Judgment on Gentile Nations—Ammon

25 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, set your face against the (A)sons of Ammon and prophesy against them, and say to the sons of Ammon, ‘Hear the word of the Lord [a]God! This is what the Lord God says: “Because you said, ‘(B)Aha!’ against My sanctuary when it was profaned, and against the land of Israel when it was made desolate, and against the house of Judah when they went into exile, therefore, behold, I am going to give you to the [b](C)people of the east as a possession, and they will set up their encampments among you and make their dwellings among you; they will (D)eat your fruit and drink your milk. I will make (E)Rabbah a pasture for camels, and the sons of Ammon a resting place for flocks. Then you will know that I am the Lord.” For this is what the Lord God says: “Because you have (F)clapped your hands and stamped your feet, and have (G)rejoiced with all the malice in your soul against the land of Israel, therefore, behold, I have (H)reached out with My hand against you and I will give you as (I)plunder to the nations. And I will (J)cut you off from the peoples and (K)eliminate you from the lands. I will exterminate you. So you will (L)know that I am the Lord.”

Moab

‘The Lord God says this: “Because (M)Moab and Seir say, ‘Behold, the house of Judah is like all the nations,’ therefore, behold, I am going to [c]deprive the flank of Moab of its cities, of its cities [d]which are on its frontiers, the glory of the land, (N)Beth-jeshimoth, (O)Baal-meon, and (P)Kiriathaim; 10 and I will give it as a possession along with the sons of Ammon to the [e](Q)people of the east, so that the sons of Ammon will not be remembered among the nations. 11 So I will execute judgments on Moab, and they will know that I am the Lord.”

Edom

12 ‘The Lord God says this: “Because (R)Edom has acted against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has incurred great guilt, and avenged themselves upon them,” 13 therefore this is what the Lord God says: “I will also (S)reach out with My hand against Edom and (T)eliminate human and animal life from it. And I will turn it into ruins; from (U)Teman even to (V)Dedan they will fall by the sword. 14 And (W)I will inflict My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel. Therefore, they will act in Edom (X)in accordance with My anger and My wrath; so they will know My vengeance,” declares the Lord God.

Philistia

15 ‘This is what the Lord God says: “Because the Philistines have acted in (Y)revenge, and have taken vengeance with malice in their souls to destroy with everlasting hostility,” 16 therefore this is what the Lord God says: “Behold, I am going to (Z)reach out with My hand against the Philistines and eliminate the (AA)Cherethites; and I will destroy the remnant of the seacoast. 17 I will execute great vengeance on them with wrathful rebukes; and they will (AB)know that I am the Lord, when I inflict My vengeance on them.”’”

Judgment on Tyre

26 Now in the eleventh year, on the first of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, because (AC)Tyre has said in regard to Jerusalem, ‘Aha! The (AD)gateway of the peoples is broken; it has [f](AE)opened to me. I shall be filled, now that she is laid waste,’ therefore this is what the Lord [g]God says: ‘Behold, I am against you, Tyre, and I will bring up (AF)many nations against you, as the (AG)sea brings up its waves. They will (AH)destroy the walls of Tyre and tear down her towers; and I will sweep her debris away from her and make her a bare rock. She will become a dry place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea, for I have spoken,’ declares the Lord God; ‘and she will become (AI)plunder for the nations. Also her (AJ)daughters who are [h]on the mainland will be killed by the sword, and they will know that I am the Lord.’”

For the Lord God says this: “Behold, I am going to bring upon Tyre from the north Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, (AK)king of kings, with horses, (AL)chariots, cavalry, and [i]a great army. He will kill your daughters [j]on the mainland with the sword; and he will make (AM)siege walls against you, pile up an (AN)assault ramp against you, and raise up a large shield against you. And he will direct the blow of his battering rams against your walls, and he will tear down your towers with his [k]axes. 10 Because of the multitude of his (AO)horses, the dust raised by them will cover you; your walls will (AP)shake from the noise of cavalry, [l]wagons, and chariots when he (AQ)enters your gates as warriors enter a city that is breached. 11 With the hoofs of his (AR)horses he will trample all your streets. He will kill your people with the sword, and your strong [m]pillars will (AS)go down to the ground. 12 Also they will take your riches as spoils and plunder your (AT)merchandise, (AU)tear down your walls and destroy your (AV)delightful houses, and [n]throw your stones, your timbers, and your debris (AW)into the water. 13 So I will put an end to the sound of your (AX)songs, and the sound of your (AY)harps will no longer be heard. 14 I will turn you into a bare rock; you will become a dry place for the spreading of nets. You will not be (AZ)rebuilt, for I the (BA)Lord have spoken,” declares the Lord God.

