30 And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.

And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel: and he said, Am I in God's stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?

And she said, Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her.

And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid to wife: and Jacob went in unto her.

And Bilhah conceived, and bare Jacob a son.

And Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son: therefore called she his name Dan.

And Bilhah Rachel's maid conceived again, and bare Jacob a second son.

And Rachel said, With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called his name Naphtali.

When Leah saw that she had left bearing, she took Zilpah her maid, and gave her Jacob to wife.

10 And Zilpah Leah's maid bare Jacob a son.

11 And Leah said, A troop cometh: and she called his name Gad.

12 And Zilpah Leah's maid bare Jacob a second son.

13 And Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed: and she called his name Asher.

14 And Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them unto his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, Give me, I pray thee, of thy son's mandrakes.

15 And she said unto her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son's mandrakes also? And Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee to night for thy son's mandrakes.

16 And Jacob came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, Thou must come in unto me; for surely I have hired thee with my son's mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.

17 And God hearkened unto Leah, and she conceived, and bare Jacob the fifth son.

18 And Leah said, God hath given me my hire, because I have given my maiden to my husband: and she called his name Issachar.

19 And Leah conceived again, and bare Jacob the sixth son.

20 And Leah said, God hath endued me with a good dowry; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have born him six sons: and she called his name Zebulun.

21 And afterwards she bare a daughter, and called her name Dinah.

22 And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb.

23 And she conceived, and bare a son; and said, God hath taken away my reproach:

24 And she called his name Joseph; and said, The Lord shall add to me another son.

25 And it came to pass, when Rachel had born Joseph, that Jacob said unto Laban, Send me away, that I may go unto mine own place, and to my country.

26 Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and let me go: for thou knowest my service which I have done thee.

27 And Laban said unto him, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes, tarry: for I have learned by experience that the Lord hath blessed me for thy sake.

28 And he said, Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it.

29 And he said unto him, Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle was with me.

30 For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased unto a multitude; and the Lord hath blessed thee since my coming: and now when shall I provide for mine own house also?

31 And he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me any thing: if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock.

32 I will pass through all thy flock to day, removing from thence all the speckled and spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats: and of such shall be my hire.

33 So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my hire before thy face: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be counted stolen with me.

34 And Laban said, Behold, I would it might be according to thy word.

35 And he removed that day the he goats that were ringstraked and spotted, and all the she goats that were speckled and spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.

36 And he set three days' journey betwixt himself and Jacob: and Jacob fed the rest of Laban's flocks.

37 And Jacob took him rods of green poplar, and of the hazel and chesnut tree; and pilled white strakes in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods.

38 And he set the rods which he had pilled before the flocks in the gutters in the watering troughs when the flocks came to drink, that they should conceive when they came to drink.

39 And the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle ringstraked, speckled, and spotted.

40 And Jacob did separate the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the ringstraked, and all the brown in the flock of Laban; and he put his own flocks by themselves, and put them not unto Laban's cattle.

41 And it came to pass, whensoever the stronger cattle did conceive, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods.

42 But when the cattle were feeble, he put them not in: so the feebler were Laban's, and the stronger Jacob's.

43 And the man increased exceedingly, and had much cattle, and maidservants, and menservants, and camels, and asses.

31 And he heard the words of Laban's sons, saying, Jacob hath taken away all that was our father's; and of that which was our father's hath he gotten all this glory.

And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and, behold, it was not toward him as before.

And the Lord said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee.

And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field unto his flock,

And said unto them, I see your father's countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father hath been with me.

And ye know that with all my power I have served your father.

And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.

If he said thus, The speckled shall be thy wages; then all the cattle bare speckled: and if he said thus, The ringstraked shall be thy hire; then bare all the cattle ringstraked.

Thus God hath taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me.

10 And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were ringstraked, speckled, and grisled.

11 And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, Here am I.

12 And he said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle are ringstraked, speckled, and grisled: for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto thee.

13 I am the God of Bethel, where thou anointedst the pillar, and where thou vowedst a vow unto me: now arise, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred.

14 And Rachel and Leah answered and said unto him, Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father's house?

15 Are we not counted of him strangers? for he hath sold us, and hath quite devoured also our money.

16 For all the riches which God hath taken from our father, that is ours, and our children's: now then, whatsoever God hath said unto thee, do.

17 Then Jacob rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon camels;

18 And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten, the cattle of his getting, which he had gotten in Padanaram, for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan.

19 And Laban went to shear his sheep: and Rachel had stolen the images that were her father's.

20 And Jacob stole away unawares to Laban the Syrian, in that he told him not that he fled.

21 So he fled with all that he had; and he rose up, and passed over the river, and set his face toward the mount Gilead.

22 And it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob was fled.

23 And he took his brethren with him, and pursued after him seven days' journey; and they overtook him in the mount Gilead.

24 And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.

25 Then Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mount: and Laban with his brethren pitched in the mount of Gilead.

26 And Laban said to Jacob, What hast thou done, that thou hast stolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters, as captives taken with the sword?

27 Wherefore didst thou flee away secretly, and steal away from me; and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp?

28 And hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters? thou hast now done foolishly in so doing.

29 It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt: but the God of your father spake unto me yesternight, saying, Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.

30 And now, though thou wouldest needs be gone, because thou sore longedst after thy father's house, yet wherefore hast thou stolen my gods?

31 And Jacob answered and said to Laban, Because I was afraid: for I said, Peradventure thou wouldest take by force thy daughters from me.

32 With whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him not live: before our brethren discern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee. For Jacob knew not that Rachel had stolen them.

33 And Laban went into Jacob's tent, and into Leah's tent, and into the two maidservants' tents; but he found them not. Then went he out of Leah's tent, and entered into Rachel's tent.

34 Now Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the camel's furniture, and sat upon them. And Laban searched all the tent, but found them not.

35 And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched but found not the images.

36 And Jacob was wroth, and chode with Laban: and Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my trespass? what is my sin, that thou hast so hotly pursued after me?

37 Whereas thou hast searched all my stuff, what hast thou found of all thy household stuff? set it here before my brethren and thy brethren, that they may judge betwixt us both.

38 This twenty years have I been with thee; thy ewes and thy she goats have not cast their young, and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten.

39 That which was torn of beasts I brought not unto thee; I bare the loss of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night.

40 Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from mine eyes.

41 Thus have I been twenty years in thy house; I served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy cattle: and thou hast changed my wages ten times.

42 Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely thou hadst sent me away now empty. God hath seen mine affliction and the labour of my hands, and rebuked thee yesternight.

43 And Laban answered and said unto Jacob, These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that thou seest is mine: and what can I do this day unto these my daughters, or unto their children which they have born?

44 Now therefore come thou, let us make a covenant, I and thou; and let it be for a witness between me and thee.

45 And Jacob took a stone, and set it up for a pillar.

46 And Jacob said unto his brethren, Gather stones; and they took stones, and made an heap: and they did eat there upon the heap.

47 And Laban called it Jegarsahadutha: but Jacob called it Galeed.

48 And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it called Galeed;

49 And Mizpah; for he said, The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.

50 If thou shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives beside my daughters, no man is with us; see, God is witness betwixt me and thee.

51 And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap, and behold this pillar, which I have cast betwixt me and thee:

52 This heap be witness, and this pillar be witness, that I will not pass over this heap to thee, and that thou shalt not pass over this heap and this pillar unto me, for harm.

53 The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us. And Jacob sware by the fear of his father Isaac.

54 Then Jacob offered sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread: and they did eat bread, and tarried all night in the mount.

55 And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, and returned unto his place.

32 And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.

And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:

And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.

And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.

Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;

And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.

And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the Lord which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:

10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.

11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.

12 And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

13 And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;

14 Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,

15 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.

16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.

17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?

18 Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.

19 And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.

20 And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.

21 So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.

22 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.

23 And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.

24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.

25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.

26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.

27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.

28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.

30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.

31 And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.

32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.

33 And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids.

And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost.

And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.

And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, Who are those with thee? And he said, The children which God hath graciously given thy servant.

Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.

And Leah also with her children came near, and bowed themselves: and after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves.

And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.

And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep that thou hast unto thyself.

10 And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.

11 Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it.

12 And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee.

13 And he said unto him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die.

14 Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure, until I come unto my lord unto Seir.

15 And Esau said, Let me now leave with thee some of the folk that are with me. And he said, What needeth it? let me find grace in the sight of my lord.

16 So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir.

17 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him an house, and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.

18 And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padanaram; and pitched his tent before the city.

19 And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for an hundred pieces of money.

20 And he erected there an altar, and called it EleloheIsrael.

34 And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.

And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.

And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.

And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.

And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.

And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter: which thing ought not to be done.

And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife.

And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.

10 And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein.

11 And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.

12 Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give me the damsel to wife.

13 And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:

14 And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us:

15 But in this will we consent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised;

16 Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.

17 But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.

18 And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor's son.

19 And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was more honourable than all the house of his father.

20 And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying,

21 These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.

22 Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.

23 Shall not their cattle and their substance and every beast of their's be our's? only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.

24 And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.

25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.

26 And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went out.

27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.

28 They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field,

29 And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house.

30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.

31 And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?

35 And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother.

Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments:

And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.

And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.

And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.

So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel, he and all the people that were with him.

And he built there an altar, and called the place Elbethel: because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother.

But Deborah, Rebekah's nurse died, and she was buried beneath Bethel under an oak: and the name of it was called Allonbachuth.

And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padanaram, and blessed him.

10 And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.

11 And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;

12 And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.

13 And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him.

14 And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon.

15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Bethel.

16 And they journeyed from Bethel; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour.

17 And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also.

18 And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.

19 And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.

20 And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel's grave unto this day.

21 And Israel journeyed, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar.

22 And it came to pass, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine: and Israel heard it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:

23 The sons of Leah; Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun:

24 The sons of Rachel; Joseph, and Benjamin:

25 And the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid; Dan, and Naphtali:

26 And the sons of Zilpah, Leah's handmaid: Gad, and Asher: these are the sons of Jacob, which were born to him in Padanaram.

27 And Jacob came unto Isaac his father unto Mamre, unto the city of Arbah, which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.

28 And the days of Isaac were an hundred and fourscore years.

29 And Isaac gave up the ghost, and died, and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

36 Now these are the generations of Esau, who is Edom.

Esau took his wives of the daughters of Canaan; Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite;

And Bashemath Ishmael's daughter, sister of Nebajoth.

And Adah bare to Esau Eliphaz; and Bashemath bare Reuel;

And Aholibamah bare Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah: these are the sons of Esau, which were born unto him in the land of Canaan.

And Esau took his wives, and his sons, and his daughters, and all the persons of his house, and his cattle, and all his beasts, and all his substance, which he had got in the land of Canaan; and went into the country from the face of his brother Jacob.

For their riches were more than that they might dwell together; and the land wherein they were strangers could not bear them because of their cattle.

Thus dwelt Esau in mount Seir: Esau is Edom.

And these are the generations of Esau the father of the Edomites in mount Seir:

10 These are the names of Esau's sons; Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Bashemath the wife of Esau.

11 And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenaz.

12 And Timna was concubine to Eliphaz Esau's son; and she bare to Eliphaz Amalek: these were the sons of Adah Esau's wife.

13 And these are the sons of Reuel; Nahath, and Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah: these were the sons of Bashemath Esau's wife.

14 And these were the sons of Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon, Esau's wife: and she bare to Esau Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah.

15 These were dukes of the sons of Esau: the sons of Eliphaz the firstborn son of Esau; duke Teman, duke Omar, duke Zepho, duke Kenaz,

16 Duke Korah, duke Gatam, and duke Amalek: these are the dukes that came of Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these were the sons of Adah.

17 And these are the sons of Reuel Esau's son; duke Nahath, duke Zerah, duke Shammah, duke Mizzah: these are the dukes that came of Reuel in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Bashemath Esau's wife.

18 And these are the sons of Aholibamah Esau's wife; duke Jeush, duke Jaalam, duke Korah: these were the dukes that came of Aholibamah the daughter of Anah, Esau's wife.

24 And these are the children of Zibeon; both Ajah, and Anah: this was that Anah that found the mules in the wilderness, as he fed the asses of Zibeon his father.

25 And the children of Anah were these; Dishon, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah.

26 And these are the children of Dishon; Hemdan, and Eshban, and Ithran, and Cheran.

30 Duke Dishon, duke Ezer, duke Dishan: these are the dukes that came of Hori, among their dukes in the land of Seir.

31 And these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom, before there reigned any king over the children of Israel.

32 And Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom: and the name of his city was Dinhabah.

33 And Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his stead.

34 And Jobab died, and Husham of the land of Temani reigned in his stead.

35 And Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who smote Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Avith.

37 And Samlah died, and Saul of Rehoboth by the river reigned in his stead.

38 And Saul died, and Baalhanan the son of Achbor reigned in his stead.

39 And Baalhanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadar reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Pau; and his wife's name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab.

40 And these are the names of the dukes that came of Esau, according to their families, after their places, by their names; duke Timnah, duke Alvah, duke Jetheth,

41 Duke Aholibamah, duke Elah, duke Pinon,

42 Duke Kenaz, duke Teman, duke Mibzar,

43 Duke Magdiel, duke Iram: these be the dukes of Edom, according to their habitations in the land of their possession: he is Esau the father of the Edomites.

37 And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.

These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.

And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.

And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.

And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:

For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.

And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.

And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.

10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

11 And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.

12 And his brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.

13 And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.

14 And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

15 And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?

16 And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks.

17 And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.

18 And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.

19 And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.

20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

21 And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.

22 And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.

23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;

24 And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.

25 And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.

26 And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?

27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.

28 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.

29 And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.

30 And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go?

31 And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;

32 And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son's coat or no.

33 And he knew it, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.

34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.

35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.

36 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, and captain of the guard.

38 And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.

And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.

And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.

And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.

And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.

And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord slew him.

And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.

10 And the thing which he did displeased the Lord: wherefore he slew him also.

11 Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father's house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.

12 And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah's wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

13 And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.

14 And she put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.

15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.

16 And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?

17 And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?

18 And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.

19 And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

20 And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand: but he found her not.

21 Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.

22 And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.

23 And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.

24 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.

25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.

26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.

27 And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.

28 And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.

29 And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.

30 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.

39 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.

And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.

And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.

And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.

And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.

