God gives Ezekiel visions
1 It was the 30th year.[a] God spoke to me on the fifth day of the fourth month.[b] I was among the prisoners from Judah at the side of the Kebar river.[c] At that time the skies opened and I saw visions from God.
2 King Jehoiachin of Judah had been a prisoner in Babylon for five years. On the fifth day of the month, 3 the Lord spoke to Ezekiel, the priest.[d] He was the son of Buzi. He was standing beside the River Kebar in Babylon. While Ezekiel was there, the Lord came to him with power.

- 1:1 This probably means that Ezekiel was 30 years old.
- 1:1 The 4th month would be what we call June or July.
- 1:1 King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had taken Israelite people from Jerusalem as prisoners. The Kebar river joined the Euphrates river at Babylon. It was big enough for large boats.
- 1:3 When we write Lord like this, it is a special name for God. Sometimes people write it as ‘Yahweh’, or as ‘Jehovah’. It is his own name that he told Moses. See Exodus 3:14. It means ‘I am who I am’. This shows that God has always been there and he always will be there.