15 The Lord God says this to Tyre: “Will the (BB)coastlands not (BC)shake from the sound of your downfall when the wounded groan, when the slaughter takes place in your midst? 16 Then all the princes of the sea will (BD)descend from their thrones, remove their robes, and strip off their colorfully woven garments. They will (BE)clothe themselves with [o]trembling; they will sit on the ground, (BF)tremble again and again, and be appalled at you. 17 And they will take up a (BG)song of mourning over you and say to you,

(BH)How you have perished, you inhabited one,
From the seas, you famous city,
Which was (BI)mighty on the sea,
She and her inhabitants,
Who imposed [p]her terror
On all her inhabitants!
18 Now the (BJ)coastlands will tremble
On the day of your downfall;
Yes, the coastlands which are by the sea
Will be horrified at your (BK)passing.’”

19 For this is what the Lord God says: “When I make you a desolate city, like the cities which are not inhabited, when I (BL)bring up the deep over you and the great waters cover you, 20 then I will bring you down with those who (BM)go down to the pit, to the people of old, and I will make you remain in the (BN)lower parts of the earth, like the ancient ruins, with those who go down to the pit, so that you will not [q]be inhabited; but I will put (BO)glory in the land of the living. 21 I will [r]cause you (BP)sudden terrors and you will no longer exist; though you will be sought, (BQ)you will never be found again,” declares the Lord God.

Grief over Tyre

27 Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “And you, son of man, (BR)take up a song of mourning over Tyre; and say to Tyre, (BS)who sits at the [s]entrance to the sea, (BT)merchant of the peoples to many coastlands, ‘This is what the Lord [t]God says:

“Tyre, you have said, ‘I am perfect in beauty.’
Your borders are in the heart of the seas;
Your builders have perfected your beauty.
They have [u]made all your planks of juniper trees from (BU)Senir;
They have taken a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you.
Of (BV)oaks from (BW)Bashan they have made your rudders;
With ivory they have [v]inlaid your deck of boxwood from the coastlands of (BX)Cyprus.
Your sail was of colorfully embroidered linen from Egypt
So that it became your flag;
Your [w]awning was (BY)violet and purple from the coastlands of (BZ)Elishah.
The inhabitants of Sidon and (CA)Arvad were your rowers;
Your (CB)wise men, Tyre, were [x]aboard; they were your sailors.
The elders of (CC)Gebal and her wise men were with you repairing your leaks;
All the ships of the sea and their sailors were with you in order to deal in your merchandise.

10 (CD)Persia, (CE)Lud, and (CF)Put were in your army, your men of war. They hung up shield and helmet on you; they presented your splendor. 11 The sons of Arvad and your army were on your walls, all around, and the [y]Gammadim were in your towers. They hung their shields on your walls all around; they perfected your beauty.

