because of the contention of the children of Israel, and because they [u]tempted the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
Victory over the Amalekites(FG)
8 (FH)Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim. 9 And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with (FI)the rod of God in my hand.” 10 So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 And so it was, when Moses (FJ)held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12 But Moses’ hands became [v]heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. 13 So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, (FK)“Write this for a memorial in the book and recount it in the hearing of Joshua, that (FL)I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 And Moses built an altar and called its name, [w]The-Lord-Is-My-Banner; 16 for he said, “Because [x]the Lord has (FM)sworn: the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”

Crossing the Sea
17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.”(A) 18 So God led(B) the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea.[a] The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.(C)
19 Moses took the bones of Joseph(D) with him because Joseph had made the Israelites swear an oath. He had said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place.”[b](E)
20 After leaving Sukkoth(F) they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert.(G) 21 By day the Lord went ahead(H) of them in a pillar of cloud(I) to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. 22 Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left(J) its place in front of the people.
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 “Tell the Israelites to turn back and encamp near Pi Hahiroth, between Migdol(K) and the sea. They are to encamp by the sea, directly opposite Baal Zephon.(L) 3 Pharaoh will think, ‘The Israelites are wandering around the land in confusion, hemmed in by the desert.’ 4 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart,(M) and he will pursue them.(N) But I will gain glory(O) for myself through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.”(P) So the Israelites did this.
5 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled,(Q) Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds(R) about them and said, “What have we done? We have let the Israelites go and have lost their services!” 6 So he had his chariot made ready and took his army with him. 7 He took six hundred of the best chariots,(S) along with all the other chariots of Egypt, with officers over all of them. 8 The Lord hardened the heart(T) of Pharaoh king of Egypt, so that he pursued the Israelites, who were marching out boldly.(U) 9 The Egyptians—all Pharaoh’s horses(V) and chariots, horsemen[c] and troops(W)—pursued the Israelites and overtook(X) them as they camped by the sea near Pi Hahiroth, opposite Baal Zephon.(Y)
10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried(Z) out to the Lord. 11 They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die?(AA) What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!”(AB)
13 Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid.(AC) Stand firm and you will see(AD) the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see(AE) again. 14 The Lord will fight(AF) for you; you need only to be still.”(AG)
15 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me?(AH) Tell the Israelites to move on. 16 Raise your staff(AI) and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water(AJ) so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground. 17 I will harden the hearts(AK) of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them.(AL) And I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. 18 The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord(AM) when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen.”
19 Then the angel of God,(AN) who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud(AO) also moved from in front and stood behind(AP) them, 20 coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness(AQ) to the one side and light to the other side; so neither went near the other all night long.
21 Then Moses stretched out his hand(AR) over the sea,(AS) and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind(AT) and turned it into dry land.(AU) The waters were divided,(AV) 22 and the Israelites went through the sea(AW) on dry ground,(AX) with a wall(AY) of water on their right and on their left.
23 The Egyptians pursued them, and all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots and horsemen(AZ) followed them into the sea. 24 During the last watch of the night the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud(BA) at the Egyptian army and threw it into confusion.(BB) 25 He jammed[d] the wheels of their chariots so that they had difficulty driving. And the Egyptians said, “Let’s get away from the Israelites! The Lord is fighting(BC) for them against Egypt.”(BD)
26 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen.” 27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea went back to its place.(BE) The Egyptians were fleeing toward[e] it, and the Lord swept them into the sea.(BF) 28 The water flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen—the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea.(BG) Not one of them survived.(BH)
29 But the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground,(BI) with a wall(BJ) of water on their right and on their left. 30 That day the Lord saved(BK) Israel from the hands of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore. 31 And when the Israelites saw the mighty hand(BL) of the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared(BM) the Lord and put their trust(BN) in him and in Moses his servant.
The Song of Moses and Miriam
15 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song(BO) to the Lord:
“I will sing(BP) to the Lord,
for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver(BQ)
he has hurled into the sea.(BR)
2 “The Lord is my strength(BS) and my defense[f];
he has become my salvation.(BT)
He is my God,(BU) and I will praise him,
my father’s God, and I will exalt(BV) him.
3 The Lord is a warrior;(BW)
the Lord is his name.(BX)
4 Pharaoh’s chariots and his army(BY)
he has hurled into the sea.
The best of Pharaoh’s officers
are drowned in the Red Sea.[g]
5 The deep waters(BZ) have covered them;
they sank to the depths like a stone.(CA)
6 Your right hand,(CB) Lord,
was majestic in power.
Your right hand,(CC) Lord,
shattered(CD) the enemy.
7 “In the greatness of your majesty(CE)
you threw down those who opposed you.
You unleashed your burning anger;(CF)