But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;

There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

10 And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.

11 And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.

12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.

13 And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,

14 That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:

15 And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out.

16 And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home.

17 And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me:

18 And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out.

19 And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled.

20 And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.

21 But the Lord was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.

23 The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the Lord was with him, and that which he did, the Lord made it to prosper.

40 And it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt.

And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers.

And he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound.

And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them: and they continued a season in ward.

And they dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, which were bound in the prison.

And Joseph came in unto them in the morning, and looked upon them, and, behold, they were sad.

And he asked Pharaoh's officers that were with him in the ward of his lord's house, saying, Wherefore look ye so sadly to day?

And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you.

And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me;

10 And in the vine were three branches: and it was as though it budded, and her blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes:

11 And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand.

12 And Joseph said unto him, This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days:

13 Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler.

14 But think on me when it shall be well with thee, and shew kindness, I pray thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house:

15 For indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews: and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.

16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said unto Joseph, I also was in my dream, and, behold, I had three white baskets on my head:

17 And in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of bakemeats for Pharaoh; and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head.

18 And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation thereof: The three baskets are three days:

19 Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee.

20 And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, that he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.

21 And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand:

22 But he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them.

23 Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.

41 And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river.

And, behold, there came up out of the river seven well favoured kine and fatfleshed; and they fed in a meadow.

And, behold, seven other kine came up after them out of the river, ill favoured and leanfleshed; and stood by the other kine upon the brink of the river.

And the ill favoured and leanfleshed kine did eat up the seven well favoured and fat kine. So Pharaoh awoke.

And he slept and dreamed the second time: and, behold, seven ears of corn came up upon one stalk, rank and good.

And, behold, seven thin ears and blasted with the east wind sprung up after them.

And the seven thin ears devoured the seven rank and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream.

And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof: and Pharaoh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh.

Then spake the chief butler unto Pharaoh, saying, I do remember my faults this day:

10 Pharaoh was wroth with his servants, and put me in ward in the captain of the guard's house, both me and the chief baker:

11 And we dreamed a dream in one night, I and he; we dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream.

12 And there was there with us a young man, an Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according to his dream he did interpret.

13 And it came to pass, as he interpreted to us, so it was; me he restored unto mine office, and him he hanged.

14 Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh.

15 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it: and I have heard say of thee, that thou canst understand a dream to interpret it.

16 And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.

17 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, In my dream, behold, I stood upon the bank of the river:

18 And, behold, there came up out of the river seven kine, fatfleshed and well favoured; and they fed in a meadow:

19 And, behold, seven other kine came up after them, poor and very ill favoured and leanfleshed, such as I never saw in all the land of Egypt for badness:

20 And the lean and the ill favoured kine did eat up the first seven fat kine:

21 And when they had eaten them up, it could not be known that they had eaten them; but they were still ill favoured, as at the beginning. So I awoke.

22 And I saw in my dream, and, behold, seven ears came up in one stalk, full and good:

23 And, behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them:

24 And the thin ears devoured the seven good ears: and I told this unto the magicians; but there was none that could declare it to me.

25 And Joseph said unto Pharaoh, The dream of Pharaoh is one: God hath shewed Pharaoh what he is about to do.

26 The seven good kine are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years: the dream is one.

27 And the seven thin and ill favoured kine that came up after them are seven years; and the seven empty ears blasted with the east wind shall be seven years of famine.

28 This is the thing which I have spoken unto Pharaoh: What God is about to do he sheweth unto Pharaoh.

29 Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt:

30 And there shall arise after them seven years of famine; and all the plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine shall consume the land;

31 And the plenty shall not be known in the land by reason of that famine following; for it shall be very grievous.

32 And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.

33 Now therefore let Pharaoh look out a man discreet and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt.

34 Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt in the seven plenteous years.

35 And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities.

36 And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the famine.

37 And the thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants.

38 And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?

39 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art:

40 Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou.

41 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.

42 And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck;

43 And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt.

44 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I am Pharaoh, and without thee shall no man lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.

45 And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphnathpaaneah; and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On. And Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt.

46 And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.

47 And in the seven plenteous years the earth brought forth by handfuls.

48 And he gathered up all the food of the seven years, which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field, which was round about every city, laid he up in the same.

49 And Joseph gathered corn as the sand of the sea, very much, until he left numbering; for it was without number.

50 And unto Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On bare unto him.

51 And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: For God, said he, hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house.

52 And the name of the second called he Ephraim: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.

53 And the seven years of plenteousness, that was in the land of Egypt, were ended.

54 And the seven years of dearth began to come, according as Joseph had said: and the dearth was in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.

55 And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread: and Pharaoh said unto all the Egyptians, Go unto Joseph; what he saith to you, do.

56 And the famine was over all the face of the earth: and Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians; and the famine waxed sore in the land of Egypt.

57 And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to buy corn; because that the famine was so sore in all lands.

42 Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another?

And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die.

And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt.

But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure mischief befall him.

And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan.

And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph's brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.

And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.

And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him.

And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

10 And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come.

11 We are all one man's sons; we are true men, thy servants are no spies.

12 And he said unto them, Nay, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

13 And they said, Thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.

14 And Joseph said unto them, That is it that I spake unto you, saying, Ye are spies:

15 Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither.

16 Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be any truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies.

17 And he put them all together into ward three days.

18 And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God:

19 If ye be true men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses:

20 But bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so.

21 And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.

22 And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required.

23 And they knew not that Joseph understood them; for he spake unto them by an interpreter.

24 And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes.

25 Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way: and thus did he unto them.

26 And they laded their asses with the corn, and departed thence.

27 And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the inn, he espied his money; for, behold, it was in his sack's mouth.

28 And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my sack: and their heart failed them, and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this that God hath done unto us?

29 And they came unto Jacob their father unto the land of Canaan, and told him all that befell unto them; saying,

30 The man, who is the lord of the land, spake roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country.

31 And we said unto him, We are true men; we are no spies:

32 We be twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.

33 And the man, the lord of the country, said unto us, Hereby shall I know that ye are true men; leave one of your brethren here with me, and take food for the famine of your households, and be gone:

34 And bring your youngest brother unto me: then shall I know that ye are no spies, but that ye are true men: so will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall traffick in the land.

35 And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack: and when both they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid.

36 And Jacob their father said unto them, Me have ye bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away: all these things are against me.

37 And Reuben spake unto his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again.

38 And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.

43 And the famine was sore in the land.

And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food.

And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.

If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food:

But if thou wilt not send him, we will not go down: for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.

And Israel said, Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?

And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?

And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones.

I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever:

10 For except we had lingered, surely now we had returned this second time.

11 And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds:

12 And take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your hand; peradventure it was an oversight:

13 Take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man:

14 And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.

15 And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand and Benjamin; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.

16 And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the ruler of his house, Bring these men home, and slay, and make ready; for these men shall dine with me at noon.

17 And the man did as Joseph bade; and the man brought the men into Joseph's house.

18 And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph's house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our asses.

19 And they came near to the steward of Joseph's house, and they communed with him at the door of the house,

20 And said, O sir, we came indeed down at the first time to buy food:

21 And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it again in our hand.

22 And other money have we brought down in our hands to buy food: we cannot tell who put our money in our sacks.

23 And he said, Peace be to you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought Simeon out unto them.

24 And the man brought the men into Joseph's house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses provender.

25 And they made ready the present against Joseph came at noon: for they heard that they should eat bread there.

26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth.

27 And he asked them of their welfare, and said, Is your father well, the old man of whom ye spake? Is he yet alive?

28 And they answered, Thy servant our father is in good health, he is yet alive. And they bowed down their heads, and made obeisance.

29 And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son.

30 And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother: and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there.

31 And he washed his face, and went out, and refrained himself, and said, Set on bread.

32 And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians.

33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men marvelled one at another.

34 And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin's mess was five times so much as any of their's. And they drank, and were merry with him.

44 And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sack's mouth.

And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack's mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.

As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses.

And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?

Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.

And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words.

30 When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children,(A) she became jealous of her sister.(B) So she said to Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die!”

Jacob became angry with her and said, “Am I in the place of God,(C) who has kept you from having children?”(D)

Then she said, “Here is Bilhah,(E) my servant.(F) Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me and I too can build a family through her.”(G)

So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife.(H) Jacob slept with her,(I) and she became pregnant and bore him a son. Then Rachel said, “God has vindicated me;(J) he has listened to my plea and given me a son.”(K) Because of this she named him Dan.[a](L)

Rachel’s servant Bilhah(M) conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. Then Rachel said, “I have had a great struggle with my sister, and I have won.”(N) So she named him Naphtali.[b](O)

When Leah(P) saw that she had stopped having children,(Q) she took her servant Zilpah(R) and gave her to Jacob as a wife.(S) 10 Leah’s servant Zilpah(T) bore Jacob a son. 11 Then Leah said, “What good fortune!”[c] So she named him Gad.[d](U)

12 Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. 13 Then Leah said, “How happy I am! The women will call me(V) happy.”(W) So she named him Asher.[e](X)

14 During wheat harvest,(Y) Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrake plants,(Z) which he brought to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”

15 But she said to her, “Wasn’t it enough(AA) that you took away my husband? Will you take my son’s mandrakes too?”

“Very well,” Rachel said, “he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son’s mandrakes.”(AB)

16 So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him. “You must sleep with me,” she said. “I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.”(AC) So he slept with her that night.

17 God listened to Leah,(AD) and she became pregnant and bore Jacob a fifth son. 18 Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my servant to my husband.”(AE) So she named him Issachar.[f](AF)

19 Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son. 20 Then Leah said, “God has presented me with a precious gift. This time my husband will treat me with honor,(AG) because I have borne him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.[g](AH)

21 Some time later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.(AI)

22 Then God remembered Rachel;(AJ) he listened to her(AK) and enabled her to conceive.(AL) 23 She became pregnant and gave birth to a son(AM) and said, “God has taken away my disgrace.”(AN) 24 She named him Joseph,[h](AO) and said, “May the Lord add to me another son.”(AP)

Jacob’s Flocks Increase

25 After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me on my way(AQ) so I can go back to my own homeland.(AR) 26 Give me my wives and children, for whom I have served you,(AS) and I will be on my way. You know how much work I’ve done for you.”

27 But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(AT) please stay. I have learned by divination(AU) that the Lord has blessed me because of you.”(AV) 28 He added, “Name your wages,(AW) and I will pay them.”

29 Jacob said to him, “You know how I have worked for you(AX) and how your livestock has fared under my care.(AY) 30 The little you had before I came has increased greatly, and the Lord has blessed you wherever I have been.(AZ) But now, when may I do something for my own household?(BA)

31 “What shall I give you?” he asked.

“Don’t give me anything,” Jacob replied. “But if you will do this one thing for me, I will go on tending your flocks and watching over them: 32 Let me go through all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb and every spotted or speckled goat.(BB) They will be my wages.(BC) 33 And my honesty will testify for me in the future, whenever you check on the wages you have paid me. Any goat in my possession that is not speckled or spotted, or any lamb that is not dark-colored,(BD) will be considered stolen.(BE)

34 “Agreed,” said Laban. “Let it be as you have said.” 35 That same day he removed all the male goats that were streaked or spotted, and all the speckled or spotted female goats (all that had white on them) and all the dark-colored lambs,(BF) and he placed them in the care of his sons.(BG) 36 Then he put a three-day journey(BH) between himself and Jacob, while Jacob continued to tend the rest of Laban’s flocks.

37 Jacob, however, took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond(BI) and plane trees(BJ) and made white stripes on them by peeling the bark and exposing the white inner wood of the branches.(BK) 38 Then he placed the peeled branches(BL) in all the watering troughs,(BM) so that they would be directly in front of the flocks when they came to drink. When the flocks were in heat(BN) and came to drink, 39 they mated in front of the branches.(BO) And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted.(BP) 40 Jacob set apart the young of the flock by themselves, but made the rest face the streaked and dark-colored animals(BQ) that belonged to Laban. Thus he made separate flocks for himself and did not put them with Laban’s animals. 41 Whenever the stronger females were in heat,(BR) Jacob would place the branches in the troughs in front of the animals so they would mate near the branches,(BS) 42 but if the animals were weak, he would not place them there. So the weak animals went to Laban and the strong ones to Jacob.(BT) 43 In this way the man grew exceedingly prosperous and came to own large flocks, and female and male servants, and camels and donkeys.(BU)

Jacob Flees From Laban

31 Jacob heard that Laban’s sons(BV) were saying, “Jacob has taken everything our father owned and has gained all this wealth from what belonged to our father.”(BW) And Jacob noticed that Laban’s attitude toward him was not what it had been.(BX)

Then the Lord said to Jacob, “Go back(BY) to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.”(BZ)

So Jacob sent word to Rachel and Leah to come out to the fields where his flocks were. He said to them, “I see that your father’s(CA) attitude toward me is not what it was before,(CB) but the God of my father has been with me.(CC) You know that I’ve worked for your father with all my strength,(CD) yet your father has cheated(CE) me by changing my wages(CF) ten times.(CG) However, God has not allowed him to harm me.(CH) If he said, ‘The speckled ones will be your wages,’ then all the flocks gave birth to speckled young; and if he said, ‘The streaked ones will be your wages,’(CI) then all the flocks bore streaked young. So God has taken away your father’s livestock(CJ) and has given them to me.(CK)

10 “In breeding season I once had a dream(CL) in which I looked up and saw that the male goats mating with the flock were streaked, speckled or spotted. 11 The angel of God(CM) said to me in the dream,(CN) ‘Jacob.’ I answered, ‘Here I am.’(CO) 12 And he said, ‘Look up and see that all the male goats mating with the flock are streaked, speckled or spotted,(CP) for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you.(CQ) 13 I am the God of Bethel,(CR) where you anointed a pillar(CS) and where you made a vow(CT) to me. Now leave this land at once and go back to your native land.(CU)’”

14 Then Rachel and Leah replied, “Do we still have any share(CV) in the inheritance of our father’s estate? 15 Does he not regard us as foreigners?(CW) Not only has he sold us, but he has used up what was paid for us.(CX) 16 Surely all the wealth that God took away from our father belongs to us and our children.(CY) So do whatever God has told you.”

