⁴ ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.^(A)

²⁰ “I am going to send an angel in front of you, to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared.^{(A) 21} Be attentive to him and listen to his voice; do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgression, for my name is in him.^(B)

²² “But if you listen attentively to his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and a foe to your foes.^(C)

²³ “When my angel goes in front of you and brings you to the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, and I blot them out,^(D)

³¹ and in the wilderness, where you saw how the Lord your God carried you, just as one carries a child, all the way that you traveled until you reached this place.^(A)

⁷ “It was not because you were more numerous than any other people that the Lord set his heart on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples.^(A)

⁸ It was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath that he swore to your ancestors that the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.^(A)

¹⁶ So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the Lord, and he could no longer bear to see Israel suffer.^(A)