8 By the blast of your nostrils(CH)
the waters piled up.(CI)
The surging waters stood up like a wall;(CJ)
the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea.(CK)
9 The enemy boasted,
‘I will pursue,(CL) I will overtake them.
I will divide the spoils;(CM)
I will gorge myself on them.
I will draw my sword
and my hand will destroy them.’
10 But you blew with your breath,(CN)
and the sea covered them.
They sank like lead
in the mighty waters.(CO)
11 Who among the gods
is like you,(CP) Lord?
Who is like you—
majestic in holiness,(CQ)
awesome in glory,(CR)
working wonders?(CS)
12 “You stretch out(CT) your right hand,
and the earth swallows your enemies.(CU)
13 In your unfailing love you will lead(CV)

By the power of your arm

the place, Lord, you made for your dwelling,(DM)

18 “The Lord reigns

19 When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and horsemen[j] went into the sea,(DP) the Lord brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground.(DQ) 20 Then Miriam(DR) the prophet,(DS) Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels(DT) and dancing.(DU) 21 Miriam sang(DV) to them:
“Sing to the Lord,
for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver(DW)
he has hurled into the sea.”(DX)
The Waters of Marah and Elim
22 Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert(DY) of Shur.(DZ) For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water.(EA) 23 When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.[k](EB)) 24 So the people grumbled(EC) against Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?”(ED)
25 Then Moses cried out(EE) to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw(EF) it into the water, and the water became fit to drink.
There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test.(EG) 26 He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep(EH) all his decrees,(EI) I will not bring on you any of the diseases(EJ) I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals(EK) you.”
27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped(EL) there near the water.
Manna and Quail
16 The whole Israelite community set out from Elim and came to the Desert of Sin,(EM) which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had come out of Egypt.(EN) 2 In the desert the whole community grumbled(EO) against Moses and Aaron. 3 The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt!(EP) There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food(EQ) we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”(ER)
4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven(ES) for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test(ET) them and see whether they will follow my instructions. 5 On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice(EU) as much as they gather on the other days.”
6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening you will know that it was the Lord who brought you out of Egypt,(EV) 7 and in the morning you will see the glory(EW) of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling(EX) against him. Who are we, that you should grumble against us?”(EY) 8 Moses also said, “You will know that it was the Lord when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because he has heard your grumbling(EZ) against him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the Lord.”(FA)
9 Then Moses told Aaron, “Say to the entire Israelite community, ‘Come before the Lord, for he has heard your grumbling.’”
10 While Aaron was speaking to the whole Israelite community, they looked toward the desert, and there was the glory(FB) of the Lord appearing in the cloud.(FC)
11 The Lord said to Moses, 12 “I have heard the grumbling(FD) of the Israelites. Tell them, ‘At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.’”(FE)
13 That evening quail(FF) came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew(FG) around the camp. 14 When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost(FH) on the ground appeared on the desert floor. 15 When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “What is it?” For they did not know(FI) what it was.
Moses said to them, “It is the bread(FJ) the Lord has given you to eat. 16 This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Everyone is to gather as much as they need. Take an omer[l](FK) for each person you have in your tent.’”
17 The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little. 18 And when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.(FL) Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed.
19 Then Moses said to them, “No one is to keep any of it until morning.”(FM)
20 However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell.(FN) So Moses was angry(FO) with them.
21 Each morning everyone gathered as much as they needed, and when the sun grew hot, it melted away. 22 On the sixth day, they gathered twice(FP) as much—two omers[m] for each person—and the leaders of the community(FQ) came and reported this to Moses. 23 He said to them, “This is what the Lord commanded: ‘Tomorrow is to be a day of sabbath rest, a holy sabbath(FR) to the Lord. So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning.’”
24 So they saved it until morning, as Moses commanded, and it did not stink or get maggots in it. 25 “Eat it today,” Moses said, “because today is a sabbath to the Lord. You will not find any of it on the ground today. 26 Six days you are to gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath,(FS) there will not be any.”
27 Nevertheless, some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather it, but they found none. 28 Then the Lord said to Moses, “How long will you[n] refuse to keep my commands(FT) and my instructions? 29 Bear in mind that the Lord has given you the Sabbath; that is why on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Everyone is to stay where they are on the seventh day; no one is to go out.” 30 So the people rested on the seventh day.
31 The people of Israel called the bread manna.[o](FU) It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey. 32 Moses said, “This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Take an omer of manna and keep it for the generations to come, so they can see the bread I gave you to eat in the wilderness when I brought you out of Egypt.’”
33 So Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar and put an omer of manna(FV) in it. Then place it before the Lord to be kept for the generations to come.”
34 As the Lord commanded Moses, Aaron put the manna with the tablets of the covenant law,(FW) so that it might be preserved. 35 The Israelites ate manna(FX) forty years,(FY) until they came to a land that was settled; they ate manna until they reached the border of Canaan.(FZ)