17 Then Jacob put his children and his wives(CZ) on camels,(DA) 18 and he drove all his livestock ahead of him, along with all the goods he had accumulated(DB) in Paddan Aram,[i](DC) to go to his father Isaac(DD) in the land of Canaan.(DE)

19 When Laban had gone to shear his sheep,(DF) Rachel stole her father’s household gods.(DG) 20 Moreover, Jacob deceived(DH) Laban the Aramean(DI) by not telling him he was running away.(DJ) 21 So he fled(DK) with all he had, crossed the Euphrates River,(DL) and headed for the hill country of Gilead.(DM)

Laban Pursues Jacob

22 On the third day(DN) Laban was told that Jacob had fled.(DO) 23 Taking his relatives(DP) with him(DQ), he pursued Jacob for seven days and caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead.(DR) 24 Then God came to Laban the Aramean(DS) in a dream at night and said to him,(DT) “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.”(DU)

25 Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead(DV) when Laban overtook him, and Laban and his relatives camped there too. 26 Then Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done?(DW) You’ve deceived me,(DX) and you’ve carried off my daughters like captives in war.(DY) 27 Why did you run off secretly and deceive me? Why didn’t you tell me,(DZ) so I could send you away with joy and singing to the music of timbrels(EA) and harps?(EB) 28 You didn’t even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters goodbye.(EC) You have done a foolish thing. 29 I have the power to harm you;(ED) but last night the God of your father(EE) said to me, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’(EF) 30 Now you have gone off because you longed to return to your father’s household.(EG) But why did you steal(EH) my gods?(EI)

31 Jacob answered Laban, “I was afraid, because I thought you would take your daughters away from me by force.(EJ) 32 But if you find anyone who has your gods, that person shall not live.(EK) In the presence of our relatives, see for yourself whether there is anything of yours here with me; and if so, take it.” Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the gods.(EL)

33 So Laban went into Jacob’s tent and into Leah’s tent(EM) and into the tent of the two female servants,(EN) but he found nothing.(EO) After he came out of Leah’s tent, he entered Rachel’s tent. 34 Now Rachel had taken the household gods(EP) and put them inside her camel’s saddle(EQ) and was sitting on them. Laban searched(ER) through everything in the tent but found nothing.

35 Rachel said to her father, “Don’t be angry, my lord, that I cannot stand up in your presence;(ES) I’m having my period.(ET)” So he searched but could not find the household gods.(EU)

36 Jacob was angry and took Laban to task. “What is my crime?” he asked Laban. “How have I wronged(EV) you that you hunt me down?(EW) 37 Now that you have searched through all my goods, what have you found that belongs to your household?(EX) Put it here in front of your relatives(EY) and mine, and let them judge between the two of us.(EZ)

38 “I have been with you for twenty years now.(FA) Your sheep and goats have not miscarried,(FB) nor have I eaten rams from your flocks. 39 I did not bring you animals torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for whatever was stolen(FC) by day or night.(FD) 40 This was my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes.(FE) 41 It was like this for the twenty years(FF) I was in your household. I worked for you fourteen years for your two daughters(FG) and six years for your flocks,(FH) and you changed my wages(FI) ten times.(FJ) 42 If the God of my father,(FK) the God of Abraham(FL) and the Fear of Isaac,(FM) had not been with me,(FN) you would surely have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my hardship and the toil of my hands,(FO) and last night he rebuked you.(FP)

43 Laban answered Jacob, “The women are my daughters, the children are my children, and the flocks are my flocks.(FQ) All you see is mine. Yet what can I do today about these daughters of mine, or about the children they have borne? 44 Come now, let’s make a covenant,(FR) you and I, and let it serve as a witness between us.”(FS)

45 So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar.(FT) 46 He said to his relatives, “Gather some stones.” So they took stones and piled them in a heap,(FU) and they ate there by the heap. 47 Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, and Jacob called it Galeed.[j](FV)

48 Laban said, “This heap(FW) is a witness between you and me today.”(FX) That is why it was called Galeed. 49 It was also called Mizpah,[k](FY) because he said, “May the Lord keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other. 50 If you mistreat(FZ) my daughters or if you take any wives besides my daughters, even though no one is with us, remember that God is a witness(GA) between you and me.”(GB)

51 Laban also said to Jacob, “Here is this heap,(GC) and here is this pillar(GD) I have set up between you and me. 52 This heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness,(GE) that I will not go past this heap to your side to harm you and that you will not go past this heap(GF) and pillar to my side to harm me.(GG) 53 May the God of Abraham(GH) and the God of Nahor,(GI) the God of their father, judge between us.”(GJ)

So Jacob took an oath(GK) in the name of the Fear of his father Isaac.(GL) 54 He offered a sacrifice(GM) there in the hill country and invited his relatives to a meal.(GN) After they had eaten, they spent the night there.

55 Early the next morning Laban kissed his grandchildren and his daughters(GO) and blessed(GP) them. Then he left and returned home.[l](GQ)

Jacob Prepares to Meet Esau

32 [m]Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God(GR) met him. When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is the camp of God!”(GS) So he named that place Mahanaim.[n](GT)

Jacob sent messengers(GU) ahead of him to his brother Esau(GV) in the land of Seir,(GW) the country of Edom.(GX) He instructed them: “This is what you are to say to my lord(GY) Esau: ‘Your servant(GZ) Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban(HA) and have remained there till now. I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, male and female servants.(HB) Now I am sending this message to my lord,(HC) that I may find favor in your eyes.(HD)’”

When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”(HE)

In great fear(HF) and distress(HG) Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups,[o](HH) and the flocks and herds and camels as well. He thought, “If Esau comes and attacks one group,[p] the group[q] that is left may escape.”

Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my father Abraham,(HI) God of my father Isaac,(HJ) Lord, you who said to me, ‘Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’(HK) 10 I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness(HL) you have shown your servant. I had only my staff(HM) when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps.(HN) 11 Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid(HO) he will come and attack me,(HP) and also the mothers with their children.(HQ) 12 But you have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand(HR) of the sea, which cannot be counted.(HS)’”

13 He spent the night there, and from what he had with him he selected a gift(HT) for his brother Esau: 14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,(HU) 15 thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.(HV) 16 He put them in the care of his servants, each herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Go ahead of me, and keep some space between the herds.”(HW)

17 He instructed the one in the lead: “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘Who do you belong to, and where are you going, and who owns all these animals in front of you?’ 18 then you are to say, ‘They belong to your servant(HX) Jacob. They are a gift(HY) sent to my lord Esau, and he is coming behind us.’”

19 He also instructed the second, the third and all the others who followed the herds: “You are to say the same thing to Esau when you meet him. 20 And be sure to say, ‘Your servant(HZ) Jacob is coming behind us.’” For he thought, “I will pacify him with these gifts(IA) I am sending on ahead;(IB) later, when I see him, perhaps he will receive me.”(IC) 21 So Jacob’s gifts(ID) went on ahead of him, but he himself spent the night in the camp.

Jacob Wrestles With God

22 That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons(IE) and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.(IF) 23 After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions.(IG) 24 So Jacob was left alone,(IH) and a man(II) wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip(IJ) so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”

But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”(IK)

27 The man asked him, “What is your name?”

“Jacob,”(IL) he answered.

28 Then the man said, “Your name(IM) will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,[r](IN) because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”(IO)

29 Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”(IP)

But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?”(IQ) Then he blessed(IR) him there.

30 So Jacob called the place Peniel,[s] saying, “It is because I saw God face to face,(IS) and yet my life was spared.”

31 The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel,[t](IT) and he was limping because of his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip,(IU) because the socket of Jacob’s hip was touched near the tendon.

Jacob Meets Esau

33 Jacob looked up and there was Esau, coming with his four hundred men;(IV) so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel and the two female servants.(IW) He put the female servants and their children(IX) in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph(IY) in the rear. He himself went on ahead and bowed down to the ground(IZ) seven times(JA) as he approached his brother.

But Esau(JB) ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him.(JC) And they wept.(JD) Then Esau looked up and saw the women and children. “Who are these with you?” he asked.

Jacob answered, “They are the children God has graciously given your servant.(JE)

Then the female servants and their children(JF) approached and bowed down.(JG) Next, Leah and her children(JH) came and bowed down.(JI) Last of all came Joseph and Rachel,(JJ) and they too bowed down.

Esau asked, “What’s the meaning of all these flocks and herds I met?”(JK)

“To find favor in your eyes, my lord,”(JL) he said.

But Esau said, “I already have plenty,(JM) my brother. Keep what you have for yourself.”

10 “No, please!” said Jacob. “If I have found favor in your eyes,(JN) accept this gift(JO) from me. For to see your face is like seeing the face of God,(JP) now that you have received me favorably.(JQ) 11 Please accept the present(JR) that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me(JS) and I have all I need.”(JT) And because Jacob insisted,(JU) Esau accepted it.

12 Then Esau said, “Let us be on our way; I’ll accompany you.”

13 But Jacob said to him, “My lord(JV) knows that the children are tender and that I must care for the ewes and cows that are nursing their young.(JW) If they are driven hard just one day, all the animals will die. 14 So let my lord go on ahead of his servant, while I move along slowly at the pace of the flocks and herds(JX) before me and the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir.(JY)

15 Esau said, “Then let me leave some of my men with you.”

“But why do that?” Jacob asked. “Just let me find favor in the eyes of my lord.”(JZ)

16 So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir.(KA) 17 Jacob, however, went to Sukkoth,(KB) where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Sukkoth.[u]

18 After Jacob came from Paddan Aram,[v](KC) he arrived safely at the city of Shechem(KD) in Canaan and camped within sight of the city. 19 For a hundred pieces of silver,[w] he bought from the sons of Hamor,(KE) the father of Shechem,(KF) the plot of ground(KG) where he pitched his tent.(KH) 20 There he set up an altar(KI) and called it El Elohe Israel.[x]

Dinah and the Shechemites

34 Now Dinah,(KJ) the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land. When Shechem(KK) son of Hamor(KL) the Hivite,(KM) the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and raped her.(KN) His heart was drawn to Dinah(KO) daughter of Jacob;(KP) he loved(KQ) the young woman and spoke tenderly(KR) to her. And Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Get me this girl as my wife.”(KS)

When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled,(KT) his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he did nothing about it until they came home.

Then Shechem’s father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob.(KU) Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked(KV) and furious,(KW) because Shechem had done an outrageous thing in[y] Israel(KX) by sleeping with Jacob’s daughter—a thing that should not be done.(KY)

But Hamor said to them, “My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.(KZ) Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.(LA) 10 You can settle among us;(LB) the land is open to you.(LC) Live in it, trade[z] in it,(LD) and acquire property in it.(LE)

11 Then Shechem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes,(LF) and I will give you whatever you ask. 12 Make the price for the bride(LG) and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I’ll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the young woman as my wife.”

13 Because their sister Dinah had been defiled,(LH) Jacob’s sons replied deceitfully(LI) as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor. 14 They said to them, “We can’t do such a thing; we can’t give our sister to a man who is not circumcised.(LJ) That would be a disgrace to us. 15 We will enter into an agreement with you on one condition(LK) only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males.(LL) 16 Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves.(LM) We’ll settle among you and become one people with you.(LN) 17 But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we’ll take our sister and go.”

18 Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem. 19 The young man, who was the most honored(LO) of all his father’s family, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter.(LP) 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city(LQ) to speak to the men of their city. 21 “These men are friendly toward us,” they said. “Let them live in our land and trade in it;(LR) the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours.(LS) 22 But the men will agree to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised,(LT) as they themselves are. 23 Won’t their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours?(LU) So let us agree to their terms, and they will settle among us.(LV)

24 All the men who went out of the city gate(LW) agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.

25 Three days later, while all of them were still in pain,(LX) two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon(LY) and Levi,(LZ) Dinah’s brothers, took their swords(MA) and attacked the unsuspecting city,(MB) killing every male.(MC) 26 They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword(MD) and took Dinah(ME) from Shechem’s house and left. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city(MF) where[aa] their sister had been defiled.(MG) 28 They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys(MH) and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields.(MI) 29 They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children,(MJ) taking as plunder(MK) everything in the houses.(ML)

30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble(MM) on me by making me obnoxious(MN) to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land.(MO) We are few in number,(MP) and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed.”

31 But they replied, “Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?(MQ)

Jacob Returns to Bethel

35 Then God said to Jacob, “Go up to Bethel(MR) and settle there, and build an altar(MS) there to God,(MT) who appeared to you(MU) when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.”(MV)

So Jacob said to his household(MW) and to all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods(MX) you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes.(MY) Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God,(MZ) who answered me in the day of my distress(NA) and who has been with me wherever I have gone.(NB) So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears,(NC) and Jacob buried them under the oak(ND) at Shechem.(NE) Then they set out, and the terror of God(NF) fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.(NG)

Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz(NH) (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.(NI) There he built an altar,(NJ) and he called the place El Bethel,[ab](NK) because it was there that God revealed himself to him(NL) when he was fleeing from his brother.(NM)

Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse,(NN) died and was buried under the oak(NO) outside Bethel.(NP) So it was named Allon Bakuth.[ac]

After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram,[ad](NQ) God appeared to him again and blessed him.(NR) 10 God said to him, “Your name is Jacob,[ae] but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel.[af](NS) So he named him Israel.

11 And God said to him, “I am God Almighty[ag];(NT) be fruitful and increase in number.(NU) A nation(NV) and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will be among your descendants.(NW) 12 The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you.(NX)(NY) 13 Then God went up from him(NZ) at the place where he had talked with him.

14 Jacob set up a stone pillar(OA) at the place where God had talked with him, and he poured out a drink offering(OB) on it; he also poured oil on it.(OC) 15 Jacob called the place where God had talked with him Bethel.[ah](OD)

The Deaths of Rachel and Isaac(OE)

16 Then they moved on from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath,(OF) Rachel(OG) began to give birth and had great difficulty. 17 And as she was having great difficulty in childbirth, the midwife(OH) said to her, “Don’t despair, for you have another son.”(OI) 18 As she breathed her last—for she was dying—she named her son Ben-Oni.[ai](OJ) But his father named him Benjamin.[aj](OK)

19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath(OL) (that is, Bethlehem(OM)). 20 Over her tomb Jacob set up a pillar, and to this day(ON) that pillar marks Rachel’s tomb.(OO)

21 Israel moved on again and pitched his tent beyond Migdal Eder.(OP) 22 While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in and slept with his father’s concubine(OQ) Bilhah,(OR) and Israel heard of it.