12 “Tarshish was your customer because of the abundance of all kinds of wealth; with silver, iron, tin, and lead they paid for your merchandise. 13 (CG)Javan, (CH)Tubal, and (CI)Meshech, they were your traders; with human (CJ)lives and vessels of bronze they paid for your merchandise. 14 Those from (CK)Beth-togarmah gave horses, war horses, and mules for your merchandise. 15 The sons of (CL)Dedan were your traders. Many coastlands were [z]your market; they brought (CM)ivory tusks and ebony as your payment. 16 (CN)Aram was your customer because of the abundance of your [aa]goods; they paid for your merchandise with [ab](CO)emeralds, purple, (CP)colorfully woven cloth, fine linen, coral, and rubies. 17 Judah and the land of Israel, they were your traders; with the wheat of (CQ)Minnith, [ac]cakes, honey, oil, and balsam they paid for your merchandise. 18 (CR)Damascus was your customer because of the abundance of your [ad]goods, because of the abundance of all kinds of wealth, because of the wine of Helbon and white wool. 19 Vedan and Javan paid for your merchandise from Uzal; wrought iron, cassia, and spice reed were among your merchandise. 20 (CS)Dedan traded with you in saddlecloths for riding. 21 (CT)Arabia and all the princes of Kedar, they were [ae]your customers for (CU)lambs, rams, and goats; for these they were your customers. 22 The traders of (CV)Sheba and Raamah, they traded with you; they paid for your merchandise with the best of all (CW)balsam oil, and with all kinds of precious stones, and gold. 23 Haran, Canneh, (CX)Eden, the traders of Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad traded with you. 24 They traded with you in choice garments, in clothes of violet and colorfully woven cloth, and in blankets of two colors, and tightly wound cords, which were among your merchandise. 25 The (CY)ships of Tarshish were [af]the carriers for your merchandise.

And you were filled and were very [ag]glorious
In the heart of the seas.

26 “Your rowers have brought you
Into (CZ)great waters;
The (DA)east wind has broken you
In the heart of the seas.
27 Your wealth, your wares, your merchandise,
Your seamen and your sailors,
Your repairers of leaks, your dealers in merchandise,
And all your men of war who are in you,
With all your contingent that is in your midst,
Will fall into the heart of the seas
On the day of your overthrow.
28 At the sound of the cry of your sailors,
The pasture lands will (DB)shake.
29 All who handle the oar,
The (DC)seamen and all the sailors of the sea
Will come down from their ships;
They will stand on the land,
30 And they will (DD)make their voice heard over you
And cry out bitterly.
They will (DE)throw dust on their heads,
They will (DF)wallow in ashes.
31 Also they will shave themselves (DG)bald for you
And (DH)put on sackcloth;
And they will (DI)weep for you in bitterness of soul
With bitter mourning.
32 Moreover, in their wailing they will take up a (DJ)song of mourning for you
And sing a song of mourning over you:
‘Who is like Tyre,
Like her who is silent in the midst of the sea?
33 When your merchandise went out from the seas,
You satisfied many peoples;
With the (DK)abundance of your wealth and your merchandise
You enriched the kings of the earth.
34 [ah]Now that you are (DL)broken by the seas
In the depths of the waters,
Your (DM)merchandise and all your company
Have fallen in the midst of you.
35 All the (DN)inhabitants of the coastlands
Are appalled at you,
And their kings are horribly afraid;
They [ai]have a troubled look.
36 The merchants among the peoples (DO)hiss at you;
You have become [aj]terrified
And you (DP)will cease to be forever.’”’”

Tyre’s King Overthrown

28 The word of the Lord came again to me, saying, “Son of man, say to the [ak]leader of Tyre, ‘The Lord [al]God says this:

“Because your heart is haughty
And you have said, ‘(DQ)I am a god,
I sit in the seat of [am]gods
In the heart of the seas’;
Yet you are a (DR)mortal and not God,
Although you make your heart like the heart of God—
Behold, you are wiser than (DS)Daniel;
There is no secret that is a match for you!
By your wisdom and understanding
You have acquired (DT)riches for yourself
And have acquired gold and silver for your treasuries.
By your great wisdom, by your (DU)trade
You have increased your riches,
And your (DV)heart is haughty because of your riches—

Therefore this is what the Lord God says:

‘Because you have (DW)made your heart
Like the heart of God,
Therefore, behold, I am going to bring (DX)strangers against you,
The (DY)most ruthless of the nations.
And they will draw their swords
Against the beauty of your wisdom
And profane your splendor.
They will bring you down to the pit,
And you will die the (DZ)death of those who are killed
In the heart of the seas.
Will you still say, “I am a god,”
In the presence of one who kills you,
Though you are a mortal and not God,
In the hands of those who wound you?
10 You will die the death of the (EA)uncircumcised
By the hand of strangers,
For I have spoken!’ declares the Lord God!”’”