Water From the Rock
17 The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin,(GC) traveling from place to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim,(GD) but there was no water(GE) for the people to drink. 2 So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water(GF) to drink.”(GG)
Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?”(GH)
3 But the people were thirsty(GI) for water there, and they grumbled(GJ) against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die(GK) of thirst?”
4 Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone(GL) me.”
5 The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff(GM) with which you struck the Nile,(GN) and go. 6 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb.(GO) Strike(GP) the rock, and water(GQ) will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the place Massah[p](GR) and Meribah[q](GS) because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
The Amalekites Defeated
8 The Amalekites(GT) came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.(GU) 9 Moses said to Joshua,(GV) “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff(GW) of God in my hands.”
10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur(GX) went to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning,(GY) but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset.(GZ) 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite(HA) army with the sword.
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write(HB) this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out(HC) the name of Amalek(HD) from under heaven.”
15 Moses built an altar(HE) and called(HF) it The Lord is my Banner. 16 He said, “Because hands were lifted up against[r] the throne of the Lord,[s] the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites(HG) from generation to generation.”(HH)

The Song of Deborah
5 Then Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam (R)sang on that day, saying:

Bless the Lord!

I, even (V)I, will sing to the Lord;

22 Just then Barak came by in pursuit of Sisera, and Jael(AI) went out to meet him. “Come,” she said, “I will show you the man you’re looking for.” So he went in with her, and there lay Sisera with the tent peg through his temple—dead.(AJ)
23 On that day God subdued(AK) Jabin(AL) king of Canaan before the Israelites. 24 And the hand of the Israelites pressed harder and harder against Jabin king of Canaan until they destroyed him.(AM)