These were the sons of Jacob,(PD) who were born to him in Paddan Aram.(PE)

27 Jacob came home to his father Isaac(PF) in Mamre,(PG) near Kiriath Arba(PH) (that is, Hebron),(PI) where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.(PJ) 28 Isaac lived a hundred and eighty years.(PK) 29 Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people,(PL) old and full of years.(PM) And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.(PN)

Jacob’s Children

30 Now when Rachel saw that (A)she bore Jacob no children, Rachel (B)envied her sister, and said to Jacob, “Give me children, (C)or else I die!”

And Jacob’s anger was aroused against Rachel, and he said, (D)Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?”

So she said, “Here is (E)my maid Bilhah; go in to her, (F)and she will bear a child on my knees, (G)that I also may [a]have children by her.” Then she gave him Bilhah her maid (H)as wife, and Jacob went in to her. And Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son. Then Rachel said, “God has (I)judged my case; and He has also heard my voice and given me a son.” Therefore she called his name [b]Dan. And Rachel’s maid Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. Then Rachel said, “With [c]great wrestlings I have wrestled with my sister, and indeed I have prevailed.” So she called his name [d]Naphtali.

When Leah saw that she had stopped bearing, she took Zilpah her maid and (J)gave her to Jacob as wife. 10 And Leah’s maid Zilpah bore Jacob a son. 11 Then Leah said, [e]“A troop comes!” So she called his name [f]Gad. 12 And Leah’s maid Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. 13 Then Leah said, “I am happy, for the daughters (K)will call me blessed.” So she called his name [g]Asher.

14 Now Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, (L)“Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”

15 But she said to her, (M)Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my son’s mandrakes also?”

And Rachel said, “Therefore he will lie with you tonight for your son’s mandrakes.”

16 When Jacob came out of the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must come in to me, for I have surely hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” And he lay with her that night.

17 And God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son. 18 Leah said, “God has given me my wages, because I have given my maid to my husband.” So she called his name [h]Issachar. 19 Then Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son. 20 And Leah said, “God has endowed me with a good endowment; now my husband will dwell with me, because I have borne him six sons.” So she called his name [i]Zebulun. 21 Afterward she bore a (N)daughter, and called her name [j]Dinah.

22 Then God (O)remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and (P)opened her womb. 23 And she conceived and bore a son, and said, “God has taken away (Q)my reproach.” 24 So she called his name [k]Joseph, and said, (R)“The Lord shall add to me another son.”

Jacob’s Agreement with Laban

25 And it came to pass, when Rachel had borne Joseph, that Jacob said to Laban, (S)“Send me away, that I may go to (T)my own place and to my country. 26 Give me my wives and my children (U)for whom I have served you, and let me go; for you know my service which I have done for you.”

27 And Laban said to him, “Please stay, if I have found favor in your eyes, for (V)I have learned by experience that the Lord has blessed me for your sake.” 28 Then he said, (W)“Name me your wages, and I will give it.

29 So Jacob said to him, (X)“You know how I have served you and how your livestock has been with me. 30 For what you had before I came was little, and it has increased to a great amount; the Lord has blessed you [l]since my coming. And now, when shall I also (Y)provide for my own house?”

31 So he said, “What shall I give you?”

And Jacob said, “You shall not give me anything. If you will do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep your flocks: 32 Let me pass through all your flock today, removing from there all the speckled and spotted sheep, and all the brown ones among the lambs, and the spotted and speckled among the goats; and (Z)these shall be my wages. 33 So my (AA)righteousness will answer for me in time to come, when the subject of my wages comes before you: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the lambs, will be considered stolen, if it is with me.”

34 And Laban said, “Oh, that it were according to your word!” 35 So he removed that day the male goats that were (AB)speckled and spotted, all the female goats that were speckled and spotted, every one that had some white in it, and all the brown ones among the lambs, and gave them into the hand of his sons. 36 Then he put three days’ journey between himself and Jacob, and Jacob fed the rest of Laban’s flocks.

37 Now (AC)Jacob took for himself rods of green poplar and of the almond and chestnut trees, peeled white strips in them, and exposed the white which was in the rods. 38 And the rods which he had peeled, he set before the flocks in the gutters, in the watering troughs where the flocks came to drink, so that they should conceive when they came to drink. 39 So the flocks conceived before the rods, and the flocks brought forth streaked, speckled, and spotted. 40 Then Jacob separated the lambs, and made the flocks face toward the streaked and all the brown in the flock of Laban; but he put his own flocks by themselves and did not put them with Laban’s flock.

41 And it came to pass, whenever the stronger livestock conceived, that Jacob placed the rods before the eyes of the livestock in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods. 42 But when the flocks were feeble, he did not put them in; so the feebler were Laban’s and the stronger Jacob’s. 43 Thus the man (AD)became exceedingly prosperous, and (AE)had large flocks, female and male servants, and camels and donkeys.

Jacob Flees from Laban

31 Now Jacob heard the words of Laban’s sons, saying, “Jacob has taken away all that was our father’s, and from what was our father’s he has acquired all this (AF)wealth.” And Jacob saw the (AG)countenance of Laban, and indeed it was not (AH)favorable toward him as before. Then the Lord said to Jacob, (AI)“Return to the land of your fathers and to your family, and I will (AJ)be with you.”

So Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field, to his flock, and said to them, (AK)“I see your father’s [m]countenance, that it is not favorable toward me as before; but the God of my father (AL)has been with me. And (AM)you know that with all my might I have served your father. Yet your father has deceived me and (AN)changed my wages (AO)ten times, but God (AP)did not allow him to hurt me. If he said thus: (AQ)‘The speckled shall be your wages,’ then all the flocks bore speckled. And if he said thus: ‘The streaked shall be your wages,’ then all the flocks bore streaked. So God has (AR)taken away the livestock of your father and given them to me.

10 “And it happened, at the time when the flocks conceived, that I lifted my eyes and saw in a dream, and behold, the rams which leaped upon the flocks were streaked, speckled, and gray-spotted. 11 Then (AS)the Angel of God spoke to me in a dream, saying, ‘Jacob.’ And I said, ‘Here I am.’ 12 And He said, ‘Lift your eyes now and see, all the rams which leap on the flocks are streaked, speckled, and gray-spotted; for (AT)I have seen all that Laban is doing to you. 13 I am the God of Bethel, (AU)where you anointed the pillar and where you made a vow to Me. Now (AV)arise, get out of this land, and return to the land of your family.’ ”

14 Then Rachel and Leah answered and said to him, (AW)“Is there still any portion or inheritance for us in our father’s house? 15 Are we not considered strangers by him? For (AX)he has sold us, and also completely consumed our money. 16 For all these riches which God has taken from our father are really ours and our children’s; now then, whatever God has said to you, do it.”

17 Then Jacob rose and set his sons and his wives on camels. 18 And he carried away all his livestock and all his possessions which he had gained, his acquired livestock which he had gained in Padan Aram, to go to his father Isaac in the land of (AY)Canaan. 19 Now Laban had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel had stolen the (AZ)household[n] idols that were her father’s. 20 And Jacob stole away, unknown to Laban the Syrian, in that he did not tell him that he intended to flee. 21 So he fled with all that he had. He arose and crossed the river, and (BA)headed[o] toward the mountains of Gilead.

Laban Pursues Jacob

22 And Laban was told on the third day that Jacob had fled. 23 Then he took (BB)his brethren with him and pursued him for seven days’ journey, and he overtook him in the mountains of Gilead. 24 But God (BC)had come to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said to him, “Be careful that you (BD)speak to Jacob neither good nor bad.”

25 So Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mountains, and Laban with his brethren pitched in the mountains of Gilead.

26 And Laban said to Jacob: “What have you done, that you have stolen away unknown to me, and (BE)carried away my daughters like captives taken with the sword? 27 Why did you flee away secretly, and steal away from me, and not tell me; for I might have sent you away with joy and songs, with timbrel and harp? 28 And you did not allow me (BF)to kiss my sons and my daughters. Now (BG)you have done foolishly in so doing. 29 It is in my power to do you harm, but the (BH)God of your father spoke to me (BI)last night, saying, ‘Be careful that you speak to Jacob neither good nor bad.’ 30 And now you have surely gone because you greatly long for your father’s house, but why did you (BJ)steal my gods?”

31 Then Jacob answered and said to Laban, “Because I was (BK)afraid, for I said, ‘Perhaps you would take your daughters from me by force.’ 32 With whomever you find your gods, (BL)do not let him live. In the presence of our brethren, identify what I have of yours and take it with you.” For Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.

33 And Laban went into Jacob’s tent, into Leah’s tent, and into the two maids’ tents, but he did not find them. Then he went out of Leah’s tent and entered Rachel’s tent. 34 Now Rachel had taken the [p]household idols, put them in the camel’s saddle, and sat on them. And Laban [q]searched all about the tent but did not find them. 35 And she said to her father, “Let it not displease my lord that I cannot (BM)rise before you, for the manner of women is with me.” And he searched but did not find the [r]household idols.

36 Then Jacob was angry and rebuked Laban, and Jacob answered and said to Laban: “What is my [s]trespass? What is my sin, that you have so hotly pursued me? 37 Although you have searched all my things, what part of your household things have you found? Set it here before my brethren and your brethren, that they may judge between us both! 38 These twenty years I have been with you; your ewes and your female goats have not miscarried their young, and I have not eaten the rams of your flock. 39 (BN)That which was torn by beasts I did not bring to you; I bore the loss of it. (BO)You required it from my hand, whether stolen by day or stolen by night. 40 There I was! In the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night, and my sleep departed from my eyes. 41 Thus I have been in your house twenty years; I (BP)served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, and (BQ)you have changed my wages ten times. 42 (BR)Unless the God of my father, the God of Abraham and (BS)the Fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely now you would have sent me away empty-handed. (BT)God has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, and (BU)rebuked you last night.”

Laban’s Covenant with Jacob

43 And Laban answered and said to Jacob, “These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and this flock is my flock; all that you see is mine. But what can I do this day to these my daughters or to their children whom they have borne? 44 Now therefore, come, (BV)let us make a [t]covenant, (BW)you and I, and let it be a witness between you and me.”

45 So Jacob (BX)took a stone and set it up as a pillar. 46 Then Jacob said to his brethren, “Gather stones.” And they took stones and made a heap, and they ate there on the heap. 47 Laban called it [u]Jegar Sahadutha, but Jacob called it [v]Galeed. 48 And Laban said, (BY)“This heap is a witness between you and me this day.” Therefore its name was called Galeed, 49 also (BZ)Mizpah,[w] because he said, “May the Lord watch between you and me when we are absent one from another. 50 If you afflict my daughters, or if you take other wives besides my daughters, although no man is with us—see, God is witness between you and me!”

51 Then Laban said to Jacob, “Here is this heap and here is this pillar, which I have placed between you and me. 52 This heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness, that I will not pass beyond this heap to you, and you will not pass beyond this heap and this pillar to me, for harm. 53 The God of Abraham, the God of Nahor, and the God of their father (CA)judge between us.” And Jacob (CB)swore by (CC)the [x]Fear of his father Isaac. 54 Then Jacob offered a sacrifice on the mountain, and called his brethren to eat bread. And they ate bread and stayed all night on the mountain. 55 And early in the morning Laban arose, and (CD)kissed his sons and daughters and (CE)blessed them. Then Laban departed and (CF)returned to his place.

Esau Comes to Meet Jacob

32 So Jacob went on his way, and (CG)the angels of God met him. When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is God’s (CH)camp.” And he called the name of that place [y]Mahanaim.

Then Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother (CI)in the land of Seir, (CJ)the [z]country of Edom. And he commanded them, saying, (CK)“Speak thus to my lord Esau, ‘Thus your servant Jacob says: “I have dwelt with Laban and stayed there until now. (CL)I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that (CM)I may find favor in your sight.” ’ ”

Then the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau, and (CN)he also is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.” So Jacob was greatly afraid and (CO)distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two companies. And he said, “If Esau comes to the one company and [aa]attacks it, then the other company which is left will escape.”

(CP)Then Jacob said, (CQ)“O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the Lord (CR)who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your family, and I will deal well with you’: 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the (CS)mercies and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant; for I crossed over this Jordan with (CT)my staff, and now I have become two companies. 11 (CU)Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and [ab]attack me and (CV)the mother with the children. 12 For (CW)You said, ‘I will surely treat you well, and make your descendants as the (CX)sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’ ”

13 So he lodged there that same night, and took what [ac]came to his hand as (CY)a present for Esau his brother: 14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, 15 thirty milk camels with their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals. 16 Then he delivered them to the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put some distance between successive droves.” 17 And he commanded the first one, saying, “When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, saying, ‘To whom do you belong, and where are you going? Whose are these in front of you?’ 18 then you shall say, ‘They are your servant Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord Esau; and behold, he also is behind us.’ ” 19 So he commanded the second, the third, and all who followed the droves, saying, “In this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him; 20 and also say, ‘Behold, your servant Jacob is behind us.’ ” For he said, “I will (CZ)appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.” 21 So the present went on over before him, but he himself lodged that night in the camp.

Wrestling with God

22 And he arose that night and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven sons, (DA)and crossed over the ford of Jabbok. 23 He took them, sent them [ad]over the brook, and sent over what he had. 24 Then Jacob was left alone; and (DB)a Man wrestled with him until the [ae]breaking of day. 25 Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He [af]touched the socket of his hip; and (DC)the socket of Jacob’s hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him. 26 And (DD)He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.”

But he said, (DE)“I will not let You go unless You bless me!”

27 So He said to him, “What is your name?”

He said, “Jacob.”

28 And He said, (DF)“Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but [ag]Israel; for you have (DG)struggled with God and (DH)with men, and have prevailed.”

29 Then Jacob asked, saying, “Tell me Your name, I pray.”

And He said, (DI)“Why is it that you ask about My name?” And He (DJ)blessed him there.

30 So Jacob called the name of the place [ah]Peniel: “For (DK)I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” 31 Just as he crossed over [ai]Penuel the sun rose on him, and he limped on his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the children of Israel do not eat the muscle that shrank, which is on the hip socket, because He [aj]touched the socket of Jacob’s hip in the muscle that shrank.

