15 otherwise you might make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they would prostitute themselves with their gods and (A)sacrifice to their gods, and someone (B)might invite you [a]to eat of his sacrifice, 16 and (C)you might take some of his daughters for your sons, and his daughters might prostitute themselves with their gods and cause your sons also to prostitute themselves with their gods. 17 (D)You shall not make for yourself any gods cast in metal.

14 Therefore, my (P)beloved, flee from (Q)idolatry. 15 I speak as to wise people; you then, judge what I say. 16 Is the (R)cup of blessing which we bless not a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is the (S)bread which we break not a sharing in the body of Christ? 17 Since there is one loaf, we (T)who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf. 18 Look at [e]the people of (U)Israel; are those who (V)eat the sacrifices not partners in the altar? 19 What do I mean then? That food sacrificed to idols is anything, or (W)that an idol is [f]anything? 20 No, but I say that things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they (X)sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become partners with demons. 21 (Y)You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and (Z)the table of demons. 22 Or do we (AA)provoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not (AB)stronger than He, are we?
23 (AC)All things are permitted, but not all things are of benefit. All things are permitted, but not all things [g](AD)build people up. 24 No one is to (AE)seek his own advantage, but rather that of his [h]neighbor. 25 (AF)Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking questions, for the sake of conscience; 26 (AG)for the earth is the Lord’s, and [i]all it contains. 27 If (AH)one of the unbelievers invites you and you want to go, (AI)eat anything that is set before you without asking questions, for the sake of conscience. 28 But (AJ)if anyone says to you, “This is meat sacrificed to idols,” do not eat it, for the sake of that one who informed you and for the sake of conscience; 29 Now by “conscience” I do not mean your own, but the other person’s; for (AK)why is my freedom judged by another’s conscience? 30 If I partake with thankfulness, (AL)why am I slandered about that for which I (AM)give thanks?
31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or (AN)whatever you do, do all things for the glory of God. 32 (AO)Do not offend Jews or Greeks, or (AP)the church of God; 33 just as I also (AQ)please everyone in all things, (AR)not seeking my own benefit but the benefit of the many, (AS)so that they may be saved.

7 Do not be idolaters,(A) as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”[a](B) 8 We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.(C) 9 We should not test Christ,[b](D) as some of them did—and were killed by snakes.(E) 10 And do not grumble, as some of them did(F)—and were killed(G) by the destroying angel.(H)
11 These things happened to them as examples(I) and were written down as warnings for us,(J) on whom the culmination of the ages has come.(K) 12 So, if you think you are standing firm,(L) be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation[c] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful;(M) he will not let you be tempted[d] beyond what you can bear.(N) But when you are tempted,[e] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
Idol Feasts and the Lord’s Supper
14 Therefore, my dear friends,(O) flee from idolatry.(P) 15 I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break(Q) a participation in the body of Christ?(R) 17 Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body,(S) for we all share the one loaf.
18 Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices(T) participate in the altar? 19 Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?(U) 20 No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons,(V) not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons.(W) 22 Are we trying to arouse the Lord’s jealousy?(X) Are we stronger than he?(Y)
The Believer’s Freedom
23 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial.(Z) “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. 24 No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.(AA)
25 Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,(AB) 26 for, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.”[f](AC)
27 If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you(AD) without raising questions of conscience. 28 But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience.(AE) 29 I am referring to the other person’s conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom(AF) being judged by another’s conscience? 30 If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?(AG)
31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.(AH) 32 Do not cause anyone to stumble,(AI) whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God(AJ)— 33 even as I try to please everyone in every way.(AK) For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many,(AL) so that they may be saved.(AM)