because they did not come to help the Lord,
to help the Lord against the mighty.’
24 “Most blessed of women(CL) be Jael,(CM)
the wife of Heber the Kenite,(CN)
most blessed of tent-dwelling women.
25 He asked for water, and she gave him milk;(CO)
in a bowl fit for nobles she brought him curdled milk.
26 Her hand reached for the tent peg,
her right hand for the workman’s hammer.
She struck Sisera, she crushed his head,
she shattered and pierced his temple.(CP)
27 At her feet he sank,
he fell; there he lay.
At her feet he sank, he fell;
where he sank, there he fell—dead(CQ).
28 “Through the window(CR) peered Sisera’s mother;
behind the lattice she cried out,(CS)
‘Why is his chariot so long in coming?
Why is the clatter of his chariots delayed?’
29 The wisest of her ladies answer her;
indeed, she keeps saying to herself,
30 ‘Are they not finding and dividing the spoils:(CT)
a woman or two for each man,
colorful garments as plunder for Sisera,
colorful garments embroidered,
highly embroidered garments(CU) for my neck—
all this as plunder?(CV)’
31 “So may all your enemies perish,(CW) Lord!
But may all who love you be like the sun(CX)

Jesus Walks on the Sea(A)
15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him (B)king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.
16 (C)Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. 18 Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. 19 So when they had rowed about [a]three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were (D)afraid. 20 But He said to them, (E)“It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.
The Bread from Heaven
22 On the following day, when the people who were standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except [b]that one [c]which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone— 23 however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks— 24 when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, (F)seeking Jesus. 25 And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?”
26 Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27 (G)Do not labor for the food which perishes, but (H)for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, (I)because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”
28 Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?”
29 Jesus answered and said to them, (J)“This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
30 Therefore they said to Him, (K)“What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do? 31 (L)Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, (M)‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”
32 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but (N)My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 (O)Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”
35 And Jesus said to them, (P)“I am the bread of life. Rejected by His Own
41 The Jews then [e]complained about Him, because He said, “I am the bread which came down from heaven.” 42 And they said, (AA)“Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”
43 Jesus therefore answered and said to them, [f]“Do not murmur among yourselves. 44 (AB)No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me (AC)draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, (AD)‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ (AE)Therefore everyone who [g]has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me. 46 (AF)Not that anyone has seen the Father, (AG)except He who is from God; He has seen the Father. 47 Most assuredly, I say to you, (AH)he who believes [h]in Me has everlasting life. 48 (AI)I am the bread of life. 49 (AJ)Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 50 (AK)This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread (AL)which came down from heaven. Many Disciples Turn Away
60 (AT)Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a [k]hard saying; who can understand it?”
61 When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples [l]complained about this, He said to them, “Does this [m]offend you? 62 (AU)What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before? 63 (AV)It is the Spirit who gives life; the (AW)flesh profits nothing. The (AX)words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. 64 But (AY)there are some of you who do not believe.” For (AZ)Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him. 65 And He said, “Therefore (BA)I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.”
66 (BB)From that time many of His disciples went [n]back and walked with Him no more. 67 Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?”
68 But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have (BC)the words of eternal life. 69 (BD)Also we have come to believe and know that You are the [o]Christ, the Son of the living God.”
70 Jesus answered them, (BE)“Did I not choose you, the twelve, (BF)and one of you is a devil?” 71 He spoke of (BG)Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, for it was he who would (BH)betray Him, being one of the twelve.

15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king(A) by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.(B)
Jesus Walks on the Water(C)
16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles,[a] they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water;(D) and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”(E) 21 Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake(F) realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.(G) 23 Then some boats from Tiberias(H) landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.(I) 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
Jesus the Bread of Life
25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi,(J) when did you get here?”
26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me,(K) not because you saw the signs(L) I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures(M) to eternal life,(N) which the Son of Man(O) will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal(P) of approval.”
28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe(Q) in the one he has sent.”(R)
30 So they asked him, “What sign(S) then will you give that we may see it and believe you?(T) What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna(U) in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[b]”(V)
32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven(W) and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”(X)

Many Disciples Desert Jesus
60 On hearing it, many of his disciples(BG) said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”(BH)
61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?(BI) 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man(BJ) ascend to where he was before!(BK) 63 The Spirit gives life;(BL) the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[d] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known(BM) from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.(BN) 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”(BO)
66 From this time many of his disciples(BP) turned back and no longer followed him.
67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.(BQ)
68 Simon Peter answered him,(BR) “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.(BS) 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”(BT)
70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you,(BU) the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”(BV) 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot,(BW) who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)(BX)