Jacob and Esau Meet

33 Now Jacob lifted his eyes and looked, and there, (DL)Esau was coming, and with him were four hundred men. So he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two maidservants. And he put the maidservants and their children in front, Leah and her children behind, and Rachel and Joseph last. Then he crossed over before them and (DM)bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

(DN)But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, (DO)and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept. And he lifted his eyes and saw the women and children, and said, “Who are these with you?”

So he said, “The children (DP)whom God has graciously given your servant.” Then the maidservants came near, they and their children, and bowed down. And Leah also came near with her children, and they bowed down. Afterward Joseph and Rachel came near, and they bowed down.

Then Esau said, “What do you mean by (DQ)all this company which I met?”

And he said, “These are (DR)to find favor in the sight of my lord.”

But Esau said, “I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself.”

10 And Jacob said, “No, please, if I have now found favor in your sight, then receive my present from my hand, inasmuch as I (DS)have seen your face as though I had seen the face of God, and you were pleased with me. 11 Please, take (DT)my blessing that is brought to you, because God has dealt (DU)graciously with me, and because I have [ak]enough.” (DV)So he urged him, and he took it.

12 Then Esau said, “Let us take our journey; let us go, and I will go before you.”

13 But Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are weak, and the flocks and herds which are nursing are with me. And if the men should drive them hard one day, all the flock will die. 14 Please let my lord go on ahead before his servant. I will lead on slowly at a pace which the livestock that go before me, and the children, [al]are able to endure, until I come to my lord (DW)in Seir.”

15 And Esau said, “Now let me leave with you some of the people who are with me.”

But he said, “What need is there? (DX)Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.” 16 So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir. 17 And Jacob journeyed to (DY)Succoth, built himself a house, and made [am]booths for his livestock. Therefore the name of the place is called [an]Succoth.

Jacob Comes to Canaan

18 Then Jacob came [ao]safely to (DZ)the city of (EA)Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan Aram; and he pitched his tent before the city. 19 And (EB)he bought the parcel of [ap]land, where he had pitched his tent, from the children of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for one hundred pieces of money. 20 Then he erected an altar there and called it (EC)El[aq] Elohe Israel.

The Dinah Incident

34 Now (ED)Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he (EE)took her and lay with her, and violated her. His soul [ar]was strongly attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young woman and spoke [as]kindly to the young woman. So Shechem (EF)spoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this young woman as a wife.”

And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter. Now his sons were with his livestock in the field; so Jacob (EG)held[at] his peace until they came. Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him. And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved and very angry, because he (EH)had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter, (EI)a thing which ought not to be done. But Hamor spoke with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife. And make marriages with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to yourselves. 10 So you shall dwell with us, and the land shall be before you. Dwell and trade in it, and acquire possessions for yourselves in it.”

11 Then Shechem said to her father and her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will give. 12 Ask me ever so much (EJ)dowry[au] and gift, and I will give according to what you say to me; but give me the young woman as a wife.”

13 But the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father, and spoke (EK)deceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister. 14 And they said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is (EL)uncircumcised, for (EM)that would be a reproach to us. 15 But on this condition we will consent to you: If you will become as we are, if every male of you is circumcised, 16 then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to us; and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people. 17 But if you will not heed us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and be gone.”

18 And their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son. 19 So the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he delighted in Jacob’s daughter. He was (EN)more honorable than all the household of his father.

20 And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the (EO)gate of their city, and spoke with the men of their city, saying: 21 “These men are at peace with us. Therefore let them dwell in the land and trade in it. For indeed the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters to us as wives, and let us give them our daughters. 22 Only on this condition will the men consent to dwell with us, to be one people: if every male among us is circumcised as they are circumcised. 23 Will not their livestock, their property, and every animal of theirs be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.” 24 And all who went out of the gate of his city heeded Hamor and Shechem his son; every male was circumcised, all who (EP)went out of the gate of his city.

25 Now it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of the sons of Jacob, (EQ)Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword and came boldly upon the city and killed all the males. 26 And they (ER)killed Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem’s house, and went out. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because their sister had been defiled. 28 They took their sheep, their oxen, and their donkeys, what was in the city and what was in the field, 29 and all their wealth. All their little ones and their wives they took captive; and they plundered even all that was in the houses.

30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, (ES)“You have (ET)troubled me (EU)by making me obnoxious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; (EV)and since I am few in number, they will gather themselves together against me and kill me. I shall be destroyed, my household and I.”

31 But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a harlot?”

Jacob’s Return to Bethel

35 Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to (EW)Bethel and dwell there; and make an altar there to God, (EX)who appeared to you (EY)when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.”

And Jacob said to his (EZ)household and to all who were with him, “Put away (FA)the foreign gods that are among you, (FB)purify yourselves, and change your garments. Then let us arise and go up to Bethel; and I will make an altar there to God, (FC)who answered me in the day of my distress (FD)and has been with me in the way which I have gone.” So they gave Jacob all the foreign [av]gods which were in their hands, and the (FE)earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under (FF)the terebinth tree which was by Shechem.

And they journeyed, and (FG)the terror of God was upon the cities that were all around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. So Jacob came to (FH)Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him. And he (FI)built an altar there and called the place [aw]El Bethel, because (FJ)there God appeared to him when he fled from the face of his brother.

Now (FK)Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the terebinth tree. So the name of it was called [ax]Allon Bachuth.

Then (FL)God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Padan Aram, and (FM)blessed him. 10 And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; (FN)your name shall not be called Jacob anymore, (FO)but Israel shall be your name.” So He called his name Israel. 11 Also God said to him: (FP)“I am God Almighty. (FQ)Be fruitful and multiply; (FR)a nation and a company of nations shall proceed from you, and kings shall come from your body. 12 The (FS)land which I gave Abraham and Isaac I give to you; and to your descendants after you I give this land.” 13 Then God (FT)went[ay] up from him in the place where He talked with him. 14 So Jacob (FU)set up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it. 15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, (FV)Bethel.

Death of Rachel

16 Then they journeyed from Bethel. And when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel labored in childbirth, and she had hard labor. 17 Now it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, “Do not fear; (FW)you will have this son also.” 18 And so it was, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name [az]Ben-Oni; but his father called him [ba]Benjamin. 19 So (FX)Rachel died and was buried on the way to (FY)Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). 20 And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, which is the pillar of Rachel’s grave (FZ)to this day.

21 Then Israel journeyed and pitched his tent beyond (GA)the tower of Eder. 22 And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and (GB)lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine; and Israel heard about it.

Jacob’s Twelve Sons

Now the sons of Jacob were twelve: 23 the sons of Leah were (GC)Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, and Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun; 24 the sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin; 25 the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maidservant, were Dan and Naphtali; 26 and the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maidservant, were Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Padan Aram.

Death of Isaac

27 Then Jacob came to his father Isaac at (GD)Mamre, or (GE)Kirjath Arba[bb] (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had dwelt. 28 Now the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years. 29 So Isaac breathed his last and died, and (GF)was [bc]gathered to his people, being old and full of days. And (GG)his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

The Family of Esau(GH)

36 Now this is the genealogy of Esau, (GI)who is Edom. (GJ)Esau took his wives from the daughters of Canaan: Adah the daughter of Elon the (GK)Hittite; (GL)Aholibamah[bd] the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite; and (GM)Basemath, Ishmael’s daughter, sister of Nebajoth. Now (GN)Adah bore Eliphaz to Esau, and Basemath bore Reuel. And [be]Aholibamah bore Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah. These were the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan.

Then Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the persons of his household, his cattle and all his animals, and all his goods which he had gained in the land of Canaan, and went to a country away from the presence of his brother Jacob. (GO)For their possessions were too great for them to dwell together, and (GP)the land where they were strangers could not support them because of their livestock. So Esau dwelt in (GQ)Mount Seir. (GR)Esau is Edom.

And this is the genealogy of Esau the father of the Edomites in Mount Seir. 10 These were the names of Esau’s sons: (GS)Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, and Reuel the son of Basemath the wife of Esau. 11 And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, [bf]Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.

12 Now Timna was the concubine of Eliphaz, Esau’s son, and she bore (GT)Amalek to Eliphaz. These were the sons of Adah, Esau’s wife.

13 These were the sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These were the sons of Basemath, Esau’s wife.

14 These were the sons of [bg]Aholibamah, Esau’s wife, the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon. And she bore to Esau: Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah.

The Chiefs of Edom

15 These were the chiefs of the sons of Esau. The sons of Eliphaz, the firstborn son of Esau, were Chief Teman, Chief Omar, Chief Zepho, Chief Kenaz, 16 [bh]Chief Korah, Chief Gatam, and Chief Amalek. These were the chiefs of Eliphaz in the land of Edom. They were the sons of Adah.

17 These were the sons of Reuel, Esau’s son: Chief Nahath, Chief Zerah, Chief Shammah, and Chief Mizzah. These were the chiefs of Reuel in the land of Edom. These were the sons of Basemath, Esau’s wife.

18 And these were the sons of [bi]Aholibamah, Esau’s wife: Chief Jeush, Chief Jaalam, and Chief Korah. These were the chiefs who descended from Aholibamah, Esau’s wife, the daughter of Anah. 19 These were the sons of Esau, who is Edom, and these were their chiefs.

The Sons of Seir

20 (GU)These were the sons of Seir (GV)the Horite who inhabited the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, 21 Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These were the chiefs of the Horites, the sons of Seir, in the land of Edom.

22 And the sons of Lotan were Hori and [bj]Hemam. Lotan’s sister was Timna.

23 These were the sons of Shobal: [bk]Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, [bl]Shepho, and Onam.

24 These were the sons of Zibeon: both Ajah and Anah. This was the Anah who found the [bm]water in the wilderness as he pastured (GW)the donkeys of his father Zibeon. 25 These were the children of Anah: Dishon and [bn]Aholibamah the daughter of Anah.

26 These were the sons of [bo]Dishon: [bp]Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran. 27 These were the sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and [bq]Akan. 28 These were the sons of Dishan: (GX)Uz and Aran.

29 These were the chiefs of the Horites: Chief Lotan, Chief Shobal, Chief Zibeon, Chief Anah, 30 Chief Dishon, Chief Ezer, and Chief Dishan. These were the chiefs of the Horites, according to their chiefs in the land of Seir.

The Kings of Edom

31 (GY)Now these were the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the children of Israel: 32 Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom, and the name of his city was Dinhabah. 33 And when Bela died, Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place. 34 When Jobab died, Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his place. 35 And when Husham died, Hadad the son of Bedad, who attacked Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his place. And the name of his city was Avith. 36 When Hadad died, Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place. 37 And when Samlah died, Saul of (GZ)Rehoboth-by-the-River reigned in his place. 38 When Saul died, Baal-Hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his place. 39 And when Baal-Hanan the son of Achbor died, [br]Hadar reigned in his place; and the name of his city was [bs]Pau. His wife’s name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab.

The Chiefs of Esau

40 And these were the names of the chiefs of Esau, according to their families and their places, by their names: Chief Timnah, Chief [bt]Alvah, Chief Jetheth, 41 Chief [bu]Aholibamah, Chief Elah, Chief Pinon, 42 Chief Kenaz, Chief Teman, Chief Mibzar, 43 Chief Magdiel, and Chief Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom, according to their dwelling places in the land of their possession. Esau was the father of [bv]the Edomites.

Joseph Dreams of Greatness

37 Now Jacob dwelt in the land (HA)where his father was a [bw]stranger, in the land of Canaan. This is the history of Jacob.

Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. And the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives; and Joseph brought (HB)a bad report of them to his father.

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was (HC)the son of his old age. Also he (HD)made him a tunic of many colors. But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they (HE)hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.

Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they hated him even more. So he said to them, “Please hear this dream which I have dreamed: (HF)There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf.”

And his brothers said to him, “Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.

Then he dreamed still another dream and told it to his brothers, and said, “Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, (HG)the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me.”

10 So he told it to his father and his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall your mother and I and (HH)your brothers indeed come to bow down to the earth before you?” 11 And (HI)his brothers envied him, but his father (HJ)kept the matter in mind.

Joseph Sold by His Brothers

12 Then his brothers went to feed their father’s flock in (HK)Shechem. 13 And Israel said to Joseph, “Are not your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, I will send you to them.”

So he said to him, “Here I am.”

14 Then he said to him, “Please go and see if it is well with your brothers and well with the flocks, and bring back word to me.” So he sent him out of the Valley of (HL)Hebron, and he went to Shechem.

15 Now a certain man found him, and there he was, wandering in the field. And the man asked him, saying, “What are you seeking?”

16 So he said, “I am seeking my brothers. (HM)Please tell me where they are feeding their flocks.

17 And the man said, “They have departed from here, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’ ” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them in (HN)Dothan.

18 Now when they saw him afar off, even before he came near them, (HO)they conspired against him to kill him. 19 Then they said to one another, “Look, this [bx]dreamer is coming! 20 (HP)Come therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit; and we shall say, ‘Some wild beast has devoured him.’ We shall see what will become of his dreams!”

21 But (HQ)Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands, and said, “Let us not kill him.” 22 And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit which is in the wilderness, and do not lay a hand on him”—that he might deliver him out of their hands, and bring him back to his father.

23 So it came to pass, when Joseph had come to his brothers, that they (HR)stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him. 24 Then they took him and cast him into a pit. And the pit was empty; there was no water in it.

25 (HS)And they sat down to eat a meal. Then they lifted their eyes and looked, and there was a company of (HT)Ishmaelites, coming from Gilead with their camels, bearing spices, (HU)balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry them down to Egypt. 26 So Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is there if we kill our brother and (HV)conceal his blood? 27 Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and (HW)let not our hand be upon him, for he is (HX)our brother and (HY)our flesh.” And his brothers listened. 28 Then (HZ)Midianite traders passed by; so the brothers pulled Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, (IA)and sold him to the Ishmaelites for (IB)twenty shekels of silver. And they took Joseph to Egypt.

29 Then Reuben returned to the pit, and indeed Joseph was not in the pit; and he (IC)tore his clothes. 30 And he returned to his brothers and said, “The lad (ID)is no more; and I, where shall I go?”

31 So they took (IE)Joseph’s tunic, killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the tunic in the blood. 32 Then they sent the tunic of many colors, and they brought it to their father and said, “We have found this. Do you know whether it is your son’s tunic or not?”