11 Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 12 “Son of man, (EB)take up a song of mourning over the king of Tyre and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

“You [an]had the seal of [ao]perfection,
Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13 You were in (EC)Eden, the garden of God;
(ED)Every precious stone was your covering:
The (EE)ruby, the topaz and the diamond;
The beryl, the onyx and the jasper;
The lapis lazuli, the turquoise and the emerald;
And the gold, the workmanship of your [ap](EF)settings and [aq]sockets,
Was in you.
On the day that you were created
They were prepared.
14 You were the (EG)anointed cherub who [ar]covers,
And I placed you there.
You were on the holy (EH)mountain of God;
You walked in the midst of the (EI)stones of fire.
15 You were (EJ)blameless in your ways
From the day you were created
Until (EK)unrighteousness was found in you.
16 By the (EL)abundance of your trade
[as]You were internally (EM)filled with violence,
And you sinned;
Therefore I have cast you as profane
From the mountain of God.
And I have destroyed you, you [at]covering cherub,
From the midst of the stones of fire.
17 Your heart was haughty because of your (EN)beauty;
You (EO)corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor.
I threw you to the ground;
I put you before (EP)kings,
That they may see you.
18 By the multitude of your wrongdoings,
In the unrighteousness of your trade
You profaned your sanctuaries.
Therefore I have brought (EQ)fire from the midst of you;
It has consumed you,
And I have turned you to (ER)ashes on the earth
In the eyes of all who see you.
19 All who know you among the peoples
Are appalled at you;
You have become [au](ES)terrified
And you will cease to be (ET)forever.”’”

Judgment of Sidon

20 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 21 “Son of man, (EU)set your face toward (EV)Sidon, prophesy against her 22 and say, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

“Behold, I am against you, Sidon,
And I will appear in My glory in your midst.
Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I (EW)execute judgments against her,
And I will reveal Myself as holy in her.
23 For (EX)I will send a plague to her
And blood to her streets,
And the (EY)wounded will [av]fall in her midst
By the sword upon her on every side;
Then they will know that I am the Lord.

24 And there will no longer be for the house of Israel a (EZ)painful thorn or a hurtful thorn bush from any surrounding them who despised them; then they will know that I am the Lord God.”

Israel Regathered

25 ‘This is what the Lord God says: “When I (FA)gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and show Myself holy among them in the sight of the nations, then they will (FB)live on their land which I gave to My servant Jacob. 26 They will (FC)live on it securely; and they will (FD)build houses, plant vineyards, and live securely when I (FE)execute judgments upon all around them who despise them. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.”’”

A Prophecy Against Ammon

25 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, set your face against(A) the Ammonites(B) and prophesy against them.(C) Say to them, ‘Hear the word of the Sovereign Lord. This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you said “Aha!(D)” over my sanctuary when it was desecrated(E) and over the land of Israel when it was laid waste and over the people of Judah when they went into exile,(F) therefore I am going to give you to the people of the East(G) as a possession. They will set up their camps(H) and pitch their tents among you; they will eat your fruit and drink your milk.(I) I will turn Rabbah(J) into a pasture for camels and Ammon into a resting place for sheep.(K) Then you will know that I am the Lord. For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you have clapped your hands(L) and stamped your feet, rejoicing with all the malice of your heart against the land of Israel,(M) therefore I will stretch out my hand(N) against you and give you as plunder(O) to the nations. I will wipe you out from among the nations and exterminate you from the countries. I will destroy(P) you, and you will know that I am the Lord.(Q)’”

A Prophecy Against Moab

“This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘Because Moab(R) and Seir(S) said, “Look, Judah has become like all the other nations,” therefore I will expose the flank of Moab, beginning at its frontier towns—Beth Jeshimoth(T), Baal Meon(U) and Kiriathaim(V)—the glory of that land. 10 I will give Moab along with the Ammonites to the people of the East as a possession, so that the Ammonites will not be remembered(W) among the nations; 11 and I will inflict punishment on Moab. Then they will know that I am the Lord.’”(X)