33 And he recognized it and said, “It is my son’s tunic. A (IF)wild beast has devoured him. Without doubt Joseph is torn to pieces.” 34 Then Jacob (IG)tore his clothes, put sackcloth on his waist, and (IH)mourned for his son many days. 35 And all his sons and all his daughters (II)arose to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted, and he said, “For (IJ)I shall go down into the grave to my son in mourning.” Thus his father wept for him.

36 Now (IK)the [by]Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard.

Judah and Tamar

38 It came to pass at that time that Judah departed from his brothers, and (IL)visited a certain Adullamite whose name was Hirah. And Judah (IM)saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was (IN)Shua, and he married her and went in to her. So she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name (IO)Er. She conceived again and bore a son, and she called his name (IP)Onan. And she conceived yet again and bore a son, and called his name (IQ)Shelah. He was at Chezib when she bore him.

Then Judah (IR)took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was (IS)Tamar. But (IT)Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, (IU)and the Lord killed him. And Judah said to Onan, “Go in to (IV)your brother’s wife and marry her, and raise up an heir to your brother.” But Onan knew that the heir would not be (IW)his; and it came to pass, when he went in to his brother’s wife, that he emitted on the ground, lest he should give an heir to his brother. 10 And the thing which he did [bz]displeased the Lord; therefore He killed (IX)him also.

11 Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, (IY)“Remain a widow in your father’s house till my son Shelah is grown.” For he said, “Lest he also die like his brothers.” And Tamar went and dwelt (IZ)in her father’s house.

12 Now in the process of time the daughter of Shua, Judah’s wife, died; and Judah (JA)was comforted, and went up to his sheepshearers at Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. 13 And it was told Tamar, saying, “Look, your father-in-law is going up (JB)to Timnah to shear his sheep.” 14 So she took off her widow’s garments, covered herself with a veil and wrapped herself, and (JC)sat in an open place which was on the way to Timnah; for she saw (JD)that Shelah was grown, and she was not given to him as a wife. 15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a harlot, because she had covered her face. 16 Then he turned to her by the way, and said, “Please let me come in to you”; for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law.

So she said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?”

17 And he said, (JE)“I will send a young goat from the flock.”

So she said, (JF)“Will you give me a pledge till you send it?

18 Then he said, “What pledge shall I give you?”

So she said, (JG)“Your signet and cord, and your staff that is in your hand.” Then he gave them to her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him. 19 So she arose and went away, and (JH)laid aside her veil and put on the garments of her widowhood.

20 And Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand, but he did not find her. 21 Then he asked the men of that place, saying, “Where is the harlot who was [ca]openly by the roadside?”

And they said, “There was no harlot in this place.

22 So he returned to Judah and said, “I cannot find her. Also, the men of the place said there was no harlot in this place.

23 Then Judah said, “Let her take them for herself, lest we be shamed; for I sent this young goat and you have not found her.”

24 And it came to pass, about three months after, that Judah was told, saying, “Tamar your daughter-in-law has (JI)played the harlot; furthermore she is [cb]with child by harlotry.”

So Judah said, “Bring her out (JJ)and let her be burned!”

25 When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “By the man to whom these belong, I am with child.” And she said, (JK)“Please determine whose these are—the signet and cord, and staff.”

26 So Judah (JL)acknowledged them and said, (JM)“She has been more righteous than I, because (JN)I did not give her to Shelah my son.” And he (JO)never knew her again.

27 Now it came to pass, at the time for giving birth, that behold, twins were in her womb. 28 And so it was, when she was giving birth, that the one put out his hand; and the midwife took a scarlet thread and bound it on his hand, saying, “This one came out first.” 29 Then it happened, as he drew back his hand, that his brother came out unexpectedly; and she said, “How did you break through? This breach be upon you!” Therefore his name was called (JP)Perez.[cc] 30 Afterward his brother came out who had the scarlet thread on his hand. And his name was called (JQ)Zerah.

Joseph a Slave in Egypt

39 Now Joseph had been taken (JR)down to Egypt. And (JS)Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, (JT)bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there. (JU)The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. And his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord (JV)made all he did [cd]to prosper in his hand. So Joseph (JW)found favor in his sight, and served him. Then he made him (JX)overseer of his house, and all that he had he put [ce]under his authority. So it was, from the time that he had made him overseer of his house and all that he had, that (JY)the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had in the house and in the field. Thus he left all that he had in Joseph’s [cf]hand, and he did not know what he had except for the [cg]bread which he ate.

Now Joseph (JZ)was handsome in form and appearance.

And it came to pass after these things that his master’s wife [ch]cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, (KA)“Lie with me.”

But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand. There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. (KB)How then can I do this great wickedness, and (KC)sin against God?”

10 So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he (KD)did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her.

11 But it happened about this time, when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside, 12 that she (KE)caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside. 13 And so it was, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside, 14 that she called to the men of her house and spoke to them, saying, “See, he has brought in to us a (KF)Hebrew to [ci]mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice. 15 And it happened, when he heard that I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me, and fled and went outside.”

16 So she kept his garment with her until his master came home. 17 Then she (KG)spoke to him with words like these, saying, “The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came in to me to mock me; 18 so it happened, as I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me and fled outside.”

19 So it was, when his master heard the words which his wife spoke to him, saying, “Your servant did to me after this manner,” that his (KH)anger was aroused. 20 Then Joseph’s master took him and (KI)put him into the (KJ)prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were confined. And he was there in the prison. 21 But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He (KK)gave[cj] him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. 22 And the keeper of the prison (KL)committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing. 23 The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under [ck]Joseph’s authority, because (KM)the Lord was with him; and whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper.

The Prisoners’ Dreams

40 It came to pass after these things that the (KN)butler and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their lord, the king of Egypt. And Pharaoh was (KO)angry with his two officers, the chief butler and the chief baker. (KP)So he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison, the place where Joseph was confined. And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them; so they were in custody for a while.

Then the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison, (KQ)had a dream, both of them, each man’s dream in one night and each man’s dream with its own interpretation. And Joseph came in to them in the morning and looked at them, and saw that they were [cl]sad. So he asked Pharaoh’s officers who were with him in the custody of his lord’s house, saying, (KR)“Why do you look so sad today?”

And they said to him, (KS)“We each have had a dream, and there is no interpreter of it.”

So Joseph said to them, (KT)“Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me, please.”

Then the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, “Behold, in my dream a vine was before me, 10 and in the vine were three branches; it was as though it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and its clusters brought forth ripe grapes. 11 Then Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.”

12 And Joseph said to him, (KU)“This is the interpretation of it: The three branches (KV)are three days. 13 Now within three days Pharaoh will (KW)lift up your head and restore you to your [cm]place, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand according to the former manner, when you were his butler. 14 But (KX)remember me when it is well with you, and (KY)please show kindness to me; make mention of me to Pharaoh, and get me out of this house. 15 For indeed I was (KZ)stolen away from the land of the Hebrews; (LA)and also I have done nothing here that they should put me into the dungeon.”

16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, “I also was in my dream, and there were three [cn]white baskets on my head. 17 In the uppermost basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head.”

18 So Joseph answered and said, (LB)“This is the interpretation of it: The three baskets are three days. 19 (LC)Within three days Pharaoh will lift [co]off your head from you and (LD)hang you on a tree; and the birds will eat your flesh from you.”

20 Now it came to pass on the third day, which was Pharaoh’s (LE)birthday, that he (LF)made a feast for all his servants; and he (LG)lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants. 21 Then he (LH)restored the chief butler to his butlership again, and (LI)he placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand. 22 But he (LJ)hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them. 23 Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but (LK)forgot him.

Pharaoh’s Dreams

41 Then it came to pass, at the end of two full years, that (LL)Pharaoh had a dream; and behold, he stood by the river. Suddenly there came up out of the river seven cows, fine looking and fat; and they fed in the meadow. Then behold, seven other cows came up after them out of the river, ugly and gaunt, and stood by the other cows on the bank of the river. And the ugly and gaunt cows ate up the seven fine looking and fat cows. So Pharaoh awoke. He slept and dreamed a second time; and suddenly seven heads of grain came up on one stalk, plump and good. Then behold, seven thin heads, blighted by the (LM)east wind, sprang up after them. And the seven thin heads devoured the seven plump and full heads. So Pharaoh awoke, and indeed, it was a dream. Now it came to pass in the morning (LN)that his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called for all (LO)the magicians of Egypt and all its (LP)wise men. And Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them for Pharaoh.

Then the (LQ)chief butler spoke to Pharaoh, saying: “I remember my faults this day. 10 When Pharaoh was (LR)angry with his servants, (LS)and put me in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, both me and the chief baker, 11 (LT)we each had a dream in one night, he and I. Each of us dreamed according to the interpretation of his own dream. 12 Now there was a young (LU)Hebrew man with us there, a (LV)servant of the captain of the guard. And we told him, and he (LW)interpreted our dreams for us; to each man he interpreted according to his own dream. 13 And it came to pass, just (LX)as he interpreted for us, so it happened. He restored me to my office, and he hanged him.”

14 (LY)Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they (LZ)brought him quickly (MA)out of the dungeon; and he shaved, (MB)changed his clothing, and came to Pharaoh. 15 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. (MC)But I have heard it said of you that you can understand a dream, to interpret it.”

16 So Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, (MD)It is not in me; (ME)God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.”

17 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph: “Behold, (MF)in my dream I stood on the bank of the river. 18 Suddenly seven cows came up out of the river, fine looking and fat; and they fed in the meadow. 19 Then behold, seven other cows came up after them, poor and very ugly and gaunt, such ugliness as I have never seen in all the land of Egypt. 20 And the gaunt and ugly cows ate up the first seven, the fat cows. 21 When they had eaten them up, no one would have known that they had eaten them, for they were just as ugly as at the beginning. So I awoke. 22 Also I saw in my dream, and suddenly seven [cp]heads came up on one stalk, full and good. 23 Then behold, seven heads, withered, thin, and blighted by the east wind, sprang up after them. 24 And the thin heads devoured the seven good heads. So (MG)I told this to the magicians, but there was no one who could explain it to me.”

25 Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, “The dreams of Pharaoh are one; (MH)God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do: 26 The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good [cq]heads are seven years; the dreams are one. 27 And the seven thin and ugly cows which came up after them are seven years, and the seven empty heads blighted by the east wind are (MI)seven years of famine. 28 (MJ)This is the thing which I have spoken to Pharaoh. God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do. 29 Indeed (MK)seven years of great plenty will come throughout all the land of Egypt; 30 but after them seven years of famine will (ML)arise, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine (MM)will deplete the land. 31 So the plenty will not be known in the land because of the famine following, for it will be very severe. 32 And the dream was repeated to Pharaoh twice because the (MN)thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.

33 “Now therefore, let Pharaoh select a discerning and wise man, and set him over the land of Egypt. 34 Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint [cr]officers over the land, (MO)to collect one-fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt in the seven plentiful years. 35 And (MP)let them gather all the food of those good years that are coming, and store up grain under the [cs]authority of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities. 36 Then that food shall be as a [ct]reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which shall be in the land of Egypt, that the land (MQ)may not [cu]perish during the famine.”

Joseph’s Rise to Power

37 So (MR)the advice was good in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of all his servants. 38 And Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find such a one as this, a man (MS)in whom is the Spirit of God?”

39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Inasmuch as God has shown you all this, there is no one as discerning and wise as you. 40 (MT)You shall be [cv]over my house, and all my people shall be ruled according to your word; only in regard to the throne will I be greater than you.” 41 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have (MU)set you over all the land of Egypt.”

42 Then Pharaoh (MV)took his signet ring off his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand; and he (MW)clothed him in garments of fine linen (MX)and put a gold chain around his neck. 43 And he had him ride in the second (MY)chariot which he had; (MZ)and they cried out before him, “Bow the knee!” So he set him (NA)over all the land of Egypt. 44 Pharaoh also said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh, and without your consent no man may lift his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.” 45 And Pharaoh called Joseph’s name [cw]Zaphnath-Paaneah. And he gave him as a wife (NB)Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On. So Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt.

46 Joseph was thirty years old when he (NC)stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt. 47 Now in the seven plentiful years the ground brought forth [cx]abundantly. 48 So he gathered up all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities; he laid up in every city the food of the fields which surrounded them. 49 Joseph gathered very much grain, (ND)as the sand of the sea, until he stopped counting, for it was immeasurable.

50 (NE)And to Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came, whom Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On, bore to him. 51 Joseph called the name of the firstborn [cy]Manasseh: “For God has made me forget all my toil and all my (NF)father’s house.” 52 And the name of the second he called [cz]Ephraim: “For God has caused me to be (NG)fruitful in the land of my affliction.”

53 Then the seven years of plenty which were in the land of Egypt ended, 54 (NH)and the seven years of famine began to come, (NI)as Joseph had said. The famine was in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. 55 So when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. Then Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph; (NJ)whatever he says to you, do.” 56 The famine was over all the face of the earth, and Joseph opened [da]all the storehouses and (NK)sold to the Egyptians. And the famine became severe in the land of Egypt. 57 (NL)So all countries came to Joseph in Egypt to (NM)buy grain, because the famine was severe in all lands.

Joseph’s Brothers Go to Egypt

42 When (NN)Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, “Why do you look at one another?” And he said, “Indeed I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down to that place and buy for us there, that we may (NO)live and not die.”

So Joseph’s ten brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt. But Jacob did not send Joseph’s brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, (NP)“Lest some calamity befall him.” And the sons of Israel went to buy grain among those who journeyed, for the famine was (NQ)in the land of Canaan.

Now Joseph was governor (NR)over the land; and it was he who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and (NS)bowed down before him with their faces to the earth. Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he acted as (NT)a stranger to them and spoke [db]roughly to them. Then he said to them, “Where do you come from?”

And they said, “From the land of Canaan to buy food.”

So Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him. Then Joseph (NU)remembered the dreams which he had dreamed about them, and said to them, “You are spies! You have come to see the [dc]nakedness of the land!”

10 And they said to him, “No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food. 11 We are all one man’s sons; we are honest men; your servants are not spies.”

12 But he said to them, “No, but you have come to see the nakedness of the land.”

13 And they said, “Your servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and in fact, the youngest is with our father today, and one (NV)is no more.”

14 But Joseph said to them, “It is as I spoke to you, saying, ‘You are spies!’ 15 In this manner you shall be tested: (NW)By the life of Pharaoh, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here. 16 Send one of you, and let him bring your brother; and you shall be [dd]kept in prison, that your words may be tested to see whether there is any truth in you; or else, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies!” 17 So he [de]put them all together in prison (NX)three days.