A Prophecy Against Edom

12 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘Because Edom(Y) took revenge on Judah and became very guilty by doing so, 13 therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will stretch out my hand(Z) against Edom and kill both man and beast.(AA) I will lay it waste, and from Teman(AB) to Dedan(AC) they will fall by the sword.(AD) 14 I will take vengeance on Edom by the hand of my people Israel, and they will deal with Edom in accordance with my anger(AE) and my wrath; they will know my vengeance, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”(AF)

A Prophecy Against Philistia

15 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘Because the Philistines(AG) acted in vengeance and took revenge with malice(AH) in their hearts, and with ancient hostility sought to destroy Judah, 16 therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am about to stretch out my hand against the Philistines,(AI) and I will wipe out the Kerethites(AJ) and destroy those remaining along the coast.(AK) 17 I will carry out great vengeance(AL) on them and punish(AM) them in my wrath. Then they will know that I am the Lord,(AN) when I take vengeance on them.(AO)’”

A Prophecy Against Tyre

26 In the eleventh month of the twelfth[a] year, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me:(AP) “Son of man, because Tyre(AQ) has said of Jerusalem, ‘Aha!(AR) The gate to the nations is broken, and its doors have swung open to me; now that she lies in ruins I will prosper,’ therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Tyre, and I will bring many nations against you, like the sea(AS) casting up its waves. They will destroy(AT) the walls of Tyre(AU) and pull down her towers; I will scrape away her rubble and make her a bare rock. Out in the sea(AV) she will become a place to spread fishnets,(AW) for I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord. She will become plunder(AX) for the nations,(AY) and her settlements on the mainland will be ravaged by the sword. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

“For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: From the north I am going to bring against Tyre Nebuchadnezzar[b](AZ) king of Babylon, king of kings,(BA) with horses and chariots,(BB) with horsemen and a great army. He will ravage your settlements on the mainland with the sword; he will set up siege works(BC) against you, build a ramp(BD) up to your walls and raise his shields against you. He will direct the blows of his battering rams against your walls and demolish your towers with his weapons.(BE) 10 His horses will be so many that they will cover you with dust. Your walls will tremble at the noise of the warhorses, wagons and chariots(BF) when he enters your gates as men enter a city whose walls have been broken through. 11 The hooves(BG) of his horses will trample all your streets; he will kill your people with the sword, and your strong pillars(BH) will fall to the ground.(BI) 12 They will plunder your wealth and loot your merchandise; they will break down your walls and demolish your fine houses and throw your stones, timber and rubble into the sea.(BJ) 13 I will put an end(BK) to your noisy songs,(BL) and the music of your harps(BM) will be heard no more.(BN) 14 I will make you a bare rock, and you will become a place to spread fishnets. You will never be rebuilt,(BO) for I the Lord have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.

15 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says to Tyre: Will not the coastlands(BP) tremble(BQ) at the sound of your fall, when the wounded groan(BR) and the slaughter takes place in you? 16 Then all the princes of the coast will step down from their thrones and lay aside their robes and take off their embroidered(BS) garments. Clothed(BT) with terror, they will sit on the ground,(BU) trembling(BV) every moment, appalled(BW) at you. 17 Then they will take up a lament(BX) concerning you and say to you:

“‘How you are destroyed, city of renown,
    peopled by men of the sea!
You were a power on the seas,
    you and your citizens;
you put your terror
    on all who lived there.(BY)
18 Now the coastlands tremble(BZ)
    on the day of your fall;
the islands in the sea
    are terrified at your collapse.’(CA)

19 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When I make you a desolate city, like cities no longer inhabited, and when I bring the ocean depths(CB) over you and its vast waters cover you,(CC) 20 then I will bring you down with those who go down to the pit,(CD) to the people of long ago. I will make you dwell in the earth below, as in ancient ruins, with those who go down to the pit, and you will not return or take your place[c] in the land of the living.(CE) 21 I will bring you to a horrible end and you will be no more.(CF) You will be sought, but you will never again be found, declares the Sovereign Lord.”(CG)