18 Then Joseph said to them the third day, “Do this and live, (NY)for I fear God: 19 If you are honest men, let one of your brothers be confined to your prison house; but you, go and carry grain for the famine of your houses. 20 And (NZ)bring your youngest brother to me; so your words will be verified, and you shall not die.”

And they did so. 21 Then they said to one another, (OA)“We are truly guilty concerning our brother, for we saw the anguish of his soul when he pleaded with us, and we would not hear; (OB)therefore this distress has come upon us.”

22 And Reuben answered them, saying, (OC)“Did I not speak to you, saying, ‘Do not sin against the boy’; and you would not listen? Therefore behold, his blood is now (OD)required of us.” 23 But they did not know that Joseph understood them, for he spoke to them through an interpreter. 24 And he turned himself away from them and (OE)wept. Then he returned to them again, and talked with them. And he took (OF)Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.

The Brothers Return to Canaan

25 Then Joseph (OG)gave a command to fill their sacks with grain, to (OH)restore every man’s money to his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. (OI)Thus he did for them. 26 So they loaded their donkeys with the grain and departed from there. 27 But as (OJ)one of them opened his sack to give his donkey feed at the encampment, he saw his money; and there it was, in the mouth of his sack. 28 So he said to his brothers, “My money has been restored, and there it is, in my sack!” Then their hearts [df]failed them and they were afraid, saying to one another, “What is this that God has done to us?”

29 Then they went to Jacob their father in the land of Canaan and told him all that had happened to them, saying: 30 “The man who is lord of the land (OK)spoke [dg]roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country. 31 But we said to him, ‘We are honest men; we are not spies. 32 We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no more, and the youngest is with our father this day in the land of Canaan.’ 33 Then the man, the lord of the country, said to us, (OL)‘By this I will know that you are honest men: Leave one of your brothers here with me, take food for the famine of your households, and be gone. 34 And bring your (OM)youngest brother to me; so I shall know that you are not spies, but that you are honest men. I will grant your brother to you, and you may (ON)trade in the land.’ ”

35 Then it happened as they emptied their sacks, that surprisingly (OO)each man’s bundle of money was in his sack; and when they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid. 36 And Jacob their father said to them, “You have (OP)bereaved me: Joseph is no more, Simeon is no more, and you want to take (OQ)Benjamin. All these things are against me.”

37 Then Reuben spoke to his father, saying, “Kill my two sons if I do not bring him back to you; put him in my hands, and I will bring him back to you.”

38 But he said, “My son shall not go down with you, for (OR)his brother is dead, and he is left alone. (OS)If any calamity should befall him along the way in which you go, then you would (OT)bring down my gray hair with sorrow to the grave.”

Joseph’s Brothers Return with Benjamin

43 Now the famine was (OU)severe in the land. And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the grain which they had brought from Egypt, that their father said to them, “Go (OV)back, buy us a little food.”

But Judah spoke to him, saying, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face unless your (OW)brother is with you.’ If you send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food. But if you will not send him, we will not go down; for the man said to us, ‘You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.’ ”

And Israel said, “Why did you deal so [dh]wrongfully with me as to tell the man whether you had still another brother?”

But they said, “The man asked us pointedly about ourselves and our family, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?’ And we told him according to these words. Could we possibly have known that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down’?”

Then Judah said to Israel his father, “Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go, that we may (OX)live and not die, both we and you and also our little ones. I myself will be surety for him; from my hand you shall require him. (OY)If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever. 10 For if we had not lingered, surely by now we would have returned this second time.”

11 And their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: Take some of the best fruits of the land in your vessels and (OZ)carry down a present for the man—a little (PA)balm and a little honey, spices and myrrh, pistachio nuts and almonds. 12 Take double money in your hand, and take back in your hand the money (PB)that was returned in the mouth of your sacks; perhaps it was an oversight. 13 Take your brother also, and arise, go back to the man. 14 And may God (PC)Almighty (PD)give you mercy before the man, that he may release your other brother and Benjamin. (PE)If I am bereaved, I am bereaved!”

15 So the men took that present and Benjamin, and they took double money in their hand, and arose and went (PF)down to Egypt; and they stood before Joseph. 16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the (PG)steward of his house, “Take these men to my home, and slaughter [di]an animal and make ready; for these men will dine with me at noon.” 17 Then the man did as Joseph ordered, and the man brought the men into Joseph’s house.

18 Now the men were (PH)afraid because they were brought into Joseph’s house; and they said, “It is because of the money, which was returned in our sacks the first time, that we are brought in, so that he may [dj]make a case against us and seize us, to take us as slaves with our donkeys.”

19 When they drew near to the steward of Joseph’s house, they talked with him at the door of the house, 20 and said, “O sir, (PI)we indeed came down the first time to buy food; 21 but (PJ)it happened, when we came to the encampment, that we opened our sacks, and there, each man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight; so we have brought it back in our hand. 22 And we have brought down other money in our hands to buy food. We do not know who put our money in our sacks.”

23 But he said, “Peace be with you, do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has given you treasure in your sacks; I had your money.” Then he brought (PK)Simeon out to them.

24 So the man brought the men into Joseph’s house and (PL)gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their donkeys feed. 25 Then they made the present ready for Joseph’s coming at noon, for they heard that they would eat bread there.

26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and (PM)bowed down before him to the earth. 27 Then he asked them about their well-being, and said, “Is your father well, the old man (PN)of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?”

28 And they answered, “Your servant our father is in good health; he is still alive.” (PO)And they bowed their heads down and prostrated themselves.

29 Then he lifted his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, (PP)his mother’s son, and said, “Is this your younger brother (PQ)of whom you spoke to me?” And he said, “God be gracious to you, my son.” 30 Now (PR)his heart yearned for his brother; so Joseph made haste and sought somewhere to weep. And he went into his chamber and (PS)wept there. 31 Then he washed his face and came out; and he restrained himself, and said, “Serve the (PT)bread.”

32 So they set him a place by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves; because the Egyptians could not eat food with the (PU)Hebrews, for that is (PV)an abomination to the Egyptians. 33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his (PW)birthright and the youngest according to his youth; and the men looked in astonishment at one another. 34 Then he took servings to them from before him, but Benjamin’s serving was (PX)five times as much as any of theirs. So they drank and were merry with him.

Joseph’s Cup

44 And he commanded [dk]the (PY)steward of his house, saying, (PZ)“Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man’s money in the mouth of his sack. Also put my cup, the silver cup, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest, and his grain money.” So he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken. As soon as the morning dawned, the men were sent away, they and their donkeys. When they had gone out of the city, and were not yet far off, Joseph said to his steward, “Get up, follow the men; and when you overtake them, say to them, ‘Why have you (QA)repaid evil for good? Is not this the one from which my lord drinks, and with which he indeed practices divination? You have done evil in so doing.’ ”

So he overtook them, and he spoke to them these same words. And they said to him, “Why does my lord say these words? Far be it from us that your servants should do such a thing. Look, we brought back to you from the land of Canaan (QB)the money which we found in the mouth of our sacks. How then could we steal silver or gold from your lord’s house? With whomever of your servants it is found, (QC)let him die, and we also will be my lord’s slaves.”

10 And he said, “Now also let it be according to your words; he with whom it is found shall be my slave, and you shall be blameless.” 11 Then each man speedily let down his sack to the ground, and each opened his sack. 12 So he searched. He began with the oldest and [dl]left off with the youngest; and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack. 13 Then they (QD)tore their clothes, and each man loaded his donkey and returned to the city.

14 So Judah and his brothers came to Joseph’s house, and he was still there; and they (QE)fell before him on the ground. 15 And Joseph said to them, “What deed is this you have done? Did you not know that such a man as I can certainly practice divination?”

16 Then Judah said, “What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how shall we clear ourselves? God has (QF)found out the iniquity of your servants; here (QG)we are, my lord’s slaves, both we and he also with whom the cup was found.”

17 But he said, (QH)“Far be it from me that I should do so; the man in whose hand the cup was found, he shall be my slave. And as for you, go up in peace to your father.”

Judah Intercedes for Benjamin

18 Then Judah came near to him and said: “O my lord, please let your servant speak a word in my lord’s hearing, and (QI)do not let your anger burn against your servant; for you are even like Pharaoh. 19 My lord asked his servants, saying, ‘Have you a father or a brother?’ 20 And we said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, and (QJ)a child of his old age, who is young; his brother is (QK)dead, and he (QL)alone is left of his mother’s children, and his (QM)father loves him.’ 21 Then you said to your servants, (QN)‘Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him.’ 22 And we said to my lord, ‘The lad cannot leave his father, for if he should leave his father, his father would die.’ 23 But you said to your servants, (QO)‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall see my face no more.’

24 “So it was, when we went up to your servant my father, that we told him the words of my lord. 25 And (QP)our father said, ‘Go back and buy us a little food.’ 26 But we said, ‘We cannot go down; if our youngest brother is with us, then we will go down; for we may not see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’ 27 Then your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that (QQ)my wife bore me two sons; 28 and the one went out from me, and I said, (QR)“Surely he is torn to pieces”; and I have not seen him since. 29 But if you (QS)take this one also from me, and calamity befalls him, you shall bring down my gray hair with sorrow to the grave.’

30 “Now therefore, when I come to your servant my father, and the lad is not with us, since (QT)his life is bound up in the lad’s life, 31 it will happen, when he sees that the lad is not with us, that he will die. So your servants will bring down the gray hair of your servant our father with sorrow to the grave. 32 For your servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, (QU)‘If I do not bring him back to you, then I shall bear the blame before my father forever.’ 33 Now therefore, please (QV)let your servant remain instead of the lad as a slave to my lord, and let the lad go up with his brothers. 34 For how shall I go up to my father if the lad is not with me, lest perhaps I see the evil that would [dm]come upon my father?”

Joseph Revealed to His Brothers

45 Then Joseph could not restrain himself before all those who stood by him, and he cried out, “Make everyone go out from me!” So no one stood with him (QW)while Joseph made himself known to his brothers. And he (QX)wept aloud, and the Egyptians and the house of Pharaoh heard it.

Then Joseph said to his brothers, (QY)“I am Joseph; does my father still live?” But his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed in his presence. And Joseph said to his brothers, “Please come near to me.” So they came near. Then he said: “I am Joseph your brother, (QZ)whom you sold into Egypt. But now, do not therefore be grieved or angry with yourselves because you sold me here; (RA)for God sent me before you to preserve life. For these two years the (RB)famine has been in the land, and there are still five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvesting. And God (RC)sent me before you to preserve a [dn]posterity for you in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. So now it was not you who sent me here, but (RD)God; and He has made me (RE)a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a (RF)ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.

“Hurry and go up to my father, and say to him, ‘Thus says your son Joseph: “God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, do not [do]tarry. 10 (RG)You shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near to me, you and your children, your children’s children, your flocks and your herds, and all that you have. 11 There I will (RH)provide for you, lest you and your household, and all that you have, come to poverty; for there are still five years of famine.” ’

12 “And behold, your eyes and the eyes of my brother Benjamin see that it is (RI)my mouth that speaks to you. 13 So you shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that you have seen; and you shall hurry and (RJ)bring my father down here.”

14 Then he fell on his brother Benjamin’s neck and wept, and Benjamin wept on his neck. 15 Moreover he (RK)kissed all his brothers and wept over them, and after that his brothers talked with him.

16 Now the report of it was heard in Pharaoh’s house, saying, “Joseph’s brothers have come.” So it pleased Pharaoh and his servants well. 17 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Say to your brothers, ‘Do this: Load your animals and depart; go to the land of Canaan. 18 Bring your father and your households and come to me; I will give you the best of the land of Egypt, and you will eat (RL)the [dp]fat of the land. 19 Now you are commanded—do this: Take carts out of the land of Egypt for your little ones and your wives; bring your father and come. 20 Also do not be concerned about your goods, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours.’ ”

21 Then the sons of Israel did so; and Joseph gave them (RM)carts,[dq] according to the command of Pharaoh, and he gave them provisions for the journey. 22 He gave to all of them, to each man, (RN)changes of garments; but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver and (RO)five changes of garments. 23 And he sent to his father these things: ten donkeys loaded with the good things of Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain, bread, and food for his father for the journey. 24 So he sent his brothers away, and they departed; and he said to them, “See that you do not become troubled along the way.”

25 Then they went up out of Egypt, and came to the land of Canaan to Jacob their father. 26 And they told him, saying, “Joseph is still alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt.” (RP)And Jacob’s heart stood still, because he did not believe them. 27 But when they told him all the words which Joseph had said to them, and when he saw the carts which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit (RQ)of Jacob their father revived. 28 Then Israel said, “It is enough. Joseph my son is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.”

Jacob’s Journey to Egypt(RR)

46 So Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to (RS)Beersheba, and offered sacrifices (RT)to the God of his father Isaac. Then God spoke to Israel (RU)in the visions of the night, and said, “Jacob, Jacob!”

And he said, “Here I am.”

So He said, “I am God, (RV)the God of your father; do not fear to go down to Egypt, for I will (RW)make of you a great nation there. (RX)I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also surely (RY)bring you up again; and (RZ)Joseph [dr]will put his hand on your eyes.”

Then (SA)Jacob arose from Beersheba; and the sons of Israel carried their father Jacob, their little ones, and their wives, in the [ds]carts (SB)which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. So they took their livestock and their goods, which they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and went to Egypt, (SC)Jacob and all his descendants with him. His sons and his sons’ sons, his daughters and his sons’ daughters, and all his descendants he brought with him to Egypt.

Now (SD)these were the names of the children of Israel, Jacob and his sons, who went to Egypt: (SE)Reuben was Jacob’s firstborn. The (SF)sons of Reuben were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. 10 (SG)The sons of Simeon were [dt]Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, [du]Jachin, [dv]Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman. 11 The sons of (SH)Levi were Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 12 The sons of (SI)Judah were (SJ)Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan). (SK)The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. 13 The sons of Issachar were Tola, [dw]Puvah, [dx]Job, and Shimron. 14 The (SL)sons of Zebulun were Sered, Elon, and Jahleel. 15 These were the (SM)sons of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob in Padan Aram, with his daughter Dinah. All the persons, his sons and his daughters, were thirty-three.