A Lament Over Tyre

27 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, take up a lament(CH) concerning Tyre. Say to Tyre,(CI) situated at the gateway to the sea,(CJ) merchant of peoples on many coasts, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘You say, Tyre,
    “I am perfect in beauty.(CK)
Your domain was on the high seas;
    your builders brought your beauty to perfection.(CL)
They made all your timbers
    of juniper from Senir[d];(CM)
they took a cedar from Lebanon(CN)
    to make a mast for you.
Of oaks(CO) from Bashan
    they made your oars;
of cypress wood[e] from the coasts of Cyprus(CP)
    they made your deck, adorned with ivory.
Fine embroidered linen(CQ) from Egypt was your sail
    and served as your banner;
your awnings were of blue and purple(CR)
    from the coasts of Elishah.(CS)
Men of Sidon and Arvad(CT) were your oarsmen;
    your skilled men, Tyre, were aboard as your sailors.(CU)
Veteran craftsmen of Byblos(CV) were on board
    as shipwrights to caulk your seams.
All the ships of the sea(CW) and their sailors
    came alongside to trade for your wares.

10 “‘Men of Persia,(CX) Lydia(CY) and Put(CZ)
    served as soldiers in your army.
They hung their shields(DA) and helmets on your walls,
    bringing you splendor.
11 Men of Arvad and Helek
    guarded your walls on every side;
men of Gammad
    were in your towers.
They hung their shields around your walls;
    they brought your beauty to perfection.(DB)

12 “‘Tarshish(DC) did business with you because of your great wealth of goods;(DD) they exchanged silver, iron, tin and lead for your merchandise.

13 “‘Greece,(DE) Tubal and Meshek(DF) did business with you; they traded human beings(DG) and articles of bronze for your wares.

14 “‘Men of Beth Togarmah(DH) exchanged chariot horses, cavalry horses and mules for your merchandise.

15 “‘The men of Rhodes[f](DI) traded with you, and many coastlands(DJ) were your customers; they paid you with ivory(DK) tusks and ebony.

16 “‘Aram[g](DL) did business with you because of your many products; they exchanged turquoise,(DM) purple fabric, embroidered work, fine linen,(DN) coral(DO) and rubies for your merchandise.

17 “‘Judah and Israel traded with you; they exchanged wheat(DP) from Minnith(DQ) and confections,[h] honey, olive oil and balm(DR) for your wares.(DS)

18 “‘Damascus(DT) did business with you because of your many products and great wealth of goods.(DU) They offered wine from Helbon, wool from Zahar 19 and casks of wine from Izal(DV) in exchange for your wares: wrought iron, cassia(DW) and calamus.

20 “‘Dedan(DX) traded in saddle blankets with you.

21 “‘Arabia(DY) and all the princes of Kedar(DZ) were your customers; they did business with you in lambs, rams and goats.

22 “‘The merchants of Sheba(EA) and Raamah traded with you; for your merchandise they exchanged the finest of all kinds of spices(EB) and precious stones, and gold.(EC)

23 “‘Harran,(ED) Kanneh and Eden(EE) and merchants of Sheba, Ashur(EF) and Kilmad traded with you. 24 In your marketplace they traded with you beautiful garments, blue fabric, embroidered work and multicolored rugs with cords twisted and tightly knotted.

25 “‘The ships of Tarshish(EG) serve
    as carriers for your wares.
You are filled with heavy cargo
    as you sail the sea.(EH)
26 Your oarsmen take you
    out to the high seas.
But the east wind(EI) will break you to pieces
    far out at sea.
27 Your wealth,(EJ) merchandise and wares,
    your mariners, sailors and shipwrights,
your merchants and all your soldiers,
    and everyone else on board
will sink into the heart of the sea(EK)
    on the day of your shipwreck.
28 The shorelands will quake(EL)
    when your sailors cry out.
29 All who handle the oars
    will abandon their ships;
the mariners and all the sailors
    will stand on the shore.
30 They will raise their voice
    and cry bitterly over you;
they will sprinkle dust(EM) on their heads
    and roll(EN) in ashes.(EO)
31 They will shave their heads(EP) because of you
    and will put on sackcloth.
They will weep(EQ) over you with anguish of soul
    and with bitter mourning.(ER)
32 As they wail and mourn over you,
    they will take up a lament(ES) concerning you:
“Who was ever silenced like Tyre,
    surrounded by the sea?(ET)
33 When your merchandise went out on the seas,(EU)
    you satisfied many nations;
with your great wealth(EV) and your wares
    you enriched the kings of the earth.
34 Now you are shattered by the sea
    in the depths of the waters;
your wares and all your company
    have gone down with you.(EW)
35 All who live in the coastlands(EX)
    are appalled(EY) at you;
their kings shudder with horror
    and their faces are distorted with fear.(EZ)
36 The merchants among the nations scoff at you;(FA)
    you have come to a horrible end
    and will be no more.(FB)’”