16 The sons of Gad were [dy]Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, [dz]Ezbon, Eri, [ea]Arodi, and Areli. 17 (SN)The sons of Asher were Jimnah, Ishuah, Isui, Beriah, and Serah, their sister. And the sons of Beriah were Heber and Malchiel. 18 (SO)These were the sons of Zilpah, (SP)whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter; and these she bore to Jacob: sixteen persons.

19 The (SQ)sons of Rachel, (SR)Jacob’s wife, were Joseph and Benjamin. 20 (SS)And to Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On, bore to him. 21 (ST)The sons of Benjamin were Belah, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, (SU)Ehi, Rosh, (SV)Muppim, [eb]Huppim, and Ard. 22 These were the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob: fourteen persons in all.

23 The son of Dan was [ec]Hushim. 24 (SW)The sons of Naphtali were [ed]Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and [ee]Shillem. 25 (SX)These were the sons of Bilhah, (SY)whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, and she bore these to Jacob: seven persons in all.

26 (SZ)All the persons who went with Jacob to Egypt, who came from his body, (TA)besides Jacob’s sons’ wives, were sixty-six persons in all. 27 And the sons of Joseph who were born to him in Egypt were two persons. (TB)All the persons of the house of Jacob who went to Egypt were seventy.

Jacob Settles in Goshen

28 Then he sent Judah before him to Joseph, (TC)to point out before him the way to Goshen. And they came (TD)to the land of Goshen. 29 So Joseph made ready his (TE)chariot and went up to Goshen to meet his father Israel; and he presented himself to him, and (TF)fell on his neck and wept on his neck a good while.

30 And Israel said to Joseph, (TG)“Now let me die, since I have seen your face, because you are still alive.”

31 Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, (TH)“I will go up and tell Pharaoh, and say to him, ‘My brothers and those of my father’s house, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me. 32 And the men are (TI)shepherds, for their occupation has been to feed livestock; and they have brought their flocks, their herds, and all that they have.’ 33 So it shall be, when Pharaoh calls you and says, (TJ)‘What is your occupation?’ 34 that you shall say, ‘Your servants’ (TK)occupation has been with livestock (TL)from our youth even till now, both we and also our fathers,’ that you may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is (TM)an[ef] abomination to the Egyptians.”

Joseph Is Governor of Egypt

47 Then Joseph (TN)went and told Pharaoh, and said, “My father and my brothers, their flocks and their herds and all that they possess, have come from the land of Canaan; and indeed they are in (TO)the land of Goshen.” And he took five men from among his brothers and (TP)presented them to Pharaoh. Then Pharaoh said to his brothers, (TQ)“What is your occupation?”

And they said to Pharaoh, (TR)“Your servants are shepherds, both we and also our fathers.” And they said to Pharaoh, (TS)“We have come to dwell in the land, because your servants have no pasture for their flocks, (TT)for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now therefore, please let your servants (TU)dwell in the land of Goshen.”

Then Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, saying, “Your father and your brothers have come to you. (TV)The land of Egypt is before you. Have your father and brothers dwell in the best of the land; let them dwell (TW)in the land of Goshen. And if you know any competent men among them, then make them chief herdsmen over my livestock.”

Then Joseph brought in his father Jacob and set him before Pharaoh; and Jacob (TX)blessed Pharaoh. Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How old are you?”

And Jacob said to Pharaoh, (TY)“The days of the years of my [eg]pilgrimage are (TZ)one hundred and thirty years; (UA)few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and (UB)they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.” 10 So Jacob (UC)blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh.

11 And Joseph situated his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of (UD)Rameses, (UE)as Pharaoh had commanded. 12 Then Joseph provided (UF)his father, his brothers, and all his father’s household with bread, according to the number in their families.

Joseph Deals with the Famine

13 Now there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very severe, (UG)so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine. 14 (UH)And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, for the grain which they bought; and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house.

15 So when the money failed in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, “Give us bread, for (UI)why should we die in your presence? For the money has failed.”

16 Then Joseph said, “Give your livestock, and I will give you bread for your livestock, if the money is gone.” 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for the horses, the flocks, the cattle of the herds, and for the donkeys. Thus he [eh]fed them with bread in exchange for all their livestock that year.

18 When that year had ended, they came to him the next year and said to him, “We will not hide from my lord that our money is gone; my lord also has our herds of livestock. There is nothing left in the sight of my lord but our bodies and our lands. 19 Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants of Pharaoh; give us seed, that we may (UJ)live and not die, that the land may not be desolate.”

20 Then Joseph (UK)bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for every man of the Egyptians sold his field, because the famine was severe upon them. So the land became Pharaoh’s. 21 And as for the people, he [ei]moved them into the cities, from one end of the borders of Egypt to the other end. 22 (UL)Only the land of the (UM)priests he did not buy; for the priests had rations allotted to them by Pharaoh, and they ate their rations which Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their lands.

23 Then Joseph said to the people, “Indeed I have bought you and your land this day for Pharaoh. Look, here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land. 24 And it shall come to pass in the harvest that you shall give one-fifth to Pharaoh. Four-fifths shall be your own, as seed for the field and for your food, for those of your households and as food for your little ones.”

25 So they said, “You have saved (UN)our lives; let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.” 26 And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt to this day, that Pharaoh should have one-fifth, (UO)except for the land of the priests only, which did not become Pharaoh’s.

Joseph’s Vow to Jacob

27 So Israel (UP)dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had possessions there and (UQ)grew and multiplied exceedingly. 28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years. So the length of Jacob’s life was one hundred and forty-seven years. 29 When the time (UR)drew near that Israel must die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “Now if I have found favor in your sight, please (US)put your hand under my thigh, and (UT)deal kindly and truly with me. (UU)Please do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but (UV)let me lie with my fathers; you shall carry me out of Egypt and (UW)bury me in their burial place.”

And he said, “I will do as you have said.”

31 Then he said, “Swear to me.” And he swore to him. So (UX)Israel bowed himself on the head of the bed.

Jacob Blesses Joseph’s Sons(UY)

48 Now it came to pass after these things that Joseph was told, “Indeed your father is sick”; and he took with him his two sons, (UZ)Manasseh and Ephraim. And Jacob was told, “Look, your son Joseph is coming to you”; and Israel [ej]strengthened himself and sat up on the bed. Then Jacob said to Joseph: “God (VA)Almighty appeared to me at (VB)Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, and said to me, ‘Behold, I will (VC)make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a multitude of people, and (VD)give this land to your descendants after you (VE)as an everlasting possession.’ And now your (VF)two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine. Your [ek]offspring [el]whom you beget after them shall be yours; they will be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance. But as for me, when I came from Padan, (VG)Rachel died beside me in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).”

Then Israel saw Joseph’s sons, and said, “Who are these?”

Joseph said to his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me in this place.

And he said, “Please bring them to me, and (VH)I will bless them.” 10 Now (VI)the eyes of Israel were dim with age, so that he could not see. Then Joseph brought them near him, and he (VJ)kissed them and embraced them. 11 And Israel said to Joseph, (VK)“I had not thought to see your face; but in fact, God has also shown me your offspring!”

12 So Joseph brought them from beside his knees, and he bowed down with his face to the earth. 13 And Joseph took them both, Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near him. 14 Then Israel stretched out his right hand and (VL)laid it on Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, (VM)guiding his hands knowingly, for Manasseh was the (VN)firstborn. 15 And (VO)he blessed Joseph, and said:

“God, (VP)before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
The God who has fed me all my life long to this day,
16 The Angel (VQ)who has redeemed me from all evil,
Bless the lads;
Let (VR)my name be named upon them,
And the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac;
And let them (VS)grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.”

17 Now when Joseph saw that his father (VT)laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him; so he took hold of his father’s hand to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. 18 And Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.”

19 But his father refused and said, (VU)“I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly (VV)his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations.”

20 So he blessed them that day, saying, (VW)“By you Israel will bless, saying, ‘May God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh!’ ” And thus he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

21 Then Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I am dying, but (VX)God will be with you and bring you back to the land of your fathers. 22 Moreover (VY)I have given to you one [em]portion above your brothers, which I took from the hand (VZ)of the Amorite with my sword and my bow.”

Jacob’s Last Words to His Sons

49 And Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather together, that I may (WA)tell you what shall befall you (WB)in the last days:

“Gather together and hear, you sons of Jacob,
And listen to Israel your father.

“Reuben, you are (WC)my firstborn,
My might and the beginning of my strength,
The excellency of dignity and the excellency of power.
Unstable as water, you shall not excel,
Because you (WD)went up to your father’s bed;
Then you defiled it
He went up to my couch.

“Simeon and Levi are brothers;
Instruments of [en]cruelty are in their dwelling place.
(WE)Let not my soul enter their council;
Let not my honor be united (WF)to their assembly;
(WG)For in their anger they slew a man,
And in their self-will they [eo]hamstrung an ox.
Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce;
And their wrath, for it is cruel!
(WH)I will divide them in Jacob
And scatter them in Israel.

“Judah,(WI) you are he whom your brothers shall praise;
(WJ)Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
(WK)Your father’s children shall bow down before you.
Judah is (WL)a lion’s whelp;
From the prey, my son, you have gone up.
(WM)He [ep]bows down, he lies down as a lion;
And as a lion, who shall rouse him?
10 (WN)The [eq]scepter shall not depart from Judah,
Nor (WO)a lawgiver from between his feet,
(WP)Until Shiloh comes;
(WQ)And to Him shall be the obedience of the people.
11 Binding his donkey to the vine,
And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine,
He washed his garments in wine,
And his clothes in the blood of grapes.
12 His eyes are darker than wine,
And his teeth whiter than milk.

13 “Zebulun(WR) shall dwell by the haven of the sea;
He shall become a haven for ships,
And his border shall (WS)adjoin Sidon.

14 “Issachar(WT) is a strong donkey,
Lying down between two burdens;
15 He saw that rest was good,
And that the land was pleasant;
He bowed (WU)his shoulder to bear a burden,
And became a band of slaves.

16 “Dan(WV) shall judge his people
As one of the tribes of Israel.
17 (WW)Dan shall be a serpent by the way,
A viper by the path,
That bites the horse’s heels
So that its rider shall fall backward.
18 (WX)I have waited for your salvation, O Lord!

19 “Gad,(WY)[er] a troop shall [es]tramp upon him,
But he shall triumph at last.

20 “Bread from (WZ)Asher shall be rich,
And he shall yield royal dainties.

21 “Naphtali(XA) is a deer let loose;
He uses beautiful words.

22 “Joseph is a fruitful bough,
A fruitful bough by a well;
His branches run over the wall.
23 The archers have (XB)bitterly grieved him,
Shot at him and hated him.
24 But his (XC)bow remained in strength,
And the arms of his hands were [et]made strong
By the hands of (XD)the Mighty God of Jacob
(XE)(From there (XF)is the Shepherd, (XG)the Stone of Israel),
25 (XH)By the God of your father who will help you,
(XI)And by the Almighty (XJ)who will bless you
With blessings of heaven above,
Blessings of the deep that lies beneath,
Blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
26 The blessings of your father
Have excelled the blessings of my ancestors,
(XK)Up to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills.
(XL)They shall be on the head of Joseph,
And on the crown of the head of him who was separate from his brothers.

27 “Benjamin is a (XM)ravenous wolf;
In the morning he shall devour the prey,
(XN)And at night he shall divide the spoil.”

28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father spoke to them. And he blessed them; he blessed each one according to his own blessing.

Jacob’s Death and Burial

29 Then he charged them and said to them: “I (XO)am to be gathered to my people; (XP)bury me with my fathers (XQ)in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre in the land of Canaan, (XR)which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite as a possession for a burial place. 31 (XS)There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife, (XT)there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and there I buried Leah. 32 The field and the cave that is there were purchased from the sons of Heth.” 33 And when Jacob had finished commanding his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed and breathed his last, and was gathered to his people.

Burial of Jacob

50 Then Joseph (XU)fell on his father’s face and (XV)wept over him, and kissed him. And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to (XW)embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel. Forty days were required for him, for such are the days required for those who are embalmed; and the Egyptians (XX)mourned[eu] for him seventy days.

Now when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spoke to (XY)the household of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the hearing of Pharaoh, saying, (XZ)‘My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am dying; in my grave (YA)which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.” Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will come back.’ ”

And Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear.”

So Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, as well as all the house of Joseph, his brothers, and his father’s house. Only their little ones, their flocks, and their herds they left in the land of Goshen. And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen, and it was a very great gathering.

10 Then they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and they (YB)mourned there with a great and very solemn lamentation. (YC)He observed seven days of mourning for his father. 11 And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a deep mourning of the Egyptians.” Therefore its name was called [ev]Abel Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.

12 So his sons did for him just as he had commanded them. 13 For (YD)his sons carried him to the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, before Mamre, which Abraham (YE)bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite as property for a burial place. 14 And after he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers and all who went up with him to bury his father.

Joseph Reassures His Brothers

15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, (YF)they said, “Perhaps Joseph will hate us, and may [ew]actually repay us for all the evil which we did to him.” 16 So they sent messengers to Joseph, saying, “Before your father died he commanded, saying, 17 ‘Thus you shall say to Joseph: “I beg you, please forgive the trespass of your brothers and their sin; (YG)for they did evil to you.” ’ Now, please, forgive the trespass of the servants of (YH)the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

18 Then his brothers also went and (YI)fell down before his face, and they said, “Behold, we are your servants.”

19 Joseph said to them, (YJ)“Do not be afraid, (YK)for am I in the place of God? 20 (YL)But as for you, you meant evil against me; but (YM)God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive. 21 Now therefore, do not be afraid; (YN)I will provide for you and your little ones.” And he comforted them and spoke [ex]kindly to them.

Death of Joseph(YO)

22 So Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he and his father’s household. And Joseph lived one hundred and ten years. 23 Joseph saw Ephraim’s children (YP)to the third generation. (YQ)The children of Machir, the son of Manasseh, (YR)were also brought up on Joseph’s knees.

24 And Joseph said to his brethren, “I am dying; but (YS)God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land to the land (YT)of which He swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.” 25 Then (YU)Joseph took an oath from the children of Israel, saying, “God will surely [ey]visit you, and (YV)you shall carry up my (YW)bones from here.” 26 So Joseph died, being one hundred and ten years old; and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