A Prophecy Against the King of Tyre

28 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man(FC), say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘In the pride of your heart
    you say, “I am a god;
I sit on the throne(FD) of a god
    in the heart of the seas.”(FE)
But you are a mere mortal and not a god,
    though you think you are as wise as a god.(FF)
Are you wiser than Daniel[i]?(FG)
    Is no secret hidden from you?
By your wisdom and understanding
    you have gained wealth for yourself
and amassed gold and silver
    in your treasuries.(FH)
By your great skill in trading(FI)
    you have increased your wealth,(FJ)
and because of your wealth
    your heart has grown proud.(FK)

“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘Because you think you are wise,
    as wise as a god,
I am going to bring foreigners against you,
    the most ruthless of nations;(FL)
they will draw their swords against your beauty and wisdom(FM)
    and pierce your shining splendor.(FN)
They will bring you down to the pit,(FO)
    and you will die a violent death(FP)
    in the heart of the seas.(FQ)
Will you then say, “I am a god,”
    in the presence of those who kill you?
You will be but a mortal, not a god,(FR)
    in the hands of those who slay you.(FS)
10 You will die the death of the uncircumcised(FT)
    at the hands of foreigners.

I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”

11 The word of the Lord came to me: 12 “Son of man, take up a lament(FU) concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘You were the seal of perfection,
    full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.(FV)
13 You were in Eden,(FW)
    the garden of God;(FX)
every precious stone(FY) adorned you:
    carnelian, chrysolite and emerald,
    topaz, onyx and jasper,
    lapis lazuli, turquoise(FZ) and beryl.[j]
Your settings and mountings[k] were made of gold;
    on the day you were created they were prepared.(GA)
14 You were anointed(GB) as a guardian cherub,(GC)
    for so I ordained you.
You were on the holy mount of God;
    you walked among the fiery stones.
15 You were blameless in your ways
    from the day you were created
    till wickedness was found in you.
16 Through your widespread trade
    you were filled with violence,(GD)
    and you sinned.
So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God,
    and I expelled you, guardian cherub,(GE)
    from among the fiery stones.
17 Your heart became proud(GF)
    on account of your beauty,
and you corrupted your wisdom
    because of your splendor.
So I threw you to the earth;
    I made a spectacle of you before kings.(GG)
18 By your many sins and dishonest trade
    you have desecrated your sanctuaries.
So I made a fire(GH) come out from you,
    and it consumed you,
and I reduced you to ashes(GI) on the ground
    in the sight of all who were watching.(GJ)
19 All the nations who knew you
    are appalled(GK) at you;
you have come to a horrible end
    and will be no more.(GL)’”

A Prophecy Against Sidon

20 The word of the Lord came to me: 21 “Son of man, set your face against(GM) Sidon;(GN) prophesy against her 22 and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘I am against you, Sidon,
    and among you I will display my glory.(GO)
You will know that I am the Lord,
    when I inflict punishment(GP) on you
    and within you am proved to be holy.(GQ)
23 I will send a plague upon you
    and make blood flow in your streets.
The slain will fall within you,
    with the sword against you on every side.
Then you will know that I am the Lord.(GR)

24 “‘No longer will the people of Israel have malicious neighbors who are painful briers and sharp thorns.(GS) Then they will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.

25 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When I gather(GT) the people of Israel from the nations where they have been scattered,(GU) I will be proved holy(GV) through them in the sight of the nations. Then they will live in their own land, which I gave to my servant Jacob.(GW) 26 They will live there in safety(GX) and will build houses and plant(GY) vineyards; they will live in safety when I inflict punishment(GZ) on all their neighbors who maligned them. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.(HA)’”
